Riddle me this:

Hi, welcome to /r/riddles! Post riddles and try to solve them in the comments.

To spoiler tag: >!spoiler!< will appear as spoiler. Click/tap to view it.

Rules

Please read the full rules here.

  1. No Spam: This subreddit is not the place to promote your website or YouTube videos. Read Reddit's general definition of spam and the wiki page about self-promotion No NFTs!

  2. Riddles must be self-contained in words. No outside links, no images.

  3. All guesses and discussions of guesses must be spoiler-tagged. A spoiler tag begins with >! [no space after] and ends with !< [no space before]. If your spoiler starts or ends with a space, it won't work on all platforms, so try to be careful about that. See Automod's comment in (nearly) every post for more instructions. You can ask the mods if you need more help.

  4. Posts should be riddles. Riddles involve creative thinking.
Creative thinking is a change in perspective or trick of wordplay that needs to be grasped to solve the riddle. Your post may be removed if it does not rely on creative thinking. For example, the riddle "What gets wetter as it dries?" is solved by identifying a change in perspective. Once we re-interpret "dries", we realize the solution is "a towel".
IF LOGIC, MATH, OR OTHER ANALYTICAL THINKING IS INVOLVED, IT IS NOT A RIDDLE. See /r/puzzles or /r/trivia for other types of brain exercises.

  5. No riddles from active competitions.
Unless the host of the competition tells us it's okay, please don't post riddles from competitions until after the competition has ended.

  6. No hate: No harassment, no racism, no bigotry of any kind. No politics.

  7. No trolling. No shitposting.

Guidelines/Suggestions

  1. Please don't Google the answers. If you cheat, please don't post an answer

  2. Please use a descriptive title. A good strategy is to use the first line of the riddle as the title.

  3. If your post doesn't show up in /r/riddles/new, it was probably flagged as spam. Send us a message and we'll double check it.

2 Announcements: New Discord Server, ModCoord Update

New Discord Server from /r/riddles - The Puzzle Network. Discuss Riddles, Puzzles, etc.

My fellow Riddlers, we landed gentry are excited to announce a new Discord server for riddles, puzzles, and more! As long as you feel you can participate in a friendly manner, you're welcome to join. Get Started Here.

From /r/ModCoord:

We stand with the disabled users of reddit and in our community. Starting July 1, Reddit's API policy blind/visually impaired communities will be more dependent on sighted people for moderation. When Reddit says they are whitelisting accessibility apps for the disabled, they are not telling the full story.

TL;DR

  • Starting July 1, Reddit's API policy will force blind/visually impaired communities to further depend on sighted people for moderation

  • When reddit says they are whitelisting accessibility apps, they are not telling the full story, because Apollo, RIF, Boost, Sync, etc. are the apps r/Blind users have overwhelmingly listed as their apps of choice with better accessibility, and Reddit is not whitelisting them. Reddit has done a good job hiding this fact, by inventing the expression "accessibility apps."

  • Forcing disabled people, especially profoundly disabled people, to stop using the app they depend on and have become accustomed to is cruel; for the most profoundly disabled people, June 30 may be the last day they will be able to access reddit communities that are important to them.

If you've been living under a rock for the past few weeks:

Reddit abruptly announced that they would be charging astronomically overpriced API fees to 3rd party apps, cutting off mod tools for NSFW subreddits (not just porn subreddits, but subreddits that deal with frank discussions about NSFW topics).

And worse, blind redditors & blind mods [including mods of r/Blind and similar communities] will no longer have access to resources that are desperately needed in the disabled community.

Why does our community care about blind users?

As a mod from r/foodforthought testifies:

I was raised by a 30-year special educator, I have a deaf mother-in-law, sister with MS, and a brother who was born disabled. None vision-impaired, but a range of other disabilities which makes it clear that corporations are all too happy to cut deals (and corners) with the cheapest/most profitable option, slap a "handicap accessible" label on it, and ignore the fact that their so-called "accessible" solution puts the onus on disabled individuals to struggle through poorly designed layouts, misleading marketing, and baffling management choices. To say it's exhausting and humiliating to struggle through a world that able-bodied people take for granted is putting it lightly.

Reddit apparently forgot that blind people exist, and forgot that Reddit's official app (which has had over 9 YEARS of development) and yet, when it comes to accessibility for vision-impaired users, Reddit’s own platforms are inconsistent and unreliable. ranging from poor but tolerable for the average user and mods doing basic maintenance tasks (Android) to almost unusable in general (iOS).

Didn't reddit whitelist some "accessibility apps?"

The CEO of Reddit announced that they would be allowing some "accessible" apps free API usage: RedReader, Dystopia, and Luna.

There's just one glaring problem: RedReader, Dystopia, and Luna* apps have very basic functionality for vision-impaired users (text-to-voice, magnification, posting, and commenting) but none of them have full moderator functionality, which effectively means that subreddits built for vision-impaired users can't be managed entirely by vision-impaired moderators.

