Fox/BTN freelancer hotel booking

Was wondering if there are other Fox/BTN freelancers that have been having hotels booked for them. Did they change their policy of paying for the hotel and then you just pay the incidental fee?

I’m an independent contractor who didn’t get paid, what should I do?

I was doing freelance PR work for this wacky ass leggings company. The owner was such a loser. He was 3 invoices behind when he randomly decides to fire me, then claims he doesn’t need to pay because he let me go? I reached out to his investors trying to explain the situation, which made the owner literally spam my phone saying he’s going to sue me for libel lmao. Idk if i’m providing enough details, but I called small claims and they said i’d have to go to court which is personally sounds like a pain in the ass. It was my first freelance gig after college so this kinda sucks

should I quit this freelancing job?

I've been freelancing with this company for a year now. They offered me a contract after my 6 months internship as a software engineer there to continue because they still need my help. However, there are some issues. Even though I work full-time hours, I get paid less than the regular employees and only for the time I spend fixing things or adding new stuff, not for being on standby (I asked to be responsive when the client or the qa has questions regarding to the software). This means I'm always available for eight hours a day, but only get paid when I'm actively working.

There's also pressure to finish tasks quickly, even if it means working during my university hours. On the plus side, I can work from anywhere. I need the money as my parents don't have enough money to provide for my daily needs. I worry about finding another job because in my country, undergrads often work for free. Should I stick with this job or quit?

Late Payment - Interest Calculations UK

I have a client that continually pays late and this month has decided to ignore all reminders. The monthly payment is a 'pre-payment' so she's using the services for 2 weeks and doesn't look like she has any intention of paying. This is a web hosting service, which is still active.

If I send a late payment invoice with compensation and interest (as per my terms and standard terms in the UK), how does the interest bit work?

For example if you work out the interest due by today, and put that on the invoice and give then 30 days to pay, then if she pays on day 29, that interest total is 29 days out of date?

Fiverr asking for temporary reservation funds!! IS IT A SCAM??

I have received a new offer from a client, who has paid me UPFRONT, which is oddly suspicious. Then I see a link on my email where it show the payment but when I continue on that page it asks for my card information sends me a code on my phone and shows a charge of 224.03 USD as temporary reservation funds to deal with frauds. Is that a normal procedure and;

Why would a client willingly pay upfront without even discussing their wants?

Why do I have to give my card details, when I already have a paypal account linked to my fiverr account?

Client owes me 25k. What are my options?

So I've been working for the same employer for 3+ years and he started missing more and more payments. I'm completely done working with him at this point, its been a mess for the whole time we've been in business together. I just want to squeeze as much as possible out of these missing payments and wash my hands clean of the guy.

As far as I'm aware; my options are:

  1. Invoice Factoring
  2. Debt Collection Agency
  3. Litigation

I think factoring is the best option? Never had something like this happen to me... If anyone has suggestions for a good company I can work with to get this done ASAP would be appreciated. I'm in the US and the employer is in CA. It's for web dev work and we weren't under any contract but I do have a ton of evidence to support what I'm owed.

Friday Freelance Behaviors

As freelancers you can sometimes drive how you manage your time, bc you're managing your clients. Do you work as usual on Fridays or is it a no meeting type of day? What are your Friday behaviors as a freelancer?

For me, I am.both an EA/PA and project manager. I make Fridays a no meeting day. I work thru tasks, catch up on work and try to have head down work blocks of time. And I jump on job boards to find new freelancing opportunities. I try to make Fridays as stress free as possible.

Can I use an Adobe free trial for commercial use?

I've paid for the creative cloud tons of times before and have receipts for it, but I only need one small project to be done in premiere. I can't find anything about adobe not allowing commercial work in their free trials, but I know that you can't use education licenses for commercial work and was wondering if it's the same for work done in a trial period. I'm an independent contractor that does digital animation if that helps.

Is what my employer doing illegal?

So, for a bit of context, I'm a teacher that is contracted by a private school. This school is contacted by primary, secondary schools, and companies for classes, and they assign teachers to these classes, and take a percentage of the total payment. We are paid by class, and need to invoice them monthly.

