AskPCGamers - Even the "dumb" of questions deserve a serious answer! We're all human, and nobody should expect everyone to know everything about everything. If you've ever been curious about something related to PC gaming that everyone just appears to fully understand except for you, this is the subreddit for you. What's a good starting point for my kid? What is 4K? What's FPS? What's an IPS display? What is USB 3.0? What is PCI Express x16? Why does everyone hate VGA? Who is Gaben? Ask here!

Even the dumbest of questions deserve a serious answer! If you've ever been curious about something related to PC gaming that everyone just appears to fully understand except for you, this is the subreddit for you. What is 4K? What's the difference between Intel and AMD? What's an IPS display? Do motherboards have an impact on gaming performance? What is PCI Express x16? Why does everyone hate VGA? Stay tuned to find out!

Rules

  1. Make your post title a full question. The title of your post should always be in the form of a question unless it's a meta or informational post. You'll get the best response if the title contains a question. Submitting something with a lazy title hurts its chances of being archived even if it receives an awesome answer!

  2. This is not /r/TechSupport or /r/BuildAPC. Specific pieces of hardware comparisons (this GPU or that GPU), build assistance(where do I plug this in, is this build OK), or other tech support questions will be removed. There's a tiny bit of leniency here, though.

  3. No false gold promises. If you promise gold to the best answer, you better follow through. Unless, of course, answer turnout is unexpectedly small.

  4. Be serious. You're free to include humor, but people who ask questions are looking for answers.

  5. Explain your reasoning. Opinion and fact are both very much welcomed, but you must explain why. Simply saying "Because EVGA sucks." or "Because DVI is better." is not a good answer.

Guidelines

  1. Try not to post extremely specific or vague questions. Find the perfect balance between un-exciting stubs and title essays.

  2. Please... if there is an answer your receive that you really liked, reply with a thanks and a mention of it being the best answer. The answerer may be eligible for a reward flair.

HELP! RANDOM PERFORMANCE ISSUE!

All of a sudden my warzone is running at 30-50 fps. Yesterday and all the other times ive played it been fine at 90+ fps. No matter what I do, I can not seem to increase my fps. I also seemed to have dropped fps on other games! The only thing I can think of that mightve cause some trouble is that yesterday before turning off my MSI Pulse GL66 laptop, i installed the latest Nvidia driver. Could updating drivers be a reason why my performance has been so low?

PLS help, I wanted to relax and game, I just got more stress from this random poor performance!

Weird ping problem while playing Rocket League

So basically I have a normal ping (22ms) when I test it in cmd, even in rocket league it was normal at first but all of a sudden it turned to 66ms in rocket league. After 1 hour and a game restart even to 170ms. Even then when I test it while I am ingame it’s 22ms in cmd when pinging websites meanwhile ingame varies very hard to my tests. Can somebody help me, it’s frustrating because it seems just so random.

I'm looking for a desktop monitor that is large but can also be easily folded away. Any suggestions?

I'm keen to have a decent screen but don't want it to be blocking out my window when not in use. I can't seem to find anything like that.

Problem… my comp refuses to run as good as my friends, despite it being about the middle in power amongst them.

I have an i7 11700F, with 32g of 3000 ddr4, a 3070, and a couple ssds and hdds. Ive had it for three years, and I play at 2k.

My friends have anywhere from some old amd cpu with a 570? gpu, one with an 10th gen i7 paired with a 3060, and other friends with i9s and 3080s and 4090s.

You’d think my performance would be right in the middle, considering my specs but that isn’t the case.

On almost any game we play I have the worst performance.

Most recently it just barely runs Ark ascended, my average fps 27… And that’s on 1080, 2k, high or mid, with and without dlss. FPS doesn’t change. At 4k it runs worse.

Runs star citizen at about that same fps.

I struggle to get 60 even on games like destiny.

I don’t know what to do, I don’t know if my major bottleneck is cpu or gpu based.

I don’t have a problem with cooling.

I’ve ran every kind of “gamer” software I can find from razer stuff, msi stuff, the asus stuff that’s built in.

I can finally afford a decent gaming computer, but my partner wants it to look grown up. What should I choose?

It could be slick looking or just discreet. We've moved to a new house, which we're decorating, so it would need to look pretty if I'm going to get it in the living room.

I know 'grown up' is subjective. I guess I mean not too much flash or RGB.

I cannot control my RGB case fans from pc

I just bought the TUF gaming TF 120 case fans with RGB lights. They are Asus and my motherboard is a GIGABYTE B550 GAMING X V2. I tried to access them through RGBfusion 2.0 and through the Asus application yet i cant seem to have them work. I can only change their mode through the control hub that they came with. Should i get a different hub or thats not the case here ?

