What will be a good starting system if 2 of us want to try hex/counters wargames for first time? We have experience with pretty complex TT games. I know about ASL but it looks scary. Any suggestions?
EDIT: WW2 or Vietnam but i think WW2 would be best.
Hi ya'll! Being pretty new to wargaming, and I settled for Chainmail. Before I go purchasing miniatures I was hoping for some aid about "generic" chits that might suffice for medieval troops. Either where to purchase, how to design or print out, many thanks in advance
Many will remember Mayfair Games as the original company who published the famed Settlers of Catan. However, they started publishing games in 1981, one of those was a microgame called Space Empires.
I have a video review of the game here.
There are many other games from Mayfair Games that cover a wide array of genres. Which ones do you remember playing?
is Warfighter a good series? where should I begin if I'm new? are there things considered "essential" for expansions or components? thank you all in advance for any help and advice.
New USPS rates went into effect on 19 January, the commercial rate (what you can get using PirateShip, etc...) for USPS Priority Mail Medium Flat Rate Box is $16.65.
At least for the USPS Priority Mail Medium Flat Rate Box this does not look like a rate increase from last year.
Howdy Y'all:
I'm 62 and started my wargaming journey with these two games back in the late 70's. I've been playing Memoir 44 with my grandson, who will be 11 in February, for the past year. He's ready to move onto something more, so I'm looking for games like the above-mentioned titles because of their simplicity and scalability in size to take the next step with him. I saw the game Panzer, but that seems too complex with the extra lean towards realism.
I've done some googling, but I can't seem to find what I'm looking for. There are some PC gaming options that could work, but his Mom only gives him 30 minutes of screen time a day, and since I homeschool him, I'm going to use the gaming to get in some math lessons, without him realizing it. I'm sneaky that way. hehe.
Any ideas?
Columbia Games faced some challenges ever since the pandemic. However, they have rallied heavily, starting with their hardcover books for their HârnWorld RPG line, but now with beautiful upgrades to their classic games, Julius Caesar, Rommel in the Desert, a brand new very well received game called Alliance, and now a 50th Anniversary edition of Quebec 1759.
The question is now, which game to upgrade next? Any thoughts?
Here is one of the many videos that are cropping up about Quebec 1759.
Lurker finally chiming in with a question.
I’ve seen LOTS of posts here recently asking after solitaire games. My question is, how do you not get bored with them too quickly to justify the purchase (sometimes $100+)? I’ve looked at several and they often only simulate one battle with fixed positions and maybe a handful of scenarios.
Please don’t take this as an attack on solo games. I just think the joy of wargaming so often comes from playing against or alongside a human. I know that playing both sides has been a thing for ages; I’m referring to games with solo rule sets (the D-Day games, FoF, Combat!, Solitaire ASL, the GMT CDG solo rules, Carrier Battle, Enemy Action, etc).
Take Cuba Libre for example: it comes in a 3 inch box, and has a cardboard 'packing/shipping insert' in the bottom centre that takes up space. Cards and bags of counters go either end of the insert, and then board, books, and player aids lay on top of the insert and sit flush with the top of the box.
I bought a little flat container to sort and store the counters, and some boxes to hold the cards. These don't fit with the insert so I removed it, lay the board/books/aids in the bottom, then put in the counter box and card boxes. This only takes 2 of the 3 inches of box depth, so there's an inch of empty space below the lid.
I like what I've done - it's very neat and tidy, and easy to pack the box, but I can't help worrying about the inch of empty space under the lid.
... Although on reflection it's probably very likely that virtually all weight of a box the same size laid on top will be supported by the box/lid sides, not the middle of the flat surface of the lid, so I'm probably worrying for nothing.
I'm looking specifically for one that should cover most of the entire battle, including 1945.
Not a deal breaker but one that represents true units in the battle in every counter would be cool because my grandfather (rest in peace) was in this battle and I would like to command his unit. He was in the 47th US regiment if that helps at all.
Four missions in, and loving my randomly generated solo campaign of Lock 'N Load Tactical, Heroes of the Bitter Harvest.
Mixing their battle generator with my own random force system and the solo assitant makes this game super replayable - and each mission is a surprise!
I’m looking for a lifestyle/endless game like ASL but good for solitaire play, with a big community and stellar design. Lots of possible scenarios, perhaps? I will be playing alone, for better or for worse.
The three below are ones I see mentioned frequently.
Thanks all.
Hi, I am considering “Death in the trenches”. What alternatives do I have for solo friendly or solitaire experiences on WW1?
I was about to place an order for Fields of Fire Deluxe Edition. Shipping is $24.
I have been a big supporter of GMT for many years, but with their current shipping rates, I can no longer justify ordering directly from them. If I order from a third-party seller, I still get a hefty discount and free or very cheap shipping.
Hello, first time posting here. I’m looking for suggestions per the title.
This game will probably be played solo 75% of the time or more, but I’d also like it to be playable at 2 players or more.
This isn’t my first “wargame”, so I’m looking for something with medium to medium-high complexity. Other games I have and enjoy are Comancheria by Joel Toppen, Bayonets & Tomahawks, The Hunters, and American Tank Ace. The last two are both by Gregory Smith. I also have lots of experience playing other designer board games and some TTRPG games.
I’m initially leaning toward The Last Hundred Yards: Airborne over Europe as the paratroopers are a big draw for me. However, I’m open to suggestions as a lot of this is newer to me.
Thanks!
Edit: Due to the timing of the P500 and my interests, I opted for Fields of Fire: Deluxe Edition. Unfortunate it’s only 1p, but it really seemed to hit the mark for me on what I was looking for. Thank you everyone for the great suggestions. It’s given me a great list to come back to!
I’ve been looking into the Enemy Action series for mainly solo play, and was wondering how complicated it is. I’m relatively newer to wargaming, and had heard the series was reasonably complex. I was also looking at Manila the savage streets, Combat! And Tarawa 1943 as less complex alternatives. What would y’all recommend I buy?
Hey folks, I got a bit of christmas dough lying around and I'd like to spend it on a nice hex and counter game, hopefully some of you know a game that:
has TONS of content. like I want to bathe in the chits (ironically) but I just want a lot of variety of units/effects/terrain etc.
Preferably is not WW2 themed, but I am willing to compromise
Preferably has a solo play mode (that is not playing two-handed) as I don't think my friends like the same stuff.
Is still in print or available second hand in germany? I don't mind older stuff, but I'd have to be able purchase a copy.
If possible a little bit of streamlining where I don't have to finish a bachelors degree in studying the game in order to play it :))
I know these are a lot of criteria, some of them perhaps slightly opposed to each other, but I would greatly appreciate your thoughts and experiences!
