Desexing post-op advice

My girl is due to get spayed in about 6 weeks. She's a year old and just finished her first season. I know the basics like keep her laying low while she recovers, don't let her lick the spay site, etc. I'm honestly not sure how I'm going to stop this little ball of energy from jumping all over the place once she feels capable enough to do so. Anyone got any breed specific tips that saved their life post op?

Italian grey hound / Whippet question

So I am in love with greyhounds but I am aware their vet bills are very pricey due to health problems and I am pretty broke, do whippets and Italian grey hound share the same risk and expenses?

15 w/o iggy puppy potty training SOS

Hi, I am not sure if this is the right place to ask for advice, but I am desperate. We are first time dog/iggy owners and have a 15 week old little girl. We got her at 8 weeks old and potty training has been a nightmare. I researched before hand and we knew that iggy’s were hard to potty train, but this feels beyond the scope of what we were warned. Our iggy girl has so many potty breakers during the day, and is rarely left for more than 3 hours alone during the day while my partner and I are at work. From day 1 we have been crate training her, so at night she sleeps in her crate from 9pm-7/8am, with 4 potty breaks over that time span. I will admit that during the first week and a half of us having her we were not aware that she needed to have potty breaks overnight because she was too small to hold it overnight, so during that time period she would have accidents in the crate and we wouldn’t find out till morning because we thought her crying at night was just her trying to get out of the crate. That was our big mistake, but the moment we learned she needed breaks overnight we got on top of it. During the day she is out almost 2-3 times every 2 hours, and at night we were doing 3 potty breaks but had to bump it up to 4. She was doing okay for a few days here and there, but a big problem is this puppy almost never poops during the day. For some reason she will go from 8 am, to sometimes even as late at night at 1 am, before she poops. Any time she has pooped A. During the day and B. Outside, we have gone NUTS for her, she would get praise and a lot of high value treats. Even for a few nights she would pee and poop for us three times a night and we’d reward her and bring her back to her crate to sleep. Now for the past almost two weeks, she has maybe pooped outside 2-4 times. And every. Single. Other time. Has been over night, In between her bathroom breaks, and she doesn’t to tell us that she has to go potty or that it has already happened. She will just lay down in it, wether it’s pee or poop, without a single sound. It’s like all of the sudden she will hold it until she is back in the crate. She makes no noise to indicate that she is having an accident in the crate either so it’s nearly impossible for us to catch her. Her crate is just small enough of her to turn around and stretch. Which is why it has been baffling to us that she just has an accident and genuinely lays in it unbothered. We have tried taking her bedding out to stop her, and we have tried feeding her in the crate too, the crate isn’t too big, and she has ample opportunity to go outside. She has seen a vet and we have told them about our struggles, and nothing seems medically wrong with her. It’s getting to the point where I am sobbing because I feel like there is nothing we can do to fix this behavior. We are thinking about hiring a trainer, but I just feel so hopeless that no one can help us. I wanted to see if anyone could offer advice or insight. Will she grow out of this? she seems capable of holding it during the day so that she can do it during the night. It feels intentional, despite knowing it is not. It just feels like it is not a case of “puppy cannot hold it over night” and more of a “she is waiting for that particular moment to poop” We want to love our puppy and enjoy our time with her but this has made things so horribly hard. We are planning on seeking professional training, but that’s expensive and we can’t afford something like that right now. Please any advice helps. If you have any questions on things we are doing with her/ trying please ask! We need help.

Young potty training - dog area

Hi folks! I just picked up my 10 week old iggy - she is scheduled to get her second vaccine on May 8.

I live in an apartment building that has lots of dogs. The whole neighborhood is super dog friendly.

I know she should not be interacting with other dogs yet (we are carrying her everywhere) but i was curious about potty training outside. There is definitely a lot of dogs doing their business on the ground in my neighborhood.

I’m hestitant to train her on pee pads because I’m afraid she will learn to use them over going outside.

Has anyone had a similar experience, living in an apartment building and fear of exposing her to other dogs?

My Iggy Doesn't Know How To Jump.

Anyone else's Iggy not know how to jump? Mines 8 months old and it's amazing that he doesn't even try. Every now and then he might jump off something small, but definitely not up.

Considering they're prone to leg breaks, it's definitely a blessing in disguise. But when I see videos online of them basically being kangaroos, it's really surprising. I had to spend like 3 weeks with him just teaching him stairs and curbs.

I will say that I think hes kind of a late bloomer/runt. I also didn't adopt him until he was 6 months, so he spent most of his life at the breeders farm/kennel.

Also, any words of advice for getting him to lift his leg when he pees? I'm getting really tired of the pee smell on his sweater, hahah. He hangs out with other dogs really often, so I keep hoping he'd pick it up on his own, but maybe he's still too young. Part of me worries he was neutered too young (5.5 months) and therefore it might not happen, but there's been a few rare occurrences where he's almost tried, so I have hope.

pictures just because!

How do I put weight on?

My vet has told me to put some weight on this guy. Though he eats really well, I don’t see any change in his weight even with changes in food brands. If I feed him fatty food he tends to throw it up.

Anyone have this problem?

2nd iggy experience

Hi guys!!!! I have an 11mo iggy, and he is adapting super good to life in general, was super smooth his whole puppyhood, etc. Sometimes, because LIFE, he needs to be alone, not for much because I don’t let it happen, max 6 hours EVERY ONCE A BIG WHILE. But sometimes i would like to go to the gym and do more things, and even THOUGH HE IS FINE, I feel terrible!!!!! So i had the idea to give him a lil brother, preferably another iggy… Does it help? Whats your experiences?

