This is a subreddit for fly anglers of any age and experience level, from any walk of life or lifestyle. If you pursue fish with fly tackle (or want to), you're welcome here. Some of us chase brook trout on bluelines with ultralight rods; others prefer streamers or dries or dynamic nymphing techniques. Many of us use double-handed rods for steelhead, have a chronic permit problem, or chase tarpon or even billfish on heavier gear. Read, research, query, contribute, brag - all are welcome here!
Fly Fishing
This is a subreddit for anglers who pursue, or wish to pursue, their favorite fish on fly rods. Whether you fly fish a 2wt on small creeks for brook trout, a 14' 9wt for Steelhead or Atlantic Salmon, or Tarpon on a 12wt; your contributions and questions will be welcomed and appreciated!

Hey there unfortunately due to a layoff I need to move back to NJ from Pennsylvania so I'll be switching gears from fresh trout to saltwater fishing exclusively so I need to unload a ton of unopened never used fly tying materials shoot e a dm if you'd like the list I want to sell it all in one transaction.
Broke my skunk streak with this on an olive wooly bugger.
Is it a stockie or native? I have no clue how to tell
Hey everyone - inspired by a recent post I saw on this subreddit, I thought it would be exciting to get together with other anglers in their 20s and 30s to form a club or community where we can make plans to meet or share notes on California's fisheries.
I'm currently finishing medical school in San Diego, and will likely be staying in California to continue my training. I have some salt experience, and have been really interested in the Eastern Sierras and greater Sacramento fisheries.
I'm pretty new to fly fishing, and have struggled to find people my age who are interested in backpacking, camping, and hunting for the elusive spots that nobody else tries to get to. The traditional fly fishing cIubs are wonderful, but tend to be set in their ways, and less interested in the bushwhacking or hiking aspects of fishing.
If this resonates with you, comment or shoot me a message! Would love to create a community that works for us and helps us connect with one another. Thanks for reading.
Title says it all! Well, not really. It’s about to get cold where I’m at, and I have a tiny bit of money burning a hole in my pocket. I’m dreaming of a diy saltwater trip of some sort, preferably of the Carribbean variety, and I’d like to spend as little as humanly possible.
Willing and eager to rough it… camp, walk, and/or bike around if possible. Would love to avoid renting a car. Any advice on where to go? Anyone have any legendary tales of super frugal diy trips?
So I’m still new to streamers fishing but started since it’s fall and winter, and I wanna try something new. Haven’t got much luck except two fish one on a small dungeon and one on a black wooly bug. I always try to match the hatch and the bait fish at my local rivers are relatively about the size of my streamers. But some anglers said to try bigger streamers because some trout won’t chase after a small streamers, but a bigger one will kick on their appetite. Or a big streamer will get their attention more, and kicks in their instinct to chase and bite. Most of the trouts at my local river however aren’t the biggest, probably average about 7-10 inches. So should I get bigger streamers? Or just keep at it on what I’m using? Or tie on a bigger streamer behind my small streamer??
I thought it was a rainbow for a while now but saw another post that resembled it and people were saying landlocked salmon. Let me know!
Any Central Texas anglers have adivice about what to look for in a lower weight rod? I'm still using my beginner TFO 5 weight for all of my fishing, but I'd like to try something smaller next.
The 5 weight is a great rod and can do everything I need it to, but it can sometimes be overkill for the small bluegills and other sunfish around here.
It seems like it would be fun to keep the 5 wt as a bass and general purpose rod while taking the 3 weight along for the smaller fish. Any suggestions on length and brand? Or if this is even a good idea?
Hi yall, I'm an avid trout fisherman and recently tried my friends fly rod and fell in love. I've only ever used spinning reels but I wanna switch to the dark side lol. Anyone got any combo suggestions around 100$?

Has anybody fished out in WNC since Helene? My usual spots are not fishable right now and I’m getting tired of driving to VA.
