Cabrinha 8m Moto + 11m Contra 1S for twintip

Hey,

I weight around 64kg, I ride a twintip and used to ride a 9m single Kite from 14 to 28 knots.

Now I'm thinking to buy a 'new' Cabrinha Moto 8m (2022) and a Cabrinha Contra 1 strut 11m (2023). Both on sale. I did not find an 11m Moto available for sale.

The idea would be to use the 11m 1S from 12-18 knots, and use the 8m from 18 to 30 knots. Even though I only read good things about the contra, I have no idea if I will like it or not.

Any opinion about this 8 / 11m setup?

Beginner friendly kite-spot in June/ July around Europe (max 4- 5 hours flight from France)

Hello, I am beginner kitesurfer, I get 15 hours lessons but i need to do more practice transitions etc. I am looking for somewhere

  • warm enough to not wear wetsuit mostly
  • shallow water that i can walk when it is needed.
  • Not too crowded, but not too empty either.
  • stable wind without too much gusts.
  • not very risky to have enough wind in June/July.
  • not extremely expensive

I know that i have too many conditions. Where do you recommend for june and July?

What kite/equipment to buy for Netherlands & Italy (Rome area)?

I am intermediate level who kitesurfed on/off over the last 10 years. I’d describe myself more as a casual kiter (no big jumps, etc). Just slightly less risk adverse given I am older.

After a longer break I surfed recently and had so much fun that I want to buy my own equipment (again). Had a north evo 2012 15m kite before.

I am planning to kite in the Netherlands and coastal area near Rome (vacation house). Looking to buy new equipment as budget is not so much a constraint.

What equipment would you recommend for me? Is the north reach any good?

Weight: 88kg

New kitesurfing set: Ozone Edge v11 not available for 12m

I have somewhat of a dilemma: Im really enjoying kitesurfing, had lessons and spent some time on the water and now it's time to actually choose a kite and head out by myself!

Im 21 years old, 66kg, 180cm, male.

Unfortunately I kind of wanted my quiver to be Ozone Edges. Ozone edges even the V12 (which are too expensive for me) are not available in 12m, and I was planning on getting a 9/12 quiver.

Another option seemed to be the North Reach, but I heard they are very heavy, and I dont know how much of an effect that would have.

Any input would be appreciated in terms of kites and brands.

I also do not want a high Y bar - so CORE and Duotone are out:)

Thank you in advance o7

New to kiteboarding

Just done with my 20th hour of lessons, almost all of which were during HUGE winds,HUGE waves....but I persevered and can now water start and ride upwind (kind of). Just need to get miles under me and my board.

Looking for guidance/direction on two questions

  1. What wind app to use?
  2. Where to best buy a used board, kite, and harness.

Livin' the good life now....SO excited.

Eric

Just wanted to say.....HUGE thank you to you all who responded and commented. I don't know how much you all remember being a newbie to this sport, but there is SO much to learn and I am just so deeply appreciative for the support and time you have given to me to help me along! GREAT advice. Thank you thank you thank you!

Eric

Anyone know what happened to nwkite?

Was a really solid resource and community for PNW/Hood, where'd it go?

*I got the answer, expired security cert combined with chrome forcing https. But I'll leave the post up in case someone else has the same issue and needs an answer.

Harness advice after popped rib

I popped a rib last year (not kitesurfing) and whilst it's healed fine it sticks out a bit so when I went kiting yesterday the waist harness dug in, was uncomfortable and has left it pretty sore today. I don't particularly want to go back to a nappy harness so has anyone got any advice, tips or alternatives?

Kite foil for prone foiling?

I found this setup on Facebook for $450 and I’m wondering if I could use it as a prone surf foil? I don’t have a kite but I do have a friend with a boat so I could learn behind the boat before trying to paddle into waves.

Duotone Evo vs Rebel or both in a 12/9/7 quiver?

Hello! I’m about to buy my first set of gear. I’m 160 lbs and beginner/intermediate. Still working on upwind and starting jumps. I’ve talked to a lot of people in my area and have settled on Duotone SLS for my kites, 12/9/7 seems to be a good quiver size recommended by people I’ve talked to (open to suggestions here as well).

My question is, should I stick to all the same type of kite? If so I’d probably get all Evos because it’s a beginner friendly kite and I don’t have enough experience to know what my riding style is. I like the idea of jumping high but I’m just happy to be riding and learning at this point.

Or should I get a mix of Evos and rebels? And if so, which size should be the Evo/Rebel?

For a board I’ll be purchasing a Lieuwe Shotgun 138x41 (open to thoughts on this as well but the reviews seem overwhelmingly positive and they look super cool!)

Any and all advice is greatly appreciated! Thank you!!

Orbit low end

Hey, in winter I ride gusty winds up to 35 knots and am very confortable with it, however in my home spot in summer usually wind is between 15-20 knots. Is the orbit low end really as bad as they say? Or will a 12m orbit do the work for 65 kg between 15-22 knots?

Beginner advice

Hi!

I took a few lessons three years ago and was able to get myself out of the water in one direction and had no power in the other. I recently got a trainer kite and been practicing walking with it and doing the 8s.

I’m in San Francisco. I’d like to get one whole set and start out with that. Everyone is advising me to look for used gear, but MACkite has some packages while fb marketplace is pretty hectic, I’m not even sure what sizes I’m looking for.

I’m 6’3 230lbs.

F one lynx bar with north kites?

