So frustrated that the Fafsa award package still isn't out. My son leaves for Kelly Mine Camp 2 weeks from today! They keep extending when it will be available....I have no idea how much school is going to cost me🤦‍♀️

Is NMT worth it?

Hi!! I’m a girl & planning to go to NMT next year to get a degree in petroleum & natural gas. I’m tied between that & population health at UNM, so I just wanted to come on here & see if tech is a good school to go to, especially for that field. Any advise is greatly appreciated:)

NMT Torres Hall

Hi there! Anyone either going or is a recent graduate at NMT? My son was placed in Torres Hall. How is the social life in that building and is it decent (I know it's a small campus and town)? Any advice regarding the college for an upcoming freshman? He starts in August and going for electrical engineering.

Help choosing a school

Hello, I'm looking to major in Mechanical Engineering and now I'm trying to find a "good" college. I have enough money saved to attend NMT. The other schools that I'm considering my parents will need to take loans to help pay which is about $40K.

TAship

Received admission offer to NMT math ms program. Unfortunately i wasnt offered TAship in the first round of offers. Won’t be able to fund my graduate studies without TAship. How likely is it that I’ll be offered funding and TAship some time later?

Opinions on NMT?

Hey everyone,

I just submitted my transcripts today and I wanted some opinions on NMT.

I am from Los Angeles, California and I know Socorro is incredibly small. I do have a car though, so I can drive to Albuquerque.

I will be majoring in electrical engineering, though I will probably switch to mechanical if I'm accepted.

I'm wondering if you think I will fit in. I am definitely a social person, and I like sports (football and basketball). I dirt bike, snowboard, camp, etc. I also want to get into hunting if I go here.

I definitely do like parties, and I heard there really isn't a lot of them here. I was really drawn to this school because of the ERMC as well as it's connections to national labs in New Mexico.

Other schools I applied to are CU Boulder, UCF, UTK, Auburn, Oregon State, and NCSU.

Last question. Are there any known basketball courts in Socorro?

Are they really segregating students by race

Hey everyone,

Just applied here last night as a transfer for EE. I read today that last year they were trying to implement some segregation by race, gender and major.

Is this true? I don’t think I will go here if that’s the case.

Thank you!

Should I start with intro to computer science or introduction to programming ?

Hi all,

I’m an incoming freshman for the 2023 fall semester and I’m wondering if I should start out with intro to computer science (101) or introduction to programming (113). I took AP computer science principles my sophomore year of high school and scored a 4 on the exam which gives me possible credit for 101, however I’m still waiting on my calculus results to see if I can get into the co-requisite. Is it worth it to go straight into 113 if I can or would it be too much of a learning curve without 101.

For reference, i took AP computer science principles through Code.org which covers things such as variables and basic data types like arrays as well as functions. The internet and representation of data was covered as well, with a sort of light section on encryption and compression.

I would appreciate any perspective y’all could offer, thank you for your time !

Placed Into Algebra, is it even worth going to tech?

Title My test scores placed me into algebra, and I have been wanting to go to tech but I don't know if it is even worth it, since I need to do 4 classes in order to finally get into calculus 2. And since i need calc 2 for almost every cs class. Is it even worth it?

President Wells Leaving?

Hey, I am somewhat new on campus, and I don't follow what's going on with the administration changes. Is (former) President Wells really sick, or did the board of regents fire him? And why is President Lopez back? I heard he left on bad terms 7 years ago. Some one who's been here longer please explain!

CS at NMT/prospective student

I am planning to apply to NMT.

  1. What is the CS dept like? Other posts imply it is hard due to instruction - is that the case?

  2. Did your AP credits help you place out of anything in CS? Is this recommended, or is it better to take the courses because the courses cover a lot more than the AP? I mean generally it's supposed to be good to use AP credits but just wondering if it's in your major. Do you recommend taking the courses just for the experience of a college class?

  3. Looking at the AP credit chart now, if I get a 4-5 on AP CS A, does that mean I would still need to take CSE 101? https://www.nmt.edu/registrar/AP%20NMT%20%2021-22%20Policies%20%204.1.21.pdf (My school doesn't offer AP CS Principles. I guess I could take it on my own but thought I better ask. I do have a lot of programming experience prob like a lot of people but of course most outside of school.)

  4. Are there math placement tests or placement tests in other subjects? I will have Calc BC done, also courses in multivariable and linear by graduation. Not sure if anything besides BC helps for placement, though. Does anyone know if there is a way for high school multivariable or linear algebra credit to count towards graduation credit for NMT? Would you recommend taking Math 1510 and/or Math 1520 even if you took BC and had 4 or 5?

  5. School website implies research opps for undergrad are available. Is that your experience in CS?

  6. Graduating in 4 vs 5 years has also come up in other threads. I would really like to finish in 4 years. Is there a way to plan ahead to aim for 4 years? Or does everyone just have to do 5 years?

Really appreciate any other insights.
