My friend's father gave this toy to him recently. His father told him that it was one of his toys from his childhood. We're thinking that puts it around the early 50's. The wind-up does still work, but it's weak enough now the wheels only spin when you lift the toy up. We've found a couple online, but they're pristine and with the box. This one is... well, not. The driver is missing his arms, and the legs of the horses are missing. Does anyone have any ideas on the possible price range for this in the condition it's in? Thanks!
Me and my partner picked this up a few years ago from a second hand store and now are thinking about selling it. Its nice but it has made moving house trickier each time. There are also two glass sliding windows for the middle section but they are still wrapped from moving. The glass is thicker at one end and also seems to have hand painted decoration around the edges.
As far as I can tell it seems to be genuine mother of pearl and the verdigris seems natural. Those sorts of details along with the amount of hand painting makes me think its less likely to be a cheap imitation piece produced later. However, it would not surprise me if there were plenty of people also doing 'mid-range' imitations of stuff from the last century too.
The other thing of note is that if you use a cleaning product on it, or even a mild vinegar solution when dusting/cleaning it will leave behind a fairly light brown residue on the clothe/paper towel. Maybe this is nicotine, but it does not smell at all like smoke anymore. As such I thought maybe that is a sign of certain types of lacquer.
