From Nov. 13-16th at The 1808 (2871 Cherokee St NW, Kennesaw, GA 30144)
Care Access is doing free health screenings of lipoprotein(a), a1c, kidney function, and they also give a $45 gift card for your time, given in person once you participate. It is a pretty quick sign up on their website. When I went to a prior one they did it was pretty seamless without much wait and at a nice venue. Worth the money and free lab results for anyone interested.
Great little spot for a tasty treat! So glad it's finally open!! Yum!
On Friday 11/8 from noon to two we have the Veteran Luncheon at the Ben Roberston Community Center. No ID or registration required, guests welcome.
The Kennesaw Holiday Market starts with a VIP Night (ticket required, $25 but includes snacks and two drinks) on Friday from 6 to 8 PM. It'll be open to the general public with no ticket required on Saturday from 10 AM to 4 PM. This will also be at Ben Robertson Community Center.
The Adult Speaker Series on Moonshine in Cobb will be at the Southern Museum from 1 to 2 PM. The speaker is included with admission to the museum. No samples will be provided unfortunately.
On Saturday, overlapping a bit, there will be the Concert Series at the Depot Park Ampitheater from 1:30 to 5:00 PM. It will feature G Clef and the Playlist and the Georgia Symphony Orchestra Jazz Ensemble. I don't know who will be playing first.
At Wheeler High School, also on the 9th, there will be a Family and Sensory Friendly Concert. The Sensory friendly performance is at 2 PM and the family concert at 4 PM. Includes a "musical petting zoo", by which I assume they mean they'll let you play with instruments. Tickets are $10.
You also have recurring events at the Smith-Gilbert Gardens like Dog Days and Imagination Station.
On Monday the 11th Acworth has an open Veteran's Day Celebration at Patriot’s Point in Cauble Park. Starts at 2 PM and has no tickets or admissions. Might be worth a stop.
Alternatively, Marietta has a Veterans Day Parade on the Marietta Square starting at 11 AM.
In the evening Woodstock has a Candlelight Ceremony on Monday at 6 p.m. in the Park at City Center. In the event you want something a little more somber to round out the holiday.
Seems busy, but that's just the stuff from the various city websites. Who knows what the churches and schools and clubs are up to.
I have a couple of area rugs that I need cleaned. Does anyone have a recommendation for cleaners?
TIA
Title says it all! I’m hoping to find a GYN that offers pain management for IUD placement in the area.
Does anyone know what else is going to be built next to those new apartments? I believe they will build a Lidl and I'm wondering if there's plans for anything else?
I mean seriously.
I was a poll worker yesterday, at Kennesaw First Baptist specifically, and halfway through the day some guys decided to set up audio equipment in the handicap parking. The pastor came by to ask us if we knew anything about it, and of course we didn't. Turns out whomever it was didn't get permission from the church to set up on church property and also didn't get permission from the county to be vetted and declared to not be campaigning.
The whole thing seems poorly thought out from the start.
Needless to say, the pastor was quite upset and trespassed them from the property before they fully set up. At the end of the night when we were physically delivering the votes to the county office we heard that there were several other voting locations that also had DJs show up unannounced.
They would have done a lot better doing the first/last days of early voting. Lines were short for us, the new digital voter certificates vastly sped up the process and most of the precinct voted early in any event.
So I'm finally moving out my folks house and wondering if this is normal for apartments in Cobb. All utilities except water will be under my name and my responsibility( I set them up myself) and as for the electric its cobb EMC. But the gas I'm told there is only one option (GNG) . After looking online I see that there are different marketers in ga with cheaper prices. Ex: Xoom Energy.
So tbh this whole thing is giving me a headache. From how i see it there is fixed and variable . Fixed seems like the better option. BUT my lease is only 11 months ... and some gas providers only have 12 month and up plans. Another thing that's confusing to me is that would an apartment (8 buildings) be resi or commercial?
Will I get fd over if I setup my plan over the phone vs online. Do I get those same rates listed online with no renting history ? Being this is my first "home" by myself
Also am I fd if I choose a fixed rate for the year since I'm getting gas in winter ?
Please help
If you vote at First Baptist come by and say Hi.
The first thing they covered is that the E-Mail of public comments is ending. They did it for Covid and they just don't get enough comments regularly enough for it to make sense keeping staff on.
The thing I was most interested in wasn't actually heard. The Churros Steakhouse ("the Meat Area") people withdrew their appeal for a liquor license. It was their final appeal, but they can apply for a new one in 2025 anyways. Supposedly they just missed the renewal and then when the officer explained the rules the person there (who had English as a second language) understood "off site" as "out of sight" so they got dinged for still having booze in the building in storage. Seems like a simple error, but they also absolutely did the thing. Of course, all of that is second hand so a grain of salt is warranted. I hope things go better for The Meat Area. Appeal denied 0-5.
The Hi and Hello Mart folks were there for their liquor license. A bunch of pleasant middle aged Indian gentleman. They noted that the rain was good for the mint they were growing, if they get a couple days off good sun in the next week. They had everything in order so they got approved 5-0.
