This is my girl Kelly that is currently 14 years of age. I at one time had 5 Maltese and unfortunately the other 4 are in heaven for various reasons. I’m just happy to still have my girl. She is the light of mine and her daddy’s world. ❤️
Before anyone makes assumptions, I've owned and grown up with maltese dogs all my life since I was 3 years of age. I'm now 29. But that being said, I've never come across this situation before.
I have a 7-month-old male maltese named Teddy who has A LOT of energy, and I've been struggling to tire him out every day. He is a very nervous dog that has separation anxiety from my other dog, Button, that is at a similar age and is male also. They are practically best friends, constantly together. Except, Button is as calm as a cucumber.
I've tried walking Teddy in the morning for half an hour to an hour with and without Button and I've taken both of them to the dog park which did help but I can no way take them everyday due to life commitments.
They have a very big fenced backyard, which tires Button out completely. After that, they usually both have a nap outside, but once Teddy's awake again, he's bouncing off the walls.
They both wake up around 7-8am and hang around inside till the late morning. If I have time to take them for a walk before heading to work, I will, but doing so doesn't make a difference with Teddy. After that, they both wait patiently by the back door to go outside. I know they love it out there because they go nuts. Running around like steam trains chasing each other and play fighting. Once it gets to around 4pm, they can't wait to get inside for cuddles and attention while getting a few more play sessions in. By 9pm, they go to bed for the night. And that's how it's been since I got them.
Neither of then have been desexed, but I will be planning on getting them neutered in the next month or so depending on my financial situation.
I have a full-time job, so when I'm not around, my brother who works from home keeps them company, so they are never alone.
Most maltese I've owned in the past have never been this difficult to handle regarding energy levels. My current dogs have all the same things my previous dogs have had.
So what am I missing? I know dogs can go on anxiety medication, but I don't want to go down that path unless it's the last resort. I just want him to be happy, and I know he isn't with all this pent-up energy.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated, and thanks in advance.
Those fluent pet buttons? Beware. One of my three has figured them out and now takes great pleasure bossing me around all day and night 🤣 I want her to use them so I try to “listen” but fair warning! Only make buttons for things you’re okay doing over and over! It’s so cool- not gonna lie. Very neat. I need to find a way to video her but once I know she’s doing it, it’s too late! Buttons we have now: Hungry Water Treat (probably taking this one down- and I say no if it’s not appropriate) Outside Sound Open the door! Look! (Her favorite) Help Hmmm? (Not necessary) Play Snuggle Settle Their names and my name. Any suggestions on what to add/change now that she solidly gets it?
I keep a close watch on the integrity of this elk antler. It’s almost impossible for him to chew through it. He’s been working on this one for two months and has hardly put a dent in it but he still likes chewing on it.
I have a 17 year old Maltese and last night at about 8 PM he started screaming/crying…. His little face got all distorted and his eyes seemed like they were going to pop out of his head…. His little tongue looked a little blue and he was shaking. No foaming at the mouth or anything, but it lasted about 1.5 minutes. I took him to Emergency Vet and they hospitalized him overnight and he had no more seizures. We see a neurologist on Monday. He has little wobble episodes since the seizure, and has slept a lot today, but eating , peeing and pooping fine. The hospital also tested for Valley Fever, but I won’t get that back until next week. Could this be anything else??
Thanks to peanut butter being waved at her 😂
Does anyone have a link they can share? I have a high bed and none of my dogs like the staircase ones. If you have a small dog and a high bed please share 😘 thank you in advance
The little dude loves to cause chaos if left unchecked while I'm working (he's only been with us a couple of days), so he became my colleague for the time being. He seems to enjoy his new role :)
