This is a subreddit for fly anglers of any age and experience level, from any walk of life or lifestyle. If you pursue fish with fly tackle (or want to), you're welcome here. Some of us chase brook trout on bluelines with ultralight rods; others prefer streamers or dries or dynamic nymphing techniques. Many of us use double-handed rods for steelhead, have a chronic permit problem, or chase tarpon or even billfish on heavier gear. Read, research, query, contribute, brag - all are welcome here!

Fishing spots north island NZ

Hey guys newly moved to Auckland from northern Queensland Australia and have been trying to get into some fly fishing. Have an experienced background in all kinds of different fishing but never fly fishing so excited to give it a try. Have heard a lot about the Waikato, Rotorua and Taupo regions but just wondering if anyone has some more specific spots for recommendation as I’m looking to head out for my first trip soon. Also any recommendations for flies and riggings and what not for the areas is greatly appreciated. Thanks for the help guys. Feel free to pm me.

New PB! Chomp chomp

Been skeptical of guide trips for a long time. But also just been amazed with Alex Lafkas’ content on YouTube. So when he happened to have an opening on the White River I claimed it.

We had a hell of a day. I was blown away by how much Alex knew. No amount of reading & watching could match what he taught us. We had what I thought were tough conditions — crazy muddy water & minimum flow from the dam.

But he still put us on fish all day. Plentiful ~20 inch “minnows” and then this 25” fish. My buddy lost two others that we think were bigger. First lost to a bad line tangle and second escaped via submerged tree.

Seemed like Alex wanted those fish more than us! And we wanted ‘em bad!! So cool to see a guide still so passionate about the sport after decades. Electric.

BC Fly Fishing Lodges

Curious if anyone has any recommendations for lodges in BC that offer all inclusive fly packages? In 2026 I’ll be taking my dad and my brother for his 70th to either BC or Alaska and I’m trying to find a place that can give me options for Salmon, Halibut and Trout (Varden a plus), but most of the lodges I’ve seen in BC are primarily focused on Salmon. Anyone have any experience?

The wiggle?

I see guys wiggling their lines to add motion to flys. I see most situations where they don’t.

Whats the story with it? Streamers?

Here’s an example

Well, I know it’s a garbage rod, but for $20 I finally have my “in” on fly fishing. Where do I go from here?

Rod recommendations please!

Hi! My third year fly fishing coming up and I've always begged or borrowed a rod up til now. I'd like to get fully kitted up and have always been recommended the Oracle Shakespeare rod but wondering if anyone has any other recommendations?

Double hand rod, UK (Scotland) based.

Thoughts on the Filson fishing vest?

I’m looking to get my first vest before I travel this spring on some fishing trips, and I was just wondering if anyone had any experience with the Filson vest?

Replacement Waders

So I’ve been rocking my Simms freestone waders for about 8 years now. They’re definitely in need of replacement due to bashing through sage brush. So I went looking at a couple of the sporting goods stores to try and get an idea and look at what kind of changes have been done. Came across the Simms G4Z and almost had a stroke. How is it that a pair of waders can be $1000? One sales rep was trying to say that it’s worth it to be able to unzip if you had to go to the bathroom. I’ll just keep unclipping the straps and roll them down like the rest of the peasants. So anyways, it’s another set of freestones for me lol. Just thought it was wild to see a set of waders cost so much.

Reel Advice

Looking to buy a 3wt setup for small streams in my local area (Sierras in CA), as well as a summer backpacking trip in the Golden Trout Wilderness. I’m a big fan of Orvis and their warranty, so I’m looking at the Clearwater 3wt 7’6” rod and the Battenkill Click 1-3wt reel. I’m also looking at the Battenkill Disc 3-5wt. What pairing would work best for targeting small trout?

Who’s familiar with Guideline NT11 rods?

Who has cast the NT11 from Guideline and how would you rate it? Which model did you cast?

I am interested in the 6/7 wt for trout and streamer fishing. Either the lighter Trout-series or the Saline.

On to February

Alas, I fished January 1, I fished during the month of January, and I fished the last day of January. It ended with a broken rod tip. February will be better....right?

Flyfishing in Alabama

I go to school in Alabama, was wondering where are some good areas to fly fish. I started off fly fishing in salt water so I'm completely new to freshwater fly fishing.

Newbie to Bass

Hey all - I’ve been a trout fisher for some time here up in Western NY, and looking to do a bit of lake fishing in the summer. My family has a cottage on one of the Finger Lakes, and a few years ago I bought a used boat that included a trolling motor. In the warmer parts of the summer when trout aren’t biting, I thought I’d get the motor running and try my hand at some bass.

Any advise on getting started? I’ve got a few 5 and 6 weight rods and general trout stuff.

Floating line vs. Sinking lines vs. Sinking Leaders?

Types of leaders to start with?

Types of flies to tie?

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Was watching Twin Peaks, thought you guys might appreciate Officer Truman’s take on swinging for steelhead (S02E10)

Decided to watch Twin Peaks after learning of David Lynch’s death, not only is it a beautiful and fascinating show, but there’s a few references to fly fishing throughout.

Egg flies - how to fish with them when fishing in river?

New with blobs and eggs. So how do you fish with them? Especially do you offer them to stocked rainbows and do you use nymphing techniques or fish them like soft hackles or long line nymphing?

Internet gives me (again) million different answer, but would like to have some inside from fellow Redditors.

I mostly fish in Nordics (Finland, Sweden, Norway) either in southern rivers that are more "muddy" but have some sea trout population that spawn in said river. Or in Lapland area where waters are more clear and spawning fishes are more likely graylings, roach, perch and alike.

So, if you have any tips or tricks - please share. It is always nice to learn something new.

New PB on the Fly

Caught this 24” Drum in a local lake, by far the biggest fish I’ve caught on the fly so far. Very fun fight on the 5wt!

Place to camp and catch a (non-stock) trout in CA for a first timer?

I'm a pretty experienced saltwater and bass fisherman in Southern California. I've been watching a bunch of catch and cook videos of people that go to the eastern sierras or owens river and I kinda want to do something like that. Drive up at least halfway to 3/4 of the way upstate, camp out of my car a night or two, catch a couple of trout, preferably a brown or nice wild rainbow, and come back down. I've caught stock trout in socal lakes before and not really a fan of that. Plus I'd like to try out with my UL spinning and trout mini jigs first before investing more into learning to use a fly rod. Any one recommend a specific part of the state to try first? Any specific river or stream? Planning on going sometime between late april and early June.
