Sporting II - Jack Kortkamp & Ian James

Curious what everyone thinks the coaching shakeup will do to the development of James/Kortkamp?
Feels like next year there's pretty high expectations for them to take big steps ahead.

Moment of Silence

Just a moment of silence for the 10 fans (myself included) whose favorite chant was “Timmy Timmy Timmy Tim Melia. He saves our goal. He saves our gooooaaallll.” 😔

New Theme/Jersey 2025 Theme?

So today in the announcement that Sporting made they did not release it in the 2024 Argyle theme like normal, they released it in some medieval theme. Wondering if this could be the theme for the 2025 home jerseys? If so that would be a cool transition from the hoops.

Benny Feilhaber out as SKC II coach

Buried in the 2025 roster announcement
Benny Feilhaber will not return as Sporting KC II’s head coach in 2025 and the team has begun the search for its next head coach.

Ultras

I think it would be the most amazing and cool thing our fanbase could do. We could designate one game of the year, like the home opener, and bring flares to the Cauldron! (Blue flares, obviously.) I have no idea what the consequences could be, but I can imagine that if we had the right knowledge and expertise from someone, we could pull off something like this. I would obviously want to do something like this as safely as possible, but I doubt we’ll ever be able to. However, it would be the best thing ever. Does anyone think this could ever happen, and if so, who is willing and interested in making it happen?

GoFundMe for Mechak Jerome, former Sporting KC defender

Hi all,

Union Omaha player and former SKC player Mechak Jerome is currently in the ICU along with his wife following an explosion at their home. They've got a GoFundMe set up, and the mods here allowed me to post about it.

https://www.gofundme.com/f/help-mechack-jerome-family-recover-after-home-explosion?attribution_id=sl:388b9635-559f-4c43-b84f-e9dd80af26b1&utm_campaign=man_sharesheet_tip&utm_medium=customer&utm_source=copy_link

Full text of the campaign:

On the night of October 31st, Mechack Jérôme and his family were cooking food when their Bellevue home exploded. Mechack, as well as his wife and another family member, were rushed to the hospital with serious injuries, while their duplex has been condemned.

Jérôme is a well-established soccer player, having won an MLS Cup with Sporting Kansas City in 2013, and proudly captaining the Haitian national team many times in his 80 appearances for his country. He had joined Union Omaha soccer club this year, providing a valuable veteran presence for the club, and had settled into the Omaha area with his family.

This fundraiser serves two purposes: one, to aid the Jerome family with the medical expenses in treating their severe injuries from the explosion, and two, to provide support for their children while both Mechack and his wife recover.

Any amount donated will be greatly appreciated as the family heals from this, and any word that can be spread about this campaign will also be a much-needed boost.

We at Union Omaha soccer club thank you for your kindness and support as we rally around the Jerome family at this time.

Why the bad relationship between SKC and area youth teams.

First off I am not involved at all in youth soccer so I am looking for enlightenment. I have had heard tidbits here and there about local youth clubs and their disdain for dealing with SKC and that is goes back before the rebrand and even before hiring Vermes but it starts when Vermes took control of Blue Valley. What happened? Did the issues then contiue after the hiring of Vermes and the creation of the Academy? Almost 20 years removed there seems to still be a bad taste, why is that? How does it affect getting the areas best to commit to the Academy and into the MLS pipeline?

Kits…

If you could design the kits for SKC what would it look like? If you could use another kit company, outside of adidas, which company would you go with?

Is Keeping Vermes SKC Being Cheap?

In light of Vermes recent comments about ownership being cheap and not spending on players, I started thinking "is Vermes the cheap option?" We only ever hear that Vermes answers to Jake Reid and the owners. There's no one in between. I personally think Vermes is still a good coach who is asked to do too many jobs in the club and cannot give any his full attention. We know he likes to be in charge and he wants to do this job, but it's debatable if should be allowed to do it all.

Vermes is GM, head coach, technical director, a scout, has scouting and oversight duties in SKC2, and in charge of the Academy. I know he's one of the highest paid coaches in MLS at $750k, but he's wearing a lot of hats.

When I started digging, good coaches are making $500k a year. Others with more to prove are getting slightly less and bigger names are getting up to $1m. A quick search on GM's showed an average of $200k. A technical Director is another $150k. An Academy Director averages about $100k.

When you look at other structures, the President and GM are often a shared role, but not always. Then you have a coach with all the assistants, a technical director with a VP directly under him, and then scouting and academy as separate entities.

So I ask my question. Is Vermes allowed to take on so many roles because ownership is being cheap? Has ownership kept Vermes because replacing him would likely add a minimum $250-500k to their salary obligations each year? Firing Vermes would require the club to hire a GM (Jake Reid has proven unfit to be a GM and hasn't taken on that role as president), a Coach, and promoting Mike Burns to an equal level as the new coach, an academy director, and a SKC2 director. Any promotion replacement of Burns as Technical/Sporting Director would also require filling out his staff to an appropriate size. With all the additional staff required, the franchise could easily be looking at $1m/year or more to fill out the staff and maintain a league average performance.

Long story short, Vermes isn't paid enough for the jobs he's doing and replacing him would be incredibly costly to the franchise.
