I have data on Google, Apple, OneDrive, and EverNote.

What’s the best way to consolidate all my data in one place? I prefer OneDrive but I’m open to suggestions.

File/folder permissions when OneDrive moved to another drive

    I tried asking here:

    https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/msoffice/forum/msoffice_drive-msoffice_unknown-mso_subother/filefolder-permissions-and-security-when-oncedrive/0dcf7a87-ef0a-41b9-866b-d5a428d1ba0c?messageId=5439f7e8-50c8-4a9e-856e-2b51156e7618

It contains a long description of the issue and what I'm trying to achieve. But the answer isn't really helpful and they didn't follow up on my reply. I believe it's suggesting not downloading the files to the local hard disk, which is what I need.

In short, this is my question:

Is there a simple way to prevent one user from being able to browse the folders/files of another user whose OneDrive has been moved to the D: drive on the same computer?

    or

Would I have to manually change the permissions on the OneDrive folder D:\username\ so that only that user can access that folder and sub-folder/files?

Using OneDrive for syncing files between two computers

I currently have a thin and light, underpowered laptop which I sometimes hook up an external GPU enclosure to for gaming and local AI. I also use this laptop for working on personal programming projects in my free time. This is my main workstation.

I have a Microsoft subscription so I have 1TB of cloud data, and I've configured the laptop such that all my files are synced to Onedrive.

However, I have constant issues with the eGPU. Sometimes it's a hassle for the laptop to detect the monitor through the eGPU, sometimes it disconnects mid-gaming session and doesn't connect back until the laptop has cooled off, not to mention gaming with it puts incredible strain on the poor laptop which will shorten it's life span.

I'm considering building a very basic mini desktop and putting the GPU in there so I can game from it without worry. I plan to set it up to sync with my OneDrive so I'll have access to all my files there too. The goal is to have two devices that are always in sync, so I can switch from one to the other and have the latest versions of all my files always available on both devices. Whether I want to work from home, or take the laptop to a cafe, it should have the latest synced files.

Is there any downside or deal-breaker with my idea? In my head it sounds fine but I've never synced a OneDrive account across multiple devices so I'm not sure if there is any limitation here.

Search in OneDrive is so limited

For a cloud service offered by one of the biggest companies on the planet, the search function is severely limited (and I tend to rely on Search a lot). I recently subscribed for MS 365 family so I am entitled to 1 TB of cloud space. I have only used about 10% of the space and it's a hassle trying to find anything via search. I am coming from Google drive that allows you to make refined searches but the experience here is grossly subpar. I can't even restrict my search to specific folders in OneDrive.

I think I'll just have to limit my uploads to larger-sized, well-named and arranged files because any search criteria beyond name, date and type of file seem to be unsupported at the moment. Can't

For this reason alone, I ended my subscription today

With the Android app for OneDrive, you can't play music while the screen is locked or in the background. I mean, common every other app can do that (Google Drive, Dropbox, even File Explorer) and it seems like people have wished for this feature for ages (quick google search).

My Samsung S24u has OneDrive integrated for phone backup stuff, so I thought I will pay a subscription fee for 100gb storage in OneDrive. So I started moving all my files from Google Drive to OneDrive since I thought I didn't need Google Drive any longer. But as soon as I realized OneDrive is not capable of playing music in the background and there seems to be no solution other than downloading a third-party app that can stream from your drive, I ended my subscription and will now pay for Google Drive instead.

Really embarrassing that OneDrive doesn't include such a basic feature.

BTW, for the people who will ask me, why would I upload music to OneDrive? I am a music producer, and I like to export my unfinished project for me to listen to on the go.

Links that opens in File explorer

SharePoint link that opens in File explorer

Hi all, I'm working on a SharePoint folder shared between colleagues and synchronized on each PC. It often arises the need to exchange links to specific folders/files in order to make it easier to identify the files we are working on (for example to tell a colleague "upload the photos you took in this folder").

Using the "Copy Link" function of the File Explorer context menu, however, creates a link to the SharePoint folder/file that opens only in the browser.

How can I get around this problem?

    Thanks

Samsung Gallery sync not working correctly

I have been using Gallery Sync to OneDrive for over a year and it has always worked as I expected, as a two-way sync between DCIM/Camera and Pictures/...

