[PSA] Scents and perfumes in your skincare poses potential risks

I really do not care if you want to use scents in your skincare. It's your business. I just want those who do not realize that there are potential risks to have the chance to educate themselves. I highly recommend watching this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0_i29f2h7h0

I just used an old tactic to try to keep away as many of those who think that perfumes in skincare pose zero dangers. I hope it pays off and people who have questions are able to ask them safely. Feel free to ask about allergens, contact dermatitis, or anything else.

[anti-aging] introducing tretinoin

Plan on starting two nights a week with lowest dose tretinoin cream, using moisturizer beforehand to eliminate irritation. On days I don’t use it, should I be using retinol? Any advice is appreciated!

[acne] Does anyone find pimple patches work better at certain times of their menstrual cycle?

I was battling some cystic acne right before my period started. For 3 days straight I used pimple patches with very little result. The patch absorbed a tiny bit of gunk, but barely any, and the pimple was still very inflamed--and this was even with my using a sterile needle/clean fingers to get things going.

Lo and behold, the morning I woke up and my period had started, bam! Not only had the patch absorbed a ton of gunk from the pimple itself, but even from surrounding pores that I hadn't touched. The pimple was suddenly much flatter and less inflamed.

This led me to wonder: We talk about bloating or "retaining water" at certain times of our menstrual cycle. Could it be that my body was "holding onto" fluid before my period, and that this would impact the patch's ability to absorb it?

I know it could be a coincidence and "holding onto" sounds unscientific, but I'm interested if it's something others have experienced.

[PSA] Friendly reminder to never use retinoids on your neck if you consistently use a bathing glove to shower

I almost exclusively use a bathing glove (the abrasive kind) in my evening shower because I feel it gives me a deeper clean and I'd go in with prescription adapalene afterwards. I had been doing it for like 5 days until yesterday when I noticed my neck had become very itchy and I immediately knew it was the adapalene since I hadn't changed anything else in my body care routine.

I don't know why it didn't occur to me that I was double exfoliating but I'm now trying to heal my very itchy and scaly neck.

[Product Question] Lash lift questions- Sunscreen, Cerave, and waterproof mascara

Hello! I just got my first lash lift yesterday. I have a few questions about safe products. After the first 24-48 hours, if I use pretty intense sweatproof sunscreen (Shiseido Anessa) should I avoid my eyes? If some sweats down, will it mess them up?

I use CeraVe Foaming Facial Cleanser for oily skin to remove my sunscreen, followed by PanOxyl face wash. If the CeraVe is strong enough to remove even waterproof makeup, will it mess up the lashes?

And finally, if the CeraVe IS safe because it's not oil based, can I still use waterproof mascara if I don't need an oil cleanser to remove it? Are all the anti-waterproof makeup instructions just based on avoiding oil cleansers on the lifted lashes?

Thanks!

Any recommendations/suggestions for my routine? [Routine Help]

Hi! I saw one of these graphics and couldn’t resist making my own.

My routine is as pictured. I have normal/dry skin, and I’m mostly focusing on “anti-aging” and keeping my skin healthy and moisturized. I’ll slug with Aquaphor or Vaseline most nights too. My skin has been a tad dryer and flaky (due to the Taz) and I was wondering if there’s any product I should add/change that could help with that, or if there’s anything else I should add in general. Thank you!

Is it okay if I use Garnier Micellar Water for my eczema prone skin? If not, I need product recommendations [Product Request]

Hii! I'm (17F) starting to invest in skincare because I'm tired of looking at my face full of dark spots, acne, and open pores. I mindlessly started listing for what skincare products I should buy, and I remembered that I have a lot of skin complications.

For context, my face's skin type is combination (oily and dry skin), and overall my skin type is dry and sensitive. I also have eczema (idk what type) on some parts of my body. When I told my mother about it, she told me I should avoid products that contains harsh chemicals, products with fragrance, paraben, alcohol and anything that has acid in it (Salicylic acid, etc.)

My boyfriend recently bought me Garnier Micellar Water Cleanser as a starter for my skincare routine, which is perfect for my skin, if I didn't have eczema, and the product contains Salicylic acid. I've tried to find answers on the internet if the product is safe for eczema prone skin, but I'm still not sure (can't trust the internet these days). I don't know what Salicylic BHA means because it is mentioned on the front of the product. I need help...

[Product Question] Your favorite OTC azelaic acid?

(Niacinamide kills my skin)

Hey! I'm kinda stuck with my azelaic acid search. TO works fine but the silicone thing is not ideal, I feel I need a larger amount because it just slides around.

The inkey list one is great texture wise but broke me the f out. I really wanted to try Peach Slices(?) but I'm in Sweden and cheapest shipping was $50 🫠🫠🫠

I was open to try PC but I saw that it had SA in it and my sensitive skin freaks out, and atm my budget is too thin to take a chance on a product that expensive. People with sensitive skin - how did that one work out for you?

[Misc] Pore size reduction/removal methods?

Please any products or surgeries to close up my pores? A few pores on my face are seriously bringing down my overall appearance and it's likely the first thing people see when they come face to face.