Seems to good to be true no but I got this ad two days in a row on instagram??
The fish is admittedly just there to get your attention. That’s a decent brown I picked up on an olive sex dungeon I tied a couple weeks ago. A little about me. I’m 26 from the Catskills region of NYS. I’m a long time Reddit lurker, that recently started commenting on other peoples posts but this is my first post. I’ve never been much of a social media person but I started an insta last year and now I’m dabbling with Reddit a bit really just trying to see another side of/ make some connections in the fly fishing community. Which leads me to why I’m asking for advice. I’ve moved around a couple times since college and admittedly a lot of the friends and fishing buddies I’ve had have sort of naturally just moved away/ grown apart. And tbh, I’m kinda at this point in my life where I’m not really sure how to make new friends. Fly fishing is the biggest part of my life outside of my work so Ive tried going to tying nights/ presentations at local TU chapters but here’s my gripe. I’m generally the youngest guy there by at least a good 15-20 years. Don’t get me wrong I really do enjoy talking with the old guys they have a lot to teach us and some great stories but well they’re old. In their eyes I’m just a kid to them and although we’re friendly we’re not really friends. And let’s be honest… they’re more than willing to nitpick the fact that the proportions on my dry flies aren’t just so (tail was a mm too long) and scoff at the fact that I’m throwing mice and articulated meat flies. Im not exactly a classic dry fly fisherman although I can and will happily match that hatch when the fish are rising haha. Lastly, the old guys are not going to be my fishing buddies. A lot of them hardly even fish anymore and certainly couldn’t keep up with me if they did. So I guess this is what I’m looking for… in college we had a trout bums club. Just a bunch of guys (and a girl or two) that wanted to drink some beers, smoke a j, tie some flies, and catch a few fish. They were some of the best friends I’ve made and a few of them became more than just fishing buddies and we’d talk about life, girls, and other shit. I got really into this trout bums club and was even the VP my senior year. I would love to create a similar club here in my local area. Something that is “not your grandpas trout unlimited chapter” and is really just a group for younger people in their 20s and 30s to meet some friends and hopefully go fish. I kinda hope that maybe we could meet in the back room of a bar like once a month to tie a few flies and bs while planning fishing trips. Has anyone had any success pulling this sort of thing off? Any advice would be appreciated. It’s still kind of a dream of mine that I haven’t really thought through the logistics of. Lastly, I am serious about finding people to fish with and if you live in the area and are down send me a message I’d appreciate it. I need nothing, have plenty of my own spots, I know what I’m doing, all I’m asking for is just the companionship. Who knows maybe you’ll end up the VP of this little club of ours haha. And sorry for writing a bit of a book here, I’ve never been very succinct and I’ve got a lot on my mind. Thanks
One of the most colorful fish I’ve ever caught. Got this feller on a #20 BWO emerger pattern in PA
What flies would yall recommend up here in the Upper peninsula in the creeks and rivers?
New to fly fishing. Got my first few tonight. I assume this is a land lock salmon but wasn’t sure. Can somebody ID this fish?
I have an older Trimarc collapsible flyrod, model 747-7F with a South Bend 1122 reel and I have questions as someone who knows nothing about fly fishing. The label states recommended line AFTA #7.
Is this a valuable "display only" type rod or is the value low enough for a newbie to use and not be freaked if it gets destroyed/lost/etc.
Is the rod & reel combo good for a beginner?
How can I tell if the line is the correct size/weight?
Most inportant, for someone who hasn't fished much, is it hard to learn fly fishing?
I'm not asking these questions for myself but for my adult son. He wants to do some weekend camping and since this rod is advertised as a backpacker's rod, I thought he might enjoy trying fly fishing. However, he is ADHD and can get frustrated by things sometimes so I'm not sure if he has the right temperment/attitude for fly fishing.
This mom appreciates any advice you can give me to not screw up and give him something for his birthday that he'd hate or get overly frustrated with.
