Hello I'm located in New York, zone 7A.
There is a small woodlot behind the house that is a buffer between myself and the noise and sight of an elementary school playground.
I've been trying to get rid of invasive species in the lot and establish a conifer component to give some much needed privacy.
I have white pines doing ok, but with the towering oaks, the light is filtered much of the day with maybe 3-4 hours of direct sunlight. Still enough to grow evergreens.
I wanted to know if there is any way to accelerate the growth rate of American hollies, and also can you suggest other conifers that would grow in the woodlot.
There is quite a fair amount of light, as I've mentioned, not direct sun, but filtered mostly with maybe 3-4 hours of direct.
Thanks for the help. I hope this is the correct forum.
Posted elsewhere but not able to get much advice. My Monkey Puzzle has slowly been turning brown over the course of a year, with it being a bit faster in the last 3ish months. I am based in South Australia and we are currently in summer. I am unsure if its due to the heat, too much Australian sun, overwatering or even underwatering. I have a Juniper I treat the exact same and its had zero issues and is doing quite well.
Discovered this gorgeous cultivar the other day. Soft, feathery, fragrant and a beautiful deep green. Going to make an awesome backdrop for my Japanese-style garden.
Hello! Can someone identify what this is? I’ve been growing it for two years indoors (slowly trying to introduce it outdoors) and I’m trying to save it! I’m really hoping it’s not dead 😭
Planted in a yard so I didn’t get any closer.
I have a trautman juniper. It's young so that may be a part of the issue, but it's still old enough to make my skin feel on fire. The rabbits stripped the bottom inches of it. Is it common for rabbits to eat juniper?
Never seen this before. Just fungus?
Attached are before and after photos of my Monkey puzzle, a little over a year apart. On one hand I have more browning un the time between, with the lower most branch preparing to drop, on the other I have seen a huge boom of new growth, with the newer lower branch almost reaching the rim of the pot, lots of little new ones and the top has swollen in size.
Should I be concerned about this browning compared to new growth, especially as we go into the hot Australian summer, or should I be alright for now?
Sorry i don't have any close up pictures. In south east Queensland.
I am wanting some smaller landscape trees for my yard. We have a million Virginia pines in the woods around the house but I’d absolutely love a “Christmas” type tree. Columnar or pyramidal that stays under 20’x8’. My favorite look is that of Korean fir, Serbian spruce, Norway spruce. Any ideas?
Found this guy growing in a crack. Not sure what it is but I might put it in a pot. I'd just like to have some idea what I might be adopting. It's about 3-4 inches. Thanks
Struggling to get a solid ID with this. I wish I could remember more about the tree. Found in a park in the UK..
Cryptomeria japonica is my favorite non-native species of tree! I've planted many varieties over the years. I've just moved into a new place that came with no trees and I've already put in a Cryptomeria 'Sekkan' in the front. On the opposite side of the property' there is room for another large tree in the corner, and I was looking to do Cryptomeria 'Yakushima Blue' (next to a Japanese Umbrella Pine). I live in South Carolina. Are there any mail order nurseries/ universities/ greenhouses I should ask?
