In 1951, my grandmothers family property backed on to a river which was safeguarded by a gate and fence. On occasion, my grandmother and her siblings would be taken down to the river to play. On this day the gates latch slipped or was accidentally left open and Stephen took himself down to the river. He was found about 200 metres down the river the following day by his father. Tragically, my Great Aunt had been getting ready that morning and had accidentally stood on Stephen’s hand. After being scalded by her mother, she said to the crying Stephen “I wish you’d just disappear”, never imagining of course that Stephen would drown later that day.
After my wife and I had moved to another state to be with my wife’s family I fell out of contact with my mom. We moved back home in July and saw her briefly and then she stopped by our house for a few hours two weeks later in August. Everything seemed fine she never said anything about feeling bad or ever having to go see a doctor for anything crazy. She had a heart attack that Thursday at her home and no one knew. She was found on on that Saturday after nobody could get ahold of her. She was only 56 and there’s so much I wish I said and it doesn’t feel real still even even 3 months later like I keep expecting a phone call just checking in and more than once I have had to catch myself picking the phone up to call her to tell her something. I rarely post on any sub and not sure exactly why I am here. My mom was far from perfect but did her best for r my brothers and me and I’d do anything g just for one more talk or to go back to that last Sunday she was over knowing what I know now.
She passed unexpectedly 2 months ago. Got the call hours after it happened. Had to fly out and only got about 30 mins with her as the country limits how long the body can last without being buried.
She helped a lot of people make it in life. Never cared about money or materialistic things. She’d spend her last $10 if it meant helping someone in life. Unfortunately, that led to a lot of people taking advantage.
And even then, she didn’t stop helping and being kind.
Miss her terribly but I’m happy she got to meet her only grandchild.
This is the last photo that we have of her, taken on 18 October. We knew she was fading fast and scrambled to have a family photo shoot done.
She was 94 years old and was told by doctors in 1945 that she wouldn't make old bones. Boy, did she prove them wrong!
She slipped away peacefully in her own armchair in the living room with my sister and I holding her hands and whispering our love into her ears to carry with her. She's with Dad now, who was the love of her life.
I love you, Mama, and will miss you forever 💔.
Whilst digging up the backyard, something in the dirt caught Aaron’s eye: a plastic bag. Something hard was inside. Upon pulling it out, Aaron discovered it was a coconut.
He was puzzled: Why would someone bury a coconut, especially this deep, in a plastic bag? A closer inspection of the coconut revealed a full set of teeth and eye sockets.
He was holding a human skull—not just any skull, but that of his mother.
