Please:

  1. Do not threaten, harass, insult, incite violence Be kind -- and use reddiquette
  2. No Link Posts to Pinterest, Etsy, Kickstarter, IG, blogs, YouTube, etc. /r/knitting is not here to increase traffic to IG, blogs or YT channels. We filter out Etsy, Kickstarter, Pinterest. etc. Linking inside TEXT-posts is usually OK; it allows for more background information to be shared with the community. Review our [Spam] rule (7). Post in the bi-weekly [Buy-Sell-Trade-Promote] thread instead. We post it on Thursdays, you can find it perma-stickied in the top banner. [Or you know, ask us.]
  3. If your post is NSFW please first think of others. This includes: visible genitalia, swear words in any language, explicit amigurumi.
  4. Please -- no memes, pets, cutes, funnies without pattern information. Use care with humor and avoid posting memes or pictures without a strong knitting connection. Consider posting to /r/yarntrolls, r/casualknitting, r/drunkknitting or other knitting subs. Make sure to include knitting pattern information (per rule 6) if your picture happens to include a pet with knitting.
  5. Yarn/Stash/Notions/Tattoos are for Weekends only. RECENT PURCHASES such as Yarn and/or Stash and/or Notions and or pictures of your new knitting tattoo go in the "Look What I Got" thread which is posted on Weekends. Because yarn could be used in any sort of fiber craft it is not necessarily knitting specific. Some exceptions for mega-acquisition times (like the holidays) might occur but will be explicitly stated by a moderator.
  6. Add yarn and pattern details to the comment section. Finished Object [FO] and Works In Progress (WIP) posts should include design and yarn info. Check back to answer questions. Don't post and disappear! Your project can inspire others if they can find the pattern or match the yarn. Put [FO] or [WIP] in [brackets] in your title for automatic flair. DESIGNERS are allowed ONE post per FO and only 1 (one) pattern per week to front page. Contact mods if you have questions or would like your project to receive the Designer FO Flair.
  7. SPAM. We're a community, not a bulletin board or marketplace. Keep promotional content to the bi-weekly Buy-Sell-Trade-Promote thread. It is posted on Thursdays and can be found perma-stickied in the top banner. The exception is that pattern designers may make 1 (one) post per pattern and only 1 (one) pattern per week. Yarn dyers, spinners, or other related makers should continue to post only in the promotional thread.
  8. Respect International Copyright, not just US/CA, and do not post pictures of patterns. If you're posting enough of a pattern that a reasonably competent knitter could recreate the item (e.g. entire cable chart for a cabled hat or mittens) that's probably too much. It's probably fair to ask that they only post the portion of the pattern that they absolutely require clarification on. Do Not Ask To Share Patterns.* <--This is a bannable offense. When in doubt, message the mods.*

Our goal:

To maintain a vibrant, commerce-free haven for interaction, discovery, and growth through knitting. Promotional links, memes without a significant knitting connection, and images posted without comments or background information may be removed -- but can often be posted in one of the related subs below.

Fingering-weight shawl pattern hunt

I have some really special fingering weight yarn. It’s hand-dyed and variegated. For that reason (and because school is currently frying my brain), I’d like to find a simple shawl or shawlette pattern to showcase a busy, colorful yarn. Maybe something with a lot of stockinette and some yarn-overs, or similar?

What are your favorite simple, relaxing shawl patterns that may suit?

P.S. I have about 900 yards.

What went wrong?

As title says, I have no idea what I messed up here and even less of a clue how to fix as I am a total beginner. I counted my stitches and have the correct amount. Thank you for your help!

mixing wools with different washing temperature?

I am planning on knitting a sweater with brooklyn tweed tones light american columbia wool (recommended to hand wash cold) and loft 100% wool (recommended hand wash warm) Will the worst that happens is color bleeding? or will it mess with the finished fabric?

My gauge is too tight for the sweater. can I adjust size?

PATTERN: hanstholm sweater

hi. i might be effed. i’m knitting a sweater and I’m a decent ways into the yoke.

pattern calls for gauge of 21 stitches 28 rows (per four inches)

i’m getting 25 stitches 34 rows

using a sport and lace held together as opposed to the DK pattern suggests.

i was dumb and dropped down a needle size in the yoke from what was suggested.

could I just jeep increasing to a few sizes larger before putting the sleeves on hold?

my grandma made this 🥺

My grandma's stainless steel cup doesn't have a handle, so she knitted a cozy cover for it with a carrying strap on top, almost like a mini bag. Unfortunately, I didn't get a picture of the top with the strap

First sweater!

Started my first sweater for a baby gift. So far so good! I think I’m going to use DPNs when I get to the sleeves instead of the magic loop method. I don’t like how loose inbetween stitches gets for me with the magic loop.

I inherited a lovely yarn stash from my best friend's nana. As someone who normally loom knits, what would be the best way to go about finishing her needle projects?

Hello, I am hoping that this lovely sub may be able to help me.

My best friend's nana passed away last year, and they recently got around to cleaning out her house. I have been loom knitting for a few years now (mostly making beanies, scarves, and a few baby blankets), so they asked me if I would like her yarn. Of course, I said yes.

They brought by two storage totes a couple of hours ago. The first was primarily filled with beautiful yarn, including a bunch of merino blends (my yarn-loving heart is incredibly happy!). When I opened up the second tote, in addition to more yarn there were also many projects in various stages of completion. I will admit - I cried at seeing some of the pieces. The time, love, and care that went into making them... I feel truly honored to have inherited this.

