Great Lakes salmon/ steelhead rod reccomendations

Courtesy of an unknown light-fingered angler, I’m in the market for a new salmon/ steelhead setup. I’m looking at a 10’+ 7-8 wt, but I’d like suggestions! Going to be fishing some big rivers, but I haven’t stepped into Spey casting.

Next step after a Cabela’s Bighorn 9’ 6wt?

I’ve had the Bighorn for ~5 years now, and it has served me well here in Texas. I fish for bass primarily, and I’m not getting any hogs that make me feel like I need to get a heavier rod.

I’ve been eyeing a 4wt (Orvis Clearwater or Redington Crosswater) to use for trout - I travel to Utah and Washington to visit family from time to time. Figured I could also use it here in Texas for smaller bass and bream.

Any thoughts on this or recommendations on rod specifics (e.g. length, wt, etc.)?

I bought this Orvis Knot Tyer Tool around 1991 and as I've aged I've grown to appreciate it. Not usually a fan of knot tools.

SA GPX Mastery

Anyone have any experience with SA GPX Mastery? I know it’s SA’s line before they changed the name, but I saw it online for $29 and I thought it might be worth a shot. Likes/dislikes?

New (to me) setup

So, been thinking for a while I should try fly fishing. As a kayak freshwater/inshore fisherman for the last few years (and lovin' it), this has always been regarded as 'crazy talk'.

Found an amazing deal on this combo- Scott Tidal 8wt with a Nautilus NV-G 8/9 reel with line that has seen very light use. I'm a believer in the 'buy once, cry once" school of thought, so went a little higher on first purchase. Or at least buy for the long term (within budget mind you- I'm not using credit for a hobby).

So now begins the journey- and so far, wow. SO much to learn. I'll be targeting LMB in lakes and sea trout, redfish, and stripers on the coast.

And I thought high end Japanese braid and fluorocarbon line was expensive. Ha!

My uncle gave me this. I was wondering if I should put this to use on my 4wt or simply hold onto it. I'm thinking it's the 1993 year model but wasn't sure if it could be potentially much older.

Redington ID reel Issue

I've got a redington ID reel and it seems the drag its stuck in one position. As it is hard for me to describe it almost gets stuck at one drag setting. When I go to adjust the drag nothing changes. It has happened a couple times now and in the past I have waited it out and it almost seems to "pop" back into its normal function. It is like there is something blocking the mechanism from working correctly and being adjusted with the dial. That being said I am careful where I put it and how I treat it so I'm pretty sure there is no silt or dirt inside the mechanism. Any help would be appreciated.

Fly line debate! To me the quality of flyline is more important than the rod. Last fished about 30 days with SA Amplitude and love it. high mountain lakes, 2-5lb trout. Comments?

I had the opportunity to cast the new Orvis Recon. Here's my impression.

This past weekend I got my hands on the new Orvis Recon and was able to cast a 7wt and an 8wt, both 9ft. The 7wt had the Orvis all-rounder saltwater line while the 8wt had Rio summer redfish line. Both had the new version of the Hydros III reel. This was at a fishing show so casting was indoors, no wind, and on a 50 foot casting "pond" with about 4" of water.

First, people will bitch about the graphics. It's very similar in style to the H3 but the bright white is now gray on the Recon so it's much more subtle.

I own an 8wt H3F so comparing to the Recon 8wt was as "apples to apples" as I can get. The rod casts very well. It picks up line off the water easily. I could tell it was lighter than the old Recon but slightly heavier than the H3. It loads pretty good down in to the mid section of the rod, but not as deep as the H3F. It's action feels like it falls right between the H3F and H3D, with a bit of extra swing weight. It does have really impressive damping, especially on the non-casting plane. Makes for very efficient and accurate casts. It's very much like the H3 in that respect.

With the improvements to the Clearwater rods I was assuming the Recon would fall by the wayside. Now with it's new improved version I'm wondering if Orvis didn't just cut in to their H3 sales. The new Recon isn't quite an H3, but for several hundred dollars less it will be a very tempting rod for people seeking the higher performance without the big price tag.

When they come out this Spring I may have to cast one in a 5wt so see if it's going to fill my 5wt void.

Comprehensive list of rod manufacturers?

I'm trying to put together a list of rod manufacturers and make sure I consider all options fairly for new acquisitions.

Are there some rods that are not well known that should be considered?

Orvis Euro rod comparison

Trying to decide between the 10 ft 3wt Clearwater for 200 or the current Recon on sale for 250? I've read/heard some critiques about the tip of the Recon being less sensitive, and I've read good things about the Clearwater.

Anyone know the weight of the Clearwater?

Thanks

Looking for recommendations for a light rod.

Hi all, I’ m looking for help choosing a light fly rod for small stream trout, ideally a 2-4wt, and shorter than 8ft. Mostly for fishing grown in creeks for small fish, and hoping to keep cost low.

Wright and McGill LLBean pack rod

I inherited a llbean pack rod and I’m trying to figure out some things. The rod has #7 as the recommended line. It is a 7 1/2 ft 4 piece rod. How do I know what weight Line to put on it and what reel should I pair it with. Thanks for any help as I would like to take this thing out and show it life again.
