I'm a wand smith and I'm trying to look for fig for a wand but I've looked everywhere and can't find any fig for sale. so I'm just trying to find somewhere with saficent fig wood for sale. So if anyone has any suggestions on any listingd or something I would be greatly appreciated!

On behalf of r/Wandsmith and by the suggestion and encouragement of /u/americanaluminium I'm here to post a thread where wand sized blanks can be bought, sold and traded.

In particular, the intention is to allow rare, obscure types of wood, such as Blackthorn, Laurel, Hornbeam, Pear etc. to be more available to us Wandmakers who crave them. These woods aren't commercially sold, and can be very difficult to get your hands on if you live far from their natural habitat.

#What does a Wand blank look like?

Turning blanks: Most wands will be in the range of between nine and sixteen inches long. A lot of Wandmakers turn their wands on a lathe, and it's always helpful to have at least an extra two inches to the length of the wand you're aiming for (inch on either side of a turning blank). Say you're making a fourteen inch wand, the easiest way for me to do it is to use a 16 inch blank. This allows me to make some mistakes as I turn and gives me some leeway. The optimal dimensions of a Wand turning blank are 1 1/2'' × 1 1/2'' × 16''. But thicker or thinner blanks can be used as well. Of course the thicker the blank the easier it will be to turn.

Carving blanks: Other Wandmakers carve their wands with knives and chisels, carved wands are more forgiving in the types of wood they come from. Where Turning blanks have to be straight and thick, carving blanks can be almost any shape or size.

So go forth. Buy, trade, sell and discuss!

I have 2 black walnut trees that hang over my house. They are pretty large (2-3 feet thick) and have about 20-30 feet of almost perfectly straight trunks. I want them gone off my property as they hang over my house and make a huge mess all year. they look fairly healthy but I know nothing about trees. Cutting them down would not be extremely difficult as my neighbor has ok'd using his lawn to drop them (they are probably his actually) and there is plenty of space. is there a market for people to come take down a tree (for free or cheep) so they can have some decent wood like this?

Anyone know anyone interested in buying slabs of California Redwood? Old growth stumps and such. They work well for those epoxy river tables.

I've got a good chunk of stuff that was part of a larger lot of wood that I got in a group sale, and I don't really need these pieces since I don't have anywhere to really store them, and I don't have any projects to really use 'em. All of it is kiln dried, almost all of it is milled, not rough cut. Various dimensions from 1x1 to 2x8 or larger, lengths anywhere from 6 inches to 4 feet in length. Looking to sell the whole bunch for $400. I'd estimate there to be at least 50 board feet of wood here

Hi all, I'm searching chiefly for a piece of Elm native to Britain (or even Europe). It’s for a special project (magic wand) that would suit a piece of European Elm better than stock I could likely find in North America.

So firstly I'm after Elm turning stock in 1”-2” X 13”-15” dimensions. I understand Elm is a rarer timber to find these days, but there’s no shame in asking.

I’m also curious to know if anyone has access to this list of wood native to Britain and Ireland and Europe:

What's the reasoning for this? Banned users can still view subreddits and PM people. It's just how reddit works. So we can ban as many scammers as we want, but they can still PM you and you would be none the wiser that they have been banned. A simple, "PMed" in the comments is all it takes to dispel any worry.

You should therefore always require a comment in your Public Trade Thread before swapping with ANYONE. It doesn't matter how much rep they have, how old their account is, or how much karma they have. No comment in your Public Trade Thread -- NO DEALS.

We'd rather see deals take place out in the open in comments, as it helps in transparency.

######- How old is their account? -

While new users more often than not are trustworthy (I make deals with new users all the time), you should still exercise caution when making deals, and check for the following: Do they have Flair, Completed Trades, or Reputation Elsewhere?

######- Does the seller actually have what they say they do? -

• Sellers may use fake/stolen images of items they don't actually have. Make sure what they're selling you is something they actually possess. It's a great idea to always ask for pictures. If necessary ask for timestamps! This is very important. If the seller includes the item and their username with a date, everything should be good to go in this regard.

• Tineye or Google reverse image search their pictures. This is not as foolproof as timestamps, but you can look their pictures up that way if you yet have any doubts.

######- Paypal Gift (Friends/Family) Vs. Goods & Services-

If you pay someone via PayPal, understand the risks and differences between the two types of payments.

There is a 3% fee for payments sent as goods/services but it allows you to initiate a claim if there is a problem. If you send payment as a gift (F&F), you CANNOT initiate a claim to dispute the charges. As a buyer spending an extra 3% for your item shouldn't add too much more to the cost of your item. As a seller you could just build that cost into the price of your item. Under no circumstances should you send payment as friends/family, nor as a seller should you only ask for friends/family.

