You Broke My Heart, Bella

I just want to say ... you aren't worth the tears I cry. Okay, I lie. B/c you are. But I'm so angry and sad. And I'm gonna miss you. And you coulda warned a girl with some flowers or a conversation in a public place. I wouldn't have freaked out! I wouldn't have! I just woulda put my head down, like it is now. And I guess let you go. But... I'll always love you and miss you, Bella of Alberta. Always in my heart. I'll miss you.

Community Table!

Hello! Hope this post finds you in good health and in the equivalent to whatever happy is! A few months ago I posted this- https://reddit.com/r/PortlandFood/s/QW0yOGHGPV - The respond was wild! Unfortunately, I wasn’t in the place to follow through but now I am! So let’s get started!

If you don’t feel like reading what’s on the link, let me summarize:

At the moment I’d like to set up a super club, called Community Table! I’m starting from the ground up and I’m searching for these things to begin: *a table (or two) that fits up to 20ish) people

  • a location ( I’m honestly okay with changing the location every time, so this is noncommittal. My apartment is just too small. It would be really amazing to be able to have access to a kitchen in this space, but an oven is a must)
  • one extra cook, someone to shoot ideas and develop recipes with.
  • any other people that want to help in ways that maybe I can’t see
  • 15- 20 hungry people who want great food and to build community

I really hope to bring members of this community together without the expectation of drinking (optional) or going to concerts. A cozy, tasty experience to make friends and relax with. This has been a dream of mine since I moved here. I’d start today if I had the table haha!

If you’re interested in helping, you can dm me or preferably fill out this form: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1y0LJ2ynWzaf7rHK07MjPzuSYx-7oe4FOqET4vtWTqBg/edit?usp=drivesdk

If you’re interested in eating, maybe please fill out this one: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1_6LnP-7qxDxwHzDcP24bDXxJG6jlZSXL2i-zrpgyXXA/edit?usp=drivesdk

If you have a table you’d trade for a meal or two, or even…. Capital send me a dm.

The goal is to have the first dinner by the end of my month. I can’t promise a huge amount, but I do make a profit I’d divide it properly with anyone who ends up helping me. But to be clear I don’t expect to make any money from this. So consider it a volunteer role with tips and food! Sorry about that. I know times are especially hard right now. I myself still struggle with a lot of financial burden. But I really want to do this!

It’s my dream to cook for a small community. I’m really looking forward to hearing what everyone has to bring to the Community Table.

Need help finding a restaurant.

So my fiancé and I are going on a 3 week road across the western US. We were going to stop in Portland 10/1 and try to get a table at Kann for that night. Unfortunately they booked up faster than my fiancé could put in our info. We’re only going to in Portland for a day and I really want to take her somewhere nice that is comparable to Kann in the sense of atmosphere and dinning experience, doesn’t have to be the type of food. She was so upset when she said she couldn’t get a reservation and I want to make sure she gets what she wanted out of our trip to Portland. Any recommendations are appropriate.

Thank you.

Need a replacement for Pot and Spicy

Our favorite sichuan hot pot and skewers place on 82nd shut down and don't know of any place like it in the greater metro area.

Don't want cook it yourself hot pot. Would like to see an option as close to Pot and Spicy as possible. The skewers and the option to add them to coup or have them fried was really cool.

Any recommendations?

Friends, food, and the pursuit of financial stability (SFW. SO SFW YOU COULD TELL YOUR BOSS)

Hellllllooooo Portland!

This is just a shot in the dark and something I’ve been thinking about for a while. I’m posting now not as an official, but to see if anyone is interested in this.

Alright! I’m a cook at a fine dining restaurant in Portland. I’m good at a very few things but cooking is something I can do. I’ve noticed that I will almost always cook too much food- and after hanging out with a large number of people who hate cooking or just don’t know how; I came to this idea.

Twice a month (maybe more maybe less) I’d like to set up a community table. 10-25 people would join together to eat a home cooked meal by me, and even a potluck style would be interesting. Then we wine dine and make friends. I’ve been living here for a lil over a year now and I’ve just failed trying to find friends. I know I’m not alone there.

Now here’s the hard part. I wanna be paid for my efforts but I know times are hard. I was considering doing a donation style. But I’m averaging that donations won’t even be enough to cover food cost. So I’m asking the people! What seems like a good general cost of two very good meals a month with new friends and drinks? I want to be fair and kind. Again this is just a soft pitch! Please reach out if interested in helping or participating. The more responses I get the easier it is to get the ball rolling.

Recap! I wanna feed you and be friends with you! It’d be dope to get paid, but if I could obtain enough donations to cover food cost then I would still do this. All right I’ve talked enough thank you!

