What's your preferred hardware stack?

My mac has following specs: 2,6 GHz 6-Core Intel Core i7, AMD Radeon Pro 5300M 4 GB, Intel UHD Graphics 630 1536 MB, 16 GB 2667 MHz DDR4. I'm doing a lot of design work (Figma, Framer..). When buying a mac in 2024, which version would you go for?

Or: what are options to look into beyond Apple?

Is product design a generally high paying job? Is it quite repetitive?

Thanks :)

Could you do furniture design with a product design Uni course?

Like, would a furniture design company accept you? Or perhaps later in life you'd like to design furniture independently in your own buisness

UK - do you need high GCSEs to get onto a product/industrial design Uni course?

Asking as a Year 11 :) Just to check cuz I on the courses Ive looked at, noone is really looking for high grades (like in medicine). But I imagine its competitive and GCSE grades come into account.

Also, whats the difference between product and industrial?

This website has helped push past the creative block of creating my design portfolio

I found this website and I thought I should share, it has a lot of high quality design portfolio from top designers. It really helped me with inspiration to finish up my own design portfolio. Lots of great case studies and visual design styles to get inspiration. The website is called: Foleo

Would like to know if there any other resources that people use to get inspired when creating their portfolio.

New Product Survey: Digital Detox Kit

Hi all, developing a new product for a project. It's a digital detox kit that helps you manage screen time and reduce stress. It comes with mindfulness exercises, offline entertainment options, and even a basic non-touch phone for important calls. Plus, it includes a lockbox for your phone, so you can take a break from the digital world whenever you need to. Could you help me out by taking this 2 minute survey to share your thoughts? Thanks! Adding personality/identity to my UI designs?

I haven’t worked for over a year and I’m just getting back into designing specifically UI design. I’ll be working on a few personal projects to beef up my currently defunct/non-existent portfolio.

My work has always been kind of functional but lacking personality. I think I’m missing the brand/visual identity stuff.

I know it’s not something I can’t just tack on to what I’m doing currently, but where do I start? Do I need to go down the whole brand identity rabbit hole and start from scratch?

Are there any good book/courses/resources out there to get me started? Or any advice?

U.S or Europe for Product design degree?

I was accepted to study product design (bachelor) at two universities: Otis College of Art and Design(California) and Willem de Kooning Academy (Netherlands).

At Otis, I would enroll in their toy design major, which is a huge interest of mine and the school is known for it.

I need to decide between the U.S and Europe, taking into account my European citizenship, which would make it easier to secure jobs and stay In the country long-term.

I don't know if Willem de Kooning is as good as Otis, and I worry about job opportunities in Europe in the product design area (or even toy design, hopefully).

Any advice would be appreciated.

Product Validation Outreach Challenges - Facebook

I'm reaching out to people on Facebook, to find people to try my product. They aren't responding. I wonder if Facebook isn't showing them my messages.

Essentially what I did was found Facebook posts, where people talked about the product category, and then I DMed them, saying I saw they used the product category and would appreciate some recommendations. I tried to keep the messages short, to not look like SPAM. I only have had one person even respond.

Any tips? Has anyone had any success approaching people online, to get their feedback? What worked? How did you do it?

A-Level PD Coursework Help

Hi everyone! I'm doing the write-up for my A-Level Coursework, but i need help naming one of the joints I've used as I've literally been looking online for 10 minutes. It's a circular lid that twists on off, I've done my best to draw it out and I've added the photos, if anyone knows i'd be very appreciative!

The top image is what the actual lid goes into and the bottom is a side profile to shows how it fits in, I hope this is easy to understand, this project has sent me slightly insane

How is the job market for mid-weight Product Designers (~3y.o.e.) in London right now?

Is it as bad as they say?

Better, more legit product reviews?

Hey everyone, recently I was reading reviews for a product on Amazon. I couldn’t help but notice that the reviews seemed as if they were faked. How do you think sites like Amazon or other e-commerce store fronts could better enforce the legitimacy and authenticity of their product reviews?

Defining Requirements (back to basics)

Ok, so I'm wondering how we do this and if some better models could be used.

Often I go into a job and it has already been decided what it is we are working on. But i wonder to myself how it could be done better.

Is there a well-known process for going from the idea (and I don't mean ideation), to defined scope, design (mapping out and testing) and then implement?

I'm in a somewhat "back to basics" mood with this sort of question.

What are some paid subscriptions tools worth the investment?

I'm looking to level up my design workflow and explore paid subscriptions for the first time. I'm curious what tools you all find invaluable and give you the most ROI.

For those of you who use paid tools, what are your top recommendations? How have helped you become a more efficient and effective product designer?
