So we an Intel 286 processor (and thought we were hot stuff at the time)...and my dad (who was more comp smart that I was at the time...but don't worry, this story is my origin story.. lol) decided to install a Plus Hardcard..in an effort to "boost our storage".
He did so, and it seemed to work just fine for a while.....that is, until I decided to install a game behind his back.
He had a strict "DO NOT TOUCH THIS UNLESS I'M HERE" rule that I felt was just a suggestion...and I slid my 5-1/4 floppy of "Bad Dudes" in and installed it...not realizing that when I did so, it over wrote the autoexec.bat and config.sys at the same time...soo..every time you turned the PC on, the game came up.
For whatever reason, it also wrote-protected the hard card. My dad was FURIOUS...but I sat back and watched him try all sorts of things....to no avail.
Thinking the PC was bricked, he went to bed, and I stayed up...it was then I learned a lot about MS-DOS commands, and realized how I could disable the write protect feature on the card via the prompts.....
NGL..I was SWEATING....though I knew he was going to delete / format everything otherwise, so why not?
Eventually I was able to reverse the write protect, allowing him to delete the game from the system. I think I finally told him a few years ago about that.. lol
Who remembers the "Computer Convention" shows? My favorites on the East Coast was the Trenton State Computer Fair"...
Hundreds of vendors would show up....and if you knew well enough, you'd know the legit (pro) vendors were indoors... Outside you'd find so many tents put up, with vendors like "NY State Computers"..and every one of their sales people were foreign of some kind (and I dont say this to be poking fun...but ) they'd have the heaviest accent, yet a nametag that read "John" or "Doug".. LOL
Anyways..I remember buying a MB with a Cyrix-686 chip..and this NY Computers dude named "Phil" installed it, and broke some pins bc he tried to force it (not looking at the install arrow on the chip). They REFUSED to give me a refund saying it was MY fault, (when I had a receipt that proved I paid for installation). It took me actually standing outside the tent, YELLING that they were a ripoff, showing the receipt before they fixed it... LOL
I have so many more stories though...they were so fun
Does anybody know how to activate a 1990 Motorola advisor in 2024. It’s been my favorite pager for years and I’ve never known how to make it function today. It has to be this one because it’s swag. Thanks to anyone with input. Send to anyone who might know as well thank you so very much
It's just stuck on the no file screen The power button is broken so if I have to turn it on and off I need another solution
Something got me thinking about the old email chains that said "Send this email to 5 people or you'll you'll die in seven days." Anyone have screenshots or links where I could find them?
Hello peoples of Reddit,
I have spent more than 6 hours in the wee morning trying to remember the name of a 90s - early 2000s art studio computer program I used to play, but for the life of me, I cannot find it or anything that looks like it online and I know I’m not crazy because there were specific random details I remember about it.
Some of these details were:
The layout was similar to Microsoft’s fine art but it looked better with a light cream desk background and it also had a tiny door to exit.
I remember one of the tools (at the top of the screen ) being 2 purple monsters/ gremlins that had red/ orange tuffs of hair that changed the size of things. The big one would make an ‘UGH’ sound and the smaller monster next to it would make an ‘OOF’ sound.
When you exited the desk area you would be on the screen of a literal interactive desk
The place where you saved your projects had a cork background.
I spent a lot of time on it as a kid so I’m hoping it’s not some kind of fever dream I’m having.
It was NOT Microsoft creative writer, Microsoft fine art, paint it!, hallmark creative workshop, crayola or kid pix.
I don’t think Microsoft created it but I’m pretty sure it ran on windows98 and xp.
If you could help that would be awesome because this keeps me up at night. Screenshots of you have any would be fantastic too!
I bought an old Sony Vaio laptop (Sony Notebook pcg 9316) to play some old video games and I also want to start learning how to code. I put a windows xp system operator on it and I want to put a linux one too, I need 2 partitions for it and this laptop only has one 24gb hard drive, and not a Sata one, instead it uses the old Pata ones, so good luck to me trying to find a Pata hard here in Romania. My question is, can I use a usb stick to put my Linux sys operator on it, and when I want to use it, I can just put the usb in my laptop and boot it? Or do I really need a Pata hard-drive?