There may be additional consequences from PayPal if they find out you're dealing with F&F payments when in reality dealing with goods and services. It's very rare, but you do not want this to happen to you. I've heard some horror stories about people getting screwed by asking for F&F payments.

Additionally, if a seller sends the buyer an invoice, Paypal's fee to the seller doesn't apply to shipping costs. It's minor but still worth noting. Always do goods and services even if you've dealt with someone before! You never know when things can go wrong and you want that protection.

######- Use tracking and Expect tracking -

Just because someone gives you a tracking number, doesn’t mean that the item has been shipped since you can generate a tracking number online without sending anything. If you’re expecting the other party to go first, make sure the package is updated on the USPS website as "package received" and NOT just "shipping information received". Scammers may generate a tracking number for you but never actually ship the item.

######- The Victims Plea -

“Oh, I’ve been scammed before, so I’m not comfortable sending first” or "I need money quickly to buy _________ (fill in the blank)". While this may be true for some people, that's not your problem. If you are inclined to believe them - ask for proof of the scam. When did it happen? How? What was it for? Do they have any confirmed trades? Did they report it? Did they post on our Karma Thread?

#- Common Courtesy Reminders -

Reply to all offers and be polite in doing so. There are enough unpleasant characters on reddit and we simply don't allow them here. We want our community to have fun and enjoy exchanging wood stock without worrying about aggressive attitudes. It takes less than 5 seconds to reply “no thanks” if you’re not interested in someone’s offer.

I have a beautiful large Sycamore tree way too close to my house, and I'm having it taken down. The base of the trunk is between 3' & 4' in diameter (the pile you see is of the larger high-up branches, not the trunk). I have a local source that will slice, plane & kiln dry for me. I'm going to use some myself, but plan to sell most of it.

I'm obviously open to buyers here. But, mostly curious how to find market prices for these sorts of things. I know it depends on quality of the wood, which is yet to be determined until the trunk comes down. I don't want to get screwed. But also don't want to just hoard tons of wood in my garage.

Also, what is the most desirable thickness of board? And what is a good price for the slicing, planing & drying services?

Hey guys, sorry if this is the wrong sub to go to but I'm looking to buy a ~48"x24"x1" butcher block to make a table. I would normally just opt for taking a stab at making it myself but I'm currently living in an apartment in NYC so unfortunately don't have much ability to do anything of the sort. I'm looking to make it out of a darker/warmer wood like Mahogany or Walnut but having trouble actually finding a nice amount of sources to compare. Most places I find online have butcher cutting boards, but not large pieces for tables. I found this from home depot but a little wary about the quality of the piece. I found Hardwood Lumber Company's stuff online but not a whole lot else out there besides Etsy which I've found in the past to be a bit pricey. Being in NYC poses its issues for finding a brick and mortar to buy this from, so I'd probably be limited to online.

Do any of you guys have any other sources online I could check out for this? I'd ideally like to get this table together asap to finally get the apartment together. Appreciate your time!

Hey guys! I have a decent pile of sycamore wood that I've been turning into blanks that would be good for pens or similar. I've cut them into 8" lengths and they're between 3/4 and 1 inch thick. Here's a picture of one lot and an attempted closeup of a blank:

Most of these have a pretty cool pattern to them, although some have it more strongly than others.
I'm asking $20 $14 per 13. Price includes shipping to anywhere in continental USA. If anybody would like a different dimension of blank, let me know and we'll try to work something out. Hello, I have been trying to find 4x4s of maple or cherry lumber for a shelf I am building, but I cannot seem to find any anywhere. Does this wood not exist?

Here I have quite a large amount of southern wax myrtle (Myrica cerifera) branches and log sections. I'm in the process of milling up the larger logs into turning blanks but I have a large quantity of smaller pieces that make excellent blanks for carving spoons. I have more than I can use before they dry out and its such a nice carving wood I don't want them to go to waste. Wax myrtle is usually only a shrub so big stuff like this is uncommon.

Wax myrtle is a lovely carving wood while still green, though it is a touch hard when dry. Its got a similar feel when carving to sugar maple, its dense fine grained and cuts smoothly. Its probably a little harder than sugar maple. The wood has a faint pink orange hue when freshly cut but upon UV exposure the wood turns a medium orange tan. Occasionally it seems to have dark brown streaks but they aren't consistent. The grain tends to corkscrew a bit and the bark is hard to read so I would recommend sawing the wood rather than splitting it to make your spoon blanks. This wood seems to be quite stable and not prone to checking during seasoning.

First come first serve but I think there is plenty to go around. The ends will be coated in anchorseal to keep the wood as green as possible.
