Tips, PSAs, & Resources

Low Quality TN Displays

A lot of laptops today still use low quality TN displays. The quality is worse than IPS or good TN. This is the case for many 1080p displays that aren't listed as IPS or 120Hz+, and nearly all displays 768p/900p.

Comparison pictures: 1, 2, 3, 4

Notable models:

  • Many Thinkpads, Latitudes, Probooks with base screen options.
  • Many lower priced laptops, even in price ranges were decent displays are available.

There may be other concerns too such as colorspace or response times. Many IPS displays are far from perfect still.

False High-Res Displays

Some laptops that list high resolutions (1440p through 4K) use "PenTile" RG/BW or WR/GB matrix panels instead of RGB/RGB. These trick consumers because the listed resolution numbers are the same, but the detail is less, and they produce artifacts. These have mostly been phased out, but are still present or available in some models.

Notable models:

  • EUROCOM Tornado F5/F5W/X4C
  • Clevo w/ Samsung/LG '4K' 15.6"

Note: Sharp and OLED Samsung panels are true 4K.

Confusing CPU branding

U-series vs H-series, and 2-core vs 4-core, mean more than Core i5 vs Core i7. The difference between an "i5" 8250U and "i7" 8550U is less than it might sound like. An "i5" 8300H is more powerful than either. More info is available here.

[Iran] 30,000,000 toomans. (Or 300,000,000 Ryals)

Hi all.

LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

  • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

My current total budget is 30 million toomans, but I might be able to raise it to 35

  • Are you open to refurbs/used?

No, I barely trust stores here with new products, never mind used or refurbished.

  • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Performance would be my highest priority, I don't particularly care for battery life or form factor

  • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Not important at all

  • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

N/A

  • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I don't use heavy applications or video editing, but ideally I would like it if I could run a game like the Witcher 3 (or games of its generation, but that is not a priority)

  • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Ideally games like withcer 3, doom 2016 that generation in general (playing at the highest quality possible isn't a priority for me, 30 FPS on medium setting is acceptable for me) but I mostly play older strategy games (C&C, supreme commander) and paradox games (mostly hearts of iron 4), so I'll be ok if I could play those at a good enough performance.

  • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Reliability is pretty important to me, I will take good care of what I buy, and I want to use it for 6 or 7 years ideally.

  • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I am aware that my budget maybe too low to buy a laptop that satisfies my requirements, but I am open to buying one using installment plans (is this the correct English translation? Just to clarify I mean paying a fee upfront and then doing monthly payments) thanks!

(UK) looking for a gaming laptop ~£1500

Hello Reddit, I'm looking for a gaming laptop to run mostly games like Monster Hunter World and Wilds at medium settings.

I am in the UK and my budget is around £1500. I would prefer to buy new but I'm open to refurbs.

Portability isn't an issue as I'll have it on desks all of the time. Battery life isn't an issue either as it will be plugged in. I also don't really care about looks or touchscreen capabilities. I would prefer a good quality keyboard and a 14" or 16" screen.

I heard the Lenovo legion laptops are good but honestly I am a total beginner in terms of gaming laptop knowledge so I would love some directions of what some good ones are and how to get the most bang for my buck.

Also should I be waiting for like black Friday sales to buy?

(USA) Laptop for Travel/Hotel, $1500-2000 budget

  • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: $1500-2000 USD, could go a bit higher for a decent performance/quality increase.
  • Are you open to refurbs/used? Possibly, prefer new.
  • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? Form factor: low; Build quality: medium-high; Performance: high; Battery life: medium.
  • How important is weight and thinness to you? Low-medium; will be for hotel rooms (with air travel) mainly.
  • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 16" minimum.
  • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Mainly for gaming, along the lines of Elden Ring, Monster Hunter Wilds and some older MMOs (Guild Wars 2, Elder Scrolls Online).
  • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? See above for games, 1080p/60 FPS min.
  • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Mostly focused on build quality and performance, I'll be able to have a keyboard/mouse with me.
  • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. So I found out recently I'm going to need to start traveling a bit for work, 2-3 weeks a quarter but 4-5 days at a time. I'm looking for a laptop for gaming I can travel with by air and staying in a hotel, wouldn't really need to be carrying it around on a daily basis.