Cantrell Crossing tried giving the city 1.5 acres of land. Staff said no. It wouldn't connect to anything. It would cost the city far more to maintain than it could get. The street also comes with the 50ft right of way, which basically amounts to everyone's front yards, too. Councilman Ferris asked what the plan was originally. Staff explained that while the original plat noted that the street was "public" the city never had any intention to take the land, and more recently updated the rules to make such attempted "donations" impossible, but this one was grandfathered. The city council voted 0-5, the developers (or the HOA) will remain responsible for maintenance and upkeep of the road in question.
History kid had a little election related stuff. For the 1888 election, both candidates had something to do with Kennesaw.
Benjamin Harrison was an officer in the 70th Indiana, which fought at Kennesaw Mountain. Harrison didn't, though. He got poison ivy so bad he was laid up in the hospital for the battle. He didn't have fond memories of Kennesaw.
Grover Cleveland was the first sitting president to visit Kennesaw. He stopped in the city and was guest of honor to a fireworks show at Kennesaw Mountain, but he didn't give much of speech. Turns out he'd developed a dislike for public speaking.
Cleveland went on to lose to Harrison, becoming the last sitting Democratic president to lose reelection until Carter in 1980, almost a century later. It's also the third time that the winner of the Electoral College vote lost the popular vote, and the last time until the 2000 election, more than a century later.
Now it's time for the roundup.
The city manager didn't have much to say, until Councilman Ferris pointed out the UGA beat Florida last weekend. Then the manager had quite a lot to say, actually.
Councilman Ferris wanted to talk about Taste of Kennesaw this last weekend. It was fun. It was busy. But even with the big screen playing college football it did clear out a bit around 3:30.
Councilman Gutierrez said that he ended up eating far too much at the Taste of Kennesaw. Such is the nature of such festivals, he supposes. Worth it, though.
Councilman Jones said that he couldn't make it to the Taste of Kennesaw, the wife was doing required training and going would require all hands. But he did appreciate the volunteers cleaning up the roadside, which made walks less stressful and more pleasant.
Councilors Orochena and Viars offered a joint statement of sorts about the upcoming town hall meeting on November 17th and the Ben Robertson Community Center. Cobb DOT is getting public comment about the plans to completely redo the intersection of McCollum and Old 41/US 41. It is very important that they pick the right plan, so mark your calendars and turn out.
The Mayor decided to pitch out a couple of things. If you're a Veteran they have a luncheon for you this weekend at the Ben Robertson Community Center. I hear it's a very good time, even though I haven't served myself. Also, they have the concert at the Depot Park Ampitheater starting just after at 1:30. If you're a fan of Symphony Orchestra Jazz Ensembles then you're in for a treat.
My brother is torn between the concert and the lecture on Cobb County Moonshining at the Museum. I am probably going to torn between the concert and football.
Though not a part of the LGBT community, I'm supportive of them and don't want to attend a church where others are alienated. I'm looking for a church in the Kennesaw/Acworth area, preferably no more than 30 minutes from the intersection of Hwy 41 and Acworth Due West Rd.
I grew up attending a small-town, Southern Baptist Church, so that lean is my preference, but I'm open to other churches, as well.
Any help for me?
(cross-posting on the Acworth page)
Looks like they'll be projecting the football games on an inflatable screen and have a kids area with inflatables. Could be a good time, traffic might be a mess though. It'll be closed all day, so expect heavier than usual on Cobb Parkway.
I noticed most Park entrances here have a gate on them. So I assume that they close the gate at a certain time and then if you stay in there when the gate is closed you going to get a ticket. I've been to some other gated parks and they actually try to herd people out 1 hour before the parking closes. It's a real pain in the bud for me because I'm coming in usually in the evening time and I just want to relax be able to hike and not think about timing everything. So I'm curious to know which parks are open late or which parks to the gates don't really close. It would be a shame if these parks are mostly set up for retired folks or people who don't work in the evening times. I thought Parks were for everybody but apparently not so much because some parts apparently closed like like a doctor's office. I'd really rather go for a walk inside of a park just to get away from cars. I thought that's one of the reasons we had them in the first place.
I've seen some of the national parks run by the national Park service like Gold Branch for example. I've been to other national parks other parts of the country and usually they don't close their Gates but I'm curious if it's the same way here.
Needing to replace 2 outer door frames with PVC doors frames and replace all my outer trim around windows and the top of the roof. Looking for any recommendations for local contractors that do that type of work in the Kennesaw/Acworth/Marietta area and have a good rep. Thanks!
Just a quick reminder.
While anyone can vote at the Ben Robertson Community Center or the North Cobb Senior Center from 7AM to 7PM today, tomorrow, or the day after, you won't be able to this weekend or election day. From November 2nd to 4th there won't be any voting available. And you will have to vote at your assigned precinct on election day. The State of Georgia doesn't allow you to pick any old polling location, they won't have the correct local races for you anyways.
