Why Do So Many People Have a Problem with Cape Town? 🤔

Hey fellow South Africans, I've noticed something lately and I'm genuinely curious about it. Whenever someone posts something positive about Cape Town—whether it’s a tourist sharing their experience or just a post highlighting the beauty of the city—the comments often get filled with people (usually from Joburg or Durban) talking about how their city is "so much better."

But here's the thing: I almost never see Capetonians jumping into posts about Joburg or Durban to say the opposite. (maybe I just miss these comments, but personally I've never seen it) It’s not like Cape Town is perfect (we definitely have our issues), but why the need to put it down every time it gets a bit of praise?

Is there something specific that Cape Town did to rub people the wrong way, or is it just a bit of friendly rivalry between cities? I’d love to hear everyone’s honest thoughts on this, but let’s keep it civil, please!

Edit: Just to be clear, this isn't about city bashing. I’m just curious about why the vibes get so negative whenever Cape Town gets a bit of love.

South Africa Selected for 2025 World Baseball Classic Qualifying

https://www.mlb.com/world-baseball-classic/news/2025-world-baseball-classic-qualifiers-announced

South Africa has been placed in a group along with Nicaragua, Chinese Taipei (Taiwan), and Spain for qualifiers for the 2026 World Baseball Classic. The group is to be held in Taipei, Taiwan and the top two teams will advance to the WBC finals co-hosted by Japan, the USA, and Puerto Rico. The games will be played in 2025 from February 21st-25th.

The top spot will almost surely be Chinese Taipei/Taiwan, a major baseball powerhouse. South Africa will look to pull off the upset against Spain and Nicaragua. Spain is not a traditional baseball country, but it pulls a lot of talent from Latin Americans with Spanish citizenship. Nicaragua is baseball-obsessed, but it is a small country of only 7 million people.

This will be a long shot, but still possible. In fact, South Africa nearly beat Spain in the last round of WBC qualifiers, narrowly losing 5-4.

Most South African baseball talent comes from the Western Cape, though there are baseball academies throughout major urban areas in the country. Their main talent comes in the form of pitcher Tayler Scott, who recently had a breakout season playing for the Houston Astros of Major League baseball - the sport's most prestigious league:

South Africa! You beauty!

Just arrived back home after 2 years of being away. Just flying in and seeing landmarks made me so happy. Definitely no place like home.

Before you downvote, harken here ye, please!

I am a performance artist in Durban and I'm staging a public "letting go" ceremony. Aristole and Psychologists agree that catharsis is the best way of movin' on from trauma. But how do you get closure when you're up against someone like Diddy, but she is still on the loose?

I do not have 20 years to waste, waiting for justice, I want emotional healing by November 19th 2024.

Background: I left the country in Sept 2023 as an English teacher, and I came back on the run in July, as a horror movie final boy. So instead of dealing with corrupt officials/bribery for 20 years. I'm using art to let it go licketysplit.

Please join me if you have been hurt by a liar. They don't have to be a theiving psycho, who stole millions from retirees and spent it on botox, like the person in my case, but let's do like Psalm 4 verse 4 tells us in the Holy Bible: Be angry, but not sin.

Let's use our imaginations to get closure instead of actully being psychotic and acting like these dirty girls and boys.

Whaddaya say?

Buying a 2nd hand vehicle - hidden costs/what to look out for?

Hi Saffas. Need some advice:

1. What would be additional costs beyond the sticker price that I would need to watch out for and what is a reasonable cost range? (And is there an impact if I buy a vehicle from a province that I dont reside in?)

Here is my current estimation as a baseline:

https://preview.redd.it/a1dxlbtffi0e1.png?width=562&format=png&auto=webp&s=769b96a86fdd12237e74d84c003bf35393704fc7

Okay. And then this might not be the best place but I also want to verify what the impact is if I don't provide a deposit initially?

2. I have now had multiple dealships telling me not to make a deposit payment and not pay additional money before the 1st of 3rd month. My understanding was that the total interest is already loaded for the full period so hence my deposit is less impactful if I only pay it later? (the opposite of a home loan?)

I am looking at buying a Jimny :)

Are Unisa Degrees Useless?

I’ve been seeing posts suggesting that UNISA degrees may not be as highly valued as those from other South African universities. I’d like to hear from recent UNISA graduates who have found success in the job market and learn about their experiences. I’d also appreciate any advice on how to approach job applications with my degree.

For some background: I’m currently working at a school and studying towards a BCom in Informatics. I’m in my third year, but I’ll be finishing next year due to needing to retake a few modules. My end goal is a career in data, so I’m interested in hearing what others have done to succeed in this field or any field for a matter of fact with a unisa ?

Fully grown "baby" scorpion

Think it's the third time I'm finding one of these. Formal name "Plain Pygmy-Thicktail". Fully grown scorpions around 3cm (peg for scale).

Tell me you've seen these as well.
