I just moved here and was looking to get into the dating scene but there’s only like 3 people nearby on tinder. What are some tips?
I have lived in silver city since I turned 16, I'm 55 years old now. I moved into city limits 3 years ago w my little jack Russell mix. Having survived ABUSIVE relationship w a local HURLEY MAN and repulsive gangster action like my stealing cars and robbing my apartments I never involved the POLICE because that's a whole other ball game that's just as criminal. My son ran away from here at age of 15 due to his friends turning wanna be gangsters into cheap thug reality. With that being said I live alone. I don't own a car I never will in this county I walk!!!!!!!! All I claim is my young dog who is very spirited, like me. She has a knack of disliking UNCOOL humans and will turn tazmania on a dime. When I moved into new place after homelessness it was challenging teaching her boundaries, but with help from neighbors and continually walking on leashes she began to learn it and likes it. Human error is life. But according to the Animal Control officer you better not make a single mistake w your dog or you will be in court for the FIRST OFFENSE 3 TIMES OVER!!!! THEY will provide a lawyer that doesn't believe you or feel you have an honest testimony and expects you to LET THEM KILL YOUR DOG!!!!!
ITS SADISTIC!!! INHUMANE!!! AND brought to you by Silver city's FINEST!!!!
Where can I buy some basics online and have them delivered to SC?
Moving there, would like to have at least a bed when I arrive!
Wife and I are thinking about relocating to Silver with the kiddos in the future. Currently located about an hour and half away in AZ. Are there any particular areas to avoid when looking for houses/land? Similarly, are there areas that we should be looking at more than others. Any input appreciated. Thanks!
Moving to Silver first week November. Coming with nothing except some clothes, instruments, small stuff Looking for used furniture, cooking utensils, other basic home stuff.
I am going to just lay it all out here. You are free to respond freely. Both positive and critical comments can tell us what we are hoping to glean.
I am a retired college professor from California. For the last ten years my European husband and I have lived on a Caribbean beach. Our place is so isolated we sometimes live for weeks without seeing anyone outside our small staff. We are not unhappy but the record breaking summer heat is a bit much and if I never see another blood sucking insect, then, Happy Days!
We are seriously considering buying a summer place in a historic neighborhood of Silver City. The high desert, pinyon-juniper covered mountains have always attracted me and I know what to expect weather wise. It can get hot and sultry in the summer, however, we know that the high desert heat is a cake walk compared to the steamy tropics.
A big personal consideration is that I am very much a plant enthusiast (geek). I especially geek out with desert flora and have had gardens in varying high desert environments. Selfishly, I want to live somewhere to indulge my horticultural passion.
We are convinced that a smallish, walkable town is where we want to be. Walking to restaurants and to the Episcopal church on Sundays sounds perfect. We want to buy a historic home with some character and make that home and its garden as beautiful as possible. We would need a bit of land both to landscape and safely charge and store the EV. A garage would be preferable but we fully realize that space is often limited in the historic districts.
I see myself taking long, exploratory walks and walking to a gym. Almost daily, these walks would culminate in meeting at a restaurant for lunch. Neither of us pine for a nightlife and we are too old for interest in any gay scene. We envision hosting occasional dinner parties. I would volunteer for the native plant society and/or a historical organization. I might attend adult classes at the church or the university. We both are content with quiet evenings reading or just watching Netflix.
I am toward the left end of any philosophical, religious or political spectrum. I align with Bernie Saunders but vote Democratic only as the least disappointing of the two viable disappointments. My husband can’t vote but generally sees issues similarly.
We have concerns that Silver City’s isolation may replicate some of the same issues we face on a Caribbean island. For example, are there reliable, quality construction, landscape and decorator professionals? How likely are we to find a housekeeper or a cook? Of paramount importance to me, are there garden centers where I can order native plants? Hopefully, these nurseries offer quality soil additives and knowledgeable advice.
We can’t help but wonder if Silver City may be declining? We have noted that downtown restaurants have closed and there are a lot of empty storefronts. Surrounding desert towns definitely show serious decline.
Now that I have explained ourselves in detail, what do you think? Would we fit in and enjoy Silver City summers?

Recently made the move to SC for school, doing forest and wildlife so as you can imagine i’m not huge in the party crowd. Been going fishing and hiking and have had plenty of good interactions but having a tough time actually making friends. Had a spell of bad luck right away in my move and it’s made being away from home that much harder, I don’t need charity or sympathy but a fishing buddy or somebody to hop on the game with would be nice. if y’all got any suggestions i’d appreciate it.
Hi!
This is a very odd request, but I’m trying to find some information about a compound/ranch that is up on turtle mountain. I’ve been hearing some scary things about the people up there and wondered if anybody knew anything?
Thank you a million in advance!
Have opportunity to move to beautiful land 2 miles from town. I’m a psychotherapist who charges little and have 30 years of private practice under my belt. There seem to be differing opinions about weather people will come out there for treatment in spite of the shortage of therapists in Silver. Anybody want to chime in: would you travel 2 miles out?