Looking for a cheap personal/school laptop

Hi, I recently bought a $330 USD hp laptop for personal use / school, so my budget is pretty cheap but I’m willing to spend more if that’s what’s needed. I only used it for 30 min but it couldn’t run more than two tabs on google, and my cpu is at 100% no matter how short I use it, despite updating and restarting, nothing has been downloaded and it only runs google. I am ok with using a cheap laptop as I am fine with transferring everything to google and mostly just using that, however I can’t get a Chromebook incase my uni needs me to download certain software. The computer I bought would be unuseable for any type of schoolwork or personal use, when I tried to open a third tab I got a notification that it can’t be done. What I need the laptop for is, I need it to be able to run multiple tabs and switch between them (I love researching things + uni study), run google systems like drive, docs, etc well, have the ability to run Microsoft software if needed, and ideally, not need much care. I don’t know much about computers so I’m not knowledgeable about what’s a virus, how to download software for things, stuff like that. So if it’s minimal user interference, that would be great. My budget is about $450aud-700. I know cheap laptops aren’t great, but if all/most cheap laptops really are this useless, then what would you recommend for a used laptop? Where to buy, brand, things to look out for, etc. The same with new laptops. Thanks so much.

Looking for laptop for wfh/personal use; budget $1800 Canada

Hi! I've only used 2 laptops in my lifetime. My first one was a Dell that lasted me 9 years, and my current one is a HP Essential 14 which is on it's fifth year.

I'm bit of a loyalist, so seeking laptops from these brands. Unless it's stupid and futile, then I'm open to other options 🥲

Dell XPS 15 and HP Essentials 17 seem good options, but I do want advice from people who know these things more than me. I want something that will last me another 5 years or so. My work is mostly Microsoft office + browsing. So multitasking is pretty much my top priority. After work hours, I like to be on call with friends and stream movies/ series.

That's all. Thanks in advance for reading!

2-in-1/Flex Laptop for mom (Up to $500) (United States)

My dad wants to get my mom a laptop for Christmas, he wants to spend spend around $500 at most but could go over. She wants a 2-in-1/flex laptop.

LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

Around $500 usd

Are you open to refurbs/used?

Yes

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

2-in-1, she would be taking it with her, so a good battery life and light would be preferential

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Not deal breaking if it isn't but preffered

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

14 inches at most

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

It would be used mostly for browsing but some light gaming

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Hidden object or point and click type game, some like The Room on Steam

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

As long as it is decently solid, she will probably have it in a case when travelling

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

$500 isn't a super big budget so we will most likely be looking at refurbished, thanks in advance for any help

Asus Zenbook 14 vs Lenovo Yoga Pro 7i Gen 9

I'm trying to decide between these two laptops both with core ultra 9 and 32gb ram, which I can pickup at a similar price. However I want to know the key differences and trade-offs (especially battery life) and which would be better for school/uni.

Budget PC with windows 11 pro capabilities

I’m trying to find any laptop that can run windows 11 pro for on the go mini pc, i’m trying to have a backup portable windows 11 pro capability to code and mod stuff like a pc would. I’m looking to find something used sub $100 but if really desirable sub $300, trying to get as cheap but nothing super slow or crappy hardware, I can repair laptops if needed, will not add new parts except ssd or hdd. I’m not picky on brands, just need a dang good budget laptop. Also ports I would like to have are ethernet and Type C but it’s not needed.

Laptop for School/Gaming (1200-1300 USD)

Looking for a laptop with the following for school, and gaming (gaming only really plugged in). Budget is pretty capped at $1200 (education account money), but willing to throw in $100-200 of my own money if it's a good deal.

