Russian cosmism was a philosophical and cultural movement that emerged in Russia in the early 20th century.

Russian cosmism was a philosophical and cultural movement that emerged in Russia in the early 20th century.

It entailed a broad theory of natural philosophy, combining elements of religion and ethics with a history and philosophy of the origin, evolution and future existence of the cosmos and humankind. It combined elements from both Eastern and Western philosophic traditions as well as from the Russian Orthodox Church.

It may also be known as "Biocosmism-Immortalism" or "Biokosmism".

Thus, in (Svetlana) Semenova’s definition, Cosmism not only shifts our perspective from an earth-centered to a cosmos-centered view, not shifts our self-image from earth dweller to cosmic citizen, but emphasizes that present humanity is not the end point of evolution, that in addition to its long past the evolutionary process also has a long future, and that humanity is now is a position to direct and shape its own future evolution. [...]

According to the literary manifesto of the avant-garde biocosmists of the 1920s, "Biocosmism has three important tasks:"

  • The realization of space flight,
  • The realization of personal immortality, and
  • The resurrection of the dead

Many ideas of the Russian cosmists were later developed by those in the modern transhumanist movement.

All the Cosmists have followed Fedorov’s teaching that knowledge must be active, whether spiritual or scientific. All have subscribed to a sense of wholeness, a view that man and the cosmos are interrelated, that the individual and the community complete fulfill each other, that life is in one or another present throughout the cosmos, that whether called God or aether or some other term, a supreme source and support of life and energy is present throughout the cosmos, that we and our planet are not alone.

Biocosmism and Vpereds

Hello all, just wanted to see if anyone knew the relation (if any) between the biocosmists and Vpereds/Left Bolsheviks (such as Alexander Bogdanov or Anatoly Lunacharsky)?

Dyson spheres

Do you think the Dyson sphere is something that could be done by humanity? I feel like we could but I was discussing this with a friend last night and whe did a bunch of calculations about the possibility of getting the materias for it from mercury, but it just seems impossible, the quantity of materials is so big that, I don’t think it is a possible project. But that could be done in a very long time

Does anybody have an english copy of Poem of Anabiosis By Alexander Iaroslavskii?

I suppose a Cyrillic copy would work as well...

It was mentioned in this article but I can't find the text anywhere online...

Contemporary writings that develop on the ideas of Fedorov and the other Russian cosmists?

I'm reading George Young's book and find it utterly fascinating. I plan to read the writings of Fedorov and others, but I was also wondering who is writing on these ideas today. Any suggested reading or discussion groups?

Is there such a thing as "Eco-Accelerationism"?

I'm a big fan of Accelerationist philosophy and Biocosmist aims, but I also have deep environmental concerns. I believe Accelerationism gives us a 'way out' of the capitalist system by diving deeper into its contradictions and uprooting them at the source, so to speak. However, given the rampant over-consumption, planned obsolescence, and bloated workforce necessary to sustain capitalism, I am concerned about the effects this might have on our planet's integrity and how long healthy and happy human life might be possible in an accelerated capitalist political economy. Does Accelerationism/ Biocosmism provide a solution to this?
