Walking advice for sweet Teddy?

Hi all, meet Teddy! He’s a year old rescue that I adopted two months ago. He’s made INCREDIBLE progress getting used to his new life with me and I’m so proud of him. However, we continue to struggle with walks sometimes and I’m at a loss for what else to try.

I live in a big city in a busy area so when he first got here he was super scared to walk outside because there was constant noise and activity at all times and he is easily spooked (not reactive though) and lacks confidence. I did a lot of positive reinforcement and rewarded him with treats when we walked which eventually got him brave enough to go on a long morning walk and sometimes a shorter afternoon/early evening walk everyday.

He’s a lot more comfortable when my husband and I walk him together which is understandable but not realistically possible everyday because of our work schedules. Lately, when he’s with just one of us he is refusing to walk. We practically have to beg him to walk, he’s slow as ever (he normally has an animated little prance we adore), he will freeze in a spot, he doesn’t cross the street, ignores other dogs (which is shocking because he LOVES saying hi to other dogs) and overall we can tell he is not having a good time. I have tried to do the same thing I did in the beginning with tons of positive reinforcement and treats but it doesn’t seem to be working. We really want him to get used to walking with just one of us or even with others eventually but it appears he may be regressing back to being scared/having low confidence?

Nothing major has happened on any recent walks to warrant this and normally he walks well when he’s in the mood for it and we’re both there, but I’m just not sure what to do now because he was starting to show so much enthusiasm for his walks and having fun and now we’re not

Do you feed your poodle sardines?

How often and how much at a time? I already know no added salt and not packed in oil. Thanks!

Looking for an Ethical Toy Poodle Breeder in Delhi NCR, India

I’m from India, specifically the Delhi NCR region, and I’m looking to bring home a Toy Poodle. It’s really important to me that I get my new furry friend from an ethical and responsible breeder who prioritizes the health and well-being of their dogs.

If you’ve had a positive experience with a breeder or know someone trustworthy, please let me know. I’m happy to visit the breeder’s facility to ensure everything checks out.

Open for poodle adoption too.

18 year old Dolly snoring away after eating her Thanksgiving turkey 🦃

I love this old girl so much. As an only child, my parents have always referred to her as my sister. I can’t imagine any better sibling!

Leash walking progress 🐩

Exactly 405 days ago today, Roo wore a leash and harness for the first time.

Link: https://www.reddit.com/r/poodles/s/Nk7gOJQC6K

While I taught her the foundation of leash pressure and how to respond to it at a young age, it was free shaping that helped cement her loose leash heel.

To Roo, “heel” is a position, not yet a verb. When I ask her to heel, she will spin into position, but won’t know to maintain it in motion. That’s because I didn’t associate her loose leash heel with a cue, yet.

Instead, I silently rewarded her in intervals as she chose to stay beside me. I don’t ask for this heel position while walking, I don’t expect it, but I heavily and silently reinforced it when it’s offered, and as a result, the consistency paid off.

Free shaping allowed Roo to learn that walking beside me was in her best interest, it was where she was rewarded and praised despite not being expected.

I asked for a heel at the end to further establish the rewarding position (not free shaping as it was cued) and purposely withheld praise and rewards until the end to demonstrate how long term consistency can result in lasting behaviors.

I will always reward my pups for good behavior, cued or not, that’s just how we prefer to build our history of positive reinforcement for reliable behaviors. ❤️

*While the park has both on and off leash dogs, we always respect the space of on leash dogs (for our training and that of their own) to give them enough room to move comfortably or re-leash/carry if passing.
