Guide for determining hair type
PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING: Some basic tips on going No Poo:
No-Poo has a variety of meanings, but they all refer to eliminating the use of sulfates & harsh chemicals (commonly found in modern, commercial shampoos) that strip our hair & scalp of its natural oils, which causes dry, frizzy, damage-susceptible hair & makes our scalp's oil production go into overdrive.
There are many ways to go shampoo-free & still get clean-looking, nice-smelling hair! Every method can do something different for your hair. This is a learning process; don't get discouraged if one method doesn't give you the perfect results right away. There is a method that works for every hair type, it just takes a bit of tweaking to find it. That's what this sub is for!
Before you put anything new on your hair/skin, make sure you use the recommended ingredient amounts & ratios, and follow the directions (to avoid drying out hair, irritations, etc.). Try new ingredients or products in small amounts first, especially if you have any skin sensitivities or are trying something completely different from usual.

my hair has gone from 2a to 2b since removing shampoo from my routine four days ago, and my hair doesn’t feel dry or greasy since before i was only shampooing about twice a week anyway. i’m feeling really happy with these results already, i’ve tried all kinds of wavy hair shampoos and treatments and none have done this much to bring out my natural waves!
Sooo i have thick and curly hair. Its been like 2 weeks or sooo and my hair fall increased alot. I was massaging my scalp and saw a ton of hair and after that i took a shower and saw hair there aswell. Please dont say that a human can lose upto 100 hairs a day as im losing more. My scalp is very very oily and i have sebronic dermatitis. After going nopoo this sudden hairfall was surprising. Tell me what to doo or should i quit

Just curious, it has no sulphates, parabens, waxes or silicones. It does contain a mild surfactant. Can it be a good alternative to traditional shampoo?

Hello everyone, could you please direct me to a source where I could find out more about using hair soap for washing hair? I mean especially formulated soaps for hair, not just any bought in a general store. I cannot find any proper and creditable information on that matter. Thank you very much in advance!
So it’s been 2/3 weeks ive been in no poo and my hair is now starting to cause lil pimples around the hair and one middle of my scalp , i have started having dandruff , scalp is itching , and this all been happening recently , i tried no poo 2 years ago and this same experience happened and i gave up , now im back doing it again and this problem is happening , asking if i should keep going or end the no poo journey (also im looking into the AC/V method but haven’t done it yet)
Growing up I was taught to shampoo and condition my hair daily. I have had noticeable dandruff since my teenage years that always resulted in me constantly switching shampoos or trying different anti-dandruff formulas. Well in October 2023 I decided to switch to using nothing but water.
Before: I had noticeable dandruff and consistently developed inflamed red patches on my scalp. They would go away after a few days but then a week or two later, another would pop up. My scalp would also be noticeably oily by the end of each day.
Now (6 month later): Dandruff is reduced by 75%. I still have it somewhat, but it's not noticeable. I no longer have these itchy red spots on my head. My hair is not oily at the end of the day and in fact looks exactly like it did when I woke up.
Overall, I am happy with these results and plan to continue without shampoo or conditioner.
Hello,
I’ve been on no poo for around 3 months.
Background:
Current:
Am I expecting results too soon? Are there any red flags from what I’ve mentioned?
PS: On non-washing days I wet my hands with the demineralized water and wet my hair a little to set it. Though I dont touch my scalp and I don't make my hair dripping wet. I'm also fairly sure I'm experiencing dry scalp issues as my flakes are really small and white.
I've been doing no shampoo for around 2 years now and never had any issues at all untill recently.
I've grew my hair longer into a mullet and I've started to notice slight dandruff. I was and srub my head every day but it still seems to be happening. Is there any recommendations for what to do to prevent this?
I have been doing No-Poo for 5 days now, and i understood that you want to avoid shampoo because of the sulfates in it that strip all the oils out of your hair. I was just looking at the ingredients of my sea salt spray and it says it has magnesium sulfate in it, does this ingredient have the same effect as the sulfates in shampoo and can i still use it if i want to continue No-Poo?
I have a pretty oily scalp, if I don't shampoo for 3 days I start getting dandruft. I tried no poo for like 3 months and man my hair felt terrible when wet. Especially as someone who goes to the gym 5x a week and sweats alot I would jump in the shower (normal temperature) and it felt like someone just put vaseline on my head. My hair was heavy and even after the shower it felt very vaseliny when patted with a towel. and yes I did wash my head and hair enough, but the oily feeling wont fade.