I hava currently a f one quiver but I desperately want to change to north quiver, however I can only afford one north orbit without a navigator bar right now. Is the f one lynx bar compatible with the north kites? Or will it not work properly?

How high can one jump?

I’m just a spectator to the sport, but this is a question that I’ve tried to research online and haven’t found anything close to answer. My question is this - how high can you go on a kite board? Is it possible to get an updraft that takes you 1,000+ feet in the air? When I watch videos of people kitesurfing, it seems slightly terrifying because it looks like a person could just get carried away by the wind. Sorry if this is a dumb question. Legitimately curious about this though.

Tips on gauging what kite size to use for a bigger guy?

Hi all. So I just learned this year and i've been out maybe 7 or 8 times so far, including lessons. I'm at the point where i'm independent but I still always go with the school that taught me as they have shuttle/rental services too. As such, I usually just ride whatever they give me. Considering i've only been out a handful of times at this point, I really only have experience in a handful of conditions, mainly light wind where I used a 15 or 17m kite.

That said, i've been considering starting getting my own equipment and going on my own soon and I want to get better at gauging what size kite to use without the pros telling me. I know a good rule is to look at what other people are using but im a bigger person (230 lbs) than the average rider. So, lets say I show up to the beach and see a mainly ~10m kites out there, how much should I upsize considering im bigger than the average rider? Or if I see a few sizes being ridden, should I just go with the larger of what I see?

Similarly, I know kite manufacturers have size guides for their kites on their websites. BUT, they usually assume an average rider is ~80kg / 175 lb. Lets say for a given wind range at my skill level, they recommend X size kite for the average sized rider. How much should I upsize for that same wind range?

Finally, any tips on what a good set of ~3 kites would be for someone my size? I ride mainly in FL so the wind can vary quite a bit.

Nerdy questions coming

Hi guys, it's 3 am I can't sleep so here I am. When kites are designed how scientific is that process. Like do brands hire cfd and aerodynamic engineers who do advanced computations to for example get optimal lift or stability or is it more of a trial and error process where some people put together a kite based on guesswork, ride it and then decide if it feels good. And if they do in fact use advanced theory are there books papers or anything published on the matter of kite performance and cfd of flexible bodies?

North/Duotone Dice 2017

I am new to this sport and currently looking for a beginner/intermediate kite for little money. I found a used 9m Dice year 2017. It has 2 small pinholes which got repaired. It's listed for 160€ (170$). Is this price good for this quite old kite?
The price is without the bar, I already have one.

F-one Breeze vs Bandit: your opinion

I am interested in a kite so that my wife (55kg) can kite in high wind (30kts). I have the bandit line, and thought of getting the 7m bandit for her. However, I found a very good deal on the Breeze v3 7m. Would this be a good kite for her as a beginner? She just wants to safely freeride in a twintip, whenever there is high wind. Nothing fast and no foil. Thank you so much for your answers.

Sunscreen and exercise recommendations for a weeklong trip to DR?

Hi, I’m (37f) new here. I took one kiteboarding lesson at the Hood River last year, and I loved it! I progressed pretty quickly, and I’m excited to learn more. My boyfriend is very into the sport, and he wants to take me on a weeklong trip to Cabarete, Dominican Republic this summer. We’d be kiteboarding every day in the afternoon for five days. We also plan to surf, swim, and check out some caves in the morning, and we’ll be drinking every evening. Needless to say, I’m looking forward to it.

However… I’m like… super pale. I bought a rash guard and some surfing pants, but I’m worried about my hands, feet, and face. Does anyone have a really good waterproof sunscreen they use? I’ve had skin cancer removed from my face once before, and although I have a sunscreen I like to use for hiking and swimming at the pool, I need something that won’t need to be reapplied every 90 minutes since we’ll be on the water for longer than that. Also, will I be out of place wearing pants? We both wore full wetsuits in Oregon because the water was cold, but based on the videos I’ve seen of Cabarete, most women are very scantily clad there. If I can find a good enough sunscreen, I’ll try just wearing my swimsuit.

In Oregon it was cloudy, and my normal sunscreen worked fine. I’m assuming I’ll need something better for the DR in summertime. Any advice will be greatly appreciated!

PS: what are your favorite exercises to prepare your body? Right now I just walk a lot, do yoga sometimes, hike, ski occasionally, etc. but my boyfriend and dad both think I should be in better shape for this trip or I’ll spend the whole time sore. I’m not overweight or anything, just not particularly fit either.

Repair tips?

Bad day today… flew my kite into a tree and shredded the canopy. Leading edge and struts are intact. All the canopy tears are clean and straight. I’m thinking about using the canopy repair kite from Kitefix.com (Fiberfix + Glufix). Has anyone used this kit or have other recommendations?

Do Doctors Kitesurf?

Random question:

Do any of y’all know Doctors who actively Kitesurf?

If so, what’s their lifestyle like? I’m not sure how they’re able to go into the water considering some of them are on call and need to be ready in case of an emergency…

Thanks!

Kitesurfing boots or Sailing boots

Hi,

I have a nice pair of sailing boots, do I need to buy Kiting specific ones to kite or will they be very very similar and not needed? (They are specifically for trapezing, so extra grip and slightly bigger)
Cheers

Skis or snowboard?

Hey. Im gonna try kiteboarding for the first time in some days. I do both skiing and snowboarding. And other board sports. Planning on doing mostly kiteboarding on water in the future. Ive heard it’s more difficult starting on a board on the snow. Is it really that bad?
