BLACK DECKER 8,000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner VERY loud

Hello All,

I wanted to check if this was normal. I got the BLACK DECKER 8,000 BTU Portable AC and it is way too loud. When I leave it on fan mode its not too loud, but when I set it to AC mode It makes a very loud rumbling/vibrating sound. Like I can hear it from three floors away. I feel like my neighbors might even hear it. I noticed when I try to lift the AC up, not actually lift it off the ground, but pull it upwards, the noise is still loud but cuts in half. Is this normal? anything I can do to reduce the noise?

What should I do if my air conditioner is leaking water?

So, my air conditioner decided to start leaking water everywhere, and I'm low-key freaking out. Like, I don't want to be dealing with this mess, you feel me? Anyway, I figured I'd hit up the Reddit fam for some advice before I end up swimming in my own living room.

So, what's the deal with ACs leaking water? Anyone else been through this nightmare? Like, did you find out it was some simple fix or did you have to call in the pros? I'm hoping it's not gonna break the bank to sort this out, but I also don't want to DIY it and make things worse, you know?

I've been googling like crazy, but I wanna hear from real people who've been there. Share your wisdom, fam! Like, any DIY hacks or tricks to stop this waterworks show? Or maybe you've got some horror stories that'll make me feel better about my situation? Hit me up with all the deets.

Any portable/battery powered AC units that can be used to cool a car? Need help for a homeless father.

My father is homeless and refuses my offers of housing. He sleeps in his car across the street from where he works. Summers here reach 100+ degrees. I've caught him several times sleeping in his car during the day and drenched in sweat. I tried getting him a fan but it didn't do much. I've also tried an Icyzbreeze cooler but it's not realistic because it uses so much ice.

Are there any portable, battery powered AC units that would actually work for a car? I've searched over and over and I can't really find 1 that will keep a car cool during hot days without draining a battery in 2 hours. Any help is greatly appreciated!

How can one minimize the noise generated by an air conditioner?

I've been dealing with this annoying buzz from my air conditioner lately, and it's driving me nuts! I mean, who can focus with all that racket in the background? So, I figured I'd reach out to you guys and see if anyone has some solid tips for minimizing this noise pollution.

I've tried everything from blasting music to drowning it out (not the best solution, trust me) to just straight-up yelling at the thing to shut up (surprisingly ineffective). But there's gotta be a better way, right?

I've heard about stuff like putting foam padding around the unit or even getting one of those fancy noise-canceling curtains. Has anyone actually tried these? Do they work, or am I just throwing money down the drain?

Is it necessary to cover the outdoor unit of an air conditioner during the winter?

I've been wondering lately about something that's been bugging me every winter: should I cover my outdoor AC unit or not? Like, I know some folks swear by covering it up to protect it from the elements, but then others say it's totally unnecessary and could even trap moisture inside, causing rust or other damage.

I mean, I get both arguments, but I'm still on the fence. So, fellow Redditors, what's your take on this? Have you covered your outdoor unit before? Did it make a difference? Any horror stories or success stories to share?

And if you're firmly in the "don't cover it" camp, do you do anything else to winterize your AC? Like, maybe just give it a good cleaning or something?

Let's pool our collective wisdom here and figure this out together. Winter's tough enough without worrying about our poor AC units, right?

Thermostat

I've replaced my thermostat to the new Amazon one and The installed upstairs is working but for some reason I cannot get power to the one downstairs even though I've plugged the wires into the exact spots they were in the old one , any suggestions?

Is liquid coolant dangerous if it touches the skin?

Our a/c has been leaking liquid coolant in a spot over our bathtub for a while now, apartment maintenance knows but they've not fixed it yet and we have no ETA. It's our only shower and the drainage point is positioned where it won't fall directly on us but it could splash or mix in with the water our feet end up in. Is it safe for us to shower with it leaking?

Stay away from Midea

My Midea window air conditioner has a terrible mold/mildew smell and when I talked to the local air conditioning repair company, they said Midea (U shaped units in particular) have a mold problem. They’re also very difficult to disassemble to try and clean it. So frustrated that I spent so much money on something that will cost me double to replace or hire someone to do a full and thorough clean.

No wonder so many people sell them on marketplace. Anyway — if you’re thinking about it, think twice!

Need help making a decision about new ac

I have two companies that put a bid in to replace my ac. Both have pros and cons and making this decision is driving me crazy: what do you think?

Company 1:

  • reputable, 4.8 stars on google (76 reviews)
  • $6,200 for total install
  • offers
  • Install of Coleman AC with 10 year FULL warranty including parts and labor

Company 2:

  • 4.6 stars on google (60 reviews)
  • $5,200 for total install
  • Install of Carrier AC BUT only has 10 year warranty on compressor, 5 year part warranty and 1 year labor warranty

I don’t know much about ACs but from my research, it looks like carrier is the much better brand. That’s the cause of my indecision. What would you go with?

Stray bullet through the coil? Is it repairable?

The AC wouldn't kick on. The unit is only three years old, so it's under warranty. The tech came out and found the damage shown in the attached video. The company is quoting $7k for replacement. (What appears to be a) Bullet hole is, obviously, not covered under warranty.
I don't have any better images at this time, but is this kind of thing generally repairable? Can a tech cut out the damaged sections of copper pipe and solder in new?

Simple or big?

