Advise?

So I work full time and do side work here and there because the extra money is more than useful. One of my buddies works at a property management company and knows I do side work and that I'm good at what I do. He recently reached out to me asking me to service some HVAC units at a property that's about to go on the market. They also wanted me to bush hog some brush, clean out the building, service the exhaust hood Etc. He gave me a NTE amount of $1,000. So I did the work, had to use my own freon (actually was my own freon) and after 8 hours labor, 5 lbs of R410a, two trips there from home, 4 hours driving (location was over an hour from my house) I hit the 1k NTE amount and was able to finish all the work they requested. When I submitted my invoice, the owner of the company gives me a vendor packet to fill out VIA email. Now I have EIN, my side hustle is legitimate. But the vendor packet wants my business license # and my insurance policy #. Both of which I do not have as I can barely keep my nose above water as it is and can't afford those things. Can they legally not pay me for the services I've provided? Have any of you guys ran in to this before? I don't know how to continue with this.

Florida HVAC Union

Does anybody have experience with an HVAC union in Florida. I've Googled and found a couple. I don't know if it's worth the effort or something to look into. In my experience as a former paramedic, Florida EMS unions are trash. Hoping it's not that way with HVAC.

North Idaho HVACR employment

Curious what the wages are like in the CDA/sandpoint area? And if anyone knows of a good company to apply to? All I’ve seen online are sales based companies, is this the prevailing trend in the area? I’ve never worked for a commissioned based company, is it all that bad?

I have 7 years of service experience, starting in residential and light commercial all things heating and cooling then moving on to a union shop working strictly commercial and industrial where I’m now a level 2 journeyman out of local 208. I work on everything, boilers, chillers, RTUs, large air handlers, ERVs, VRF systems and mini splits all the way up to walk ins and ice machines.

I would prefer to stay in the union but from what I’ve seen there isn’t anything union up there.

Fujitsu mini split lockout temps - unpublished temp settings?

When installed with an auxiliary heat source, Function 66 sets the outdoor boundary temp where only the aux heat is on and the heat pump is disabled. These are the published settings:

Setting ValueSetting Description
00-4.0 F (-20 C)
01-0.4 F (-18 C)
023.2 F (-16 C)
036.8 F (-14 C)
0410.4 F (-12 C)
0514 F (-10 C)
0617.6 F (-8 C)
0721.2 F (-6 C)
0824.8 F (-4 C)

Do these keep going up in 2 degree C increments for setting values above 8? That seems likely, but I don't want to experiment with my customer's heat without knowing what's going to happen.

Seal or remove old insulation in return air?

I’m a plumber so this counts as a field question from a trade person right? lol

My home is from the 80s, this stuff is breaking down and I believe may be a culprit to dust in the house etc. is there a method to seal this stuff or should I just scrape it out and insulate the outside of the duct when I climb in the attic to pookie the duct seams.

What does everyone work on?

I see comments occasionally where people say we work on this but not that. At my company if it has the slightest connection to hvac/r we’ll work on it.

Split systems RTUs Boilers (HP, LP steam, hot water condensing and non condensing) Dearators Boilerfeeds Condensate return pumps All waterside piping and accessories Chillers Walk ins Racks Ice machines Pumps Air compressors Mini splits VRF Poolpac/dectron Fanwalls Lieberts Battery backup pods for data centers MUA units Domestic water heaters WSHP VFD’s Big Ass Fans Co2 Humidifiers (gas fired, electrode, resistive and HP direct) Fan coils Cooling towers Exhaust fans Etc…

We also do factory startup and commissioning for about 10+ different lines.

Just curious what everyone else works on. I swear you could have 100 years experience in this trade and still learn something new everyday.

What wage to ask for in Washington state ?

I have 06a journeyman license through the state. also have 10 years experience. Worked on many light commercial and residential equipment. Boilers, oil, gas related unit heaters, gas furnace, heat pumps, geothermal, city multi, trained young techs, when I left the company sold to new owner and it turned to a sales based company. When I left I made 35 an hour and 3 weeks vacation. I have a lot of experience but I don’t have that in what to ask for I have never jumped jobs. Any input would be much appreciated thanks.

