RULES
Please use the WEEKLY DISCUSSION thread for general Q&A about gear and skills/technique, and any requests for opinions or help, especially for newbie-related questions. If your thread is removed without explanation, it's most likely because it should be posted there.
The general rule is photo and video submissions to /r/snowboarding should be of people actually riding on snowboards. If you want to submit a picture of your gear or where you ride, please use the Daily Discussion.~~
For riding advice and critique, we have a weekly thread where you can submit your video links if you want tips from the community or feedback on your riding.
NO MEMES: even if the meme in question shows actual snowboarding, memes are not allowed in the sub.
KEEP IT CIVIL: Heated discussions are fine, but hate speech and unwarranted ad hominem attacks may be grounds for a ban.
SELLING YOUR GEAR? For sale/trade posts are allowed, but all of the relevant information (description, pictures, location, price/terms) must be posted up front. Also, no repeat posts, please.
FOR BEGINNERS: You're welcome to post here, following the rules, but you can also head over to /r/snowboardingnoobs to ask questions. Also, the search function is your friend. We're 99% sure that someone has already asked the same question you have.
NO SPAM: As is the policy for all Reddit communities, spam is forbidden.
QUESTIONS? If you have a question about the rules, send a polite message to the mods and we'll look into it (provide the link to the thread in question too). None of us are paid for this and we're less likely to be lenient with rules if you're an entitled brat about it. It's regrettable that this has to be said explicitly, but a large number of messages we receive are like this.
Lastly, this is worth repeating since this is something that we have to constantly clarify (99% of modmail is about this): If your thread was removed without explanation, it most likely belongs in the Daily Discussion Thread.

I’ve been interested in freestyle snowboarding and wondering if taking gymnastics class would be tremendous help. Like learning wild cats and tame dogs or spinning and whatnot.
I wanna get better at tuning and waxing my own gear. I know the real basic wax stuff but I know there’s a lot that goes into sharpening/tuning edges properly. Anyone got and tips or resources I can utilize? If there’s a decent book or videos explaining I’d love to find them
Hi I'm from Texas and I've heard Aspen has been very good for snow boarding but I am just curious where would a great place to be to snow board and if so would it be expensive??
Just bought a new board and pretty excited to try it this weekend. Got a good deal $600 total for (board + union bindings). But now it got me thinking if I'm too big for it and if I should've opted for a wider/longer board.
Board - 161cm; waist 26.1cm; recommended weight 160-220+ Lb
I'm 6"2 tall, 227lb, shoe size 11
What do you guys think?
Also, how are you liking it? I ride mostly groomers, powder and trees.
After a month snowboarding I started to realize that my kit was quite heavy. Weight is never put on the equipment so difficult to tell what's normal but I'd actually weighed my kit ages ago and it is mentally heavy:-
Rain Gore Tex Overall - Black, Medium (925g)
STONE GORE-TEX JACKET 825g which is batshit crazy
These are built to last but total overkill. I also have Flex Force X D3O pants which i've cut a load of pointless logos and connectors off. I've replaced a load of the zips pullies with just the string things and saved about 50g. I'm actually considering cutting the double zip snowskirt and zip on the bib off because i actually never used this yearin deep powder. Is a bib enough for deep powder without zip tech?
The really galling thing is that my mate just got some burton ak top and trousers and it comes out at 600g! I won't go back to not having zip tech or a bib though because popper snowskirts don't work. I just don't know where the weight has come from. There are a crazy amount of zips.
The shop I rented from said the boa system is very annoying to replace. I just tried a pair of moto Burtons with the non boa system and I feel that is more than fine. I also see on the cons list of reviews of boots that the boa system has issues and can break easily sometimes.
I have never worn a helmet due to the level of comfort, I understand that I will be a life saver but me having thick dreads it feels really uncomfortable. Is there a brand or some tips that can help me out for next season.
hey, quick question for yall
I have a burton custom camber from this season and I realized the reference stance is actually half an inch set back. I like riding switch and even with the reference stance it feels ok but I would like as much of a true twin as possible.
However, searching online, I found that while it is true twin flex from the contact points, the sidecut itself is supposedly out of alignment from the flex because the sidecut starts from the longer nose side.
Can someone please 1) confirm if this is true 2) advise if its better to mount my bindings on the reference stance, or half an inch (one notch) higher up to be perfectly centered?
Thanks!
Anyone else get dizzy/vertigo when snowboarding in flat light/whiteout conditions? Had to cut short the last couple of days as felt really sick. Coming down the slope on the last run was very sketchy as got disoriented on red slope, where you normally know where down is.
I had the base peel off an old Custom X (stupid die cut design).
I'm thinking about using marine epoxy and clamps but figured I'd see if anyone has experience with this type of repair first. Is it worth it? Or time to put on the wall? The X has a fill layer of carbon under instead of wood.