(If that doesn't sound so bad to you, imagine if your favorite hobby subreddit had a mod team that never engaged with that hobby, did not know the terminology for that hobby, and could not participate in that hobby -- because if they participated in that hobby, they could no longer be a moderator.)

Then Reddit tried to smooth things over with the moderators of r/blind. The results were... Messy and unsatisfying, to say the least.

https://www.reddit.com/r/Blind/comments/14ds81l/rblinds_meetings_with_reddit_and_the_current/

*Special shoutout to Luna, which appears to be hustling to incorporate features that will make modding easier but will likely not have those features up and running by the July 1st deadline, when the very disability-friendly Apollo app, RIF, etc. will cease operations. We see what Luna is doing and we appreciate you, but a multimillion dollar company should not have have dumped all of their accessibility problems on what appears to be a one-man mobile app developer. RedReader and Dystopia have not made any apparent efforts to engage with the r/Blind community.

Thank you for your time & your patience.

/r/riddles Community Survey - Results

Esteemed citizens of /r/riddles! This is your landed gentry here with the results of our democratic poll.

Democracy
In Action

A full 75% of you favor some form of protest, with "remain private" nosing out "change the definition of riddle". The people have spoken!

However, since our Lord and Master sp3z has been "democratically" removing mods of subs that have remained private, and since it's hard to continue to fight a battle if you are removed from the playing field, we your landed gentry have decided on a compromise: go public, but require approval for every submission. And of course, since we are but a humble handful of unpaid volunteers whose families do not belong to the 1%, it can take up to 2 weeks for processing and approval.

A reminder of some of what we're fighting for: Because use of the API is now prohibitively expensive, the moderators of /r/blind won't be able to moderate, nor will people who only use mobile apps and not the website. 3rd party apps exist for a reason: because there are some things the native apps just can't/don't do, and for many people this goes far beyond "inconvenient".

We and the 3rd party devs we stand in solidarity with thank you for your support.

/r/riddles Community Survey - Subreddit Future

I'm sure many here are aware that changes to Reddit's API are coming. These API changes will kill the third party apps that built Reddit into the community we enjoy today, make moderation more difficult, and will generally be harmful for users' experience. This is because Reddit is planning an IPO this year and is making an effort to quickly boost revenue, even if it costs them the platform in the long run. It only matters to them that they appear profitable when they cash out.

Learn more about this here.

[EDIT - ADDITIONAL CONTEXT: There has been a new development in the protest. Reddit has threatened several subreddits forcing them to re-open, pitting moderators against each other and attempting to pit users against moderators. /r/memes is currently only allowing landed gentry memes in response to a comment from sp3z.]

Our Suggestion

Seeing the actions of other communities like /r/memes and /r/programmerhumor, the mod team have discussed our next steps, and our preference is to open the community, but with a twist. Instead of requiring text posts, we would like to require image/media posts. Instead of focusing the community on word puzzle riddles, we would like to focus the community on other variants on the word Riddle:

  • Things "riddled" with something else
  • Things featuring Tom "sp3z" Riddle
  • Things that rhyme with "riddle" or "riddles"

How do we want to respond as a community? Feel free to voice your thoughts in the comments, and please complete this survey

Before any changes I’m a garlic or spice

Before any changes I’m a garlic or spice. My first is altered and I’m a hand-warming device. My second is changed and I’m trees in full bloom. The next letter change makes a deathly old tomb. Change the fourth to make a fruit of the vine. Change the last for a chart plotted with lines. What was I? What did I become? What did I turn out to be?

/r/riddles will go offline June 12 and will stay offline until at least June 16 to protest Reddit killing 3rd party apps

As the moderation team of /r/riddles, we have concerns about recent changes to Reddit.

A recent Reddit policy change threatens to kill many beloved third-party mobile apps, making a great many quality-of-life features not seen in the official mobile app permanently inaccessible to users, including but not limited to text-to-voice technology for redditors with visual impairments.

On May 31, 2023, Reddit announced they were raising the price to make calls to their API from being free to a level that will kill every third party app on Reddit, from Apollo to Reddit is Fun to Narwhal to BaconReader to Relay.

Even if you're not a mobile user and don't use any of those apps, this is a step toward killing other ways of customizing Reddit, such as Reddit Enhancement Suite or the use of the old.reddit.com desktop interface.

This isn't only a problem for users: many subreddit moderators depend on tools only available outside the official app to keep their communities on-topic and spam-free.

Accordingly, the moderation team of /r/riddles is declaring its opposition to this API pricing change, and will be shutting down the subreddit in solidarity for at least 5 days starting June 12th. Yes, we are a small, low-traffic sub and our going dark will not have the same impact as the large subs going dark, but in addition to standing in solidarity with other subreddit moderators, many of the mod team, who are redditors just like you, will be boycotting reddit during that time.

Find out what you can do to help at /r/Save3rdPartyApps - or, if you moderate a subreddit, its sister sub /r/ModCoord.