However I recently did a system restore on my phone (Galaxy S22) and I cannot get it working correctly again. What I find is:

    (1) Photos added to DCIM/Camera on phone show up correctly in OneDrive/Pictures/Samsung Gallery/DCIM/Camera but photos deleted from phone are not deleted from OneDrive.

    (2) Photos added to Pictures/some-album on phone do not show up in OneDrive/Pictures/Samsung Gallery/Pictures/some-album and photos deleted from phone are not deleted from OneDrive.

    (3) Photos added to OneDrive, either DCIM/Camera or Pictures/some-album, do not show up on phone, nor are deletions synced in this direction.

    I have:

    • verified Gallery sync with OneDrive is enabled and all my albums are listed and enabled in Albums to sync.
    • logged out of and back into my Samsung account on my phone and my computer
    • disconnected and reconnected the synchronization of OneDrive with Samsung Gallery

I have not received any solution from Microsoft's community support site.

Smartphone synching doesn't work for all folders.

I had some issues setting up OneDrive and automatically syncing with my smartphone. I use a Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra. I enabled camera upload in the OneDrive app itself, not the Samsung gallery, and selected the folders I would have liked to sync. However, I have noticed that not all selected folders are synchronized. I tried several times to uninstall and reinstall the OneDrive app, stop syncing and restart again. But it never worked.

The goal is that there is a folder in my picture folder in Onedrive called "Smartphone Images" and in the folder are then subordinated to all folders from the smartphone gallery that I would have liked to synchronize, not just the camera shots. I am slowly despairing. I've been trying to do that for a week. In the meantime, suddenly nothing worked, now at least the camera synchronizes upload again, but also not all files from the camera folder from the gallery. Does anyone have an idea what I could do next?

Efficient way to back up OneDrive with external hard drive?

Just looking to understand the logistics of this.

I have all my files on onedrive, and I'm realizing I should back them up on a hard drive as well.

If I use an external hard drive as back up, then should I just make it a practice like once a month to copy everything over from onedrive to the hard drive?

I imagine it will take a while each time, but I don't know any other more seamless ways to do it, while also ensuring I'm backing up every file. Anyone have suggestions?

considering turning on backup for documents folder

Hi all, looking for the opinions of other Onedrive users.

tldr: how do you take advantage of document backup a bunch of random stuff ending up syncing to onedrive.

I have been using Onedrive for many years, but I only use backup for my photos. The thing is, I actually WANT to use it for everything, but I always have issues.

(To be clear they aren't really Onedrive issues... I know it gets a lot of hate, especially on this subreddit, but if you understand how it works it's really not that bad)

Currently I have documents backup off, but I actually still use the documents folder in my Onedrive folder.

The actual documents "library" in windows is pointing to the local documents folder in my user folder (aka documents backup is turned off), and it's basically... dead to me. It's a dumping ground for all the software that thinks its ok to use the documents folder as the default location to save all kinds of junk that I don't want syncing. This is why I originally stopped using documents backup.

It's been years since I tried to use it, but I remember things like opening a piece of software, and the whole time it is running having Onedrive constantly syncing and having errors because the files are in use, or changing faster than it can keep up. Then when I closed the software, it would start syncing hundreds of tiny files with filenames that looked like randomly generated numbers and letters. It would eventually finish and I never had any actual problems, but it just felt really janky and bad and like a huge waste of resources and bandwidth. I seem to remember Lightroom being one of the bigger culprits.

So the way I am doing it now has been working for me, but it would be nice to be able to only have one documents folder, and to use the windows libraries as intended.

Also, (there had to be at least one rant, right?) I am SOOO TIRED of fighting with Windows to keep it from enabling documents backup. I can fully understand why it gets so much hate. It is very aggressive about just moving your files around when you turn it on (and not moving them back if you turn it off), and it feels like it is constantly trying to trick you into enabling it.

So I guess my question is, has anyone (who is maybe a little bit of a control freak like me, I guess) come to peace with documents backup, and the fact that lots of programs will just dump stuff in your documents folder and it will end up syncing to Onedrive? Any tips for keeping that from happening? Or ways of cleaning it up?

I just looked and my documents folder currently has about 5 gigs worth of files and its all remnants of things I have uninstalled, or random stuff that I don't even know the purpose of. If I enable backup all that stuff is going to get synced.