E-Collars (pager only)??

Has anyone found success training your iggy to recall with the pager-only e-collar from this brand?

My 5.5 month old italian greyhound is a perfect little baby who LOVES to put everything in her mouth, as puppies do. I’m not worried about the occasional pebble, or stick, or chunk of dirt she finds when off leash in our fenced in backyard. However, the other day she found a big long rusty screw to munch on. I calmly walked over to her to take it away (obviously?!?) but she ran, and thought it was a really fun game. I did not want to chase her, and her get the idea it’s a game, but was internally panicking. I did eventually safely take it away but now I REALLY want to teach her recall even more than I did before. I also want, in case of another rusty screw, to be able to get her attention enough to either come to me so I can take it and exchange it for a treat or for her to simply drop it. I realized how absolutely horrific that whole incident could have gone had she gotten the idea to quickly swallow what she had in her mouth, or if she tripped while it was in her mouth. And I never wanna experience that again!!

If you get two, they’ll keep each other clean!

Our red guy is geriatric and mostly blind, he will be 14 this year. We got our blue boy about four years ago. They are such good buddies, they are emotional support dogs in the sense that they emotionally support one another all day every day! Now I know the day will come soon when there is only one dog left on the couch, and I am worried our baby blue will be devastated. Considering getting a third! Is this insane? Do I have…an iggy addiction?

Grain free diets (warning)

Posting this here so perhaps it can save someone else from the pain we are going thru. I suddenly lost my 10 year old female last week. She had a cough 10 days before, seemed fine and then we very sick for 6 days and then gone. She was diagnosed with left sided DCM (heart failure) which the cardiologist suspected was from her diet. If that was not bad enough, her 9 year old (none genetically related) brother has suddenly displayed similar symptoms two days after my girl passed and has been diagnosed with a similar condition. I would describe them both two weeks ago as in excellent health.

We have feed then what we thought were the highest quality foods available - Grain free foods. Our cardiologist is really great and has managed to save other dogs and even get them off treatment even with food based dcm - I do trust his opinion. He believes that it is almost certainly because the food they have eaten is grain free and instead of grain it contains legumes (peas, lentils). He believe legumes contain toxicity and also food without grain somehow is not able to absorb essential components for the heart. He believes it will be proven by UC Davis in the coming time. I hope he is able to save my sweet little guy.

I know one case of mine doesn’t mean it’s true for everyone but I’ll never feed any dog a grain free diet again.

I’m absolutely heart broken at the thought I have killed my little girl and seriously seriously endangered my little guy - fearing the worst. Please don’t take the chance of grain free food guys - anything with peas or lentils do not feed it. They need rice and grains. When I was at pet smart yesterday reading labels it is alarming how many are grain free and now linked with this awful awful condition.

Traumatic walk for Miss Judy

Yesterday on our walk an 80ish pound dog barreled over Judy and scared the shit out of her and me. I tried to pick her up but the dog was FAST. I picked her up after and she was screaming, I was so afraid that she broke a leg and she was so scared that she peed all over me. I definitely kicked the hell out of that other dog and yelled at its owner, who was laughing and asked “did he scare the little fella?” Like what the hell? That dog was HUGE and he made NO ATTEMPT TO RECALL!!! Comepletely bulldozed a 10pound IG puppy. I held her for about 10 minutes before she stopped shaking but for the rest of our walk she was anxiously looking behind us towards where they went. I cried afterwards because I was so scared but just kept repeating to myself that Judy is okay and everything is okay.

To top it off, she got stung by a bee on our way back to the house. Bad day for my girl.

It’s a huge green space public park and people let their dogs off lead all of the time. Even though they definitely aren’t supposed to. I’ve never seen such an irresponsible owner let such an untrained dog off leash.

And yes, ‘dobby’ has a sock to comfort her.

Separation/confinement anxiety HELP!!!!

I’m really not sure what I’m doing wrong at this point. Clementine is a 6 month old puppy who I’ve had home for roughly a month and a half. She’s a GREAT dog but has horrible (I suspect) mix of confinement and/or separation anxiety. She’s been on trazodone that was originally used to keep her calm while healing from leg surgery. I still give it to her to calm her down when I leave but she literally will fight it, and cannot relax in her crate and then crashes when I get home and she’ll sleep forever. I’ve contacted her vet who basically said to start giving her supplements but they won’t go into effect for another six weeks. I hate putting her through so much stress. I live by myself and work full time so I’m doing what I can to make it a fun space (hide training treats, give her a frozen treat ball, favorite toys) but it’s like she can’t comprehend they’re there because she’s so panicked that I’m gone. If it’s not too cold I take her on a 30 minute walk and give her puzzle feeders in her crate.

As long as I’m in the room, she will willingly go into her crate, lay down, or chew on a bone IF the door is open and I’m right there with her. The second I leave she acts like this. I’ve also started standing outside the door and going in to give her a treat once the barking stops, but I can’t do it forever before I have to leave for work. I’ve considered a play pen or just letting her roam around the room her crate is in. I just worry about potty accidents because she’s still so young.

I’ve already had my neighbors complain about the noise. I really feel for them because it’s a lot of barking but I truly don’t know what to do. I don’t want it to escalate to the point where animal control gets involved. I’d be absolutely devastated if something like that happened! Does anyone have any advice??
