cammenga 3H

I bought a cammenga 3H from Cabela's recently and I love it. I was recently walking around my city's park learning how to use it when I noticed the dial not rotating freely anymore and keeps tilting lopsided no matter which direction I'm facing. The north arrow will not point rotate to the usual direction north should be. Did I break my new compass? If not how do I correct this issue?

Good backpack for scouts/camps/hikes

I'm looking for some good recommendations for an outdoor backpack. It doesn't need to be super intense; holding things like water bottles, snacks, first aid kit, general outdoor tools, etc. I've got a cub scout and would like to have something that I can use for all of this that could transition to him as he grows. If it can be well organized, even better!

Bought the wrong nikwax product, can I still use it?

I accidentally bought hard shell wash in and I’m trying to rewaterporoof fleece line soft shells, lol! Will I cause any major problems just using it anyways? Or should I try to just apply on the exterior somehow?

Best sleeping bag for under £300/$400

Hey guys, looking for a sleeping bag and £300 is my absolute limit. Ideally around £200/£250 would be ideal. It's for bikepacking so I need it to pack fairly light and small, nothing crazy, around the 1.2kg mark is where I'd like to be around/under. I plan to use it in temperatures that will probably fall to around -5 degrees celicus, but ill also be cycling through summer nights. I know there isnt a sleeping bag that can do it all temperature wise, but something close enough would be great haha. My priority is keeping warm on those cold nights. I live in the UK.

Many thanks!

Rapide SL failed?

Hi, I went for 3 night backpacking trip in southern Germany. Temps were around 6 degrees celsius/43 Fahrenheit at night. I’m a warm sleeper, but the Rapide SL (1st gen with Primaloft) failed. I felt cold at the hips and shoulders, even though the Rapide SL was fully inflated. Kinda disappointing…… Did anyone else experience that problem?

Two sleeping bags, but not 100% sure of rating

I was gifted 2 sleeping bags from a friend, and I am simply not sure of their respective rating nor is my friend. Based on some research, the Coleman I believe is 40 degree, but again I am not sure. The other one, I can't seem to find any information on.

Does the weight of the filling indicate the rating?

Tent comparison chart

Posted this on r/backpacking already but posting here as well!

I made this chart to help make my decision about which entry-level, budget 2-person tent I should get. To me, budget is under $200. Durability and fabric quality rankings were determined by ChatGPT after I gave it the material info.

From this list, I’m leaning towards the top two rows.

Question for you all: does anything on here not seem right OR is there anything else you think I should add to compare?

On my other post people recommended I add:

  • Eureka suma 2p
  • Lanshan 2
  • AMPEX 2p

Fire Maple

Noticed that Fire Maple was having a sale and pretty good prices on their Star X2 system. Placed the order approx 1.5 weeks prior to my trip and choose standard shipping. Finally get tracking info later that day or next day and realize it is shipping from China.

What a let down and feel like they were not very transparent. Nothing was mentioned on the shipping page that I remember and went back and went through ordering process and see nothing of it mentioned.

Off my soap box….

Choosing a 2P Tent

Hey, I am trying to decide on a good 2P tent. I am 5'11, and I will mostly be going solo. I will mostly be doing 2-3 nights in Southern CA during spring, summer, and fall. It would be great if any of these could accommodate for my 5'0 girlfriend and possibly other conditions/regions. My options are:

X-Mid 2 Solid
MSR Hubba Hubba 2P
Copper Spur UL2
Nemo Hornet OSMO

What would you guys suggest, or do you recommend something else?

Non-tacticool alternative to the Helikon-Tex Patriot Fleece (Fleece recommendations)?

I'm currently looking at getting this fleece. However while I really like the features (shitload of pockets, pit zips, double layer with grid fleece underneath and heavy fleece on top), I don't really like the tacticool aesthetic.

I don't like down/synthetic fill jackets as I prefer something I don't have to worry about and baby. My current fleece is looking a bit battered but I've had it for a decade and used it while caving, bumsliding down snow slopes, etc. I want something pretty dang warm like this without being heinously bulky, and a hood+lots of pockets would be much preferred.

Given I can get this somewhere for $103 NZD I feel I'm unlikely to find anything else close to it in terms of price/performance but figured it was worth a shot as I don't want to look like I'm on the way to the airsoft field all the time.

My bag for when I'm camping for over a week

I love this bag it's a sas Bergen by maruader tactical and I know someone will comment on size and how it could be smaller and lighter I like the size it gives me plenty of space for anything I might need and as for size I'm in very good shape so carrying a 30kg bag across Dartmoor isn't a concern for me

Removing a bubble from a marbles compass

I have an old marbles compass with a bubble that impedes the rotation. It looks like it screws open, but I am not sure how to remove the bubble and close it up so there isn't another bubble

Also if anybody knows what fluid is in the compass and where to get it that would be most appreciated

Best wine glasses for camping

My parents spend the summer travelling around France camping in their iKamper (car roof tent) - they've got most of their camping gadgets sorted but the one they struggle with is wine glasses.

