Subreddit Rules

  1. Source your facts - If you're making a statement of fact, you must provide a scientific source. If the information comes from somewhere non-scientific (your experience, a blog), you must make that clear and not frame the statement as fact. Do not tell others to look things up for themselves - the burden of proof is on the person who first posts something. Read more about what qualifies as a source here

  2. We are not your doctor - Do not ask for a diagnosis or attempt to give one to anyone else. If you want to ask about a particular condition it must be in an impersonal way and it must not ask for how to diagnose.

  3. Advice requests must be specific - Requests for personal haircare advice must have a specific question in the post title. Vague requests (“what’s wrong with my hair?" "Give me product recommendations”) will be removed. Please post general requests for help/recommendations in the stickied Haircare Advice megathread, or rewrite this post to have a more specific question. Read more about what makes a post specific vs. vague here

  4. No repetitive posts - In order to keep the subreddit uncluttered, questions that are frequently posted will be removed. Before posting, use the search bar first to see if your question has already been discussed.

  5. This is a science subreddit - This is not the place to ask for styling preferences - try other hairstyling subreddits for that. Pseudoscience, chemophobia, or other anti-science rhetoric will be removed and repeat offenders banned.

  6. No advertising - Advertising a product without any scientific discussion is prohibited. If you are affiliated with any product you must disclose your relationship. You may discuss your products as long as you have disclosed your relationship and have been flaired as a product representative. Product recommendations are allowed as long as it is not repetitive and you do not ask to take the conversations to DM or post affiliate links. We have a zero tolerance policy for advertising or promoting MLMs.

  7. Be respectful - Scientific arguments may sometimes occur, but always treat other users with respect. No harassment/racism/sexism/etc. will be tolerated. If you are combative or rude when others ask you to provide sources, you may be banned. This rule also applies to your communication with the mod team.

  8. No asking for advice on balding or hair loss of any kind. - If you have any questions about hair loss, balding or thinning please consult a medical professional. Other subreddits you might be interested in include r/tressless and r/askdocs.

  9. This is not a product review sub. - Product ingredient lists don't really tell us much about the product; formulation matters. If you're looking for product reviews, try another sub, or google it. Same applies to posts asking for dupes of a specific product. Posts asking for help checking a product ingredient list for "harsh" or "harmful" ingredients will be removed as it promotes chemophobia.

  10. This is not a hair coloring or styling sub. - For hair color advice, try r/hairdye or r/fancyfollicles. For hair styling advice, start at r/hair.

  11. This is not a DYI sub. - There is a perfectly good DIY subreddit, r/DIYbeauty. Post homegrown product questions and other DYI fair product questions to that sub.

Asking Advice?

  1. Read the articles in the sidebar first - they may answer your question
  2. Have a concrete question. Posts that only ask what is "wrong" with one's hair or what products to use without any information about why you're asking this question are subject to removal.
  3. Include details about your hair type and existing haircare routine.

Regaining Thickness

So since my childhood I had super super thick long hair , but overtime as I had been dyeing them , they’re just much thinner now .

They keep getting longer but the same old thickness is never there . Is it ever gonna be possible to regain the same thickness? I’ve been super upset over it 😞 ( I’m 20 F)

Hair care question for blonde hair

I just brightened my hair last week, and before I did it, I was using Redken High Bright shampoo and conditioner. However, I was wondering if it would be better to switch to a color friendly shampoo and conditioner instead.

If anyone could give any insight on what would work best, I will be forever grateful.

Hair maintenance question

When you get a reperm do the previously permed parts of the hair lock on to the structure of the new rods or do they have the same structure as the old ones they locked on to?

How to determine penetrating ability of hair oils

I am getting conflicting answers online. According to this scientific article, "penetration and the protection of the medium-chain fatty acid was significantly better than those of the long-chain fatty acid, and that MCT oil and coconut oil were not significantly different."

Which means poly saturated and long chain fatty acids don't penetrate. Which excludes sunflower oil. The Science-y blog lists sunflower oil as highly penetrable.

So does anyone have any more credible source? BTW I'm aware that number of carbon atoms isn't the only indicator but it's still a significant one.