My gpu is underperforming and I dont know why.

My dad bought me my first ever laptop about a year back-it's a dell G15 5510 with 16gb ram,Intel 15 10200H@4.2GHz and a GTX 1650-anyway I started just playing war thunder every now and then and Farcry6 because my friend gifted it to me any way when I started I was getting around 120-140 fps in war thunder and I was more than happy. But I started to get curious since this was my first laptop and I wanted to try all the new things I overclocked my laptop gpu(it didnt have a warranty)and I was well aware of the dangers especially when doing it with laptops so I took my time and made sure nothing was overheating I didnt experience any crashes of sort and later I just put it back to its default clock but then it all went down my gpu performance is horrible and I dont know why now I get like 60fps in war thunder I made sure that I was indeed using my dedicated gpu and nothing seems off I know that it isnt thermal throttling as its normally at about 42 degrees centigrade when I game.I know it's quite a hard problem I am dumbfounded and I dont know what to do, I just want my old performance back I wandered if it didnt have to do with the overclocking but im not sure any help will be much appreciated.-thanks in advance

edit:sorry if my English is bad it's not my mother tongue.

my PC sometimes gets stuck on the VGA led

Context: It's been almost 2 months since I made my first build, in this time it never gave any failure, but recently when I turn it on sometimes it gets stuck on the vga LED, I changed the connection to my monitor from Displayport to HDMI and it solved it a bit couple of days, but it is giving those errors again, curiously and probably a bad way to fix it is by turning it off and turning it on again, what I'm afraid of is that the problem comes from the graphics card, but it has never given any failure, I hope Can someone answer me, and thanks in advance

How to make PC more mechanical/responsive

Ehat do I mean by mechanical/responsive? Well, things that make it more like mechanical thing. My pc is already much more of that than avridge PC.

Examples (that I have and use): -physical power button that clicks -buzzer that makes sound when turning on PC -physical switch on microphone to turn it on/off -disconnecting cam from usb extrntion when not in use -mechanical keyboard (or something this type*) -mans spinning accordingly to load and stuff -sound of the CD spinning to life when readong data from it (even tho not used so often) -HDD hard drive (I don't use it because of the speed)

*-I'm not suer if my keyboard is mrchanical but it has some depth to it and makes quiet but heard sound (Genesis Rhod 420)

This all might be because I'm really into stuff like cars (especially manuals) and I like it when something mechanical/electronical is communicating with me with healthy sounds so I know just from it what is the condition of the thing. Also I don't like when something is excessively loud, for example some REALLY high rpm fans. Even using fans as a example, when one of my fan's berring worn out, I knew it quite quickly.

Is there a law that protects or helps me get back access to a game I purchased digitally?

I purchased Minecraft a while back. I still have the receipt I got through Paypal.

My problem is that recently mojang accounts were forced to migrate to Microsoft accounts. I did it back in May 13th, well before the migration phase ended. I logged into the game using the microsoft account (I did not have a microsoft account before this) just to make sure everything is in order. I played a bit then took a break. This week I tried logging back to the game but it tells me I need to buy the game and it doesn't look like I have the game registered.

I tried reaching out to microsoft and mojang for support but they are not helping. Their excuse is that I "missed" the migration window even though I have shown them emails I saved proving that I've done that.

I feel like there should be some law or something that I can do about it but I'm not knowledgeable about this.

Should I become a PC gamer? Advice needed

I built my own pc a few months ago, but I only use it for personal use since I have a console. I could become both Pc and Console gamer, but how do you know what games u want to play on which system. What inspired you all to become PC gamers?

Side note: since I know I wasn’t going to be gaming as much my pc build only has a built in gpu for now.

Checking if components are 100% working

About a month ago my PSU blow up and thought that my whole build was bricked. Had an idea and bought a new PSU to see if any of the other components were salvagable and the pc booted up as normal and is currently working fine but I have some concerns as to if any of the components have even slight damage. How do I chrck to see if there is minimal is at all damage to the parts? I am currently not playing any games in fear of damaging something even more

I have concerns about my gaming laptop and it's broken fan.

The right fan of my HP Pavilion Gaming laptop recently just kind of gave up and won't even spin anymore. Do you think I could play simple games without having to worry about my gpu dying? Or should I just wait until I can repair the fan? (Although, I would rather just get a full desktop pc, but I can't at the moment)

I have 3 screens with different color rendering and I don't know how to correct it.

