This is a subreddit for fly anglers of any age and experience level, from any walk of life or lifestyle. If you pursue fish with fly tackle (or want to), you're welcome here. Some of us chase brook trout on bluelines with ultralight rods; others prefer streamers or dries or dynamic nymphing techniques. Many of us use double-handed rods for steelhead, have a chronic permit problem, or chase tarpon or even billfish on heavier gear. Read, research, query, contribute, brag - all are welcome here!

Going to be in Austin for work might take a road trip and fish the Guadalupe. Any good information/tips for someone from out of state?

Hey guys I am going to be in Austin for work and am probably just going to drive down there so I can go fish the Guadalupe. I keep seeing things about them stocking rainbows and even browns. How is the fishing? Is it worth bringing all my gear out there? I would like to know a little more before I drive 1000 miles

Gift ideas

Just to start I don’t fly fish. My father just got into it and I want to get him something that will help him a lot for Christmas. Or I was thinking something vintage to keep as a decoration in the house. Honestly any advice would be great!

Grandfathers fly rod Heddon #13

Just got into flyfishing this year, have the typical carbon flyrod 9' 5wt and billet aluminum cnc'd spool with some good fly line from cortland. I've known that my grandfather was very much into fishing during various times in his life and while I was helping move things around the garage I found this old Heddon #13 flyrod, no sign of a reel or line and the flyrod itself is in pretty bad condition, missing quite a few of the rod guides. This has a ton of sentimental value and if you all suggest that any light useage will result in more damage I'll probably just hang it up but I'm wondering if I could get this back to its original condition by someone who works on vintage bamboo rods, or just keep it as is and hang it up? Curious to your thoughts on getting it restored? https://photos.app.goo.gl/za6D2hbocF19pQt37

Punta Allen and Ascension Bay Guide Recommendations

Hi fellow fly fishers!

I’m looking at doing a DIY fly fishing trip to Punta Allen and Ascension Bay.

Can anyone recommend any guides that work independently?

I’ve been disappointed in the past when booking guides through lodges, so I’d like to do some research in advance and hand pick someone.

Any recommendations? Thanks in advance!

Gift idea: Wooden Curved Handle Net Recs

What's good fam - anyone know of some curved handle wooden nets they can recommend?

Looking for gift ideas, thought something hand-made or from a small shop/maker could be cool. Would prefer a net designed for the right hand (so curves to the left).

General idea: https://aventiksports.com/products/aventik-tenkara-curved-wooden-landing-net

Thanks!

Favorite fish of the year (mostly due to context)

I was diagnosed with Epilepsy this Spring and have been mostly unable to drive. In my state you're supposed to be seizure free for at least 3 months to be able to drive. I had 1 week between the first time I hit 3 months and my next seizure. This fish came from the one time I was able to drive myself up to a favorite stretch and spend all day fishing by myself. I've fished less this year than I ever have in my life, and dealing with a burdensome disease while not being able to safely access my pastime has been emotionally crushing. I've had to give up so much. But, this one above average cutbow and a great day of fishing keep me going in hopes that I'll wind up with effective medication and be able to do the things I love the most.

January 8th is my next 3 month line, and hopefully this time I'll stay seizure free for years to come.

Montana Lodges - Advice Needed

East coaster here - Looking to take my father to Montana on a trip over the summer and looking into a few lodges. Not sure we’ll be able to get another trip in the future, so budget is flexible. It’s more about finding the right place and enjoying some time together.

He’s getting older and doesn’t want to rough it , so I’m looking for somewhere that offers higher end accommodations - nice lodge, good food, good drink, great fishing. He will prefer a smaller lodge with a calm peaceful setting. Drift boat is preferred but easy hiking trips will be doable.

Looking into:

  1. Missouri Cliffs Lodge
  2. Madison River Lodge
  3. Healing Waters Lodge
  4. Madison Valley Ranch

This will be a once in a lifetime trip for us, again not sure if we’ll be able to make another one happen. Hoping to get some good insight. Thanks!

First fly rod choice

Hi, the website I'm looking to order from basically sells two different beginner rod outfits at an entry-level price point. They both come with a reel, weight forward floating line, and backing. Not only is it convenient, but also cheaper than getting things separately (on this website, the individual items all seem to be much higher-end than the rod outfits). In either case it would be a 5w and 9ft rod.
I can choose between:

Both are in the 250ish price range. There is another outfit for 400 (Primal Revel) and 450 (Orvis Clearwater), should I consider going up a price category, or are both first options going to be just fine for a beginner like me?

Lastly, if I get one of these kits, should I consider changing any thing out such as the fly line?

Thanks !

Fly Reel on Spinner Rod Combo?

Has anyone ever combined a Fly Reel on a spinner rod? My grandfather passed away in 2019, and left me a lot of his fishing poles.h”He had a fly reel on a 70’s Shakespear Wonder Glass Spinning rod. Should I remove the reel, and put a spinner reel on it and buy a new fly rod for the fly reel, or is this fish able?

Hot Creek, CA winter flies

Making a few short trips to Hot Creek soon. For those who have fished there in winter, what flies worked best? I’m reading small midges but anything specific?
