This is a subreddit for fly anglers of any age and experience level, from any walk of life or lifestyle. If you pursue fish with fly tackle (or want to), you're welcome here. Some of us chase brook trout on bluelines with ultralight rods; others prefer streamers or dries or dynamic nymphing techniques. Many of us use double-handed rods for steelhead, have a chronic permit problem, or chase tarpon or even billfish on heavier gear. Read, research, query, contribute, brag - all are welcome here!
Fly Fishing
This is a subreddit for anglers who pursue, or wish to pursue, their favorite fish on fly rods. Whether you fly fish a 2wt on small creeks for brook trout, a 14' 9wt for Steelhead or Atlantic Salmon, or Tarpon on a 12wt; your contributions and questions will be welcomed and appreciated!

I bought a old fly rod recently at a car boot sale guessing it's fiberglass and started to look into the lines then I saw about weights and stuff...
There's no markings on it at all is there a way I could find out the weight of it. I would like to use it with floating line and what flies would I be able to throw with that weight.
Thanks all
I’ve narrowed down my rod choices to two options: Orvis superfine glass 7 foot 6 inch 3wt JP Ross Muir glass 7 foot 3wt Which one seems to be the better choice? Used for small stream fishing.
Grandparents were in town and took little man to a special kid-focused museum for the day.
I got out on a classic WNC stream at about 730am and had a slam by 9.
WNC rivers are alive and well in many places, but I have not found trout anywhere in my area since the storm.
Heard they are stocking the Mills and the Catawba next weekend, though!!!
Wife got me a new Lamson outfit for our anniversary, and it fished really well! Pulled out about fifteen for the day. It was very chilly and windy, but they were eatin the squirmy worm and some red midges (and thanks to the group that fished near me and shared some hand-tied flies with me!)
Hi all!
Hope you're healthy and safe. Thanks in advance for your help!
I got these beautiful waders in a size small for my birthday. I'm so stoked to use them. I am 5'4", 160lbs (bit of a muffin top, lol). I wear a size 8 US boot.
The sock part is attached to the waders - and it is huuuuge on me. I mean, about 1.5x the width of my foot. I was hoping that this was normal? They are slippy to walk in without boots because of how big they are on my feet. I don't think I can size down - the waders are a bit tight on my belly. Granted, I do go down a few lbs in the summer. I haven't tried them on with boots yet - I don't own any proper wading boots. That's my next purchase. I usually just wear hiking shoes and get them soaked. Do you think that sliding the socks into some boots would be ok? I guess I'd have to size up.
Thank you very much for your insight. I'll be waiting for any response anxiously! Enjoy the sunshine - and happy fishing!
It’s the little tastes of dopamine that count.
If there’s ice in the river, but it’s not iced over, is it still fishable? What are the strategies? I’m in northern Colorado and was fishing the poudre this weekend which has parts where it’s totally iced over and then some more exposed areas. I’ve heard of fishing tail waters, but is there any hope for fishing if you can find open water or will the fish be too hard to target?
Headed to Burgundy next summer for a boys trip and was hoping to get hooked up with a guide who could provide gear and take us out. Would love any recommendations if any of you have done this. Thanks all.
Hello!
Can anyone recommend a decent single person pontoon? Im torn between a Classic Accesories XTS or an Outcast PAC 1000. My max price would be around 2 grand all in so that's what draws me to these two. I'll mainly be fishing still water lakes and rivers up to class 2 in the PNW. Any advice or information would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
Main grid is 9mm - which is an odd dimension
it's only fly fishing if you meet certain requirements: 1- must use a humpy or royal wulff that was passed down from your great grandfather. 2- must use a $4,000 dollar split cane bamboo fly rod. 3- the fish must be a wild trout in a spring creek, in montana or New Zealand. 4- the cast must be at least 50 ft long. If you can check off every one of those boxes, then, and only then, will you be fly fishing. What requirements should be added? Open to suggestions?
whats up folks
Am in the market for a new reel for my 9' 5 wt orvis Clearwater. lifelong fisherman but just got into fly fishing a few years ago. some notes:
would love recos on reels + line pairings if anyone's happy to share, thank you!!
This is the tip of my new fly rod. Is this a defect? The guide isn't perfectly round on the right... Thanks
2025 alpine season can’t come soon enough! Time to restock the boxes…
Okay so I live in Richmond. I've been fly fishing since June, and I've been killing it. That was until about 2 weeks ago. The last fish I caught was a 1ft Pickerel out of Tuckahoe Creek. After that, there's been nothing anywhere I go. I'm wondering if there's any place I can drop in a nymph or a Clouser and pull something out, or if it's time to call it quits until March.
Caught a bunch of jack, amazing fighters, and watching a school of 500 come hammering in is awesome.
Okey guys, so i need a decision what #5 or #6 rod to choose.
I keep looking at either of this and can't decide..
Vision Hero #5 or #6 Vision Onki #5 or #6 Guideline Stoked #5 or #6
Vision hero seems to be the best rod overall when i read in forums. Hero is right now on black week ~170 dollars Onki and Stoked ~140 dollars
Is the 30 dollars extra worth the differens between hero and Onki/Stoked or do you prefer one of them more than Hero?
I also like the tapered a little bit smaller handle on visions #5 than #6 but don't know if The #5 will be enough for like 2-3kg rainbow trouts and river trout fishing. Make me clear my mind please!
Very amateur woodworker, and looking for a project as we get into winter so I can tie flies in the bedroom etc. Anyone seen (or have) basic plans for a portable fly tying station? Thanks for any suggestions
Can anyone help put together a list of the essentials to start fly fishing? I recently picked up the echo 5w kit but after that I’m not 100% on the essentials I need to go out and learn aside from a fishing license, and some flies. Thanks in advance!
1st , thanks to all that are helping me try and understand this giant rabbit hole I’m falling into.
So, what’s the purpose of or advantage of a so called wading jacket?
I see them and they are not cheap.
Thanks
I can’t take good pictures 🤷🏻♂️
Any one have tips for fishing the little red river in August