Is it a bad idea to only have my photos saved in onedrive?

Is there anything that could go wrong? Cause I have a feeling there is, but cant come up with anything specific. If I back it up somewhere else, do I use another cloud device, or like a local memory stick?

    Copy samsung Gallery

    Hi guys.

I have samsung phone with Onedrive to backup my files. I'm synchronzing my phone photo gallery with Onedrive. Right now, when i remove photo from my phone it will be removed from folder on the computer, also if i remove photo from computer it will be removed from phone (in the synchronized folder).

I will like to make a automatic copy of all photos which I'm taking without synchronizing it.

I would like to have folder with all photos copied from my phone, and later sort it and move them to other folders without deleting photos from phone. Idea is to have folders "christmas 2023", "vacation 2024".

Dropbox was working that way ...

Sorry for my english. I hope evrything is clear

If you're trying to see your usage, click top left app grid.

    https://imgur.com/a/where-to-click-to-see-onedrive-storage-usage-capacity-Ww7Eiz0

Click that top left app grid and then click its OneDrive app icon.

If you click the center left OneDrive icon it will not show usage. Spent 15 minutes trying to figure this out. Love ya M$...

    Phone and Onedrive Issue

I take a lot of photos and videos on my samsung phone, now I am running into space issues and there are no options for a memory card (just external USB which is not a good solution)

I was wondering if Onedrive is a good solution and also is if there is the ability to have the photos automatically stored in Onedrive and not on the phone? So that when I look at the photos on my phone its actually the onedrive storage?

Microsoft desperately needs to fix video playback on mobile

I’m trying to watch videos I upload on OneDrive through the mobile app and it’s painfully slow.

Takes ages to open and once open it constantly buffers. What’s even worse though is the quality , even after setting it to full (requires setting it every single time) , the full resolution still doesn’t get applied. This happens on a videos even shorts ones of 10s

OneDrive already way behind in the backup photos category , if they want to compete with iCloud and especially google photos , they desperately need to fix a simple issue … video playback. You can hardly watch any video at this rate.

New Way to Transfer Google Photos and Drive Files to OneDriv

I was looking to switch from Google One to Microsoft 365 and needed an easy way to move my files and photos. I tried Google Takeout, but it wasn't quite what I wanted. Not sure how many of you are aware of this, but with the latest update, Microsoft made it super simple to import Google Photos and Google Drive files into OneDrive.

Here's how: On the OneDrive mobile app, go to settings and select "Import Cloud Photos and Files." Once you connect your Google account, OneDrive will automatically import everything in the background.Has anyone else tried this yet? Let me know your thoughts!

    Sort pictures by date taken

    Hi everyone,

As my phone storage is coming to an end soon, I want to upload some of my pictures to OneDrive. I already created some folders on my phone with the same structure as in OneDrive. However, when uploading those pictures, I do not get the same sorting as on my phone. Even though I mark all pictures in the folder at the same time, OneDrive seems to upload them in an arbitrary order. As I want to include pictures that I took myself and WhatsApp pictures in the same folder, sorting them by file name will not be a solution. Therefore, I tried sorting them via date, but OneDrive uses the upload date which does not work, as it uploads all the pictures in an arbitrary order.

Is there a workaround for my problem? I already checked online, but did not find a proper solution. Furthermore, I asked Microsoft support, but they told me there is no solution to my issue: https://answers.microsoft.com/de-de/msoffice/forum/all/onedrive-sort-pictures-by-date-taken/c0a0314e-2fd4-4fb3-b3f8-7b642fc17cbf?messageId=96d975f5-2937-495d-8c31-94dbfbaf5822 I know this question has been issued in this sub before, but for some reason I cannot comment on that post.

Thanks a lot for your help!

    RAW files no preview/thumbnails

So I purchased a yearly family plan to back up all my photos (almost 1TB in RAW file format) and to be able to see them and edit them from any of my devices. I uploaded some of the photos and I am unable to see the thumbnail for any of them, I can only see a grey square or the usual mountain&sun icon. I’m having this issue in all the devices (Macbook, Iphone, Ipad), in all the browsers (safari, google, brave) and in the app as well.

