Managed to catch a beauty of a trout from a flooded river. Check it out from the link. English subtitles available!
Caught on a grasshopper fly, swivel is there because the tapered line was too thick for the hooks eye.
I have a vintage 60s fiberglass rod i love but i just had to use pliers, tape, and a rubber mallet to pull the ferrules apart because nothing else would. Want to know how to prevent this from happening again
Had a bozo moment on the river today, was trying to free a stuck fly on the river bed by whipping my rod, anyways in an attempt to save a $10 fly, I lost the top section of my Air2 rod, must have come a bit loose and when the fly broke off, the tip went into the river and see ya later, water was way too high and swift for me to chase it down.
Anyways, I love this rod, and talking to Winston today they said 90 days to get a replacement part, which is basically the season, have any other people experienced this timing? I'm resisting the urge to just go buy a new rod and sell one of them when I get the warranty part back, the rod with the missing piece is basically new, 3rd day out. Rattled as hell about it here, but if I hear someone else preaching calm (wait it out) or being a dummy (go buy a replacement) then maybe I'll feel better making a call.
Has anyone ever tried to over line a smaller reel? I only have 75 yards of backing as I primarily trout fish and prefer the look of the smaller reel so I’m wondering if anyone has tried this or has an opinion on this
Who makes a good beginner fly tying kit?
Gave my 2wt quite the workout! 😎
Why does everyone seem to have tiny nets? For years I ran the biggest one that the local fly shop had. My first trout over 3lbs didn't fit, but I was able to make it work. My first fish over 5lbs made me realize that if I was going to chase big fish I needed a big net to ethically land them.
I used a rubberized frabill folding net for a couple of years. It was adequate but just barely. It actually handled a trout over 10lbs but it was a bit sketchy. I've upgraded to a rubber boat net with a custom short handle. It clips to my pack and hangs almost down to my knees but I never feel under gunned on the big fish now.
Why do we as fly fishermen gravitate to nets that are inadequate for the biggest fish we hope to catch?
Our local Orvis is doing a free competition this month. Gave it a shot. Surprised how difficult these can be to eat.
I seem to struggle with the options I have on a creek as a newish fly fisherman
So do you guys…:
Find a nice fishy spot and try to “match the hatch”, trying different flies until you start getting hits or
Try to match the hatch and fish a large section of the stream. If you don’t get any takes, change your fly and try the different spots in that section again?
I always seem to lean towards option 2, but now I’m thinking option 1 might be the best bet
Or are neither of these something you do?
Help with lamson reel ID. What size is a lamson guru 1.5?
First time today. Nice cutthroat, glad I went all in on this.
I received a 550$ gift card from work and feel bogged down with all the options. I started last year and looking to have an even better this year. Currently I have the orvis encounter rod/reel combo 5wt, a trout net, extra tippet, a fly case, floatant, and clippers. Want to use the money wisely and not get a bunch of superfluous stuff. I'm looking at some new fly line both sinking and floating, maybe some waiters, maybe a reel upgrade. Any opinions are appreciated.
In northern michigan if that helps at all.
I have been doing some research on fly fishing the Coheco River. This weekend will be my first trip so I wanted to ask a couple questions.
What section(s) of the river I should target? Are there certain landmarks or bridges I should look out for? I don’t want to waste any daylight by fishing in the wrong areas. I have never been to Dover so I have no direction on where to go.
Also, any specific flies that you would recommend for this time of year? I have a varied assortment of flies in my box including:
Elk Hair Caddis
Any advice or helpful tips would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!
Only my second year fly fishing, so i’m still learning a ton about the sport and aquatic life and this little guy was a first for me. I never would have guessed a common shiner was such a cool fish! The spiky head and intense colors were a big surprise to me. I always think of shiners as the boring ones you get in the bait shop so it took a little searching to figure out what it was… Caught it along with some dace and a fall fish on a creek that runs from a minor river up into a marsh.
I’m almost done building a 10’ 4 weight rod for nymphing and roll casting. What’s your recommendation for a fly line?
I’m looking at a 10’ 7ips airflo polyleader to attach to my floating line on my 7wt. This would be used for ~20 inch bull trout in medium sized tribs in central Idaho. Going to be fishing some roughly size 4-6 streamers. Just wondering on whether to get the Trout (12lb core), or the Salmon/Steelhead (24lb core). Thanks!
Also, I just wanted to say thanks to all the people that have helped me on my other posts about this topic. Thanks again!
I’m very new to fly fishing (got a pflurger starter kit a week ago at the local Canadian tire on a whim) and I’ve been trying to go once a day sometimes twice and I’ve noticed that the tapered end of the leader is getting a little rough feeling. Is there a point where it needs to be replaced or just let it ride until it gives up the ghost?
Friends and I are going to CO. I got a month to practice casting and getting familiar with a few things. What’s a good beginner combo set with a hatch box for colorado? i wont have time to go to a local shop in CO.
Does anybody use these or have any idea how they work? I ordered a few and even after watching a YouTube video, I can’t figure out how to get the tubing back into the indicator for the life of me.
