Surprising closed minded

I wrote a post about Republican views and values. I also wrote a post about diversity and including celebrating White people. I am amazed at the number of mean cruel insensitive close minded posts that I got in response to what I wrote. I was always so proud of this community for being open minded, but I know now I may have gauged the general Ithaca community incorrectly. I am saddened by this. I have lived here my whole life.

Tall point in Ithaca

I’ve been living in Ithaca for all my life, and sometime this week I want to get some long exposure shots of the highway with my digital camera. So I’m wondering if anyone knows by memory a point high enough (that’s legal to get to) that can look down on the highway. Probably in Cornell as it’s already pretty high up. There’s just a ton of trees.

If you know a spot, please tell me!

Cat struck by truck on Trumansburg Rd

I’m posting this in case this cat belongs to anyone and they can’t find them in the next few days. I just witnessed a cat fatally struck by a truck at 1006 Trumansburg Rd. Small white cat with dark spots. Seemed to be well taken care of but did not see a collar. Was not breathing when I checked. I’m really fucking sorry if they belonged to you.

To whoever said behind me at Apple Fest: "I knew logically but I forgot emotionally how many people come here each year," I feel this in my bones.

"How to create a web comic" at Tuesday Comic Book Club meeting

At the meeting on Tuesday, October 1, 2024 of the Comic Book Club of Ithaca, we will take a look at what is involved with starting your own web comic.  Once you have an idea, and your friends are looking forward to seeing your work, and you even have an inspiration for the second story line ... what's next?  How do you translate all that good stuff into actual bytes and pixels?  Drop by the CBCI meeting on October 1, when several Club members who have published their own web comics, will walk us through the steps involved!

7-8 PM, at the Tompkins County Public Library, at the Schwarz Jacobson Room

Honda dealership recs

Im new to Ithaca and I have a brake system light in my car that I would like to get checked. The car was bought from a Honda dealership in a different state and it is still under warranty. I heard to avoid Maguire but I’m not sure about other alternatives. Given it’s a brake system light I’m not sure how far I can drive it either. Thanks!

Where are all the EV charging locations

For Ithaca being such a granola crunchy town, I'm shocked there are not more free( or any really) EV charging stations. There a few Tesla ones near Trader Joe's but thats it really. I thought for sure Wegmans or Green Star would have one. Green Star has one u have to pay for and download an app. What is the point of having an EV if the only place you can really charge it at is a home? :p

Murals

Is anyone able to identify a single mural in Ithaca Ny that depicts a white person? I’m honestly curious because I’ve been keeping an eye out and I don’t see that anywhere!

Republican

I am Republican and feel isolated here in Ithaca. Are there any groups etc. that would help me connect with other like minded folks?

The midweek mingle

Someone help me out here. The other day I was thinking of helping my friend work up the courage to go to karaoke speed dating, but apparently I would've had to participate. Online dating sucks and there's no place to openly approach people to date. Speed dating is exhausting and not very good for for many. There's a growing trend of non-drinking so bars are increasingly out of favor, and you can't make noise in libraries.

I was thinking something like once a week . on Wednesdays, downtown on the commons, called the Midweek Mingle. Just... The knowledge that if you're walking down the Commons on Wednesday you're looking.

And, like, get the businesses in on the game and like, maybe their friends are having dinner in Aurora street and cheer them on when they come back with a number/IG handle?

Could this be a thing? It sounds doable and cheap but idek who you ask about something like this?

(No, I'm not looking to date, I'm happily married :) But for my friends that are quite desperately looking, I don't find a lot of options.

Ginkgo trees in town?

Weird request, but does anyone know of some Ginkgo tree locations either in town or on Cornell's campus? I need to take some reference photos of their leaves for a project and realize with the seasons changing the clock is ticking.

Edit: Thanks everyone! Looks like I'll be scouting Clinton and Seneca while I'm downtown for Apple Fest. Much appreciated.

Looking for people to game with

I don't have much free time but I want to get back into gaming with others rather than playing single player games ie God of War, Elden Ring, and Tears of the kingdom. Wanna start playing COD or league of legends again. I kinda want an evening where I can just game with a few people.

Big animal in the intersection by alternatives bank

Did anyone see an animal that looked like a wolf or something run through the road yesterday 9/25, around 7 pm???? Maybe it sounds dumb to say wolf but it was a big grey dog like animal and it was so fast. Really bad photo but it didn’t look like a dog

Landing an EMT gig in this area

Current Cornell junior, who got my NYS EMT-B certification back in summer '23. To say it has been quite an uphill battle looking for EMT positions here in ITH is an understatement. I haven't had any success with the volunteer fire departments (PSA for Jrs/Srs: Cayuga Heights FD does not recruit upperclassmen); also submitted my application to Bangs last week after getting turned down last spring (presumably because I indicated I wouldn't be staying in ITH for the summer) and have not heard back ever since about any aspect of my application including the status, timeline, etc, despite a follow up. Given my junior status, CUEMS is without a doubt out of the question (not that I would have gotten in if I wanted to). How does one go about finding EMT gigs in the area?

Anyone know of place where I can buy marigolds in the area?

Ideally a u-pick situation but potted works too. My partner wasn't able grow any this year and I'd love to gift them some.

Ithaca Dog Owners: Important Notice about Algae!!

Just saw a report about a rise in harmful algal bloom in Cayuga lake (pasted below). This algae can be VERY dangerous, even deadly, if ingested by humans and animals (pasted below). All people with dogs should keep their dogs out of the water and away from things that have been in contact with the water.

Stolen bike off Cornell Campus

Hello! My girlfriend’s Aventon Aventure 2 e-bike cobalt blue with fat tires was stolen on Tuesday 9/24/24 from the Reilly Robb bike rack. The chain lock was cut and left there. We are looking to see if anyone knows of someone who would be willing to search “the jungle” for her missing bike.

Visiting for the Apple Harvest Festival, looking for recommendations

Good morning everyone,

I was in Watkins Glens a few weeks back and took a bus back down to NYC from Downtown Ithaca. I was only in the area for an hour but the walkable downtown and surrounding nature really left an impression, and I've wanted to visit again since.

I'll have the chance to visit Ithaca this upcoming Saturday morning - Sunday afternoon and saw there's the 42nd apple harvest festival in the same downtown area. If I don't have the chance to visit again until next year, what would should I prioritize seeing/going to while in town for the festival ?Anything from stores, restaurants, vendors at the market, etc. I won't have a car but I'm happy to take the TCAT bus to any trails you think are great to hike this time of year.

Thank you for taking the time to read and for your recommendations!

Instantcart

Just an FYI. If you are ordering through instacart for your groceries. No tip or a 2.00 tip is just unacceptable. I don't think customers realize that instacart does not pay us a lot on batches at all 🤦‍♀️
