Fun Lhasa Apso Facts

Lhasa Apso is an Ancient Breed The Lhasa Apso has a long history in his country of origin, Tibet. They have existed at least since the year 800 A.D., and for centuries they lived in isolation with Tibetan Buddhists in the Himalayan Mountains.

Their Western Name Comes From the Tibetan Capital Lhasa is actually the capital of Tibet. Why the word “apso” is included in the breed's name is less clear. It could just be a misspelling of the word “abso,” which is part of the breed's original Tibetan name, “Abso Seng Kye.” There is also a theory that “apso” is derived from the Tibetan word for goat, “rapso,” so-named because the dog's coat is woolly and goat-like.

Their Tibetan Name Means “Bark Lion Sentinel Dog” In Tibet, the Lhasa Apso goes by his original name, Abso Seng Kye, which means Bark Lion Sentinel Dog. Lhasas guarded Tibetan dwellings from the inside — while Mastiffs guarded outside — and would bark to alert the humans of any potential intruders. The Lhasa Apso was also associated with the mythical Snow Lion, which Tibetans believe to be a guardian of their country.

They Are a Sacred Part of the Reincarnation Process Tibetan Buddhists believe in reincarnation, and they believe that in the stages of reincarnation, a dog often comes right before a human. According to their religion, the souls of lamas, or priests, are frequently reborn as Lhasa Apsos just before they are reborn as humans.

They Were Highly Prized Gifts Lhasa Apsos were often given as gifts in Tibet. If you received a Lhasa as a gift, you could consider it a sign of good fortune. The spiritual leader of Tibet, the Dalai Lama, even gave Lhasa Apsos to the emperor of China many centuries ago (this is the predominant theory of how the Shih Tzu breed came about). Though they were often gifted, Lhasa Apsos were hardly ever sold.

They Came to the U.S. as Gifts From the Dalai Lama The first Lhasas to come to the United States were also gifts from the Dalai Lama. A well-connected traveler, named Charles Suydam Cutting, visited Tibet in the 1930s with his wife, and they returned to the United States with two Lhasa Apsos from the 13th Dalai Lama. The Cuttings would go on to import more dogs and establish the breed in the U.S.

They Live Extremely Long Lives Although the average lifespan of a Lhasa Apso is 12-to-15 years old, many can live to their late teens, and some beyond 20. In fact, the oldest Lhasa Apso lived to be 29 years old.

is my potty-trained lhasa going potty outside my roommate's room stress/territory-marking?

my lhasa lived with me in my boyfriend's house for two weeks as there was a mistake with the paperwork at the university's end (don't get me started on that, lol), before my lhasa and i moved back into my apartment a couple days ago. he has loved being in the apartment so far from what i can tell — exploring, wagging as he explores, sleeping in all areas of the apartment, etc. — but in the past day, he has both pooped and peed outside my roommate's door. since adopting him, i've taken him out four times a day (two full walks, two wander-until-pee-or-poop), so it's been stressing me out a lot, as that could be a serious health issue. my roommate and i both go into each other's rooms often as we share clothes since we have the same size and similar fashion tastes, which has caused an issue. i don't lock my lhasa in my room at all, only sleep with him on my bed with me, but my roommate told me he's growled at her when she went into my room without me there, tried blocking/herding her out when she's tried getting in, and barked at her + tried to bite her when she went into my room to get a dress when i was sleeping. he's fine with her outside of that, even accepting pets, but this has concerned me a lot. i know these could be lifestyle changes, i just wanted to ask to see if anyone else has had similar experiences or has advice. thank you!

Researcher interested in Lhasa Apso Breed

Hi there-I am a researcher at Virginia Tech and study the genetic control of body weight. Recently we found (from another researcher's paper) that two of over 1900 dogs had a mutation in a gene that we study (called Nhlh2) and both of these dogs were of the Lhasa Apso breed. Mutations in Nhlh2 cause obesity in humans and mice, and we are interested in studying whether this is also true in dogs. I am in the process of getting an animal protocol to obtain DNA from dogs, but I doubt we will have a lot of Lhasa Apso dogs here in Blacksburg, VA, so I'm wondering from owners like yourselves, whether you would be interested in providing a cheek swab by mail for us to analyze the DNA. We could provide you a report on whether your dog has this variant. Right now I am just seeing if there is any interest. If there are other groups that you know of for this breed I'd be interested in that as well.

Thank you.
