About a year ago, I posted here about Gabriel Vilardi. Just a reminder, he was my favorite Kings player before he was traded. He is still one of my favorite players. I’m hoping he has a great season.

I think the Jets have a good chance of signing him long term too. Just remember that he is the son of Italian immigrants and not romanced by a luxury lifestyle and material possessions. His parents made huge sacrifices so that both of their sons could play hockey. And I believe that the most important thing for Gabriel is to reward his parents for their sacrifices. I think that the guaranteed $7 million (USD) went a long way towards fulfilling that dream.

I believe that Gabriel would have never signed for that amount with the Kings. It’s important for the average hockey fan to understand that the cost of real estate in the South Bay (Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, Redondo Beach area) in California is ridiculously expensive. A luxury condominium can easily cost $4 million or more. I believe Gabriel wanted at least $5 million guaranteed for multiple years in order stay in LA. The Kings just didn’t have the cap space to accommodate that and I also believe that Vilardi would have signed a multi-year offer sheet for $4M+ if one had been offered on July 1st. That’s why both the Kings and Jets hurried to make a deal before July 1st last year.

I think Vilardi is worth a (4 X $6.5M) extension. That would give him a chance at free agency at 29 years old. I think he will re-sign in Winnipeg because 1) he loves Canada; 2) he loves hockey; and 3) he loves the opportunity of playing on the 1st line with Schiefele.

So yes, Winnipeg won the trade. But both teams (Kings and Jets) were in situations where they didn’t have a chance at signing and at risk of losing them to an offer sheet.

Good luck Jets fans. I’ll be rooting for Vilardi again!