Mugwort Essence: 1 Month [Review]

Hi all!

I have been using the I'm From: Mugwort Essence for a month and just wanted to drop a review. For reference, I have combination and acne-prone skin, leaning towards the oilier side. I was on high-prescription roaccutane for 7 months, and my acne remained clear for 6 months after completion; however, I have had an acne recurrence for the last 2 months. My nightly routine prior to using the essence was as follows:

  1. no.7 cleansing balm
  2. Cerave cream to foam cleanser
  3. Elf pure skin toner
  4. Aveeno triple oat serum
  5. Cerave moisturing lotion

My Elf toner ran out so I swapped it for the mugwort. Over the few weeks before I started using the essence, my skin was extremely irritated for seemingly no reason and I was dealing with new red and inflamed spots every couple of days. The first night that I used the essence, I woke up to my skin looking less red and my pimples already looking calmer. I have consistently used the essence every night since and I have found that it has kept my breakouts at bay, sped up the healing process of acne I did have, and has soothed my irritated skin.

Overall, I am super impressed with the mugwort essence so far. I would highly recommend it if you are prone to redness and breakouts. It has a very soothing and calming effect that I love for my skin, as well as the ability to add moisture to my face.

[product request] Sunscreen that won’t make crepey undereyes worse?

Looking for product recs for a (mineral or non-US chemical filter) sunscreen to use under my eyes that won’t make my already crepey looking undereyes look worse.

I use only physical/mineral sunscreens as I seem to be sensitive to most US chemical sunscreen filters.

I currently use MD Solar Sciences mineral sunscreen for my face and have been using Native mineral for body. Both work well, but any mineral sunscreen I’ve ever tried to use under my eyes seems to end up drying me out and making the crepiness so much more pronounced that I just end up not using anything under my eyes at all. I know I’m not doing myself any favors with that, so if anyone has any recommendations for a hydrating/non-drying option it would be appreciated!

[Product Question] The Ordinary 1% Retinol in Squalane formula change?

I just received a new bottle after my last one (purchased in October 2023) ran out. The old one took forever to sink into my skin, but only using it before bed I never minded.

Cut to this new bottle, and it soaked into my skin (same routine as always, nothing else new as I'm pretty consistent) after about 30 seconds. I was pretty surprised as this was not what I was used to at all.

Has the formulation changed? Was my old bottle/new bottle bad? Help!

Salicylic Acid and Tretinoin [Routine Help]

Hi everyone. My cosmetologist prescribed a Salicylic Acid face wash and toner, and 0.1% Tretinoin. She recommended I wash and tone with the SA first, then apply the Tret at night. I’m confused- I’ve always been told not to mix SA with retinoids. Should I do as she says? For context I have cystic acne and bad scarring.

moles & anxiety [Miscellaneous] [Misc]

Helloo lovlies, i am very very anxious over my moles (especially 2-3 on my back, as i had a very bad sun burn a year back + couple sunburns as a kid).

i went to a dermatologist in November 2023 and he looked at them, said they look fine and to come back if they bleed/itch.

went in for a second opinion and for a full body mole check-up and i pointed out my concerns to the dermatologist. he looked at all my moles with a derma-scope and he said all look fine and took pics of the two moles i am worried about. he said they are multi-pigmented but the skin under and them look fine. he said to come back in a year unless i see any changes/itchiness/bleeding.

i went back in after 2 months to the second dermatologist cause i felt like ants crawling on my back and i freaked out. i was crying in his office over skin cancer scare. he looked again at the moles and reassured me that they are fine - and i suggested to remove them and he said that we will have to biopsy them as there is always a 1% they are cancerous. i did not do anything about it tho until 1 week ago.

one week ago i went to our public health centers and saw a dermatologist, i honestly thought she will say the same. she looked at the moles on my back and said they looked fine. but then asked me if i have an old pic of them - i said no. then said that we will remove them as a precaution.

now i am freaking out. like FREAKING OUT. my removal surgery is still in a week and i cannot stop thinking about the what ifs and my anxiety is making me paralyzed and in constant fear. what should i expect? how do i deal with this? what do i do? i hate waiting so much and i cannot stop freaking out - and now i feel like my back is itchy and painful.

sorry for the long post :(

Is cleansing with micellar water morning and night sufficient for cleansing my face and neck? [routine help]

I'm a 31 year old female, and I don't do any other cleansing, except cleansing with the micellar water both morning and night daily- is that sufficient for cleansing or should I be cleansing with something else?

After the micellar water in the morning, I use vitamin C serum, eye cream and sun cream, and in the evening after the micellar water cleansing I use a retinoid and a moisturiser. I'm mainly doing it for anti-aging.

[Acne] Question about routine for tret/BP/clindamycin

Hi everyone, thank you in advance. I have acne problems (I know, shocking :(). I have tried tretinoin for 9 weeks now and no luck. So, my doctor prescribed me with "CLINDAMYCIN-BENZOYL PEROX 1-5%" and "BENZOYL PEROXIDE 5% WASH" alongside my tretinoin (it's a low dosage but he didn't want to increase it since l'm introducing more products now). But I'm confused on what goes first, what goes after, what I wash off, etc for AM and then for PM. Here is what I'm thinking:

AM: • Cetaphil cleanser • Clindamycin/BP cream • Benzoyl peroxide wash • Lotion • Sunscreen PM: • Cetaphil cleanser • Tretinoin • Lotion

Thank you!! Specially the wash and cream with BP I am not sure which goes first.