Obvious throwaway so people don't recognize me. I and my friends want to hang out, but what are lgbtq+ welcome areas in grant county?
We will be visiting Silver City in a couple weeks. Normally we fly into El Paso and then rent a car. However, this visit will likely be extended and it would be too costly and unnecessary as we will have a vehicle to use in town. We are visiting an ailing family member and do not want to add stress by asking for an airport pick-up from anyone. Any recommendations for shuttles or other services running between Silver and El Paso? TIA
Yeah the crime is high, I get that.
But the people are so nice. It's got everything that you need, and a thriving arts scene. There's just enough good food. I love the tranquilbuzz coffee shop, even after it's moved. Hiking up Gomez Peak on a beautiful fall day when all the leaves are whirling around in the wind. Listening to the cottonwood leaves flutter on the big ditch creek path. Watching out for the speed traps as you drive through Bayard... I have so many good memories with my grandpa out in the Burro mountains. It's at the base of the coolest national forest in the whole USA, with so much history and so much solitude that it's impossible to beat. Plus, all those hot springs!? Cmon. I probably had the best camping trip of my life taking my dad up to Black Canyon Creek to catch some Gila trout a few years ago.
I worked a couple of summers nearby as a kid and even going into my mid 30s, all I want to do is pack up everything and move to Silver. To participate in living in the small city that draws me back every couple of years for vacation, no matter where I live.
Maybe one day I'll be able to vote on something for the town, as a resident. Or go make some BBQ and serve it as a trail stop for some CDT hikers or GDMBR riders.
What makes you love the place you live?

I am considering moving to Silver City, but I travel a few times per year. I see there is an airline that services Silver City. Has anyone here ever flown with them? Whats it like? Whats the parking situation at Grant County airport?
Let me start with this: Im retiring. I can’t afford to stay where I am on a fixed income.
After much research New Mexico looks like the place that checks the most boxes.
Because of circumstances I can’t control I can’t visit before I move So have to make a decision based on virtual tours. I get a good sense of the homes that way
But of course without visiting I lack the most important info: how does it feel? I’d love to go visit first and wander around for a few weeks or months but🤷♀️
The people on this have sub have been very helpful.
I’m down to 2 houses.
a big shiny modern house in Las Cruces with great views, smallish outdoor area and more accessible health care, public transit etc or
A smaller older but very nice house house in Silver with the most amazing garden. I can imagine spending most of my time reading, writing, playing music, or just relaxing in that garden.
Right now the heat in Las Cruces is my biggest worry. I know it’s a heat wave right now, but some people say they left because of the heat that’s normal for LC. M
I’ve never been a fan of hot. Dry heat is way more tolerable, but when it gets 90-110? I’m not happy even in dry heat. Don’t mind cold. Have heard about wind season: if I remember right it’s worse in Cruces than SC?
One of my concerns about Silver is the influx of right wing Texans. How much influence are they having on the overall political/social aspects there?
Is there any left wing activism in SC or is everyone too laid back for that?
I’m not a visual artist, I write and play music. When people say artsy they seem to think painting, pottery, etc.
Is there a scene for poets and musicians?
As a single retired woman will I have opportunities to make friends or will everybody be coupled up or otherwise unavailable to hang?
Is there a good dipensary and will other elderly potheads get high with me?
Which will be easier to find friends in, LC or Silver?
I know nobody can predict for me where I’ll be happiest. I’m aware of what a big gamble I’m taking.
But any insight will be appreciated. Don’t yell at me though I’m stressed enough.
This sub is so sparsely populated. Is that because people are more active on FB or maybe another site online? Not criticism, just curious.
Just a weekend in SC. Recommendations on upscale restaurants for the family?
I know how much people hate transplants but I’m leaving my insanely gentrified city where I can no longer afford groceries or anything else.
Hate realtors. They benefit from and support gentrification. I always feel like I’m being hustled.
But it seems like buyer’s agents are a bit more trustworthy (maybe?).
Looking for recommendations
Not sure if this is the right place to ask this question, but here goes. I stopped in Silver City for dinner in the fall 1999 (on my way up to Gila Cliffs NM). I am trying to remember the name of the restaurant which was located on Hwy 180 E (coming up from Deming). There are two places that no longer exist, one was Caballero Steakhouse, the other was Double Eagle Saloon. I'm thinking the place I ate was the Double Eagle (now a sushi place). Does anyone know the history/cuisine of these two places. By the way I've been back to SC a couple of times, still a very unique town. TIA.
If you have a parrot in SC what do you do about vet care?
We are planning a trip to see the cliff dwellings and are torn as to where to stay.
Seeing it’s my anniversary I really don’t want to cook so I think cabins may not be the solution.
Can you recommend a nice hotel and good restaurants and other points of interest.
We are coming from the Ruidoso area.
