She lives!

Finally figured out some wiring issues and got her back together and running. She's not quite finished, but definitely motivated to get it all buttoned up 😎

Virago 250 exhaust clamp replacement?

So have an old virago with the 2-1 exhaust so there's supposed to be a clamp on the bottom section to split the exhaust so you can remove it but previous owner welded it up. Was planning on cutting it and putting on a camp instead but can't seem to find a suitable clamp, any ideas? Thanks

Cylinder head bolts and nuts torque specs?

Hey guys, I'm trying to rebuild a 1986 Honda shadow vt700 and I'm curious if anybody knows what the torque specs on the cylinder head bolts and nuts are?

I've already sheared a 10mm side bolt just testing it to what the 1 readable manual I found online says, and now I'm a bit timid to torque the rest up cause I really don't want to take the whole cover off again to remove any broken bolt pieces. Any help would be appreciated.

VIN Lookup

Hey I just purchased 2 vintage motorcycles from an auction and wanted to lookup the VIN numbers. Wondering if there is a preferred site or app to use for this?

Frame question

I just have a general question about the importance of the horizontal bar in the picture. It seems to me like it adds rigidity to the frame, so would something like removing or denting it critically weaken the overall structure? I just need a small amount of clearance, and I'm avoiding removing it as much as possible, so putting a small dent in the bottom of it seems like the next best option.

YZ250 clutch assembly issue

1995 YZ250 Put the clutch in and had all this play. Springs aren't torqued completely but close. Stopped when I noticed the play there. I have the correct amount of plates. And everything else is in order as well. Took it back apart to check. The original push rod had a lot of wear so there is a new one installed in the video. I also didn't remember seeing the little bb when taking apart so got one of those out back in too. Before putting the cover and springs on everything looks all flush and lined up. I took the new push rod out and tried the old one. It is a few MM shorter because of the wear so when that is in I don't have play like in the video but it doesn't feel like it engages right when I move the actuator arm. Idk what's wrong here? Should I go with the new rod but no BB? Any advice? Thank you.

New build

I got an '85 Virago 700 I'm trying to turn into a rat bike. I'm really excited, since this is my first project bike, I just wanted to ask if I should worry about breaking the things that make it street legal (like turn signal wires). This will obviously take a while, so im not riding it anytime soon. I'm just trying to rip out the motor at the moment. But the wiring harness is a big pain.

Suzuki gn125cc revs disproportionate to speed / very low top speed

So I have a 1991 suzuki gn125 that has been rebuilt. On its test ride today its only going 30mph at 9k revs in 4th gear. Obviously this gives an assumed top speed of approximately 40mph which is 20mph less than posted and 15mph less than acceptable. Things I know it is not.. Carburettor is very clean Air filter is new Spark plug is new Ignition coil/regulator/stator are both new and has a beautiful blue spark. It accelerates nicely although the revs are high Idle is slightly high at 2k revs. Starts first press of the button. This is not a new problem and this issue was there with a different engine in?? I'm completely stumped. Please help

Carb issues?

I have a 1965 Bridgestone bs90 and it has a brand new carb, and all of the cables are attached and such, it idles and revs all perfect 100% how it should, but after a few minutes of either riding or idling, it'll flood out. What's happening here?

Engine revs up in idle

Hi, a new problem started appearing on my 1990 Suzuki GN250. Sometimes but not always the engine revs up to >3000 RPMs in idle. What I realized is, that I briefly pull out the choke and push it back in quickly, before the engine stalls, the RPMs settle at around 1500, where I normally expect them. Following my first idea, I checked for air leaks around the intake manifold and cylinder head, unsuccessfully. I will probably just take apart the carburetor and clean it, but can anyone already give me a hint on what to look out for? I‘ve never worked on a membrane carb, can a worn out membrane cause such behavior? Thank you!

My sudden, intermittent short circuit:

I have no idea where it was in the bike. It started acting possessed about four days ago and I bought a multimeter to diagnose it today. Sometimes when I'd turn the key everything would turn on, but sometimes I'd get no lights, not even a click from the starter solenoid; nothing. Once it ran for a second then stopped and everything died. I was testing near the horn wires and then this just fell from the void.

XJ600 Diversion help for a beginner

Hi all,

I'm looking for a project motorcycle (going to be my first, after having done an engine revision on my KTM Duke 125), and I have taken quite a liking to the Yamaha XJ600 Diversion. I have found 2 models; 1 non-running for 325 euros, and 1 running for 450 euros, both with ~60k km on the odometer.

I'm going to take a look at both in person, but I have a gut feeling I'll be going for the running one. What are things I need to take into consideration that I haven't thought about before? So far, I think I need to do the following:

  • Rebuild carbs
  • Check and adjust valves
  • Check tank for rust (and "derust" if necessary)
  • Rebuild brakes
  • Check (and maybe replace) wheel bearings and steering head bearings
  • Replace all fluids and filters (but that's a given)
  • Replace tires depending on wear and age (but that's a given), and the same goes for the chain and sprockets

Have I missed anything?

And what are things I need to look out for when buying a project bike, and especially a Divvy?

Thanks in advance! :)

Worth it?

I’ve been riding for a couple months now and in my free time I’ve been thinking about starting my first project bike. I’ve got my eyes on a 1986 shadow 750cc, the bike has a lot of modifications to it including a bobber set, new exhaust, battery. The asking price is 1,300 but it won’t run properly, the choke is broken and has to be pulled in order to start the bike and still then it won’t run for long. After it heats up it’ll turn over but as soon as you put some throttle it cuts out, the bike has been sitting for a while so the carbs need to be cleaned and gas replaced. I was just wondering if this would be a good start project bike. Any and all suggestions are appreciated.