So, my issue is, they have it in their terms and conditions that classes cancelled 24 hours and more prior to the lesson are cancelled, and anything under 24h is considered cancelled, but the client still pays for it, as it inconveniences the teacher and makes their prep worthless, etc. So this isn't the first time I or other teachers at this school have had this issue, but the school that hires us claims to be contacted by the clients beyond the 24h mark, but will only tell us freelancers several hours later.

My question is, should we still insist on being paid, as we specifically weren't aware of the cancellation until after the period?

How do I tell a client that the work they are giving me needs more hours?

I work in marketing and communications for a non-profit as an independent contractor, initially I was set to do 24h/week. I am the only person who would do all their marketing/communication. They couldn’t do full time due to budget constraints. I was ok with this setup with the information given at the beginning, however the scope of my work kept increasing and deadlines got tighter (with lots of short notice tasks).

How do I tell them I need to work more hours to get all the work done, I don’t think they understand how much time it takes to do the tasks as they are mostly older and not very tech savvy.

I don’t mind working more hours as this is currently my only client (working on getting more) but I simply can’t get all they’re asking me to do done in the time I’m given.

Do you put your clients on LI?

Hi everyone - I’ve been debating on whether or not I should list my clients on LI as “jobs” I hold if that makes sense?

My thought is that it might make me look a little more legit versus just putting that I’m a self-employed consultant because anyone can put that and it doesn’t mean they actually have clients or work.

For context, I offer about 15-20 hours per week to each firm I work with and obviously I would only put clients I’m working with on a longer term basis (ie. I wouldn’t list a company I’m only working with on a short term project or something).

I’ve seen other freelancers/consultants in my industry list the companies as jobs and then put “contract - part time” or “freelance.”

Anyways, just wanted to see what you all do and if there are cons or negatives I’m not thinking about with doing this.

People (clients) who don't deliver what they say they will deliver (major rant ahead)

I don't think this rant is necessarily a freelance issue, but this has been on my mind for some time and I need to get it off my chest.

The vast majority of professional people that I deal with on a day-to-day basis consistently fail to deliver assets or work that they promise. Things I need, or things their clients need, I seem to have to constantly chase, and yet I seldom receive it when I need it. They say "I'll get you X by such a date..." and then never do.

I chase them before I need it, the day I need it, the day after they fail to deliver it.

"I'll get you that / I'll chase X right now for it!"

Guess what? They don't.

Right now, I'm currently hanging around for a client who knew I had penciled in today to work for a major task that they need doing, only to be waiting on them for stuff I've been chasing for three weeks.

Another example: a client that I whitelabel for - I've been asking them to send some work to their client for the past month for their signoff, for a time-sensitive event of theirs. Their client has expressed the urgency, so I completed my work the day they asked for it. My client has been sat on it since. I had sent it to them early and asked them to send to their client for signoff weeks ago.

"I'll send it to them right now!", they said last week, after several chases.

I just chased them a few days back "have you sent X to so and so, because I've still not had confirmation from you to go ahead? They mentioned how urgent it was, so just checking."

"no, sorry I've been busy! I'll do that now!"

I've chased 4 times on that particular one. Guess what - I chased again today and my client is away (without telling me nor their client, I may add), and their client has sent an awkward email asking why I haven't pushed it live.

Now what's interesting is that one of my other clients who I get on very well with, him and I were having a nice heart to heart . He says something to me that I haven't been able to shake off my mind since:

"I like working with you, because you say you're going to do something, and then you do it."

That was a great thing to hear. But I just... I can't understand. Is doing your job actually that much of a rarity? Do most clients have bad experiences with people because they don't do what they say they do?

Hell, even my own clients don't give me what I need to do the job they're paying me to do. So I'm sat twiddling my thumbs while they do what it is they do or decide is more important (or don't do) each day.

Like I say, this is a rant. I think I'm going to take the rest of the day off and tell my client I can't keep on waiting for them until they give me the stuff I asked for weeks ago, and which they promised to send me this morning only yesterday evening after chasing for the past 3 weeks. Maybe I'll say I'll get it done today and see how they feel when I disappear for a week.

What systems, apps, and tools do you use to freelance your freelance business?

Systemization is king, especially with increased workload or the numerous clients we're often juggling simultaneously.

