JB / Jazz or Seth Lover?

I want to upgrade pickups on my PRS custom SE. I am considering JB/Jazz, Seth Lovers set, or maybe Jazz on the neck abd Seth Lover (Sh-55 with 4 wires) on the bridge? Would the combination work? I am also wondering how jazz will sound with the nickle cover.

I play jazz, blues, funk, rock, and sometimes reggae. I will use this guitar mostly for recording.

Do I need a guitar setup after blocking my tremolo and changing strings from 9s to 10s?

I blocked the tremolo on my SSS Strat with a taped up stack of nickels because my guitar would sound out of tune when I played chords. I don’t use the trem at all anyways. That improved it. Now I want to change strings from 9s to 10s (D’Addario XL 10-46)Would I need to take it in for a re-setup?

Anyone Here Have Or Can Comment On A Yamaha Pacifica PAC 120H?

Pretty much the title. Been looking at nominally "entry level" guitars. Budget is sub $500. Looked at (and listened to online sound examples of) various Squier Classic Vibe Strat and Tele variations, and then tripped over info on the Yamaha 120H, which has 2 humbuckers. I like the sound range options and especially the ringing clarity of some of those options (at least as indicated with online clips ;-)

Edit to add: leaning towards a no vibrato guitar, which aligns with the 120H.

I keep looking around but keep circling back to the 120H. Wondering if anyone has one/has played one and could share impressions, critiques, etc.

These have been made for a while with apparently a few variations. Would love to learn more about those variations and if there are preferred years, models, or country of manufacture to look for in used ones. Seem to be several available via ebay Japan for $300-$350ish but with shipping the total gets pretty close to the price for a new one.

(Third one down here. https://usa.yamaha.com/products/musical_instruments/guitars_basses/el_guitars/pacifica/pac_100.html

I'd go with the 'yellow natural satin' if I buy new.)

Any comments or suggestions welcome!

TIA!

Guitar as a gift? Recommendations wanted

Hi there! My son (20m) took up guitar last year and has been making impressive progress (he can play Jeff Buckley songs for example). He currently has an acoustic with pick-ups, and I am thinking of getting him an electric for Christmas. Something nice but not too crazy. I was thinking like a Yamaha Pacifica 612.

My question for you all:

- better to give the gift, or give him a spending range to go shopping on his own?
- if gift - I see a lot of the shops have a "setup" service. I never did this before. Is that worth it?

Thanks in advance!

Guild vs Gretsch Hollowbodies

Wanting a hb for blues and roots. Locally 2 for sale. Guild Starliner 1 with Bigsby styled Guild vibrato or Gretsch G2655T Streamliner Centerblock Jr double cut with Bigsby. The Gretsch is about $150 cheaper. Decide my future Redditt.

Been looking for a 10 string guitar forever, need leads

As the title says, I've been trying to find a 10 string guitar similar to how the BC Rich Perfect 10 set up was.

My searches are giving me nothing but 10 strings evenly spaced as opposed to how the Perfect 10 has it set up.

Is there a specific name for these guitars that I'm missing? Are these just not popular enough to keep in rotation? Reverb is just showing me sold out or collector prices.

Any leads would be helpful.

Need help ID’ing this finish!

Can’t find much online similar. Surely this isn’t iced tea burst but super faded. This is much more yellow vs the orange shade I’m seeing in a lot of finishes!

Jeeze. You guys have seen my posts - this is my 3rd guitar in about as many weeks. I have a local shop that is giving outrageous deals. I snagged this guy. It’s different. It’s funky. And it was a STEAL.

Loud buzz after installing new pickup

I'm switching the single coil bridge pick up in my Telecaster for a SD Hot Rails Humbucker. This is my first attempt at soldering in a long, long time.

I removed the old pickup, and connected up the new one : hot (black) lead to the same lug on the volume on the volume pot from which I removed the old pick up, red and white leads soldered together and taped up, green and bare leads soldered together, then soldered to the back of the volume pot (ground).

I plugged it in and I can hear that:

* The switch correctly selects both the neck and bridge pickups.

* The volume and tone controls work as expected.

* There is a terrible buzz regardless of which pickup is selected.

So - bad ground, right?

I think the new connection between the humbucker and the ground is solid, could I have introduced a problem somewhere else?

I have a multimeter, is there a way to test specific connections (rather than plugging in the guitar and testing the whole system)?

I haven't screwed the control plate back onto the body or reattached the pickguard - but this shouldn't create an electrical problem, right?

Could it be something else? I have a four-way switch between the single coil neck and the new humbucker (this puts the pickups in series or parallel) - could this extra complexity cause a problem? (I'm tempted to replace this with a three-way switch since I don't really use this series/parallel feature).

Or is it my unpracticed soldering? ;)

TL:DR; I've installed new pickup, I think the wiring is correct and the new ground connection between this pickup and the volume pot is solid - what else could be wrong?

How to test pickup coil wire continuity ?

My ibanez GRG7221 's Bridge pickup Ibanez PSND2 (H) was broken gave it to a friend they unwound half-rotation and failed to resolder.

How to test continuity ? I tried setting multimeter to 20K Ohm (also 20, 200K) but seems like the coilwire is very thin.

I have heard once unwound whole pickup is dead. Is it true ?