Best French Onion Soup

Sometimes a dish just gets in my head and i can't stop thinking about it. Right now, it's french onion soup.

So, now im wondering, who has the best? I've had a few around town. I've even tried one that most people LOVE, Petite Provance, and there was some flavor in it that i didn't like.

Food truck for St Paddy's event Friday, March 17.

I'm looking for a food truck to sell at our St Paddy's event next Friday, March 17. If you're interested or know anyone, please let me know!

We have three bands (two celtic style, one folk rock) playing and a pop-up art show happening simutaneously. We're preselling tickets and hoping to have about 50 people present. This food truck will be the only food at the event. We're selling alcoholic beverages at the bar upstairs near the stage. The last event we had, for Mardi Gras, nearly everyone purchased food from the food vendor.

It's 7pm to 12am, March 17. Music starts at 8pm. The venue is called The Juicebox and it's located in The Pickle Factory, 866 N Columbia Blvd, Portland, 97217.

Thoughts on Zilla Sake?

My fiance and I are looking for a tasting menu or omakase type experience for my birthday in mid February. We really enjoy Japanese food and their omakase is less expensive than some of the other tasting menus I looked at($85 vs. $125), however I have read some mixed reviews about this restaurant. Can anyone who has been here within the last year or so share their opinions? Would also be open to other suggestions, but would prefer around $100 per person and able to book the restaurant for 3ish weeks from now(some I looked at are sadly booked for months).

Thanks y'all!

Bad coffee in the Portland, Oregon area

Why can't I get GOOD coffee in the Portland, Oregon area? You know, coffee that TASTES GOOD, SMELLS GOOD, and actually has CAFFEINE in it. Ava Roasteria in Beaverton doesn't have it, nor does See See in Beaverton just a few blocks away. Lionheart Coffee, another coffee shop just a few blocks from Ava doesn't have it either, but they also scammed me when I asked for my money back. I told the barista it was too watered down and he quickly says "oh, well I can have a shot of espresso added to it". I'm wanting my money back but when he says this I say " ok". It was STILL too watery, and I am still wanting my money back. I tell him again and he says he'll have a second shot added. Again I reluctantly say "ok", realizing this guy is just NOT GOING TO refund my money. IT WAS STILL TOO WATERED DOWN!!!!! I just give up because I notice the barista was just dripping some hot water over the espresso, not even preparing it correctly. This was months ago and I have never even considered going back. Two convenience stores, one that supposedly sells Peets Coffee even, both have the same awful " coffee". This is just Beaverton. Java Man, Golden Lotus, St Honore Boulangerie, and Peets in downtown Portland all have this awful "coffee" too. Two other Peets locations in Tualatin and Portland are the same. Is there ANYWHERE in the Portland area that you can get GOOD coffee? The Ava Roasted is even "roasts" their own beans, you can watch them do it through the window. I used to work at Coffee Bean International and know what roasted beans look like. You can see oil in the beans, they aren't the color of of Ava's, and they are WHOLE beans, not all halved and in pieces. WHERE are they getting these from even? Different types of coffee smell different too. Every place I have been it is always that same smell, like the air outside but stronger. WTF??? I have a weird sounding but possibly legit excuse for this "coffee". I think maybe whoever supplies these beans to these coffee shops is removing the oils for K-cups, then passing on what is left to them. The same thing is happening at the marijuana dispensaries, they remove what is good and then sell it anyway. Leaving you with a product that doesn,'t even get you " high". The Portland area was awful enough already, but since about this time last year there is even good coffee or good LEGAL marijuana. No wonder I am so frustrated.

Any restaurants for Thanksgiving takeout/ delivery?

Our oven is a bit busted and I don't anticipate fixing or replacing before Thanksgiving. I'd like to support a local restaurant and get a nice dinner for 4 someplace. Anyone know of anything cool, delicious, etc, where I can preorder dinner that's already cooked?

I can heat things in my oven, I just only have one working burner. We've also got a roaster and a toaster oven, but cooking a big dinner with this stuff just doesn't sound fun.

Bonus points for North side of town.

Hey! Could you give me your opinion on the culinary startup idea?

Startup idea is a marketplace for culinary professionals and those who want to cook under the guidance of professionals

Chefs and food bloggers record authorial master classes for you on cooking restaurant dishes. In each master class the recipe is shown step by step in video format, all the important details of the dish are described, without which the result will not be of high quality

We hypothesize that this step-by-step approach will help improve the quality and outcome of cooking and avoid the frustration of wasting time cooking with unsuccessful results

Since the platform is supposed to be a marketplace, the chefs themselves influence their profits by creating content. The cost of the master class from the chef ($ 1) is a gratitude from users for the time, effort and costs, which belongs personally to the creator of the master class

Do you support this idea?