Hi I am 18 yo boy and i was thinking about quitting using shampoo, i personally wash my hair everyday. I have long (to shoulders) slightly curly hair, and i was wondering, should i quit using it cold turkey or just avoiding it more frequently as time passes. Was thinking about quitting because my hair are often really messy and i can’t keep them in place. Any advices?
So I started NoPoo about a year and a half ago, it started out rough but after about 3 weeks my hair itself was the healthiest it’s ever been, I love the feel and look and it was really easy to maintain! But the longer I did it and depending on hair length/season of the year, I started to get dry scalp flakes that I never got when I was shampooing or when I have really short hair… to give some context the only thing I do to my hair is rub through it like I’m shampooing in the shower. No product at all ever and no shampoo or anything, just water once or twice a day when I shower! Is there any fix to this? I love how no poo feels but don’t want to deal with this forever!
Can the ingredients of this styling paste be washed out with only water?

hi I'm about 10 weeks in to my no poo/water only journey. I rinse my hair with water twice a week and use a boar bristle brush daily but my hair is still greasy, it looks fine braided but I would like to eventually wear it down. is there anyway to reduce the greasiness?
I've been doing nopoo for 2 and a half months, I've always had a flaky scalp but it was way better with nopoo, it wasn't completely gone but it was still way less than before, but earlier I noticed that my scalp is kinda red and I have yet again a lot of flakiness. I've changed nothing between diet and routine. What do I do? I have 1c thick straight hair, low porosity and I have semi-hard water Edit: I also wash with acv once a week
Hi all! Been NoPoo for over 1 month and it has frankly been without any issues at all. My hair looks pretty much the same as it did before to be honest, though I feel better about it now.
Only thing is I have had dandruff all of my life (snow-like flakes, loads of them). I exercise, I eat healthy, I'm not sure what could be causing it at all. I've been looking into alternative washing methods, however almost all of the ones for dandruff recommend using aloe vera. I happen to be pretty allergic to aloe (it burns, turns my skin red, all that). Does anybody have experience with other alternatives?
Today I'm trying out a lemon juice/ olive oil hair mask that I found on hairfinity.com . Planning on just trying different things until something works haha.
I'm 5+ years into this lifestyle and everyone is different, of course. But I see a lot people here talking about using conditioner. And freaking out over people using hot water instead of cold.
Just stay true to the course and you'll figure out what works for you. I love my hair and get compliments all the time. My wife brags about my nopoo hair and most people do not believe me.
I have never had issues with smell, but when I had issues with flakes long ago my monthly shampoo was Selsun blue. I never even finished the bottle and have never needed it again.
Stay true and strong, No Poo!
As the title says I've been doing no poo for almost 2 years with varying degrees of success. The first year wasn't great but was manageable. However, around 6 months ago I moved to a new house that I'm pretty sure has much harder water than where I used to live and it has made everything infinitely more difficult.
I started nopoo for 100% shallow reasons. I hate the way my hair looks for days after I shampoo, and then just when it started to gain some of the oils back and look the way I wanted, it would quickly become dirty and greasy and required a wash. Thus the majority of the time my hair looked awful because of shampoo with few days it looked good.
However now the cons far outweigh the pros and I need to try something different. My main problems are that my hair gets lot of build up and gets extremely tangled so I have to brush it out but that leads to me pulling on my hair and a lot of hair gets pulled out and I'm extremely worried about balding so I really hate having to do that. When I use shampoo my hair has no tangles or build up and I can run my hands through it just fine and don't have to worry about hair loss (I should mention I'm no exactly "no poo" because every few months since I moved to a place with harder water, when my hair gets really hard to deal with I do shampoo it).
Another massive issue that I've faced with harder water is my scalp is extremely dry and itchy all the time resulting in dandruff and a scabby scalp for scratching.
I know there are a million no poo natural remedies on here but honestly they all seem to require a fair amount of effort and honestly I'm really lazy and would prefer to have just one product that I can buy in a bottle and use to wash my hair that doesn't make it look like complete garbage for days because all the oils get stripped out.
I have extremely thick wavy hair that is high porosity (I think?) if that matters. I really need a solution because I can't take nopoo anymore please help.