Started taking care of my hair and now I’m getting coils

I always had curly hair, but now that I’ve started making sure my hair is hydrated I’ve noticed the the back of my head is starting to form very loose coils, which I find very cool, I’m wondering if it’ll start to form all around my head or will the coils just most likely stay at the back of my head?

Save curly hair

I dyed my hair dark red in April of 2023. And re-dyed it September and again in November. It’s now April 2024 and I dyed it a dark ash brown but it still looks red in certain lighting. I wish it wasn’t red but I refuse to further damage it so I’ll accept this for now. My curls are pretty limp and a lot less defined after spending a year dying it.

My question is how to incorporate different bonding/protein treatments? I have the Curlsmith Bond Curl Rehab Salve Hair Treatment and know to use it every 3-4 washes. I wanted to get the aphrogee Two Step Protein Treatment & Balanced Moisturizer treatments but how soon after dying my hair should I use it? Also can I have both products in my routine or should I exchange the curlsmith for something that I can use more frequently? I ultimately want something I can do weekly, every month and every few months to bring my curls back.

Hair elasticity

I have fine, mid-length, straight hair. When my hair is wet, it’s stretchy as heck. Can stretch to like 2x it’s self. But when it’s dry my hair has very minimal, if any stretch to it. If I pull on a strand it usually just snaps immediately. What is this? What’s causes it? Is it bad? Does this mean more protein? Or more moisture?

Cosmetic Chemists: Isopropyl Alcohol and Alcohol Denat in Hair Care?

Hello, is someone able to explain the role of these alcohols in hair care products? Are they drying to the hair in hair care products or am I missing some role they play in the formulation?

For example Garnier, Fructis, Sleek & Shine, Intensely Smooth Leave-In Conditioning Cream, Frizzy, Dry, Unmanageable Hair, 10.2 fl oz (300 ml). This product lists isopropyl alcohol as the 9th ingredient.

The complete ingredients is: Water, cetearyl alcohol, amodimethicone, cetyl esters, behentrimonium chloride, parfum/fragrance, phenoxyethanol, pyrus malus fruit extract/apple fruit extract, isopropyl alcohol, trideceth-6, argania spinosa kernel oil, niacinamide, pyridoxine hcl, hexyl cinnamal, chlorhexidine dihydrochloride, citric acid, cetrimonium chloride, saccharum officinarum extract/sugar cane extract, benzyl alcohol, linalool, amyl cinnamal, tocopherol, hydroxypropyltrimonium lemon protein, ci 19140/yellow 5, citrus limon extract/ lemon peel extract, ci 15985/yellow 6, camellia sinensis leaf extract. leuconostoc/radish root ferment filtrate, caprylyl glycol.

Also I have a question about glycerine, is it bad for damaged hair? I've been hearing water is damaging to the hair, so should an ingredient like glycerine be avoided by someone who has damaged hair due to its ability to hold onto moisture or does it hold onto beneficial ingredients and not water? I would love an explanation to this.

Thank you and hopefully one of you are up for answering my questions :)

I just bleached my roots 7 days ago and at the longest spot my roots are 1cm long. Is this genetics? And if so does that mean my hair always grows at this rate?

How to gain my curls back?

So I had a keratin hair treatment about a year ago, and I always had curls but I never wore them. But now my hair is in this middle ground of curly and straight. It's super curly in the back but kinda straight in the front. I've done a lot to remove my keratin but nothing has worked. I wanted to try box dying it to kinda wash off and maybe start wearing my hair. What should I do?

Ps:I have dark hair and I'm middle Eastern and I haven't colored my hair

'Rinse and repeat' with two different shampoos?

I hope this subject is enough to warrant a post, for clarification I mean it more as a general question than a request for personal advice-- but I did share what I personally use as an example.

I always thought the 'rinse and repeat' instructions on shampoo was 100% a trick to get consumers to use more shampoo, but after trying it out I was surprised to find out my hair did in fact get cleaner by washing it twice. The second one lathers significantly better and it makes it much easier to clean.

But since my shampoo is fairly expensive (Kevin Murphy Plumping Wash), I was wondering if it's recommended to use a 'basic' shampoo before fancy shampoo so the second one can get a good lather? Like, could I use some dollar-store Head & Shoulders shampoo for the first round of shampooing so the Kevin Murphy shampoo can get a good lather? Or are there any special shampoos that are made for this purpose?

