This is a subreddit for fly anglers of any age and experience level, from any walk of life or lifestyle. If you pursue fish with fly tackle (or want to), you're welcome here. Some of us chase brook trout on bluelines with ultralight rods; others prefer streamers or dries or dynamic nymphing techniques. Many of us use double-handed rods for steelhead, have a chronic permit problem, or chase tarpon or even billfish on heavier gear. Read, research, query, contribute, brag - all are welcome here!
Fly Fishing
This is a subreddit for anglers who pursue, or wish to pursue, their favorite fish on fly rods. Whether you fly fish a 2wt on small creeks for brook trout, a 14' 9wt for Steelhead or Atlantic Salmon, or Tarpon on a 12wt; your contributions and questions will be welcomed and appreciated!

I haven’t seen any recent reviews online. My Simms Tributary waders are leaking and as happy as I was with them (I got 200 hours+ out of them before they leaked) I’m reluctant to purchase another pair with how terrible all of the Simms reviews are since then.
What are people’s experiences like with Dryft waders? Reviews from several years ago indicate that they are very durable, which is what I’m looking for, but had a tendency to leak around the boot. Have they improved? Thanks.
Hey guys, I’m a young man with a dream. I wanna catch a gosh darn bonefish (or any other saltwater game fish tbh) and I also wanna eat thousands upon thousands of calories of delicious Mexican food. And I wanna talk to some lovely Mexican people and learn about Mexico.
So I’ve just booked a flight to Cancun Dec 1st. I’ll be there for 3 weeks, but here’s my dilemma: I can’t afford a rental car.
So…. Here’s what I’d like advice on: -I’ve been researching Xcalak, but are there any other small towns/areas that would be a good base for diy wade fishing?
-any other advice??
Honestly if anyone has any advice whatsoever I’d appreciate it haha
Thanks!
Winter is here up in the mountain lakes, there was a school of stocked tiger trouts just chilling by the shore line. No one was there but me, so I had a blast catching up to 20 of them, and endless bites. Just on the jig leech, they were going bananas over it. Definitely one of the most fun I ever had fly fishing.
Currently have an 1,000 budget to pick up these items listed below. What would be some of the best choices based on this budget.
I was leaning towards Dryft combo for waders and jacket, Orvis boots, and have no idea on sunglasses (so much stuff out there). What are peoples suggestions on these items? I’d like to be able to do some winter fishing as well, due to living in a warmer state.
Waders, Jacket, Boots, Sunglasses.
I have a super cheap, almost free rod I have that I use to practice in backyard that says it's medium action 5/6wt on the rod. I have 5wt line on it ATM and I have a hard time casting with it. I'm wondering if it's bc it's a cheap rod or bc of the 5wt line. So I was thinking of putting 6wt or 7wt line and using the rod for those heavy flies making it my dedicated "bass" rod 😁 Do you guys think 7wt line will be too much? Also, is there any reason to put under WT line? Like 4wt?
I was lucky enough to land this 20 inch fish yesterday with my 9 foot 5 w, I just want to make sure I am right and that it's a lake trout in spawn colors and not a splake thanks in advance for your help identifying it for sure!
Taking a 2 weektrip to Japan in a few days. I don’t really have an itinerary. Gonna throw the tenkara in my backpack though. Any recommendations for somewhere public transport accessible that I can throw a few casts? I’d also be open to any guide service recommendations. I dont mind hiking, thanks
Any suggestions on what line to pair with a 3wt superfine glass? I’ve been looking at the 444 peach.
Should I overline?
What are people's thoughts on using a swivel while fishing a bounce rig? Seems like it would make rigging up faster and less complicated when you loose the set of flys etc?
I’d like to do more fly fishing in the winter. Most of my waters near me have snow and ice on the banks. Any tips or tricks for not slipping when getting in and out? Do you use special cleats?
Caught this 19 pound rainbow trout in the Chilean Patagonia in February, but never got around to uploading it, so here it goes. It fought like hell!!
Here in KC we are in shock that this is the end for K&K Fly Fishers. This was the only fly shop worthy of the name in this wide region. St Louis is the closest flyshop now and nobodies driving over there.
My wife and her sister snagged some concert tickets and I took a few days off work.
Going to hit the south platte and I would assume get my ass kicked (haven’t done much research - it’s suck season at home). But I’m so excited to just get out there and maybe get lucky.
I know there’s levels to this - but by all metrics I’d consider myself a beginner. I’m just proud I tagged along to fly fish a real river. I’m normally a Midwest guy hitting ponds and such (which I love). But expecting to fail and being excited it great right? Taking the swing when you can get to the plate? Etc?
I'll be in town for a couple days and I'm trying to find a place to launch the kayak and fish. Any tips would be beneficial.