If you have any questions about your registration status, want to know where your precinct is, or want to track your absentee ballot then you can do so on your My Voter Page. It can be found at MVP.SOS.GA.GOV
I’m excited to have officially cast my third Presidential vote since moving to Georgia in 2015!
As my wife and I were walking into the voting facility (Cobb County), a man, probably around 60, walked toward us and suddenly shouted at her, “You’re just like all the other Democrats… YOU’RE DEAD!”
We looked at each other, totally dumbfounded. “Did that really just happen?” Neither of us were dressed in a way that would give away our political leanings, so we were completely taken aback by the encounter.
I just wanted to share that with you all in case you see anything unusual when entering the polls. Please do not let anyone discourage you from voting or strong arm you into picking one candidate over the other. The future of our democracy is at stake. Please vote, and vote responsibly.
Councilors Orochena and Viars turned up in the same outfit and the mayor ribbed them over it. The change in season is beginning to result in a change of clothing.
The first thing up is the appeal for Churros Steakhouse's liquor license. There's "new information" but staff wouldn't say what it was, only "a presentation will be given next week". Mysterious. We will have to see.
The city put out a bid for a new bank as standard per regulation. The city received two bids. Staff recommended Cadence Bank's bid. The other bidder was Union Bank (Piedmont). I'm not familiar with either. Councilman Ferris asked how long it was since the city picked a bank. Staff noted that it's been six years, the contract usually runs for five but they had an extension in there. They decided to go along with Cadence Bank's offer.
The "Hi and Hello Mart" on Jiles, a convenience store in a shopping center unaffiliated with a gas station just went through the requirements for a liquor license. Looks like a new place in the same shopping center as Tacos Del Chavos and Grand Slam Pizza. Barring a major surprise they should be authorized to sell booze next week.
The city police are buying Taser 10s. Some 87 for $354K, in fact. The old ones are at the end of their expected service. Councilman Ferris asked if the purchase was under the state contract. The answer from staff was no. We're not getting the state rate, but they're the only valid supplier of tasers so there's not really much of a choice. The city can't afford to just shoot people, so the taser purchase is what it is.
Cantrell Crossing wants to give the city free land! Staff says no. It's a trap, the developer wants to donate streets to the city so the city has to resurface the roads. Staff points out that they'd be able to weedle about $900 out of the state but resurfacing would put the budget back $3400. Councilman Gutierrez noticed that the street being donated wasn't connected to public streets and asked why that was. Staff answered that it was the only bit of road that met the city's minimum standards, the rest couldn't be considered 'road' by the city's code. Councilor Orochena asked if the nubs could be connected to the road behind, presumably thinking that a denser and more useful road network might be worth the price. Staff noted that the dead ends existed to allow the developer to put in a few more houses and weren't to a standard that would allow for anything more. It looks very unlikely that the city will take the 'free' land next week.
So, Parks and Rec needs to make some changes to the plan for "A DAY WITH SANTA" on December 7th. They'll need to close more roads for longer than initially though. Setup begins at 10AM with a parade from 2-3PM and the event will end with a tree lighting at 6PM. Much of downtown will be closed for the event and parade so be aware.
That was all the business so it's down to the roundup.
The city manager attended several events over the weekend and found it very fun. The cemetery tour was entertaining and enlightening. The Candy Crawl was the biggest event of its kind yet. He was pleasantly surprised by the turnout, but he thinks the carnival games could have used better prizes. 871 people ran the 5K, which is much better than the 250 regional average. (Suck it Woodstock and Canton). Taste of Kennesaw is coming up this weekend.
Councilman Ferris volunteered to give cemetery tours on 3 different days. Every year people taking the tour tell him they were just discovering the place and were surprised by how pretty it was and how good the stories were. The candy crawl had the most strollers he's ever seen in one place. And congrats to Kennesaw State and their first FBS win.
Councilman Gutierrez said that he missed the candy crawl and now feels like he missed out. The pictures of the event looked like fun. He also wanted to point out that the election is only a week away. Already 3 million early votes have been cast and early voting will continue until Friday.
Councilor Orochena said that she gave out 600 pieces of candy at the event, and that her costume was hot. Fortunately, it was also inflatable so the air flow helped.
Councilman Jones said that he was involved with the old medicine collection effort at the 5K. Don't leave old pills laying about the city has drives where they gather up expired drugs for proper disposal.
Councilor Viars wanted to thank Jill and Glenna of the Turquois Otter for organizing the Candy Crawl, they've done such a great job getting all that stuff together. Also the history kid's family who volunteered at four different city events over the weekend. The city should ben thankful to have such dedicated volunteers. (fixed Glenna's name)

So they thought it was a good idea close down multiple important roads for a running event? A 10 min drive to work turned into 40 for no good reason. Then you have cops sitting there doing NOTHING giving NO TYPE OF INSTRUCTIONS, I follow my gps and it’s another blocked off road, this is stupid
