Anyone else experiencing a strange low-frequency hum in Castlerea?

Hey everyone,

I’ve been living in Castlerea for a little while now, and recently, I’ve been noticing this strange low-frequency hum, especially at night. It’s a constant, low-pitched sound that seems to have no obvious source. It’s really noticeable on the second floor of my house and gets pretty annoying, to the point where it’s hard to sleep.

I’ve tried turning off all electronics and appliances, but the hum persists. It’s almost like a vibrating, wave-like sound. I’m wondering if it could be something external like a power transformer, underground pipes, or maybe even something related to the weather or wind patterns?

Has anyone else in Castlerea noticed this? If so, do you have any idea what it could be or how to deal with it? It’s starting to affect my sleep, and I’d really appreciate any advice or if someone can confirm they’re hearing it too.

I can hear this noise right now; it’s very strong and puts pressure on my head, and at night it becomes absolutely unbearable. I have no idea where it’s coming from. It’s impossible to sleep because when you lie down on the pillow, it feels like it’s conducting the sound—it's just awful. I can even hear it through my earphones when I’m on a call. Please, figure out where this hum is coming from or where I can report it.

Maybe those are prison generators or that water supply on the left?

Is Castlerea a safe place to live?

Hi, I am looking for house to buy with my fiance and we came a cross Castlerea the prices of houses are low and "affordable" for us. I've been wondering why is that? Is it safe town to live? Does the prison has any impact on your daily life in Castlerea?

Hi, I've recently picked up road cycling and was wondering if anyone knew about cycling clubs based in Roscommon?

Edit: Any clubs near Roscommon Town? I live really close to town.

Homeless Man

Hi all I don’t visit Roscommon town much but I seen a guy outside Aldi today. Maybe he’s a regular here, I’m just wondering if anyone knew his story? He looks to be a non national, had a black beanie type hat on and tracksuit bottoms/zip up top. I regularly offer help to homeless people but today I was in such a hurry I didn’t have time to chat to him. Thanks in advance.

Carpool?

Hi there

We recently moved to Tulsk and my fiancé is finding it impossible to get a job due to the lack of busses. Only hours he could do in Roscommon are 9-5 as the first bus is around 8 and the last is 5:30.

Does anybody know of any carpools or anything like that? A taxi is €35+ each way and his entire wage would be gone on transport if he went down that route.

Housing crisis?

I know that there is a housing crisis going on, but I'm hearing mixed things about quieter counties like Roscommon and Leitrim. Is it hard to find rentals? Specifically in Boyle? Or houses to buy?

Car stickers and the like

Hi there, I’m looking for items like a car sticker of the Roscommon county badge, postcards, GAA T-shirt, this type of thing. Does anyone know a shop where I could go and get them in Roscommon? Haven’t found anywhere so far! Thank you

Rent in Castlerea

Hello everyone I’m looking for a room to rent in Castlerea starting from the beginning of September for 48 weeks. I'm an 18 year old female, and very tidy. I’m starting a course, and though I live just 45 minutes away, the early train and bus schedules don't align well with my needs.

I’ll need the room from Sunday evenings to Friday mornings, as I plan to head home for the weekends. I'm responsible and organized, making sure to keep my living space clean and peaceful.

If you have any leads or available rooms, please let me know.

Thank you!

Night and day festival

How are we doing? Thinking of booking tickets to Night and Day festival ? Anyone been? I'm liking the line up. If we go we'll probably stay in Boyle or Carrick on Shannon. Would it be easy to and get from either of those towns. Don't really want to drive to there from our accommodation. Thanks

Leitrim or Roscommon?

I know, lots of you will say neither. But hear me out. We are living in a very rural African country so literally anywhere else will feel bustling and big to us. We want to move because we want our children to be able to experience a bit more than what is available to us here (which is two supermarkets and a clothing store). But we are not looking for big city excitement. We are small town people, looking for a quiet place to settle down. Just... a place where our kids can have friends and maybe sign up for clubs to do activities. Chess or karate or something like that.

We've had our hearts set on Leitrim. But now I'm seeing how much cheaper the property in Roscommon is. Is there a reason for this? Is Roscommon awful, and if so, why? Or is it just rural and quiet, without a lot of job opportunities? (This wouldn't be a problem for us, we are self-employed and work remotely.)

So please help me out: Roscommon or Leitrim? Or does it not matter? Our main priority is giving our young boys a safe, happy childhood where they can get on their bikes to visit friends and go to small but nice schools.

Fitness

I sit at a desk all day for work and my fitness has really gone down hill. I'm looking for some kind of cheap gym or fitness classes that people would recommend. Can't afford anything fancy as im desperately trying to save at the moment. I googled it but so much stuff comes up and most of it doesn't show prices so I'd love to get some recommendations. Thanks!

See which areas of Roscommon have the most places registered with the Residential Tenancies Board/Government

https://www.howmuchrent.com/pages/rtb_graphs?county=Roscommon

I have mapped out 250,000 plus properties that have registered with the government/RTB. It provides insights into where people rent, hence I have done a breakdown per county and nationwide.
Each County heatmap(top map), can be zoomed down, to see the actual RTB property registered.

Distribution of Bedrooms

Please share with your friends, and tell them about Howmuchrent.com, which I built for Rental Transparency.

See where Landlords registered their tenants. 256559 Properties Registered with the Residential Tenancies Board mapped out + number of bedrooms.

As part of my drive for Rental Transparency in Ireland, I mapped all the properties registered with the RTB: https://www.howmuchrent.com/r/rtb\_verified . It cost me over 1000 Euro to do this, and I hope you find it useful. This gives the first insight into where people are registered to rent in Ireland. Also, you can see which landlords have not registered their tenants.
Any media outlets that might be interested in this story?
Every Renter has a story to tell about their place. Add your story to HowMuchRent.com. Read reviews tenants left of their place, and past prices charged for properties.

PS
From https://www.rtb.ie/registration-and-compliance/registrations/registering-your-tenancy/how-to-register
Taking effect from 04 April 2022, a landlord is obliged to apply to the Residential Tenancies Board (RTB) to register a tenancy - or a licence in Student Specific Accommodation (SSA) - within 1 month of its commencement date and every year after this, on the anniversary of the date the tenancy began, for so long as the tenancy/SSA licence exists.

Couple of questions!

Hello!!

So I’m from Dublin, born and raised. I moved to Brighton, England 4 years ago but I’m finally moving home in July!

We’re moving to Tulsk, Roscommon instead, my parents just got a house there so we’re going to move back in with them and then buy our own house there when the time comes.

I was just wondering if anybody had any recommendations for good local restaurants, pubs, clubs etc. Not clubs as in nightclubs but say for hiking, gardening etc.

My fiancé is from England and he’s so excited to leave city life and settle down in the country. Any recommendations for him to fully experience Irish culture for what it is?

Go raibh maith agat!❤️