FWIW I have other boards in the quiver but really like this one.
Hi everyone,
Could you please help a beginner out regarding whether or not to keep my current snowboard?
This was my second season of snowboarding. I have probably had about 6 days on the piste in total. My snowboard dealer gave me this snowboard. I actually liked it because it was quite stable and I don't care for high speeds as I'm still not the best at navigating in different directions.
This is the exact model I rented: https://www.tradeinn.com/snowinn/en/head-rush-snowboard/136880940/p
It's a second-hand snowboard and I was wondering if you'd advise me to stick with it or try something else next season. Also, if I decide to buy it, what would be a fair price you would expect?
Thanks in advance!
Hey all,
I took this board (2011 Lib Tech TRice Pro HP) to my local shop (which I trust and they're great) for an end of season base grind/wax/etc. because I've p-texed/hand-waxed for the last 5 years in the garage. They noticed this ding on my front side edge, most likely from a tree incident, and told me that it's probably not worth sinking the money into a repair on a board that's 15 years old.
My question is- should I give it a go myself? It isn't cracked and the top sheet isn't really delaminated (maybe a hairline that I could epoxy), so could I clamp it and heat it to bend it all flat? Should I smack it with a mallet? Ignore it and hope for the best?
TIA for any opinions.
Hi guys.
I just got delivered a brand new pair of Union Stratas that I found on offer. This is my first bindings for my first snowboard, I've always ridden on rentals.
I've ordered it by the size chart which was a L size, however, strapping my boots size 10.5 to it as a test I noticed there was a little gap.
My question is, would it be better to try a pair of M bindings or that gap would be fine?
My snowboard is a Frontier 159.
Hi, I am from the Netherlands and I am planning to do a 2-month snowboarding trip in Canada next season (which months exectly I do not know yet) I am thinking about buying an Ikon pas or an Epic pass but do not know which one would be better for Canada. Anybody that can give me advice on this? Or is there another season pas which would be good for Canada?
Ps. Probably renting a car to get from resort to resort.
Ps. I am also planning to spend a week in Japan after the Canada trip.
Hi, I’m 14 Male Snowboarder, and I have no idea where to go. Specifically I have been snowboarding for like 7-8 years now and I’m able to do pretty much anything but I don’t know where to progress, I’m not very interested in park although I go there a little but I like free ride but there are no real pathways in doing free ride at my level. I tried to become an instructor though I was too young, where do I go from here?
I had a pretty hard fall on an icy run on a day with virtually no visibility thanks to a skier who came from behind and took me out. I ended up falling back and my head slammed down on the ice last. The impact was enough to eject my goggle lenses about 20 feet lol but once located they were still useable fortunately.
My helmet is black (its Smith, purchased new a year ago for about $240). Due to the color you cant see the damage in pictures but basically there is a small dent where my goggle strap fastener was attached on the lower back right side of my helmet. From the inside i cant see any damage just the outside.
Do i need to get a new helmet? Jw if my current helmet is automatically considered useless protection wise now that it has a dent /small crack. When I googled this all the helmet companies of course say to buy a new one…
Thoughts?
Snapped my Super DOA on my last weekend of the season =(
Overshoot a tabletop-like sidehit and landed a bit nose-heavy. Only noticed the crack 2 runs later, and couldn't believe that happened, as it wasn't a big jump.
Reach out to Capita (without mentioning the jump) about the warranty and the best they can do is give me a 50% off.
Pretty disappointed as this was my favorite board. But the top sheet was getting worse after every ride, with scratches and chunks taken off the sides. And now with that crack is a goner.
Should I get another S DOA or go for another board? Now should be the time with all the sales going on, but I'm pretty lost with what I should do.
Got any tips to avoid ending up in the same boat?
I’m a beginner and terrified of injuries lol. Please share your experience 🙏
Hey guys, I’m getting back into snowboarding and currently am in an indoor park. Now I want to start buying my own gear, I already bought my own helmet but my question is, is it smart to buy my own snowboard boots to use with rental boards? I’m currently buying gear step by step since gear is not cheap + my membership at the indoor. I want to buy my own board eventually :)
Hey everyone , I’m finally about to buy my first board this summer for next season after renting for years. I have tried probably 10+ brands, and I’m having a hard time finding a board that I really feel comfortable on. I usually ride between a 154-159 but I need a wide board because my boots are size 13. I’m 5’9 about 165-170 pounds are there any recommendations for an intermediate rider that isn’t trying to do anything crazy, but just wants to have some fun shredding on the mountain
Im looking to mostly ride all mountain, decent bit of powder and a little bit of park. I like buttering so I want a flexy playful board.
Any advice for what to use on my garage floor?