  • At least 144hz
  • Good battery life, at least 6 hours on normal loads (Word, Google, IDEs)
  • Play mostly Valorant and Minecraft
  • Windows

Currently looking at two Lenovo Legions:

New laptop for photo editing + everyday use

I'm looking for a PC laptop that:

  • is 13'-14' (thereabouts)
  • MUST have a nice screen that's color accurate and bright. Current laptop is 400 nits.
  • Preferably NOT OLED. I'm worried about burn in, but will hear OLED folks out
  • has 1TB of space
  • has at least 16gb of RAM (but preferably more)
  • Nice keyboard with decent travel distance in the keys (hated the old 'butterfly' style keyboard on Macs)
  • Functional trackpad as I use it a lot

Uses:

  • Casual, everyday use
  • I'm a hobby photographer so use Photoshop a lot and process large RAW files
  • I write a lot!
  • I'll be running Windows 11

What I don't care about:

  • Budget - I want to see what suggestions you all have regardless of $
  • Gaming (though light games like Stardew Valley are a bonus)
  • Battery - I'm usually plugged in
  • Weight, though light is nice
  • Sound
  • Ports, since I have adapters and dongles. Just need two USB-C.
  • Touch screen or tablet functionality

Currently I have a Dell XPS 13, which I got in 2019. It's a great laptop so the newest Dell XPS is a possibility. I had an HP Spectre in the past I liked. I'm open to gaming PCs etc if they have what I'm looking for.

Looking for laptop for studying; budget: £500-1000 (UK)

  • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: £500-1000
  • Are you open to refurbs/used? No
  • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? Good battery life essential; 2-in-1 okay but not too fussed, durability/build quality is important as I am clumsy & I want the performance to be decent so I can run a few basic programs like Word/Excel/GraphPad Prism/video lectures etc (I study pharmacology & will probably want to do a master's so something that will last a few years).
  • How important is weight and thinness to you? not too bothered about thinness (HDMI port essential) but the lighter the better
  • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 14" is ideal
  • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. No video/photo editing or gaming, just the more basic programs listed above, maybe coding but nothing major
  • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A
  • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Reliable build quality, backlit keyboard, fingerprint reader OR face recognition
  • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Mainly looking for something that is light, good battery life & will run the programs I need with relative ease & can get through the day without needing charging (if that's even possible lol?) Windows is definitely essential

Looking for a Laptop :3

So, not sure if you guys can help me but I am (as the title says) looking for a laptop with specific requirements. So first of all, I am just going to do the basic stuff, streaming, browsing, classwork, and maybe I'll try to learn how to code or something like rendering (you get the idea). Now, maybe some light gaming could be involved like running Geometry Dash with decent performance. Now I'll get to the specifics :P :

1440p display (pls)

at least 120hz (gonna use a monitor that runs 165hz so i wanna go over 60 while using it)

really good i5 processor or a not to crazy i7 (I heard an i5 can run GD but maybe an i7 is better?)

I don't mind the size or battery life, but as long as it doesn't go from 100 to 70 in literally 2 seconds its fine. I plan on getting a pc someday, but it is currently too complicated, and getting a pre-built has some downsides that make me feel like a perfectionist :(

Budget would be around maybe 900 to 1000 US dollars.

Screen size could be 16"

Geometry dash is currently the only game i think of playing on it might change

overall, a little hybrid/little bit of everything when it comes to the things it can do would be nice (tried my best to use the form :) maybe rblx too

Macbook or windows laptop for mechanical engineering

I'm not sure if this is the right subreddit for this kind of question but my posts got removed from all the engineering subreddits so here I am.

Im currently studying mechanical engineering and need to buy a laptop. I wanted to buy a macbook, mainly becuase of the battery, small size and compatibility with other apple products. Its even more tempting now after they made the base model 16 gb ram. There are however, certain softwares I will need to use which does not run on macos, such as solid edge, which is why a windows laptop might be more convenient. I do have a windows desktop at home and there are school computers I can use for the software that isnt supported on mac, although doing work on a laptop means i will be less restricted.

There is the option to remote into the school computers but I have heard that might affect performance and also, if the connection is unstable you could lose unsaved work, so that might not be the best idea.

As you might be able to tell, I have a bit of a dilemma, any input would be greatly appreciated!

Budget laptop for uni/gaming?

[UK] I'm looking for a laptop that would hopefully be below £200-£300 that could be good for university work (run programs like QIGS) and hopefully have good enough storage/disk space to run the sims 4 and all its packs? But that would jus be a bonus really.

I'm not familiar with laptops, but my most recent was an ASUS, not sure which model, and a HP laptop, so maybe something similar?

  • Are you open to refurbs/used?
  • only if in good condition

  • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
  • 14 inches is preffered but doesnt matter much
  • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.-

Laptop for Grandma!

