Subreddit Rules
Source your facts - If you're making a statement of fact, you must provide a scientific source. If the information comes from somewhere non-scientific (your experience, a blog), you must make that clear and not frame the statement as fact. Do not tell others to look things up for themselves - the burden of proof is on the person who first posts something. Read more about what qualifies as a source here
We are not your doctor - Do not ask for a diagnosis or attempt to give one to anyone else. If you want to ask about a particular condition it must be in an impersonal way and it must not ask for how to diagnose.
Advice requests must be specific - Requests for personal haircare advice must have a specific question in the post title. Vague requests (“what’s wrong with my hair?" "Give me product recommendations”) will be removed. Please post general requests for help/recommendations in the stickied Haircare Advice megathread, or rewrite this post to have a more specific question. Read more about what makes a post specific vs. vague here
No repetitive posts - In order to keep the subreddit uncluttered, questions that are frequently posted will be removed. Before posting, use the search bar first to see if your question has already been discussed.
This is a science subreddit - This is not the place to ask for styling preferences - try other hairstyling subreddits for that. Pseudoscience, chemophobia, or other anti-science rhetoric will be removed and repeat offenders banned.
No advertising - Advertising a product without any scientific discussion is prohibited. If you are affiliated with any product you must disclose your relationship. You may discuss your products as long as you have disclosed your relationship and have been flaired as a product representative. Product recommendations are allowed as long as it is not repetitive and you do not ask to take the conversations to DM or post affiliate links. We have a zero tolerance policy for advertising or promoting MLMs.
Be respectful - Scientific arguments may sometimes occur, but always treat other users with respect. No harassment/racism/sexism/etc. will be tolerated. If you are combative or rude when others ask you to provide sources, you may be banned. This rule also applies to your communication with the mod team.
No asking for advice on balding or hair loss of any kind. - If you have any questions about hair loss, balding or thinning please consult a medical professional. Other subreddits you might be interested in include r/tressless and r/askdocs.
This is not a product review sub. - Product ingredient lists don't really tell us much about the product; formulation matters. If you're looking for product reviews, try another sub, or google it. Same applies to posts asking for dupes of a specific product. Posts asking for help checking a product ingredient list for "harsh" or "harmful" ingredients will be removed as it promotes chemophobia.
This is not a hair coloring or styling sub. - For hair color advice, try r/hairdye or r/fancyfollicles. For hair styling advice, start at r/hair.
This is not a DYI sub. - There is a perfectly good DIY subreddit, r/DIYbeauty. Post homegrown product questions and other DYI fair product questions to that sub.

What's the difference? Their description pretty much explains the same exact thing. The ingredients look relatively similar. Has anyone tried these or know what the differences are?
I was wondering how humidity affects your hair and the need for glycerin. I’ve heard that the need for glycerin lessens when it’s humid, as it can lead to frizz, and that it can be particularly bad for high porosity hair. I’m not sure exactly why this is, but maybe someone with more knowledge can help me understand.
I have high porosity, coarse, 2b hair and I ditched glycerin in my hair products during summer months and it seem to have helped then. However, right now my hair becomes a dull, limp, dry and lifeless mess as soon as I go out and I’m wondering if the lack of glycerin is the villain.
I live in southern Sweden. During summer months the humidity lies between 60 and 80% here, which gives a dew point of around 10 to 18 on average. Higher during warmer days. During the winter months it becomes more humid and it peaks somewhere at 90% (on average) but the dew point is much much lower, maybe between 0 and 5 somewhere, sometimes lower. These numbers are probably not super accurate, but they lie somewhere between these points.
So my question is, do I still benefit from going without glycerin since it’s more humid or does the lower dew point make my need for glycerin higher? Does the temperature matter too rather than humidity alone? I would appreciate if someone knowledgeable could answer my questions ♥️
I have dry/damaged hair (Well, i Think?)
Today, I didn't use conditioner and my hair just feels so dry and tangled. I Feel like I need to use conditioner everyday, Can you guys recommend ways and also products I can use? Mainly accesible for someone who lives in the Philippines. Thankyou!
