Include everybody. Anyone with any amount of texture in their hair is welcome here. Passing judgment on whether someone else’s hair is “curly enough” is neither useful nor productive for our common goal of bringing out the best in our hair. Please also remember that terms like “afro” and “big chop” have a long and complex history within the natural hair movement for black women (see wiki). To keep our community welcoming, it’s important that we respect these words and use them appropriately.

Respect cultural terms The natural hair movement has a long history and the words created in it have meanings. It’s important to respect where these words, techniques, and more came from, and celebrate the importance of the work done by these early pioneers. Please be aware of terms such as “big chop”, “afro”, “natural hair journey”. Be thoughtful and respectful about using these powerful terms appropriately!

Listen y’all… I could say I’m mixed Mexican but when you look at me I’m white. I’m mixed but only a few people are able to tell by looking at me first glance and I don’t mean just a little. I’m half Mexican a quarter Indian and a quarter white. That being said, I have curly hair and really would like to braid it. Not box braids but maybe put rows in the front and top. Im not wanting to do it bc it looks cute (It is cute tho) but more so to cut down on the style time, frizz, and breakage I deal with every single day. Is this a bad idea bc of my complexion?
I feel like I should keep deep diving, but I'm getting a bit overwhelmed with all the information around...! There's so many different product recommendations, not all available in Australia, and most of the care instructions seem to be tailored to the ladies. I'm also a bit lost about what type of hair I have.
If you're mad, I'm sorry I'll go back to trawling. If you wouldn't mind throwing a bit of advice over- thank you!
My questions:
- What type of hair do I have? See attached photos, I can't tell if it's 2A or 3A?
The first two photos are how it set itself this morning after I soaked and let it dry, probably 4 days since a wash?
The second two photos are after I ran my hand through it once, to demonstrate how it doesn't hold shape.
I've got a lot of hair but it's fine and prone to frizz. It's very dry- I brush to bring the oil through before showering/styling every day and still only wash 1-2 times a week. It's much frizzier than pictured, with no real defined curl or shape, the first couple of days after washing.
- Can you recommend a shampoo/conditioner? I don't mind paying $$$ since I don't use a lot of product anyway.
I only style with product (e.g. clay, salt spray, hairspray) for special events, can't stand going to bed with product in my hair. I use a leave in moisturiser after every wash and a curl creme if I need a bit of control in a hurry (NAK Orilab).
- Are there any key techniques I should be aware of? (I can probably figure this out on my own once I've got the hair type and product down, but doesn't hurt to ask)
Thank you in anticipation!
hey all, i’m white except for my 3c/3b hair. i usually wear my hair out (it’s kind of shaggy, just long enough to get into my eyes/touch my collar a bit). it’s summer here so i’m wearing hats + showering more often to stay cool but this seems to be making the top and back of my hair get even more frizzy, matted and dry than usual. i don’t use any special hair products besides argan oil every time i wet it, but even that doesn’t seem to stop the dryness.
are there any protective styles that are easy enough to do to myself, won’t look weird on an otherwise white person, and will let me keep a bit of fringe? failing that, is there anything i can do to keep my hair from being affected so much by hats? thanks!
Every wash day, I get these knots on the ends of my hair that I try to comb out and inevitably end up ripping my hair, no matter how gentle I am. I just had a “big” chop, where I had about 4 inches cut off my length, thinking it would help with these knots and shedding.
Does anyone else get this or have any tips on what to do? Do you trim the knots out yourself :(
Ok curly people.....how do you clean the product out of your styling brushes? I just started using one and I'm trying to figure out how to keep it nice! Thanks in advance!
My hair is curly and really thick and a few inches long, however its always poofy. I want to add some sort of cream to my hair so that it makes it fall down more while NOT enhancing curls, I hate my curls. Can anyone help or recommend anything? Thanks in advance!
can’t tell 😖
i hate my natural colour so i always have my hair dyed, but i’m too broke to get it done professionally so i usually use box dye. i see on this subreddit though that everyone says box dye is terrible for curly hair. whenever i use box dye it leaves my hair feeling softer and healthier than it did before, and i’ve never noticed any visible damage to my curls. why is box dye so disliked? i thought it was only bad to bleach curly hair, not to add colour without bleaching?
(im a young boy)
Hi everyone! I have type 2a waves, very fine hair on the longer side (mid back). I have the very typical "Irish curls" pattern where the bottom half of my hair is very nicely waived but the top half is on the straighter 1B side of things.
I workout frequently (6 days a week) so I rinse my hair every single day with conditioner (I wash twice a week with the frizz ease shampoo). I let my hair completely air dry before I go in with a wide tooth comb - this vastly helps reduce breakage and hair fall. However, this method results in a complete frizz ball of hair. Almost every strand is frizzy. I don't have this problem at all if I comb my hair when it's wet.
I typically don't use any products other than heat protectant when I blow dry. Any help would be appreciated. I really want to continue coming through only dry hair but I don't know how to reduce the frizz (nor how to encourage the curl on the top layer of my hair).
Currently using Aussie Miracle Moist along with head and shoulders when needed.
My waves don’t really show up even when wet anymore? Am I using the wrong products and/or method?
I’m very lazy so I don’t want to spend more than a few minutes on my hair and face everyday.
I use a tangle teezer, picture attached.
I don’t like to have anything on my head, because of sensory issues related to my autism.
Any tips on brands and home remedies that might work for my hair?
Iv been seeing a lot of creators use this brand and have really good results and I was wondering if anyone has used it and if it was any good?
For the last couple of months my hair has not felt good after conditioning. It’s stringy, feels like lumps of straw and it separates and frizzes when wet. It gets worse throughout the day. I’ve tried hydrating products, but they don’t seem to be working. I’m so confused about whether it needs protein or has too much protein.
The Garnier Fructis Curl Treat Jelly was my HOLY GRAIL and as you might already know, it has been discontinued. I am desperately seeking a replacement for it, ideally drugstore as I am on a budget. I have thick 2c hair. I love a gel product as I like to create a cast and then scrunch out the crunch after it is dried. Thanks!
Peep the curl pattern on the right 😊
Also, does my hair look ugly? Lot of my friends always complein about my hair, so should i give up and leave it straight or should i take care ot it as curly/waivy?
How do you know if you have hygral fatigue? And how do you fix it? Are there certain products I have to use or not use? Should I switch up my wash day routine? And how long does it take to repair?
I have wavy hair for reference. I am really lazy with my hair, I usually just let it air dry and then put a little argan oil in and comb before putting it up. I've been thinking about trying curtain bangs, just to add a little interest and also because I have a very round face lol. But I know I will not be blow drying or putting them in rollers etc. Does anyone else have them and just let them do their thing?
Hi,
I think my curl pattern is either 2b, 2c, or 3a, but I’d love your input!
Currently, the only styling I do is scrunching my hair with mousse after a shower. My curls look great on the first day, but by the second day, they start to feel heavy and lose their shape.
Could you help me identify my curl pattern? Also, do you have any product or routine recommendations to help my curls hold their shape for more than a day?
Thank you!
Posting on behalf of my wife who doesn’t have a reddit. She has what I would call a mix of 3A and 3B type curls. Every stylist she’s been to and the internet recommends diffusing and she is not opposed but unfortunately she has a couple chronic illnesses that make it difficult. She cannot hold her head upside down or she’ll pass out, she also has pain in both arms making it difficult to hold them in one position for extended periods of time.
I was hoping someone would have suggestions, unfortunately every hairstylist she’s been to said they’ve never been asked so they don’t know what to recommend. Please help me help my wife! TIA!!! -Spouse of a curly girl