Hello! My grandma is in her late 70s and has been dealing with the same laptop for the last 10+ years. The thing barely runs and I've finally convinced her to make her life easier and update it.

I don't need exact suggestions down to the finest detail, because she specifically wants to go look in person at whatever is in stock at Walmart, Best Buy, Costco, etc. This is probably best because I don't think she knows what she wants yet. I just want to know the bare basics of what she needs and doesn't need so I can steer her away from unnecessary cost.

  • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase.: As cheap as we can reasonably go while still getting something that will last. She is retired and on a fixed income. We are in the US.
  • Are you open to refurbs/used? Probably not, as we are going for in-store stock.
  • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? She pretty much keeps it plugged in at her dining table 24/7 so battery life is unimportant. Keeping it as simple as possible would be best, so no touch screens, no 2-in-1s, etc. So most important is probably just having performance that can handle a bunch of browser tabs and playing a couple of basic games (I'm talking like mahjong).
  • How important is weight and thinness to you? Unimportant, it will sit on her dining table.
  • Do you have a preferred screen size? She hasn't said anything about this.
  • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Not at all, aside from the basic games like solitaire.
  • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Reliable build quality is most important. And it must be a Windows computer, she really hates learning new tech stuff and it stresses her out and makes her frustrated.
  • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Basically I just want something simple that she can use intuitively and not get frustrated or have to replace for a while. What are the minimums I should be looking for as far as storage, processor, etc? What's overkill? Any brands or models to steer clear of?

Lenovo ThinkPad T14S Gen 2I vs. Dell Latitude 7410?

Can you guys help me choose laptop for work (excel, webpages) and for home use?

Lenovo ThinkPad T14S Gen 2I i5-1135G7 8GB 256GB SSD 1920x1080 ~550 USD (can change it to 16 GB)

Dell Latitude 7410 i7-10610U 16GB 1TB 1920x1080 ~440 USD

Both are from 2020/2021.

My priorities are: 4-5h battery work, loud speakers, good brigtheness of the screen, and solid case.
I heard Dell tned to overheat and work loudly. In T14s I don't like the poor use of space at the bottom of the screen, a mean a big unused space.

(UK) Touchscreen laptop for handwritten and typed note-taking, flexible keyboard.

Hi, my current laptop's battery doesn't hold charge. I currently take notes (I like to hand-write usually) on my Samsung S6 Lite but it is awful. I struggle to open up powerpoints as it is a tablet and write on them, and samsung notes is very difficult to open up on a computer and view there. Organising notes is also difficult, I'd prefer a windows-style file explorer where I can use a mouse to browse.

- I'm looking for a laptop that has a touchscreen where I can use a pen to handwrite. I want to be able to open up powerpoints, pdfs, word documents and hand write notes on them and type as well.

- Ideally having the option to bend back a keyboard so I don't have to write over it would be good. A tablet/laptop merge essentially but that runs windows? It doesn't need to have high specs - I have a good gaming PC!

- Preferably nothing more than £300-£400, but willing to go a little up if it really meets the criteria and there's no good alternatives.

- Not a massive screen, my tablet is 10.4 inches is fine. I have a small backpack I prefer to take to my classes - it cannot fit anything much bigger than 10.4, maybe up to a couple of inches more. But I am aware that could well be too small am open to a larger screen (I have more backpacks) just not my first choice.

- Open to refurbs providing battery life is good.

Thanks :)

Could you guys help me pick up a good mid-range VFM gaming laptop out of the three?

My plan is to buy a powerful laptop with normal screen. And pair it with 2k 240hz display monitor for 1440p gaming.

My options are:

  1. Lenovo LOQ 15IRX9 83DV00BEIN

(14th Gen Core i7 14700HX/ 16GB/ 1TB SSD/ Win11/ 8GB RTX 4060) -1,26,490 INR

  1. Lenovo LOQ 15IRX9 83DV00B7IN

(13th Gen Core i7 13650HX/ 16GB/ 1TB SSD/ Win11/ 8GB RTX 4060) -1,09,990 INR

  1. MSI Katana 15 B13VGK-2009IN

(13th Gen Core i7 13700H/ 16GB/ 1TB SSD/ Win11 Home/ 8GB RTX 4070) -1,22,749 INR

Option 1 has better CPU but is more money worth it? Option 2 is Budget. but will i face any regret on wanting of more performance? Option 3 has better GPU but heard about msi's unreliability issues.