I'm curious what systems/apps/tools the freelancers in the audience incorporate into their workflows to automate/speed up/simplify/etc. some of their more monotonous tasks.

Paying for ads - worth it?

I'm going through a quiet patch at the minute and I'm not used to it, so I'm looking at ways of trying to drum up more interest.

Has anyone used Google Ads or Linkedin Ads and have they made a difference to you getting noticed or contacted?

The ads services seem to be aimed at bigger businesses so I wondered if they still worked for a freelancer as well.

TIA.

Booking in work months in advance

I've been freelancing for many years but have previously been pretty undisciplined at saying no to clients and scheduling work; I'd fall into the trap of saying I could take on a project quite soon due to fear they'd not want to wait. However over the last couple of years I've been slowly putting better practices in, to the point where I'm now scheduling in work for the end of the year.

I'm wondering how folks here handle the booking in of work so far down the line; do you ask for a contract to be signed that at least books a lot or even ask for a deposit? The problem is that on this work the scope is unknown so a discovery phase is the initial part of the project, to determine exactly what's been done which even itself is not a given how long it would run (its a day rate) so I would only be using estimates (perhaps a minimum number of days could be booked).

Or of course some may just receive an email confirmation and that's that.

Curious what others do here - thanks!

Long time client threatening to sue if I approach their clients

Hi all,

Little backstory; I’ve been a freelance experiential designer and project manager for about 10 years now. The first 8 years of hustling led me to working for two steady clients.

One client that just terminated me is threatening to sue me if I pursue any contacts I made through them over the past two years. It’s important to note that I have never signed a non-compete or non-solicit, and (for better or worse) we don’t have any written or verbal agreement on the terms of my “employment.” The services I provide to them are a fraction of their total business (studio services).

I don’t plan on “stealing” any business from them since I have some relative form of moral compass, but I do plan on reaching out to clients that I have maintained a good report with (designing seasonal expos, repeat work, etc) to offer my services to help maintain continuity and seamlessness in the future.

I fully understand that you can sue anyone for literally anything but is there legal ground here that would negatively impact me? I have my lawyer drawing up a letterhead but the last thing I want is to get sucked into the legal system to burn money for nothing.

How to politely tell an existing client more hours are needed.

I recently started up freelancing again and got a client in social branding. We initially discussed 10 hours a week with the potential for more. The first two weeks I fulfilled this, however, client had to go to an event where she was unavailable for a few days. Fast forward 2 weeks and while she has told me that she will follow up I've now gone two weeks without any work.

What is the nice way to explain that if she's not going to give me 10 hours a week I cannot commit that many hours to her and I need to pursue other clients. I don't want to threaten to leave but I need her to know I'm not aimlessly sitting around hoping for work.

TIA!

unexpected pay cut(comic)

Nothing in writing but the arrangement was set as $75 per page. They did $80 once, then this time they casually say they will give me $20 as a "gesture". I know their magazine is always on the brink of bankruptcy but they sell it at a cost, so I don't know why I'd be expected to take this drastic pay cut and it sets a precedent.

I think they like my strip and I literally had 0 other offers from the many publications I submitted this 3-panel newspaper-espque animal comic to. Should I deny and risk not being able to develop this thing further, or take the offer and tell them I can't do this again?

I'm looking for resources for pitch deck templates, SOWs, to send to a client. Any good referrals?

I need to send a quote to a potential client and I want it to be nicer than an email but I want to get a good premade template that already has a lot of the info and layout that I'd need.

I mainly want to be able to show the pricing, breakdown of scope, and timeline, all in a nice way.

Any recommendations?

is being rich as a freelancer a thing?

don't mock me, i'm a 15yo just wondering. i wanted to know, is earning 10k+ a month by freelancing (web dev, copywriting, web design ecc.) real? i see all of these gurus saying it's easy...that really do make me feel like it's fake. i know there is no way that you earn 10k a month by not working your ass off (even 12+ hours a day), and I'm ready to do that. i just want to know what i should expect. any of you earning a GOOD amount freelancing? do you know someone that does? even if you don't, what are your thoughts on that? (english isn't my first language)

edit: your 10k equals our 2k here. so It would be 50k. Sorry for the missunderstanding, didn't think It would be such a huge difference

Is what I feel valid?