Hello, I'm not English, I risk making mistakes but as said in the title, I have three screens with my configuration and the three have different color rendering and I do not understand why...
I have two PC monitors ( ASUS TUF Gaming VG27AQ1A ) in HDR, one of which is lighter with a pinker rendering, the other is darker with a more green/blue rendering and a Samsung smartTV ( TV SAMSUNG UE40F6320 ) which is very dark.
All this is connected to my graphics card ( AMD Radeon RX 6700 XT ) and I've tried swapping the screen connectors ( by plugging monitor two in the slot of monitor 1 and vice versa ) but the screen on the left always comes out pink and the one on the right comes out blue/green.
Is this a problem with my graphics card? Knowing that when I activate the HDR mode I can't change the settings of the asus monitors ( with the buttons behind the monitors ).
Strangely when I use the option to duplicate the screens or to clone the screen, they adopt the same tint and luminosity whereas if I do an extended display, the rendering is different for each screen.

Considering selling Desktop to move over to laptop. Will I notice performance drops? Am I overlooking something?

So I recently had a kid and, overall, am pretty much limited in Desktop time. I still game a lot, but on my low-end laptop. This got me wondering two things:

- my desktop (overall: Ryzen 9 5900x + RX 6700xt + 32GB RAM) is barely used, and being DDR4, I imagine it will only start to see its value decrease over time
- I am using a laptop to game a lot, but limited to older games/streaming over Steam link from the desktop to the laptop.
So, in summary: why not sell both and get a decent gaming laptop? Around me (Portugal/Spain/Europe) I see deals that would probably either not require investment from my side, or make me some profit.
Examples of configs I've seen:
- ASUS ROG Strix G16: Intel Core i7-13650HX/32GB/1TB SSD/RTX 4070/16" [~1600€]
- ASUS TUF Gaming A15 2023: Ryzen 9 7940HS/32GB/512GB SSD/RTX 4070/15.6" [~1300€]
I mainly play single-player games for now, and some WoW here and there. I also stream (when the kid allows which hasn't happened but I should be back at it soon). I want to do some gaming recording as well. These laptops seem to be on pair with my desktop, except maybe for the CPU. But would I notice a lower performance? I don't think so but wanted to ask you if I'm overlooking anything.
Thank you so much!

Will an old computer that (such as pentium 4 old) slow down internet speed throughout the house?

My grandma has an p4 computer running on half our bandwidth (250mb) and my computer and our consoles are constantly getting disconnected from the internet, could this be the culprit?

Best deal between these two PC for gaming?

Im looking for a PC for gaming (on 4k monitor and vr). I want to save money and relatively silent.

The first model I can get a deal :

One that was originally from Amazon (and got good review there) and is like a new: Skytech Eclipse Gaming PC Desktop with Intel Core i7 13700K 3.4 GHz, NVIDIA RTX 4080, 1TB NVME Gen4 SSD, 32GB DDR5 RAM RGB, 1000W Gold PCIE 5.0 PSU, 420mm AIO, 11AC Wi-Fi, Windows 11 Home 64-bit I can get it for 3300 CAN$ instead of the 3550$CAN from Amazon.

and this one:

TITAN – Core i7, 12Cores 20Threads 5GHz max, Méga Cooler, Z690, 32GB DDR5, SSD 1000GB, RTX 4080 16GB, Windows 11 for 3200 CAN$ instead of 3500$

I can upgrade the Titan with WIFI 6 dual band 2.4/5GHz + Bluetooth+ 39.00$CAN and upgrade @ CPU Watercooling 240mm+ 89.00$

I know I can find more powerful PC but I want a good PC below 3500 CAN$ especially with the terrible taxes in Canada.

Black square appearing on monitor and don’t know why or how to fix

Yesterday i noticed on my display a black square, i could see through it still but it came out of nowhere. I tried resetting and turning off my pc for the night (no luck). Today I googled and was told maybe I just needed the new graphics card driver and so I checked and there was a new one. After the install it seemingly fixed my issue but after about 20 minutes the black square returned and I don’t have the slightest clue how to fix it.

Why do you see so many I5 and R5 builds with even 40 series cards?

I know I5 and Ryzen 5 cards have been improved upon a lot, but why are so many builds using them? I've seen a few 40 series builds with said CPUs in them. If you are going 40 series wouldn't you want at least a Ryzen 7 or I7 CPU?

How does lowering the "APU sPPT" not seem to affect performance at all?

I have an ASUS gaming laptop that ran too hot for my comfort out of the box, so I adjusted some recommended settings and now it runs cool with no noticeable decrease in performance. The primary settings I adjusted were APU sPPT and Platform sPPT. From my little understanding, they are basically the amount of power that can be delivered to the CPU/GPU, but I don't understand how they run incredibly hot on full power and decreasing those values gives the same performance with much less heat produced. Thanks in advance