Yesterday was my first attempt to use sea salt. Yet after use, I realized that it dries out my hair. Is that a normal thing? If so, should I not use it? I am really confused.
so i’ve never done anything chemical to my hair i diffuse most days until like 50% dry and let it air dry. But i’m not sure what my hair porosity it cos there’s so many different sources saying i’m different porosities. I have wet frizz and a lot of it every day and my hair is always squeaky after showering which is every day and right after i rinse my conditioner out it’s back to being dry. please help🙏🙏
Hi i recently bleached my hair but it's a bit too yellow and when using toner it didn't really do much so i was wondering can i use the wella special blonde on my hair because i like the colour it gives. Thank you in advance
i have pretty oily hair, like it’ll take a day or two (sometimes less than a day) for my hair to get greasy after i wash it. i’ll use shampoo and it’ll work wonders for my hair but after a while it feels like it stops working and i don’t know why. right now im using the maui all hair textured shampoo and it worked really well but i feel like the past few days my hairs been so greasy.
I had an issue with my scalp so my doc suggested don’t use shampoo or conditioner or anything for week and I just showered why is my hair curly does this mean it’s my natural texture or what is going on
In general, my hair is soft, and I have wavy hair. I usually blow-dry it with my Dyson to smooth it out and then use sock curls. After taking out the socks, whether after an hour or overnight, my hair feels soft and bouncy. However, when I brush it back and look in the mirror, I notice a lot of dry, frizzy strands.
I’ve tried hair oils, serums, and even homemade hydrating hair masks, but nothing seems to help tame the frizz. I shower with warm water and rinse with cold water, but my hair still looks dull and lacks shine. My scalp also tends to be dry but gets oily a day after washing, so I think the problem isn’t dryness but a lack of hydration.
How can I fix this ?
Hi! I started double shampooing 5 weeks ago. At first I thought it was working really well - my very oily hair finally felt completely clean after washing it, it took less time to dry, and stayed cleaner longer.
Fast forward a few weeks, and I’m noticing my hair coming out much faster than it did before. I’m noticing small clumps coming out in the shower. What’s important to note is I’m only noticing more hair come out in the shower/immediately after when brushing. I do not have abnormal hair shed throughout the rest of the day.
I’ve also noticed more breakage/split ends, although it’s also been 6+ months since my last cut, which is about 1.5 months longer than normal for me, so maybe I would have gotten breakage/split ends at this point point anyway.
Could double shampooing be the culprit for one or either of those changes? My routine right now is shampoo with Loreal EverPure Volume Shampoo, then condition with Pantene moisture conditioner, then shampoo again with the Loreal. I do this routine every other day (any longer and my hair gets super oily/my scalp starts to itch).
FWIW, the shedding is the bigger issue for me. I can experiment with shampooing twice and then conditioning to see if the breakage slows down. I can also experiment with just double shampooing once a week or something similar. The issue for me is I don't want to give up double shampooing entirely, as I just don't think my hair was getting totally clean before.
Any insights/advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance!!
Does anyone know if there is a downside to using ketoconazole after a Brazilian Blowout? I am prone to scalp acne and was prescribed this shampoo some time ago. But I got the blowout treatment recently and am uncertain if the rx shampoo would diminish its effects. TIA!
Today I washed my hair for the first time after a week of illness. Normally I wash it every other day, so it was extremely greasy. I expected a nice healthy scalp, but it is extremely flaky and a bit itchy after washing! I did not see this before washing. I used the same as usual mild shampoo especially for sensitive irritated scalp anti-dandruf, washed twice.
How is this possible?
I have medium thickness, wavy blonde hair. No matter how many times and how good I wash it, my scalp is always super oily. I even used shampoo specifically for grease (I currently use the Monday shampoo for greasy hair). I shampoo twice, only condition my ends 3 times a week. Still greasy. I am a genuinely sweaty person, with an oily face. That could be related. Tips?
Hi everyone! I could really use some advice about my hair journey—it’s been a frustrating ride, so sorry for the long post.