Going on my 8th month of nopoo and I am very happy I made the switch. I had started from a shaved head which I found was easy to start with, didn’t have to deal with excessively greasy hair. I did have a few times early on when my dandruff was getting pretty bad, but using baking soda to wash when that came up always solved my problems. My hair never gets greasy now and I have noticed a decreased amount in hairs falling out. All my friends think I’m crazy haha but I wouldn’t go back if you paid me
I've been on no poo since January of this year, I have a buzzcut so didn't really see much of a difference in hair quality. I've tried using coconut oil which kind of worked but was too much of a hassle waiting 45 minutes with oily hair every other day so I dropped that. My dandruff doesn't seem to resolve itself, It's been almost 4 full months. Any ideas?
I tried using egg yolks but it only got rid of the grease for like 3 days.
I have seen a few shampoo mixes - such as ACV or aloe Vera etc but it seems single ingredient shampoos maybe aren't enough?
I tried using coconut oil for moisturizering but I found it just sits on my hair and makes it super oily ?
so i was doing my normal routine, and I decided to use conditioner this time but the conditioner and shampoo bottle have the same design & it’s a head & shoulders shampoo so we all know how bad it is. I’m thinking of completely restarting now just cutting my 5 months of growth because now my hair feels super synthetic almost rubber like, nothing like it was before. I’ve been on no poo for like 5-6 months & I can’t believe with 1 wash it’s all gone. My hair has no volume & just doesn’t feel good. Thoughts? Should I restart? Or continue with my hair until it goes back to normal but like i probably won’t feel confident with this hair.
What I plan to do is wash my hair once a week with shampoo and conditioner. This is my first week doing this and I previously would wash my hair every single day. I will be washing every Sunday, but I rinse my hair with water every day when I shower. I have grown out my hair two times previously and I really didn't know what I was doing and didn't take good care of it. I had a lot of split ends and I want to do everything I can at this time to take a good care of it as possible and have it is healthy as possible right from the beginning.
I'm not sure if it's just because I'm on my first week and my scalp is still adjusting and will produce less oil after it's done adjusting, but I found for the last couple of days that when I rinse my hair with about room temperature water or just slightly warm water then my hair feels a bit too oily after I'm done and my hair is dried off. Today I rinsed with water that was as hot as I could stand, and then followed it up with cold water because I know that you're supposed to do that. Something about the cuticles in the hair opening with heat and closing with cold
My thinking with this is that since oil becomes thinner with heat, rinsing with hotter water allows more excess oil in my hair to rinse out then if I used cooler water. I showered a couple of hours ago, and my hair is completely dry now and it feels like the perfect amount of softness. Soft and not dry but not excessively oily and it has what feels like a normal amount of volume rather than sitting too flat and looking gross. Some days I just let my hair air dry normally, and other days when I get out of the shower and want to put on my headset and use my computer right after showering, I will dry it faster with a blow dryer, but on the lowest heat setting, with a tiny amount of warmth but not enough that there causing heat damage from it.
My hair is pretty short right now, but I intend to grow it out and I want to avoid anything that's going to cause any kind of damage over time and heat damage is something that I am very conscious and paranoid about. I don't know if this holds up in practice, but my thinking is that wet heat is safer than dry heat, and only using water as hot as I can stand to shower with is going to be not nearly as hot as the kind of heat that hair is exposed to when blow drying on high heat or using something like a curling or flattening iron. Sealing the cuticles afterward with cold water so it can dry like that I assume also should help.
What do you guys think of this?
Hair: 3B, low porosity
Before: I used to shower everyday with commercial shampoos and no conditioner at all. It was very dry at that time.
Now: I've only used shampoo (Shea Moisture) and conditioner (Also Shea Moisture) maybe 3 times in the past 2-3 weeks. My hair improved at first but that was about it. No major improvements.
My questions: 1) my hair never became greasy and is still not greasy. I thought when you stop using shampoo, you'd get a reaction with greasiness no? 2) Also, I feel like my hair got better but that was it. It's still not healthy.
I stopped using shampoo for like 5 years now, I have not used any ..my hair grow super long and fast but they get oily 😭 which isn't just stopping at all I use rice flour or Fuller's earth to clean it out but I really don't understand why it gets soo oily. in initial stages of no poo hair used to be very oily in comparison it has reduced a bit but still soooo much
Hi, I'm looking to starting my no poo journey. My question is, is it okay to shampoo once a week? I live in a very hot country and the idea of just washing sweat off with water without shampoo kind of icks me a bit.
Why don't my friends use products for curly hair and they look very good and if I don't use products my hair doesn't curl much🥲(before using products my hair was more curly) do you think that the hair is used to receiving products and when it doesn't refuses to curl? Should I get a buzz and grow my hair out without styling products?
