How consistent is surf in South Wales?

Thinking of moving to Wales. Currently live in the south of England and the surf isn't consistent meaning a couple of hours drive to Devon and Cornwall at the weekends.

Looking at the Gower or pembs. Ideally want to be somewhere that has a bit of a life if it's flat but can surf at least weekly or several times a week. How consistent is it? Is Pembrokeshire more consistent than the Gower?

(Nb I know Cornwall is the obvious choice but it's v hard to find somewhere to live, don't want to contribute more to the housing crisis there and it's pretty far from everywhere else)

Moving to North Wales

I'm weighing up a move to North Wales (Bangor), this is mainly motivated by all the great climbing and mountaineering. However over the winter months it would be great to go surfing as well. Does anyone live there and can talk abit about the surfing? How often do you get good conditions? Is there much of a community? I appreciate naming good spots online isn't usually a good idea I'd just like to get a feeling for the surf scene.

Is it worth the move to south coast?

I live in London but due to medical issues and my work/study being remote, I now only need to be in the city for 2 days of the week, with my boyfriend to crash at also when needed. I've been hoping to move out of my place and have been offered a room in Hove.

I've been considering making my move for the spring/summer after spending some fantastic spring surf sessions and odd days in summer surfing east wittering last year (with a few odd trips to Devon). I know Shoreham has waves occasionally, as a kook I'm pretty happy with any wave tbh and chance to get in water.

How does the surf hold up Brighton/Worthing way and would it be worth trading the 1.5 hour drive I do from London to east wittering currently? Or is it likely going to be flat as we approach spring/summer?

Surfing Thursday Rest Bay

As the title suggests I'm planning on travelling to rest bay on Thursday for a surf. It's the closest place for me to do in a day. I am a complete kook but just wanted to see if anyone wanted to join me

Surfing North Wales

Hi everyone, I am wanting to move to Wales for a new start. I love surfing but also love mountains, hiking and waterfalls so was thinking North Wales? I've been searching for a base like a nice town with shops, community, live music etc so not totally remote as can work from home during the week then drive out to cool spots on weekends for adventures. Any areas which you would suggest? Looking for a community of people who are into similar interests. North or South Wales as long as there's lots of fun things to explore! Thank you in advance 😊

8-9 degree water surfing outfit - 4mm with hood, boots and gloves. Is this enough?

Looking to surf a bit on Anglesey as the forecast is looking good but I'm hesitant due to the water temperature being the coldest I would've surfed in (coldest so far is about 12 degrees with just my 4mm and was ok for an hours surf). What do any more experienced cold water surfers think. I have hood, boots and gloves to help with the cold but is this enough.

First time Surfing, need advice

Hey All

Hope you can help, a friend of mine has convinced me to try surfing and we are planning to go to Bournemouth soon, this is very last minute though so not had much time to look things up etc. I am looking to possibly rent a wetsuit as I obviously don't own one, and don't want to buy one if it turns out surfing isn't for me. My problem lies in the fact that I am a very large(fat) guy and i don't know if anyone would even have anything in my size.

Any recommendations on where i can look?

Details on surfing the Severn Bore on April

Hello,

I'll be going to England in April and saw that there is potential for a 4-star Severn Bore to happen during my stay. I know this is fickle but worth the try. I am not from the UK and know very little of the surf scene there, so I figured I asked some questions here:

  • What thickness of wetsuit do I need to surf Severn River; I know this is dependent on air temp, but what is a general safe size?
  • Is anyone here going or interested in planning it?

At any rate, good to hear from you all. If anyone comes to San Francisco, California, USA let me know and I'll take you surfing.

Looking for surfmates to join for a drive from London

Hello everyone, I’m new to London and the surf community. I plan to go surfing at the nearest spots (Wittering, Southwick, Joss Bay) and would be happy to find someone here to join the ride. I live in South London, have a car, and all the necessary equipment. I saw someone recommend some Facebook groups, but all London groups seem to be inactive

Surf lesson for boyfriend? Advice?

