Right before work tonight (I start work at midnight), I finished the Final Empire. It was madness, pure madness. My spouse was talking to me and I only vaguely remember nodding in response to them. I didn't eat. I didn't even drink my tea, because who needs caffeine when you're at the end of a Sanderson book and your head is simultaneously spinning and exploding?
After I finished, I looked up at the blank wall in front of me for about 30 seconds, going "Woah" repeatedly, then said "Welp," and went to go get Well of Ascension off of my shelf. I opened it, read the first sentence, then my alarm went off to get ready for work.
Thank you, Sanderson, for making me fall in love with fantasy and reading again. Thank you for giving me a distraction from crap going on in my life. But damn it, come on man. Right before my shift?? Really?
I feel like I want to just lock myself in my apartment for weeks, call out of work, and just binge everything the dude has written. I don't think I've felt this way since high school, and even back then I felt this way about videogames, not books. But yeah, consider this my appreciation "I'm addicted" post.
Heyo! I made these Kolos and Inquisitor drawings a year ago after finishing the Hero of Ages. I hope you like them!
I did it on audible multiple times speed I’m not completely insane
I’m on part four of Well of Ascension, so please no spoilers beyond that.
I’m reading mistborn for the first time after reading Stormlight Archive, and I’ve been enjoying the books so far.
I specifically like how the first book reminded me of “The Sting” (old people will know the reference), and how the second book introduced a Battlestar Gallactica, who is the cylon, mystery (more old people reference).
That being said, despite liking Vin in the first book, I’m having a hard time liking her in the second one. The whole “he doesn’t deserve me” Elend conflict is too much YA for my taste, and the chapter that she attacks Cett with Zane made me put the book aside for a few minutes to recollect my thoughts and remind myself that Brandon delivers.
Am I the only one to have a hard time with Vin in the second book? I’m still determined to read the series in full, but I was hoping for some encouragement because I’m not as pumped as I was with SA (which I read multiple times)
Just finished well of ascension, and my goodness I haven’t read for three hours straight in a long time, the sanderlanche is no joke. Can’t wait to jump into book 3 tomorrow. I thought the first chuck was slow burning. Totally worth it for the back stretch. Book one I enjoyed more, but this was still fantastic absolutely.
!Wayne's death hurt a lot. Just as much as Vin, Elend and the rest of the crew. I felt it coming... but it still hurt so much. I was surprised to see some people actually didn't like Wayne! That was shocking to me. The mistborn series IS my favorite series of all time. Now that I am done... I am not sure anything will be as good as it... besides maybe the stormlight archive which is what I will start soon after a short break. But yea, I am depressed, broken inside, and wish there was more! More mistborn, more Kelsier, more everything... what a masterpiece of books!!<
So I know for me that WoA sits on the low end of the Mistborn and maybe even Cosmere rankings in my mind. But with my partner listening to it for the first time I got to experience again two of my absolute favorite scenes back to back. The simple character driven moments with Breeze and Clubs, then Sazed and Tindwyl might be one of my favorite couple of conversations in all the Cosmere.
I’m at the part where TenSoon is revealed - and I’m not sure if I understand. Is OreSuer dead or just displaced in some way?
If it’s RAFO that’s fine, I just wasn’t sure I understood
I’m officially a fan now. Halfway through Well of Ascension and addicted. For years I’ve wanted to go to a fan convention of some kind and never made the opportunity. I’m 27 so it’s about time, and as an academic I realized I’d be a Terrisman keeper and would love to go as one. Does anybody know of conventions in the northeast? Or better yet, in Philadelphia?
What's the physical body of preservation after all? The mists or lerasium? If both, how? Why does ruin only have atium as its' body while preservation has both the metal and the mists
I just want to understand why was Wax forced to kill Lessie again ? I'm shedding tears rn.. Why was it that she had to die in her Lessie form ? She could have died in some other person's shape ..
!Was Marsh already under the influence of Ruin at the start of WoA? Did he bring Sazed there so that he in turn could give the information of Kwaan's message to Vin and steer her towards the well?!<
!I just finished WoA and I can't stop thinking about Marsh's and Sazed's visit to the conventical early in the book, as well as what's revealed about Kwaan's message at the end of it. I originally googled my question, and then looked at the wiki, thinking that this specific question would have a clear answer, or that it was just something regarded as obvious by most readers, that I somehow missed. I still can't find the answer, so I'm asking here instead.!<
!I feel like I'm missing something. By the end of the book it seems we're led to understand that Marsh as well as the other inquisitors are already under the control of ruin (did it always have this control?). Marsh is the one urging Sazed to return to Luthadel. He also splits off from Sazed in the conventical to search the upper floors alone. Was this too just part of a ruse to let Sazed discover the etching?!<
!Am I overthinking this and assigning Ruin too much agency this early in the story, or is the deception even this early so obvious to other readers (even though I missed it) that its hard to find the answer specifically answered online? Would love to hear your thoughts.!<
Made me a Wax mtg card alter for the decklist I'm working on. Think this is a fun enough rule text for Wax. Next up, Wayne. I'm thinking Karlach, Fury of Avernus honestly.
I'm reading Mistborn: The Final Empire for the first time and I'm wondering if skaa are a creature like somewhat of a class, can someone please clear this up for me? (BTW this is my first Brandon Sanderson book that im reading so please try to avoid spoilers thank you.)
I just finished this little doll I made of Vin and I think she turned out so cute!! 🥰
!I just finished reading part four and im so devastated 😭 kelsier was such an amazing character and he truly cared for his crew and for his cause. I’m so sad for vin too because of her finally having someone she loves and trusted :(( the saddest part was him dying with a smile on his face 😭!<
Rust and Ruin…. I just realized a lot more things were part of Preservation’s plan than the story let on.