Obviously what works well differs from person to person, but I'm curious to learn what the options are ^^

Blow drying on low heat/cold?

Hi all, I’m an Asian male who typically wears their hair in a medium length middle part. I’m thinking about going to a shorter hair style which requires me to blow dry for texture. In the past, I would blow dry on low heat or using the cold setting, constantly moving the drier around to prevent any damage. It’s been a while since I’ve done this so I just wanted to see if this is a healthy way of drying/styling my hair, and if this is something that I can do every day without any damage? It is important to note as well that I do have thinning around the hairline, which is the one factor that has changed since the last time I adopted this technique. Thank you all in advance!

Hairdresser told me that I should wait 3 days to get my hair wet after Cezanne keratin treatment but website says you can wash immediately. Which is correct?

My hair looks gross and greasy and it’s only been 2 days - very tempted to wash it but don’t want to ruin a $400 process. Would love to hear if maybe she’s basing the 3 days on other treatments she’s done and being overly cautious or if it’s fine for me to at least wet my hair even if I don’t shampoo it.

Dr.FORHAIR Folligen Sea Salt Scaler Scalp Scrub ruining my hair?

I started using this salt scrub after seeing numerous videos about Korean hair care products and I found this bottle in nyc at a shop in ktown and decided to try it because I suffer from a dry and itchy scalp. However after applying this salt scrub and scrubbing for 2-3 minutes when I go to rinse it out my hair feels STIFF?? like when you put hair gel and after it dries your hair clumps into wet stiff bundles. I tried washing with shampoo after but some parts are still left feeling like over processed bleached hair (like melty) and even with using a hairdryer these parts just refuse to dry like the rest of my normal hair. I haven’t dyed my hair with anything it’s virgin black. I’m wondering what I’m doing if wrong, the instructions are in Korean so I can’t read it, I’m wondering if me using warm water to wash my hair is melting the salt and it’s making my hair hard? It’s really hard to wash out no matter how throughly I try to rinse it out.

How do I use this product correctly to avoid these rigid and stiff clumps of hair?

Haircare Advice Megathread - Week of April 06, 2024

Hello r/haircarescience! Welcome to our weekly megathread for haircare advice.

This is your place to freely ask for personal advice on styling, coloring, product recommendations or any other burning questions you may have about hair care that may not warrant its own thread due to the rules currently in place.

Medical advice and questions are still prohibited along with spamming and advertising.

Please make sure that you include this information when asking a question. This will be enforced.

  • Hair type: (fine, coarse, thick, thin)
  • Hair texture: Straight/wavy/curly/coiled
  • History of chemical processing: (Coloring/straightening/perms/use of heat styling)
  • Hygiene regimen: (daily, twice weekly, once weekly shampoo and conditioning)
  • Style: (Blunt cut/layered/bob or waist length)
  • Product regimen: (State products, whether you are actively avoiding sulfates or silicones or following any particular regimen)

The normal "source your facts" rule do not apply here as individual professional opinion mostly comes from personal taste or anecdotal evidence. We simply ask that you don't state your advice as fact. The opinion of one individual may not represent the opinion of a profession as a whole. Hairdressers this is your time to shine!

Any posts asking for personal advice that are made throughout the week will be redirected here. This post will remain stickied until the end of the week.

We hope you enjoy this format and if you have any feedback please let the mod team know!

Can protein reduce hair shedding?

I’ve dealt with undiagnosed hair shedding for a very long time now. It’s not genetic, wasn’t always like this, but my blood tests are normal so doctors don’t really care.

Anyway I recently used a protein hair product and feel like my hair is shedding a lot less, to the point it might make a long term difference. I’m not sure if it’s just a fluke though, and how often to use it or anything like that, so I’m prodding for some information. Could protein indeed make your hair stronger and overtime then thicker because it isn’t shedding as much? How do I tell when my hair has a good balance of protein and when to stop using it?

Why do we switch from gentle baby/children shampoos to adult products?

Babies and young children’s hair always feels so soft and so much cleaner, I understand it’s very new to the world so not as damaged, polluted, etc…but if these shampoos are gentle enough for baby’s hair or a young child’s hair, why do we switch from them into adulthood?