What should I go for? Which is inline with my goals?

Acer Aspire 5 Notebook | A515-58M for 650€ should I buy it?

Hi I am looking for a pc for myself to use at the university. I am an engineering student and I use laptop to take notes on obsidian or for mathlab/comsol/excel/imagej/qualX. I am not looking for the best high performance pc or for playing heavy games (if I can play Rocket League at low setting also on this pc it's good to me). 650€ it's a limited time offer.

The specs are:

  • Windows 11 Home
  • Processore Intel® Core™ i7-1355U Deca-core 1,70 GHz
  • 39,6 cm (15,6") Full HD (1920 x 1080) 16:9 IPS
  • 16 GB, LPDDR5
  • 512 GB SSD
  • Intel® Iris® Xe Graphics
  • 65 W

My priority for a pc is: battery life, great performance and light weight (but I have a limited budget of max 800€)

My question is: Should I wait for black friday or this pc is yet a good opportunity.

Sorry for my not perfect english

US $500

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

$500

Are you open to refurbs/used?

Yes

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Performance, Build Quality, Battery Life, Form Factor

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Not at all

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

N/A

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Clip Studio Paint
Minecraft

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

I want to be able to play a wide variety of Minecraft modpacks with freinds, and if it runs at 40 with minimal settings, i'll be happy

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

A fair amount of USB Slots, as I use a fair ammout of flash drives

What would be a good budget gaming laptop from 600 up to 650?

I thought of getting a pc but then i realised it would be pretty cozy to have a laptop that i could also lay in bed with and watch netflix. Do you have any recomendations?

Traditional laptop Vs 360° laptop

If I were to buy either type of laptop with the exact same components, same build quality, same longevity etc. What would the price difference be. Specifically how much would a £600/£800 traditional laptop cost in a 360° form.

If it matters I'm looking into productivity laptop for uni and would prefer to take notes using a digital pen if it isn't too expensive

Laptop for Computer Science and Software Engineering

I'm buying in Italy with a budget of upwards of €2.500, but I could also look at buying in Sweden with a budget of 30 000:- (or maybe have it delivered in the Netherlands and pick it up there?). If I can spend less for good performance for what I need I'd like that of course.

With my main rig I do pretty power intensive things with machine learning and graphics programming, but since I'm getting the laptop for school primarily I'm actually willing to compromise for a decent iGPU. I would like a good CPU though, and I prefer AMD but anything that's not ARM is fine.

The screen should be around 15" and at least 120hz. I don't care much about nits, touch or anything else. It'd be better if the keyboard had a numpad, and while backlighting is lovely I prefer no RGB as it's distracting.

I don't care about the weight, although it being slim is a plus.

I have some non-negotiables, though:

I need at least 32GB of RAM. If there's less RAM, I need it to not be soldered as I would be upgrading it in that case. I believe storage is pretty much never not upgradeable, but at least 1TB of space is preferable, with a minimum of 512GB. The keyboard should be either English US or English EU, and the battery should last at least 5 hours when doing office tasks (in the rare case where I am forced to do computationally intensive tasks, I will have it plugged into an outlet). One of the most important things for me is the absence of an NPU or any support for something like Copilot+. If a laptop has everything I need but also an NPU, I will not get it. I'd honestly prefer getting a Toshiba Satellite laptop at that point.

TL;DR:

  • 14~16" screen with at least 120hz
  • US or international keyboard (available for purchase in Italy, Sweden or at most in the Netherlands), backlighting is optional but no RGB would be best
  • iGPU is fine as long as it's pretty good
  • AMD CPU preferred, no ARM, mid-high tier
  • No NPU, no Copilot+
  • If not soldered, 16GB of RAM. If soldered, 32GB of RAM
  • Min. 512GB of storage, 1TB preferred

I have some laptops in mind, but some of them have caveats and I'm looking for more expert opinions. I'm willing to compromise a lot for the safe of cost-effectiveness