Pure Cosmetic Glycerin Has Been My Best Skincare Purchase in 5 Years [Review]

I finally had to accept the fact that I can't do hyaluronic acid. I did damp skin, wet skin, all kinds of occlusives to seal the moisture in. So many different kinds of HA serums. It was the same story every time: my skin felt like a leather handbag in a few hours. It was shiny on the surface and had a slight residue from the moisturizer, but under the moisturizer, my face felt tight. When I smiled, I felt my skin pulling and I got dehydration lines. Two or three hours after doing my skincare routine, I had to go in with a second layer of heavy moisturizer to try to relieve the dehydration. I even tried a room humidifier and I hate humid air. I drank more water - that helped by maybe 20%.

So I tried going without HA. I did rosewater, aloe and other things for hydration. It worked sometimes. As long as I kept my cleanser really gentle and didn't use any actives, my skin was about 50% better than on HA. But seeing as I'm someone who needs BHA and retinol in my life, this wasn't good enough. Also, it's just depressing to be in your early 20's and have skin so dehydrated you can barely do anything with it.

Someone (I think maybe here on Reddit) mentioned that you can use pure cosmetic glycerin and when I googled it, Dr Dray (among other people) was discouraging from it and saying it's pointless as a standalone product, as it's already in everything (she then said it's too sticky and proceeded to pour out half a palm's worth of glycerin to show how sticky it is - I mean, duh? What do you think hyaluronic acid would be like if you used that much of it?) This time I did the opposite of what derms were saying and just got the glycerin.

I applied two cautious drops of it onto damp skin. And oh my God. My skin felt REVIVED. The moisturizer I'd been using for 4 years, and proceeded to use afterwards, felt suddenly way too heavy and rich. I went from using creams for atopic dermatitis to using a moisturizer for normal skin. I can use my BHA toner now without feeling like a mummy. I can even use adapalene (twice a week max, though)!

It might be the cheapest product I've bought in years (and it's definitely the cheapest if I think of how long that bottle will last) and it's a total game changer. Why did people try to persuade me that it would be a pointless purchase because it's already in everything? Those 1-2 tiny drops made ALL THE DIFFERENCE. I'm just praying this isn't a temporary effect and that my skin won't become immune to it (I am unlucky sometimes) lmao

Can fine lines go away? [Anti-Aging]

I'm sure this has been asked before but my situation is kind of specific. I'm only 22, in my family no one really wrinkles unless they're about 40, I don't smoke and don't drink.

Now I'm not sure about the reasons. I've had really bad depression and constant stress to the point I spent half a year in bed and barely any food with mostly one meal a day or none. My sleep schedule was a complete mess, mostly 4-6 hours every night but to be fair I didn't waste any energy laying in bed all day so it didn't feel too bad. Now having had a babyface my entire life suddenly I have really bad fine lines around my mouth. They stay when I smile and even when my face is relaxed they just stay. I don't know if my skin is dehydrated (I tend to have dry skin anyway). And judging lack of food and water it probably got worse. I've been hydrating like crazy for 3 days but so far not even a slight result. (also fixing my sleep schedule and food intake ofc and I'm aware results take time). I'm worried it'll stay that way cause I'm only 22 looking like 30.

A picture would be helpful, sorry for that but I al uncomfortable with uploading one. They basically look like smile lines in full length.

I stopped retinol and vitamin c for now to rehydrate my face first so I will use those in a week or two. Also taking fish oil capsules.

Edit: I probably should've added my current routine.

AM: wash face with water only moisturiser with no knicknacks (sensitive skin) olive oil sunscreen

PM: wash face with gentle cleanser moisturiser oil again

aside from routine: yogurt or honey face mask

Moisturizer burns [Product Question]

Ive been using benzoyl peroxide (5%) when I apply this it has never burned, ever started of with 2.5 and now using 5, however when I use moisturizer I have a strong burning sensation, so I hardly ever do it. However when I do use it, it burns. Why is this? I hear benzoyl peroxide has a burning sensation too but ive never felt that.

Skincare order [Product Question] [Acne]

I’m currently double cleansing but I stopped because I noticed a couple of pimples forming so I started just using cerave hydrating cleanser (the green one) then I started applying la roche posay spot treatment effaclar duo and it seems to be working. However, i just had the question is it possible for me to still double cleanse then use the spot treatment effaclar duo? Or should I just stick to a basic cleanser like the cerave mentioned before. The double cleansing I use is the Anua pore cleansing oil and the Anua water based cleanser which seem to be working fine as well. I just started breaking it out because of stress due to school. So I know it has nothing to do with the products since I’ve been using them for a while and my face was fine until I started stressing over exams and projects. My main question is as mentioned is it ok to double cleanse then apply the spot treatment or would that be too many products and cause a reaction?