So my air conditioning is blowing cool air but the thermostat reads 5 degrees higher. Is this something simple like a recalibration or freon? Or is it something bigger

How can I improve air quality with my air conditioner?

I've been thinking about how to make the most out of my air conditioner, especially when it comes to improving air quality. I mean, who doesn't want to breathe in clean, fresh air, right? So, I'm reaching out to you guys for some advice and tips on how to amp up the air quality game with my AC.

I've heard a few things here and there, like changing the air filters regularly and making sure the unit is properly maintained. But I'm curious if there are any other tricks or hacks that you all swear by. Maybe some DIY air purifying solutions or specific settings on the AC that work wonders?

Can apartment communities turn their air conditioners on and off?

Recently moved into an apartment. It has been getting hot inside the apartment so we attempted to turn on the air conditioner. It wasn't working. We contacted the office about it and we were told that the air conditioners in the community aren't turned back on until May 1st. I have never heard of something like this. Can air conditioning units for large apartment complexes be turned off for winter?

Looking For A Horizontal Sliding Window AC Unit

I am looking for a Window AC but my biggest issue is that I have a horizontal sliding window. Most of the recommendations that I see work only with vertical sliding windows.

Are there are any ACs specifically designed to fit in a horizontal sliding window at a reasonable cost?

The other option I have is to go for portable ACs, but I've heard they are not nearly as good at cooling as Window ACs.

Need help choosing a new A/C

Greetings,

I'm about to buy a new A/C for a small multi use room. Its dimensions are 13ft x 13ft with 10ft ceilings. I use that dedicated space as a personal training studio but I also live inside (sleeping, working, relaxing etc). At this time, I am using an old 9000btu Miyaki A/C, but it's like 15 years old.

I've been told that Daikin, Midea and AUX airconditions are awesome. I was thinking of getting a 12000btu. Please, do give me some advice on the specific model that you'd choose, or any other advice (even different btu's or anything).

Thanks!

Need an advice: Full DC Inverter vs. Dual Inverter

Hello, need some advice over the two AC. My choices was LG 1.3hp Dual Inverter and Midea U-type 1.5hp Full DC Inverter (both was Window type).

My room was 15sqm×2.6m height with a gaming PC and Personal refrigerator.

What will be the pros and cons of Full DC inverter and Dual Inverter?

Need AC that doesn’t stick out too far into the room

I need a new window air conditioner, and there is a radiator right in front of the window that is taller than the window sill itself (great design) so I can’t have an AC that sticks into the room any farther than 4”. The one I currently have just fits in the space but it’s super old and crappy so I want to replace it. The problem is when I look at ACs to buy, there are only dimensions given for the full AC, not just that part, so I can’t know without actually buying them. So I figured I’d try asking actual people - does anyone by any chance know of good ACs like that?

How do I know if my AC unit is the right size for my space?

Hey everyone, so I've been sweating bullets in my apartment lately and I'm starting to think my AC might not be cutting it. I mean, it's blasting, but it feels like a hairdryer on low setting. How do you know if your AC is the right size for your space? Like, is there some sort of magic formula or do I just eyeball it?

I've heard horror stories about people buying these mega AC units only to find out they're way too big for their room, or worse, too small. And let's be real, ain't nobody got time or money for that kind of mistake. So, fellow Redditors, what's your secret? How did you figure out if your AC was the Goldilocks size for your space?

I'm all ears for any tips, tricks, or horror stories you want to share. And hey, if you've got some life-changing hacks to make your AC work better, spill the beans! Let's turn this thread into a treasure trove of cool (pun intended) knowledge.

Any Recommendations for Small Window AC Unit? (Need Urgent Help)

Currently I am without an AC and would appreciate recommendations for a small window unit.

The one I currently have installed is about 20” wide, so anything equal to this or smaller should fit, I think. I am not too sure how much cooling an AC this small can provide, but I am looking for the highest possible in this size.

Would appreciate the help.

Broken A/C suddenly turns on after 5 years

So, I live in a duplex with an old AC unit that has not been touched for at least the past 5 years (and likely more). I've never asked about it since I have a swamp cooler. I was out in the yard this weekend, and it suddenly started up. The fan was going, and it was running with a buzzing sound. It stayed on for more than 24 hours, and, as you can see in the picture, one pipe was frosted over which I checked on for at least 3 hours. I alerted my landlord but he hasn't been able to look into it yet. But how can this have happened? Here are all the factors:

Last fall, I tore off the decaying cover, so all winter long it was getting snow and rain if that matters.

This was the first warm weekend, so maybe the warmer air did something to the compressor or refrigerant?

I have no access to turning on this unit, so I assumed that my neighbor turned it on. She claimed to my landlord that she didn't switch it on, and why would she- she's lived there for 10 years and hasn't had AC either. I have a little suspicion that she might have turned it on, not expecting cool air, but at least circulation, but I can't verify.

I turned all my breakers off/on in my unit just to make sure there wasn't something that triggered it on.

There is a complicated story as to why this A/C has been neglected, but what matters is that it has been neglected, and everyone assumed it wasn't working.

The only other factor that is probably not worth noting is that it turned on when I was with someone who was helping me plan my garden. She wasn't near it though. It's a stumper.

Any guesses?

And yes, those wires and pipes have all been hooked up like that for 5 years.