I've been self teaching my boyfriend to surf. He's picked it up fairly well. But I'm also a self taught kook (did a couple of lessons over years) and have a range of bad habits from not getting out on board enough these days.

I've managed to get him too pop up, stay on wave and paddle onto wave with a slight push from me at the back of the board. I've decided to get him 1:1 lesson for his birthday to get to green water level, and also brush out any bad habits he's learnt from me 🤣

We're based in London, I surf on south coast of UK which has inconsistent conditions. Anyone got any recommendations of spots and schools that offer this at a decent price?

Surfing the Witterings? Beginner and alone

What are the Witterings like? I’m a beginner, moved to London relatively recently, and trying to get out as much as possible.

Been to Newquay and Bournemouth mostly, and always had the safety of a group lesson.

I want to try West Wittering next weekend. What is it like? Both conditions and the lineup

I also want to try to start practicing on my own. But I’m really nervous about it - I’m really worried about getting in the way of other surfers. I’m also quite sure if I get there and see a packed line up, I won’t make it out.

Thoughts? Advice?

Palm Culture clothing - any experience?

Hey folks - looking to buy some shorts atm and these guys popped up. They seem to be a very new, small company. I've never come across their stuff before - wondered if anyone here had any experience?

2nd hand surfboards/work

Hey just wondering if anyone would have a 2hand surfboard or a good store to go to get one around the bodmin area. I'd prefer a high performance board I usually ride a 5,10 27 and half litres anywhere in the ballpark of that would be nice.

Surfing North wales

So I just got back from holiday in France, Hossegor where I tried surfing for the first time and absolutely love it. I want to continue surfing back in the UK but I'm not sure if its possible where I live in Liverpool.

I've heard you can surf in North Wales. Does anyone have recommendations of where to go? What time of year is best? What sort of wetsuit and other gear I would need etc?

Thanks in advance.

Surfboard recommendations - improver

I've been surfing for a few years but only manage to get out for a couple of weeks a year due to living so far away from any decent breaks.

I've always just hired boards and usually get a 7ft soft top. I consistently catch green waves, sometimes manage to surf along them instead of just towards the beach, and I'm starting to turn on the wave now.

I think it's worth investing in a board instead of spending £100 a week on rentals and I'm looking for any recommendations of what kind of board to buy to progress more. I was looking at these two initially:

RYD Everyday Soft Surfboard 7ft 0 Tahe Egg Surfboard 7Ft 0

Any thoughts? Would a soft top be best for my level?

Thank you

Japan to the UK Options for Surfing

Possibly moving back to the UK at the end of the year after almost 10 years in Japan. After having had a half decent local break about 1.5 hrs from where I live for years now and lots of options up and down the coast, I’m desperately trying to settle on a location within the UK that will give me some options.

I have the option to be based out of an office in London or Edinburgh and need to be in the office twice a week.

If I can be within 2 hours from a decent spot, and 2 hours to work, that would be fine.

So far here’s what I got-

Edinburgh: Stay in the city (no idea about surrounding areas), with access to Bamburgh beach within 1.5 hours. The wave looks small but seems like it might at least be consistent and rideable on a short board? I also heard rumors of a potential wave pool in Edinburgh sometime in the future. I also hear there is some big surf during the winter months further north in Scotland but it’s a trek.

London: Live somewhere around Bath (bit expensive but we loved it there on our last visit) for access to London via Bath Spa station. Wave pool in Bristol within 2 hours drive, Porthcawl within 1.5 hours, and Croyde Beach within 2.5 hours. I’ve heard there are spots in Kent but it looks way too small most of the time for anything but a longboard.

Any advice?

Surf camps recommendations

Hi, I’m looking to go on a surf camp in Spain or Portugal this autumn. I was thinking of the Canaries as I’m not a fan of cold weather but would also consider mainland Spain or Portugal. Has anyone been and can recommend any? Ideally not a party type of crowd. Thanks a lot!