Is there science behind the product switch or is it more rooted in society/culture? Would, say me a 30 year old female, using baby shampoo/conditioner on my hair be damaging?

Hair drying times

So I have incredibly short hair (mullet, the longest parts are about 3 to 4 inches long.) I have very thick hair, a lot of hair, but not a lot in terms of length. It’s also curly/wavy, if I had to guess it’s probably around 2B. My hair takes a good 2 hours to dry, sometimes more!

Is it because I have low porosity?? What is that, is it a problem? My hair has always dried this slowly, it’s not a new thing I’ve developed. If it is a problem, why? And also how would I fix it?

I’ve never dyed or bleached my hair if that makes any difference!

I was able to go an extra day without washing after doing a coconut oil mask. Why?

Background: I have very, very oily hair. I am a daily washer and use Ouai clarifying shampoo every shower. I always wash twice, only condition the very ends of my hair, keep my hairbrushes clean — aka, I follow all the rules, I just have super oily hair!

I went to a spa a few months back and got a head massage add-on. She used coconut oil and I was SO scared I would never get it washed out, my hair would be greasy for a whole week, etc. But I washed my hair like usual and afterwards, it felt AMAZING.

So I did the same thing at home two days ago. I grabbed a small, quarter sized amount, warmed it up in my hands, massaged my scalp for a minute or so and brought the excess down to my ends. Clipped it up for two hours, then double shampooed with my Ouai detox shampoo.

Again, boom, soft, gorgeous, and NOT oily! I usually wash my hair every night, but last night, it looked perfectly fine so I skipped. This hardly ever happens. So r/haircarescience — what’s the science behind this? Is it the same concept of oil breaks down oil? I know some people say “your hair is dry and the oil is overcompensating!” but I think we’ve all debunked that myth, as that’s not how skin works.

My hairs have identity crisis

Hey, when i was younger ( 0-15) i had straight hair. Now then it started to change. I had slightly wavy hair then it grew out still wavy hair. Then at the age of 16 they were kinda wavy but in a weird way and then till then the back of my hair was very wavy then the sites were wavy/straight and the front a little bit wavy. Now i am 17 and my hair structure depends on the day but the waves always stay but they sometimes get stronger sometimes flatter. The problem is on the front part 1 week ago a very big lock (many little strains which make 1 big lock) just „spawned" (created itself) now i have a very obvious lock on the frontest and most seeable part and the rest is wavy with mood swings. I do not understand my hair. Will all my hair turn into curls or will the curl go away or what will happen now? What is the cause of this? Is there anything i can do?

What actually is hair protectant?

Especially in those 23-in-1 products that protect your hair from heat damage, make it look shiny, eliminate frizz, have 1,000 years of hold, file your taxes, heal your childhood trauma, etc. What is the ingredient or formulation behind the heat protection claim? Is there scientific basis behind the heat protectant claim or is it mostly marketing?

How can I get after sleep hair texture on purpose?

I have naturally thick, curly hair. When I get up in the morning or take an afternoon nap, my hair becomes really curly, which I love. When I take a shower, they lose their natural curl and become straight/wavy, which they maintain for an extended period of time. I'd like to have my early morning texture after a shower and would appreciate any suggestions/tips!

Is washing hair 2 times a day harmful?

I have really fine and straight hair so I need to wash my hair everyday in order the look good. I recently started using texture powder to style it but I heard its bad for your hair to leave it in overnight. If I wash my hair in the morning and before sleeping will it damage my hair in the long term?

Applying hair oil on damp hair

I've never done this before, my hair is shiny and moisturized on the scalp area but the root and the end of my hair is dry. I just cut my hair few weeks ago and it's still the same

I also tried a new shampoo and it made my hair smooth and soft, but it's still looks dry and feels dry (But not as bad as before). I'm not a fan of hair cream and i have a hair oil that i bought few months ago but i rarely use it

I heard applying hair oil on damp hair will help lock moisture of the hair and good for dry hair. However i have some questions:

  1. Is it a good idea to apply oil right after i dry my hair with towel?
  2. Would it make my hair air dry slower than usual?
  3. If applied with correct amount, If i blow dry my hair (when i need to), would the oil be transferred to my hand when i touch my hair when i blow dry? Would it also be safe to apply oil on damp hair and blow dry it?