East side of the state. Forgot to add that

Press tool for ductless

I hate being on a tall ladder fooling with the flares on a ductless. I had the thought that my press tool would be perfect for this. I cut off my flare fittings on the liquid line of the indoor head and on my lineset only to discover that a 1/4 inch streamline fitting only fits on the lineset side! The 1/4 inch line off the unit is just a hair bigger and wouldn’t fit into the coupling. I hadn’t considered that it would be an OD/ID situation. So I broke the rule and soldered it because I had cut the flare setup out and moved on. I’d really like to be able to use the press tool for this. Has anyone ran into this/ tried it and figured out how to use a press tool in this situation? Is there a special fitting available for an OD/ID mismatch sitch?

Navien NPF a solution in search of a problem?

Does this product seem kind of pointless, seems more complicated than a standard furnace and isn't used for DHW. Has anyone come across a product similar that does both SH and DHW?

DWI dismissal

Hey everyone! I’m nearly done with trade school (just a month left) and wrapping up my DWI case, which will be dismissed (no conviction). I’ll be eligible to expunge it next year. Right now, I’m looking for HVAC positions that don’t require driving. My instructor suggested I look into commercial or in-house maintenance roles at places like hospitals, apartments, or schools etc. Does anyone know where I can find drive-free positions like these? In the meantime while my case gets dismissed. I’m in Houston, TX—any website or advice would be appreciated on where can i apply maybe even apps. Thank you !

Looking for advice on how to get my foot in the industry.

I'm sorry if this is not the right place to ask about this. I wasn't quite sure. But I just got my EPA 608 and I'm working on getting my OSHA 10. I'm just not sure what to do once I have both. Just start applying for jobs? Look for an apprenticeship, specifically? How do I find an apprenticeship? I'm not sure that kind of thing is listed on job sites.

This will be my first real job/attempt at a career so I feel like I'm a little in the dark about how it all works and the environment I'm getting into.

I'm also in an awkward position right now because, for reasons that are irrelevant here, I'm likely going to have to move to another state in a few months, and the move is going to come with new bills (which is why I'm trying to get a job). This complicates the job search, obviously. Would you suggest I find something here (in HVAC or otherwise) for the next few months in order to save some money and have a small buffer until I can get a job in the new location? Should I start working on getting a job in the new location now?

I know some of this might sound obvious, and I'm sorry that it's not worded totally coherently. But I don't really have anyone else I can talk to about this. I am very much looking forward to working in HVAC though. I'm ready to work, I'm just not sure how to get the experience the right way.

Need to vent here about a dispute with a customer. No names will be named.