Rashek’s Ascension, Empire, and his death. Vin releasing Ruin. The Mists appearing every night. And the advent of publicly aware Allomancy during the Final Empire. These were all part of Leras’ plan…
Ruin’s body at the Pits of Hathsin existed for several millennia, but every bit of atium needed to be burned at the right moment. Leras needed an Allomancer to take up Preservation then kill Ruin. He needed a rebellious Feruchemist to tap all the memories in their copperminds, and take up both Preservation and Ruin.
Sanderson confirmed in the annotation of HoA chapter 70 that Preservation, before imprisoning Ruin, set up the Mists to appear every time the Well of Ascension was nearly full. And then, I presume, the Mists disappear. The Mists appearing every night during the Final Empire is an anomaly.
None of the aforementioned steps could happen without a consistent force attuning the Allomancer to Preservation, or an army that knows the existence of Allomancy, or the setup of a system that prevents Ruin from immediately reabsorbing the atium at the Pits. There needed to be a Feruchemist with reason to be rebellious and fill their copperminds with so much information. And they couldn’t have been the Hero with half of the hybrid Shard “locked away” and weakened.
Leras trusted that Rashek live and die so the final stops towards the Hero of Ages could be accomplished. He predicted the burning of all atium, and the apotheosis of his immediate successor, should manifest during the Final Empire. Even if he no longer remembered by the time of Secret History.
I would also postulate that, among other things, he trusted Kelsier to destroy all the atium at the Pits of Hathsin. A freed Ruin would immediately go there, reabsorb the atium, and destroy Scadrial. But because Kelsier destroyed the Pits, Ruin was forced to follow Rashek’s tricky trail.
Disclaimer: This post is not an attack on any religion or religious belief of anyone, including Brandon Sanderson. I might personylly heavily disagree with a lot of Mormom Teachings, but I'm a firm believer in the fact that ones approach to religion is very individual and I won't judge anyone based on the religious club, they are a member of. Also I'm European and was raised Lutheran which is one of the two main flavours of Christianity over here, while Momonism doesn't play any major role, so I can't really say anything insightful about it's place in moder US-society apart from what I know from the Internet.
So, from time to time I stuble across the online discourse wen all know and love (?) about Brandons religion. Critical voices often point it out, whiel Brandons defnders are often quick to explain, that his personal beliefs, whatever they might be do not feature in any of his works of fiction.
I I just can't disagree more strongly. Next other things, like beeing a pretty cool heist-story, having an innovatie magic system and characters people seem to like, Mistborn Era I seems to be basically "Mormonism - The Fantasy Version". Honestly it's so present through the whole story.
Final Empire ist the story of a slim goodlooking blonde guy, who is a convicted criminal. This formerly convicted criminal seems to charismatic enough, to gather a fellowship of people he promises a new world and salvation from the evil religion that is governing the place in the moment. He promises to get this done with a specuial supernatural tool made out of metal only he has and only he uses, an artifact whichs exsitance is doubted among his critics. Our blonde ex-con can't fulfill his plans because he is prematurely murderes by the defender of the status quo, thereby becoming a martyr and the bedrock of a new religion.
Its Mormonism. It's not subtle. It's the origin of Mormonism. And jsut to make it more obvious, in Part II, they discover the history of an ancient people, written down on metal plates (!) after the downfall of the chosen one of that ancient time.
How is this all not Brandons take on Mormonism?
I know, I know. This is post number 14 billion about a possible movie, but I wanted to tackle this from a different angle. Namely the harsh part of adapting a book into a movie.
What goes?
Who and what do you cut to get the runtime down to an acceptable rate. The skaa rebellion? Some of the lesser focused on crew? Gimme your best ideas
And bonus question, what effects or cool stuff would you do effects wise?
Call your wife a strange cat and proceed to tell her your family she’s killed. Great flirting techniques by luthadel’s finest 😌
Can I read more about the lord ruler (Rashek) on his wiki after finishing Final Empire? I want to understand how he saved up his youth (and some other details), but I don’t want to spoil anything that I need to RAFO.
Just started the Well of Ascension! 🤘
Can’t find the motivation the read this era at all.
I keep starting and stopping and have to reread because I don’t care.
I miss all my favorite characters.
Tell me it’s worth it!
No plot spoilers ahead but this concers the 'About investiture' sections at the end of each book.
My main question, who is narrating them? At first I assumed it was just the author's comments about his own world building. But then I recently read Elantris and one line at the end set me off. The narrator has no theories about how people get powers in Sel. I thought "how do you not know how this works, you're the author- oh wait"
So I'm guessing someone is writing the endnotes in universe, but who. I can't rly tell for the mistborn series. The narrative voice sounds a bit like Sazed, but that might just be because sazed also has a lot of scholarly thoughts.
Is it Hoid? Some other world hopper? It's tricky to Google 'who is speaking at the end of the Mistborn books' . Has this ever been revealed elsewhere in the Cosmere? I''ve only read Elantris and all of Mistborn.
@tattoosbychels on Instagram if you wanted to see more :)
I've only just picked up Mistborn to read and I'm a good 80% through it. I've been a fantasy fan all my life and somehow managed to miss these.
My favourite thing so far on this sub is that I've accidentally read spoilers. I generally don't mind spoilers as I tend to read for character and world building rather than strictly plot...but for the most part they make absolutely NO SENSE to me. This is usually a good sign - e.g. if you read about the plot of aDwD when you're half way through GoT you'd be very very confused.
I'm really really excited for these posts to start to slot into place for me! 😁
I am just… so confused and blown away. KELSIER IS ALIVE?!? I thought that people mentioning he has ascended was a joke or misinterpretation of the texts, but no?!? And other worlds and powers?! I can’t wait for the last trilogy, and I NEED to talk about it with someone.