I just started this new freelance cold calling gig that requires 8 hours a day. I was referred by a friend and accepted it since my writing gigs have been "slow" these days. I'm mainly a writer but I have exp in phone customer service so I guess they considered me qualified to take calls. Anyway, they're in real estate. I told them I've no experience in this niche btw and they still brought me on board anyway. My friend who referred me said job was easy. Ask a few questions and call's over. But nooo. When I started, apparently, I also have to learn how they give price estimates for properties. Again, I've no background on real estate. It was all new to me.

So, my first week, I can reach 180 calls (picked up and no answer) and I'm completely tired after that. I was only made aware I should be able to take 200-250 calls on my second day. Okay, I thought maybe that's doable as time passes. But I'm now on my second week and the agent I work under is now telling me to make sure I reach at least 250 calls per 8 hrs when 3rd week comes in. I still average 180-190 a day. The demand to reach the 250 calls quota pressured me too much. I expressed my sentiments, of course. I'm still waiting for their response. Now, pay isn't even much tbh. Not even worth 200 calls a day. Should I drop them? How do I go about that? I am stressed about it atm

How to bill clients as a freelancer

Hi everyone, I'm a UI designer looking to venture into freelancing but I'm not sure how the billing works. Do you guys bill clients base on how many screens you designing for and the complexity of the project? Or do you bill per hour of the work you going to invest into the project?

I also will like to know the process involve in getting them to sign contract agreement?

I will appreciate any helpful and useful advise from you all.

Thank you all in advance.

Am i wrong for this?

Quick context, im a music teacher (freelancer) and 2 years ago i made a Sample Pack and sold to a few of my students, and yesterday one guy that bought the pack (not even my student nowdays) asked me for another copy of the files as he somehow lost the pack, I dont even have the files anymore as its been 2 years since i created those files.

And even if i had i wouldnt be interested on seding the files again as its his responsability to keep those files....i also feel kind of "dumb" by spending my working time with somebody that im not working with...

am i wrong for this?

What are your productivity hacks on software projects that can save you at least 30 mins?

In this age of AI, have you found ways to make software tasks (requirements gathering/coding/project management/UI UX design) more efficient or productive?

Ex: Is coding still manually done? Has anyone found ways to build customized code (over 100 lines) faster or more efficiently? How about code generators?

Freelance for 3 years but company is quiet firing me

Hello! I work as a freelance photo retoucher. I’ve been working remote with a company for 3 years and I need some advice. The first year I’ve work for this company I was basically working full time. 40 hours a week. The 2nd year the winter leading into spring, work was very scarce so I just took it as a sign to take a vacation. It’s now the 3rd year of me working here. January and February there has been no work for me at all. I check in on the first or March to see if there will be any work for me coming up and they said it was still slow. That’s not entirely true because I see my other coworkers getting work in our shared excel sheet. What can I do about this? Do I have any rights as a freelancer to know if I’ll be working again anytime soon, especially since I’ve been working for 3 years at this company?

Customer requires invoices via Candex - red flag?

I have a new customer (huge company) who requires that vendors invoice through a system called Candex. Now this is for a minor one-off job, so I am worried that this Candex system will require a lot of administrative overhead on my part and maybe not worth the hassle. Does anyone have experience with customers using Candex or similar systems?

What are your acquisition strategies ?

How do you find your clients ?

I'm a freelance SaaS developer and I mainly focus on MVPs and first iterations. My clients mostly are seasoned entrepreneurs and early stage startups

My strategy is to identify my client profile type on LinkedIn, research whatever I can about their business thematics and send a very targeted message that shows I know the subject and that I can help them with their SaaS.

It's time consuming and can miss the target if the person isn't actually looking to build a SaaS, but it is also very effective if I come at the right time. Most of the clients I signed with this strategy told me they chose me because of the level of interest I showed when contacting them

What are your strategies ?

Bon Appetit Writing Gig

Hey! I just found that bon appetit hires freelancers on a project basis. Has anyone tried this? If so I have a few questions:

  1. Do they hire writers from outside of the US?
  2. Do they hire writers that are not subscribed to them?
  3. What payment method do they use?