We changed out a water source heat pump for this guy about six months ago. He still hasn't paid. Little backstory here: He has a three story house with a water source unit on each floor. For years now, we have been fighting with this house trying to figure out why only two out of the three units would run at once, not all three. If we tried to run all three then one of them would go out on high pressure. We always assumed it was a water related issue, we told them to contact a well man about it again and again, but it was never resolved. Fast forward to Feb. of this year, his first floor unit which is old as dirt finally dies, compressor shorted internally, we had to wait four months for Bosch to build and ship this unit to us (assholes) and in the meantime he was gonna get the money together because as everyone here knows, these water source units are ridiculously expensive. We get the unit in, its all plumbed in, its going out on high pressure... neither of the other units are on. We tried the other two, same thing. Don't know wtf happened. We go back to the shop and put everybodys heads together and figure out that all three units are going to the same water outlet pipe, for years there must have been a partial clog there, hence all the trouble we've had over the years, and now, somehow, its a full blockage. We call the customer, who is working out of state and inform him of the situation, and he calls bullshit on us, stating that "it was working fine before y'all messed with it." Which it wasn't. Who all has heard that one a bunch of times? So WE call a well man, at our expense, to come and look at it the next day but this is unacceptable to the customer so our office manager says lets cut the pipe where the water comes out of the house and see if the clog is in the piping inside the house or in the ground. We cut the pipe, and the clog is in the ground, water is flowing out of the house and all three units are running perfectly now. Problem is, its flooding the yard now, but the units are working. The well man comes later that evening and runs a pipe from the house out into the woods, no harm done. Next day hes out there and determines that indeed there is a total blockage down in the ground and informs us that there is NO WAY IN HELL we could have caused that, its a sediment buildup from years of lack of maintenance. The customer eventually gets the guy who originally put this piping and well system in the house back in the eighties to come and look at it, but before he goes over there he calls us to ask whats going on. We tell him the story and even ask him if there was any way WE could have caused this, he says "highly unlikely," and later informs us that no we didn't cause this. Later I call his wife at the house, hes out of state still working, I'd rather deal with her at this point than him, she seems more reasonable. Tell her all that has transpired between us, her husband, and the well people, that her husband was calling bs on us and blaming us for the problems with the well and that we don't appreciate that. But our job is done, the unit itself is installed correctly, if it has water going through the outlet pipe then all three units will run, which they weren't before, we need our payment, she says she'll get her husband to take care of it when he gets back in the next week. And thats the last we heard from them. No phone calls, no letter, no check in the mail. We tried multiple times over the last six months to contact them to no avail. Finally, a coworker and I decide to go over there today and have a calm discussion and see if we could get our money from him. The calm didn't last long. He starts yelling and screaming at us that he never liked me to begin with, that I was a dick to him and his wife, the only reason he was using us was because the father of a friend of his owned the company (we've been working at this house since his deceased dad owned it and never had a problem with him), I apparently said something that made his wife cry, our screwing up his well cost him twelve thousand dollars to get shit fixed, on and on. He wasn't listening to me when I tried to tell him that hes been having well problems for years and years and the well people told us that there was no way we could have caused that, and he goes on to tell us, yell at us really, that the well man that put the system in originally told him that we screwed it up. BULLSHIT. That guy told US that there was no way we caused it, it was a sediment buildup from lack of maintenance over years. And, as I said, calm had gone out the window, we went back and forth for quite a bit, throwing f-bombs at eachother. Eventually, he writes a small check for us as partial payment and says he'll get more to us next week. I don't remember the name of the well man who put it in originally so I asked him and he said he was done talking to me, to go f!@# myself. I have been fuming over this all damn day now. Shaking with rage. I didn't want to have a shouting match with this guy when I went over there, I just wanted to ask, calmly and politely, what was going on, could we get our money, we've been patiently waiting, did ya'll maybe mail it and it got lost in the mail. I didn't want it to get like that. I know I'm not the only guy on here to ever have to deal with a customer like this. I just really needed to come on here and vent.

Urban legend?

I might get down votes for this, but I'll tell you my experience. I have clients that I have been servicing their furnaces for over 30 years. The only time I've had to replace a flame sensor is if the porcelain got broken by one of our other service techs. I use plumbers sanding cloth to clean the flame sensors & have never seen a problem. I don't think it's really necessary to use steel wool or a dollar bill, etc. when my method has worked without a problem literally for decades. Blast away!

Gauges

I work on the hvac systems in my property maintenance role for about 600 units for a property maintenance company. Anything that I can't figure out we bring in our contractor. Right now I use analog gauges, 1- r22, 1-410a. I'm thinking of upgrading on my own dime for a set of digital. I'm looking at elitech. I don't have the cash for fieldpiece. However with the new refrigerants coming out, will I need to buy 3/4 different sets. I purge the lines as soon I hook up to the ports, is this enough or do I really need to buy multiple sets. Thanks for any advice.

Zone control for HRV/ERV

What have you guys put in for utilizing HRV and ERV for exhausting bathrooms? There are two systems I've spec'd recently (in Canada) we have the Posh Grill which works well with Lifebreath HRV's, and I have a contractor using the ZRT boxes with Aldes HRV/ERV.

It's becoming super common that we are specifying this for almost every build, but I get a lot of pushback from guys who haven't done them before so I end up designing for only 1-2 bathrooms and boost with no damper control. I'd like to hear from more guys in the field on what they've installed, whether it's expensive (so Zender is out for most homes), what works well, how it sets up, and any issues you've encountered.

Appreciate any feedback!