I have medium-thickness, medium-density hair, and I’ve been trying to grow it out since 2022. It’s currently at BSL, but I can’t seem to make real progress because I keep damaging it. Every time it gets healthier, I feel the urge to color it, which ends in damage and trimming.
This January, I made the same mistake again—I bleached my hair to go copper. It seemed fine at first, but white dots and split ends appeared. Since then, I’ve been trimming regularly (March, June, August, September) with minimal cuts of 1–2 cm each time. Finally, last month, I cut 4 cm, thinking I’d solved the problem.
At first, my hair felt healthy and soft. But last week, I checked under sunlight and found hundreds of split ends—even in my bangs! They are all over my hair, not even just the ends. Most of them are white dots, and I’m at my wit’s end. Despite using masks, oils, leave-ins, treatments, and even sleeping in a bonnet, nothing seems to work and I've been doing these for a really long time. I also don’t use heat, but I’m still stuck in this cycle of damage and trimming, and I haven’t gained any length.
I don’t think I can cut any more off without giving up on my length goals. What can I do to stop the damage? I’m desperate and even considering shaving my head at this point!
Should I just leave it alone?

im probably not supposed to be here because I'm just a 16 year old guy but is there any possible way to thicken your hair strand? im asian so my hair is naturally so straight and when i go buzz my hair with 8-10 guard you can see my scalp because it's so thin and the worst of it all is my hair is spiky so i really can't do anything about it, i just want to have different hair styles but my thin hair ruins it all, and my head looks horrible when I have a short hair because i have a flat back head, so yea is there anyway to thicken your hair strand or is it just all really genetics?
For as long as I can remember I’ve had flat and lifeless hair. It’s gotten a little better over the years, but in middle school it was so bad that my hair would be greasy again in about 10 hours. I still hate how lifeless it looks.
Currently I use Verb Ghost Shampoo and Conditioner. After I get out of the shower, I put two small drops of coco and Eve like a virgin hair oil in my palms, rub them together, and focus on distributing through my strands. Then I dry my hair with a 100% white cotton tshirt until my hair is damp and air dry the rest of the way.
Is there something I can add into my routine to help?
I have thin, fine hair that’s probably around 2a/b. I swear it tangles just from existing. I’ve had many people point it out it’s that bad. I always hated winter because jackets, hats, and scarves make my hair so much worse. There’s this one furry fleece I wear recently that whenever I wear it, it looks like I haven’t brushed my hair in days.
What can I do to stop this? I get nervous about the amount of hair that comes out when I brush- I don’t have visible thin spots but I want to prevent breakage.
i struggled with trichotillomania (compulsive hair pulling) from ages 0-15 (i’m currently 18) and now i’m trying to fix my hair. i have low-mid porosity, my hair is fine textured, gets oily in 2 days, not very dense (which is what i’m trying to improve).
i haven’t used heat on my hair for years now, my hair air dries in around 2 hours, i wear a protective loose braid to sleep.
what oils should i use? and should i get a silk bonnet to further protect overnight?
Hello! I would love to know what you guys do to avoid your scalp from becoming extremely greasy after leaving hair serum/oil on your ends? I’ve been using the L’Oréal extraordinary oil serum on my ends since my ends become very dry after hair wash day and need some hydration. However, my scalp becomes extremely greasy on the very third day whenever I use a few drops of a leave in serum/oil on my ends. Any suggestions on how to avoid this?
Would mean a lot. Thanks
Bit of a stupid question since heartless styling is definitely a thing, but the sheer number of hair tool companies promising hotter and hotter settings have got me second-guessing:
What's the least amount of heat necessary to reshape damp hair? 150 °C? 100°C? None?
I recently came across a quite expensive device called Foreo FAQ 301 and I was wondering if these are worth the $400 price tag.
My question is not about this product specifically. But about LED devices for hair in general
Has anyone tried this or similar products? Are they to be trusted?
Saw a lot of people suggest to use shower filters here but I’m really confused on which one to buy as some people are suggesting water softeners and some are saying to go for 15-20 layer filters. So which one to really buy?
