A special place for music lovers. Whether you're looking for recommendations, want to try out a new genre, or you're trying to find artists similar to one you really like, this is the place!

The record store has become obsolete for many people in the digital age. Think of this subreddit as a record store. If you've ever wanted to work in a record store, now's your chance. If you really enjoyed the latest m83 album, and want to find stuff that is similar, then this is the place to come.

Example questions:

  1. "I'd like some good country music that isn't Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Lefty Frizzell, Hank Williams, Gillian Welch, and the obvious."

  2. "I really enjoyed Miles Davis' album Kind of Blue. Any recommendations for something similar?"

  3. Here's a post-punk [spotify/grooveshark/whatever] playlist that highlights the essential songs for someone getting into the genre.

Looking for songs similar to Come On Let’s Go by Broadcast

I just discovered the song Come On Let’s Go by Broadcast and am looking for songs with a similar vibe for lack of a better word. To me it has an almost 70s, almost hippy feeling to it. Their other songs don’t quite have that feeling I am looking for. I don’t know how else to describe what I’m looking for but I really love the feeling of the song.

Looking for a recommendation: A song about a smart woman

I am looking for a theme song for a fictional character. Unfortunately, I am hopelessly uninformed about popular music, so I hope you can help me out :)

Some things about the character: Her name's Ivy, she is a surgeon (mostly doing facial reconstructive surgery), very clever and also attractive, with long wavy blond hair. She is active in the social life of her home town and married to a mild-mannered poet/author. She definitely has a strong will, can be a little impatient and controlling of others, and sometimes uses her looks to her advantage, but not in a very malicious way. She is confident, she wants to solve problems, and she is proud of her intelligence. The story puts her in supernatural danger with horror and mystery themes, but that's besides the point. All this is just for additional illustration, the song doesn't have to fit 100%.

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to find a fitting theme song. It should be relatively popular music with lyrics that highlight her confidence and, most of all, her intelligence. Preferably nothing about breakups. Ideally, it's performed by a female singer. Any ideas?

Everything I could find on the internet was either video game related, which doesn't really fit her, or was about going to school and getting good grades. There must be more out there?!

Thank you all in advance!!

Looking for dark, atmospheric and slow music similar to one Polish song.

Hello! I've been looking for this kind of music for a while and I really want more. I am thinking of slow music with a lot of nuances. I wouldn't call it ambience. Just take a listen:

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=msMj-tkAayk

That's a Polish song and when I try to make Spotify play similar music it plays Polish rock (as it is the main genre of this band).

I would be really happy if some of you knew music similar to that one song ^^

Music Recommendations for bakery

My mother owns a bakery, and we (as in me and the other employees) play our music regularly. As soon as my mother comes out of the kitchen, she's like "Nope, we can't do this!" and changes the music. 10 minutes later, she comes back out again and changes the SAME MUSIC SHE JUST CHANGED. I'm trying to compile a bunch of chill, laid back songs to play. Any recommendations? Looking for stuff like Jack Johnson, Regina Spektor, James Taylor, Dodie, Lumineers, Kyle Rogan, Frank Sinatra, Casting Crowns, Bing Crosby, Beatles, Malinda Kathleen Reese, King & Country, and Pentatonix.

EDIT: AAAHHH Thank you so much, stranger! This is my first award ever! :D

Looking for a list of bands per decade

Hello everyone! As the title says can anybody recommend bands from the 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s? I'm trying to expand my taste in music. If it helps I like songs such as Welcome to the Jungle, Back In Black, and Sweet Child of Mine.

Can you guys recommend me some songs like "Fallen" by Gert Taberner

I have been going through a phase in my life and this song has really helped me a lot. I just want to know if there are more songs which would make me feel the same way this song did.

looking for a certain type or style of guitar (riff?)

I know very little about actual music, I just have opinions of what kind of music I like. I've found I like this style of music or guitar piece and I want to know if there's a name for it.

It's this style the guitar is being used, it's like a spacey riff or something.

Examples of it are in this song. I couldn't find any others similar (that's why I'm searching for it.)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WR7fwMM5ccc (1:46 into the song)

Thanks y'all

Discover the italian psych rock scene

Hi people!

today i wanna introduce you something obscure, unknown but really interesting..

Many of you maybe don't know about the italian underground scene.. there is a lot of nice music plaied by great musicians and the most of them play just as an hobby because in italy be a musician is not considered as a job...

The buisness of discographycs is a sort of mafia (in italy as well!), and this is the reason of the bad international reputation of italian music of the last 30 years.. the mainstream production in italy today is made by few big labels promoting rap, trap, bad quality of songwriters and any sotr of music made in TV talent show.... and it's not for the music or for the deepness of the words, it's just a question of buisness: the most is the tv exposure the bigger is the profit

But don't forget in the 70's in italy was full of amazing bands as AREA, PFM, Banco del mutuo soccorso, Osanna, napoli centrale and many others... and the most of them were real genius and well known as the "italian progressive scene"..

The heirs of that scene as developed influenced by the modern tendencies of psychedelic and heavy-psych american scene.. there is a great desert and stoner following all over italy deserving to be pleased..

Due to the great number of musicians between this people there is a great scene of new psychedelia and italian underground bands produce a really high level music.

If someone is interested in a deeper discussion about italian psych stoner scene you can contact me here... for now i leave you with this great playlist

waiting for your feedback

have a great musical day!

Looking for classic rock/oldie reccomendations

I've been wanting to assemble a playlist of oldie/rock style music, but specifically, some that sound like they could be used in video game and movie trailers. Songs with a theme-song vibe, such as

Short change hero from borderlands 2 by The Heavy

Paint it Black by The Rolling Stones

Ain't no rest for the wicked by Cage the Elephant

I'm not sure if this is the right sub to post this to, but I'm just looking for a few songs with this kind of vibe. Thanks.

edit: yes I do realize I spelled recommendation wrong in the title

Why Vinyl?

I'm 50 years old and was considering getting back into Vinyl. As normal, you make a list of the pros and cons. The cons greatly outweigh the pros. Maybe I'm missing something. Hoping you guys can shed some light? I get.the deeper more full sound of vinyl, but is that it? The ease of streaming media is unparalleled. I sit in my patio on a nightly basis smoking a.cigsr, drinking a single malt listening to my favorite tunes. Sometimes I.listen to classic rock, sometimes it's blues. Depending on my mood, I put on a playlist and enjoy. That is something that vinyl doesn't offer. Open to your suggestions. Thanks.