They like a stem style wine glass but they take up so much space, so looking to invest in some nice stackable, unbreakable wine glasses for camping. Prefer plastic not metal (taste seems odd) & not silicone (squeezable issues), a solid design is important.

I've seen some recommendations on here for the GSI Nesting Wine Glass - has anyone used these long term and can confirm that the bases are weak if screwed/unscrewed lots of times (cheaper ones have snapped). Or the Joie Wine Glass To Go which looks similar.

Primus Omnifuel / Trangia X2 issues

Hello!

I've recently bought a new Trangia X2 multifuel burner, which I now know to be a Primus Omnifuel (but without the secondary control valve). However it's being a nuisance to fire, lights up fine after pre-heat but soon runs with a spluttering flame and blocks up fairly regularly.

So far I've tried it on Kerosene and Unleaded petrol (gasoline), with the appropriate jets for each. Preheating with methylated spirits (denatured alcohol). The result is the same: carbon deposits around the three flutes in what would be the control valve of a normal Primus version, and a blocked jet within maybe 20 minutes of running. To the extent that when flipping the fuel bottle over to purge the system and shut down, the pressure can't even fully escape!

Something I have noticed is that with the jet and the control spindle removed, if I look into the threads where the jet should be, there appears to be a lump of metal where the control spindle end would be, almost as if the drilling which would deliver the fuel wasn't made deep enough to fully broach through the sidewall of the burner... Can anyone confirm whether it should be possible to poke a thin wire all the way through the control spindle hole and see it protrude in the jet hole?!

TL;DR

Burner runs badly and blocks up, do I have a manufacturing defect?!

Marmot Catalysts vs Mountain hardwear mineral king

Ive been looking for a new 2p test for car camping and found the catalysts for only $60 and the mineral king for $130. Ill mainly be camping by myself sometimes w/ another person and am not concerned about weight at all. I am a little taller at 6’1 if that matters space wise. Was just wondering if its worth the extra to go with the mountain hardwear or to just go with the cheaper Marmot???? Thanks!!!!

I currently have an Alps Mountaineering extreme 2 if that helps!

Collapsible pole for lantern?

Something along the lines of this on amazon. Maybe nothing is perfect, but I'm too caught up reading about rust or lack of reliability on what I'm finding and it seems like a pretty niche product type. I'd just like to have a nice foldable pole for a lantern to be able to read or setup my space in the evening time, without relying on just a headlamp.

What's the deal with Mountain Hardware's "Deloro Down" Jacket?

Saw it on sale for cheap while trying out some casual jackets to wear around town when it's not too cold or wet. Don't really see any discussion of the item and trying it on alongside MH's Stretchdown Jacket I didn't see much of a difference. Any thoughts? Looks like it is (going to be) discontinued.

Both seemed a bit meh in the construction and heavy, but still quite comfortable for town. Below are the listed differences between the two.

Where do you sell your camping gear?

Edit: thanks to those who offered some guise yesterday I found a local buyer who dm me off here and we’re meeting at REI tomorrow so thank you everyone! I know questions like these on subs aren’t so fun and if it weren’t for your replies no one would have seen this since it was downvoted so bad) 💚

I searched the sub and didn’t really see a lot of answers to this.

I have a lightweight tent that has a small hole (repairable) in it. I bought it from REI and I’d love to sell it. Is there any apps you recommend other than Facebook marketplace or offer up?

It’s only been used once and deserves to go to a good home. I’ve never sold any gear before and thought maybe this would be a good place to ask. Thanks for your time.

AI Spam Bots

We have seen a HUGE uptick in obviously ChatGPT/Similar written spam comments, especially on recommendation requests.

Please report them. I'm not sure how Reddit plans on dealing with this trash, but I suspect they won't do shit.

Thanks users, us mods really appreciate your reporting and so on for that stuff.

Gazelle T4 Tandem vs. Timber Ridge Pop Up Cabin Tent

I'm in the market for a new tent and am looking for something that is:

  • Fast to setup (hub style with no poles ideally)
  • Robust for 10+ years (2-3 trips a year)
  • Fits 6-8 People
  • Has a vestibule / entrance area

I've narrowed down my choices to either the Gazelle T4 Tandem or the Timber Ridge Pop Up Cabin. These tents seem very similar with the major difference being the Timber Ridge option is half the price. Does anyone have experience with either of these tents and does the Gazelle justify the price? I'm okay with spending more if the quality is twice as good or the materials are superior, but I was hoping to get some outside opinions. I'm replacing an old eastern mountain sports Pallas 6 which as been though the ringer and is a true pain in the neck to set up.