I have decided that I would like to finish two of the projects for my best friend and her mom, who is like a second mom to me, as a surprise for Christmas.

The piece I would like my best friend to have is a [mostly-finished orange sweater](https://i.imgur.com/GIVXOo1.jpg). [One sleeve is missing](https://i.imgur.com/xLNbr5D.jpg), and the [hem](https://i.imgur.com/9ciGmdS.jpg) and sleeve that is present have strings that need to be sewn in.

I'm not entirely sure [what this one is](https://i.imgur.com/8Qj4VyH.jpg), but it kind of looks like a shawl? I was thinking Mama H would like it. It is on a big circular knitting needle. (If this isn't a shawl, please feel free to let me know what it actually is!)

I suppose my main questions are:

  1. Would it be possible for me to attempt to finish these on a knitting loom, or would using knitting needles be better?
  2. If the former, how would I go about transferring them to the loom and finishing them off?
  3. If the latter, would anyone be able to recommend relatively easy patterns for someone that has never used knitting needles, that would achieve a matching appearance to the parts already present?

A big thank you to anyone willing to help!

I also wanted to share some pictures of some of the other amazing things I found in the storage totes, some of which I would also like to finish for her eventually. Nana was super talented! I'd like to be half as good as her someday.

Here is a [beautiful blue scarf](https://i.imgur.com/OtTVCOv.jpg) that I folded into quarters for the picture. This is likely the only piece that I will actually keep for myself. It is my favorite shade of blue, and the texture is very satisfying to run my hands over.

[I really like this beanie.](https://i.imgur.com/78lsPI4.jpg)

Here is a single [baby moccasin, with a matching hat](https://i.imgur.com/tFPPMAq.jpg)! I squeed at this.

[A baby shawl](https://i.imgur.com/uvWC9Vl.jpg)! This looks to only be missing a button? Perhaps I could knit a little flower or bumblebee or something and attach it, as well as add a button. I absolutely love the detailing on this.

[These arm warmers](https://i.imgur.com/JlI2Q3e.jpg). One is finished. The other appears to be mostly finished, but the sides need to be attached so that it forms a tube. Very soft.

[Another baby shawl](https://i.imgur.com/c78NkRW.jpg)! The sleeves on this one still need to be finished, threads sewn in, and button added. This one is probably my favorite.

[A third baby shawl](https://i.imgur.com/SyBomRP.jpg)! This one honestly looks really good as is.

Anyone else have one of these? Get one!

I’m finishing up a sweater and found a stitch with a snag. This little thing is a lifesaver for snags and splitty yarn! Overpriced but it does work. I think it’s called a Snag-it. You just put it on top of the snag and push through the fabric and it pulls the unsightly bit to the wrong side.

I am accidentally making 70s upholstery socks

I thought I was really doing something cool with the color choices here and I'm realizing it really looks like some gaudy 70s upholstery fabric LOL

Tips to block this?

It's 100% acrylic for the fuzzy parts and 100% polyester for the other half. I saw Eucalan Fine Fabric Wash would work for the material, but I'm nervous about loosing the 'furriness'

Tubular cast on / bind off for p2k3 rib?

I did tubular cast on / bind off in my previous project and loved it but it was a 1x1 rib and there was lots of resources for it. This rib doesn’t seem as common (it’s basically a whole tank top in this rib pattern) so I’m looking for resources to do this - I’m open to other methods that are seamless or close to it!

Will this block out?

Hello knitters! I am currently knitting my sleeve and am not so sure about how it’s looking… I picked up like you would for a vertical edge, but there is a distance between the picked up edge and the stitches on the body. Will this block out? I made sure to not pick up the stitches loosely… or am I picking them up wrong?

Thank you! Any input is appreciated :))

First go in years, what stitch next?

Bashed out a little knit and frog refresh.

Haven't picked up needles in 7+ years, I only ever made small Jean Greenhowe-esque toys like my Gran taught me.

I only know how to cast on&off knit, purl, ktog and slip.

Any ideas on next stitch to learn, or easy patterns?

Thank you!

Piazza Tee

Currently working on a Piazza Tee by the amazing Sari Nordlund. I swore off knitting a while ago, convinced it wasn’t for me. Then I found combination knitting and everything just clicked. Like I’m a chart reading beast now somehow idk. Anyways yarn is Daylights by Harrisville Designs in the color way “lint” (it’s the purple one for those familiar). Just wanted to share a WIP I am simply ecstatic about. Happy knitting everyone!

Short circular needles?

I'm very new to knitting and when I was purchasing needles I bought a set of short(16inches from tip to tip) circular needles. They were too small for the hat i started so I bought 30 inch. What are short circular needles used for?

Vogue knitting pattern chart spring/summer 2007?

Hello! I have just posted this in r/vintageknitting but wanted to post here too.

I've got the physical copy of this pattern which is the vogue knitting spring/summer pattern 5 CROSS STRAMP TANK.

The magazine directs you to the online site https://www.vogueknitting.com/pattern-help/charts/chart-spring-summer-2007/ for the cable pattern chart. The link unfortunately does not work.

Does anyone have a copy of this by any chance or a way I'd be able to access it? I've emailled vogue knitting with no response. I've also tried way back machine and didn't see anything but could just be my fault as I'm not sure how to use this site!

Thanks so much for any help. I've attached a photo of the pattern.