I tried looking for solutions online (download the file and upload it again, reset devices, stable connection, internet settings, onedrive settings…) nothing works.

I contacted OneDrive a week ago and, a part from having to wait 1 full day to get a response every time, they only come back to me with the basic solutions (the ones I mentioned before).

Also, sometimes I’m able to see the preview of the photo for a couple of seconds, but when I open it the quality is horrible. The only thing that works is to download the file, then I can see it full quality, but then OneDrive loses it’s point (having everything accessible in the cloud, not taking up storage in your devices).

Does anyone have the same problem or an idea of what I can do to fix this? Thought this thread could be way more useful than OneDrive support service…

    Thank you all!

OneDrive overwriting files with older versions: cause

I have noticed this behavior several times with OneDrive, and it's enough to make me fully uninstall and go back to physical backups of everything. OneDrive seems to "randomly" overwrite documents with old versions, sometimes MONTHS-old versions, and deletes all version history of that document.

I think I finally know what causes the issue. If you're working across multiple platforms, and one of those platforms is powered down, on booting the system that was shut down will sometimes overwrite everything on OneDrive with the file versions it has stored locally. Version history is lost because OneDrive accepts this new "old" version as "current" and discards any version numbers conflicting with or exceeding the "old" version.

This bug has caused HUGE amounts of headache for me and my team. At least now we (think we) know what's causing it.

    OneDrive upload question.

So I have been paying for office 365 and want to store some videos and pictures that I’ve taken throughout the years.

Starting next week I’ll have 1000/1000 fiber.

What is the max upload speed I can do with OneDrive?

    Organize OneDrive after years

    Hello,

I have uploaded everything I own in terms of pictures, files, pdf etc. for several years now. Some of them even twice and three times. Now I wanted to start sorting and sorting out my Onedrive. What is the best and fastest way? Are there any extensions for the browser or any tools for this or how do you go about it?

Share folder with different access rights in files

    Hi all,

I want to create a folder to my Onedrive for Business and share it between 5 individuals.

Into this folder I will have only 3 xlsx files (file1.xlsx, file2.xlsx,, file3.xlsx).

I want to strict access to these files (eg only user1 will have write access to file1.xlsx, user2 will have write access to file2.xlsx).

Which is the best way to achieve this?

    Thanks in advance!

Advice: Uploading 10-15GB files, best practises?

Hi. I'm after a bit of advice, we run an ecology business and take a lot of video files, we need to share these with clients. The current process is creating a folder for the project, and uploading the video files and sharing that folder with the client. They can then view the files and we delete after 30 days of access or when they're done.

My question is, currently, uploading the 10-15GB worth of video files ties up a machine while copying the files from the SD card to the OneDrive folder. Is there a smoother/easier process? Is uploading via the web interface a better solution because you're not then essentially having to put it in two places (the local machine, and then the upload to OD) ???

    Any pointers/advice welcome. Thanks!

Unable to backup Quicken- "can't open source file."

I was pulling my hair out because this problem began with the latest Quicken update. After reading many posts and turning off every sort of synch and cloud backup mentioned, I discovered that one drive was indeed backing up my Quicken backup files. The solution was simple. Right-click and invoke"always keep on computer" or something to that effect. Bingo, no more problem. Another interesting thing was the program "blanked" and asked for the vault password before presenting main page again.

[Free Chrome Extension] OneDrive Direct Download Link

    Hey everyone!

I'm excited to share a Chrome extension I've developed called "OneDrive Direct Download Link Generator." It's completely free to use and install, and I think it could be really useful for many of you who frequently share OneDrive files.

    Key Features:
    • Instantly generates direct download links for OneDrive files
    • Works with both personal and business OneDrive accounts
    • Saves time and streamlines file sharing

    Why I created it:
I found myself constantly needing to share OneDrive files but do not want then to open in the browser like a word document. The ones that I've found were no longer working.

    How to get it:
You can install the extension for free from the Chrome Web Store https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/direct-download-links-for/jnndhddpabmgbafgghkgfkgcgnmnmiba?authuser=0&hl=en

I have also create a web version here: https://mokachat.com/onedrive-download-link-generator if you are not using chrome

I'd love to hear your feedback and suggestions for improvement. Feel free to ask any questions in the comments!

    Thanks for checking it out!
