Took Friday off to install my floor.
Insulating the garage walls this spring. I've done it before with batts, but I've moved to an area with hot, humid summers and dry, cold winters. I'm not planning on installing HVAC, just insulating against heating from sun and maybe retain a little heat in the winter. With all the moisture in the summer, should I just go fiberglass again or use foam board?
Has anyone ever put one in? I've got an unfinished 1-bay garage that I use as a workshop and daylight during that day would be nice. I've looked on youtube and surprisingly haven't found anyone that's done that. The garage is exposed to the rafters - no drywall, etc.
I feel as though I am finally succeeding in life, long time goal. Some variety for the fellas 🫡
I’ve got a 20x24 insulated shop with an electric heater as my main source of heat. What’s the deal with the mini split? I’m in Canada and It can get from -30 c to +30 c. Is this something that’s worth looking into ? It’s all new to me.. otherwise I gotta drag. A Gas line from my house. Thanks for the help!
Hello, I out on West Coast (Oregon) and looking to put up a prefab garage, and I am not sure what I want even exists. Plenty of prefab/modular homes that are modern looking. Timber framed, shed roof, etc., but nno one seems to have a kit or design for a similar styled shop? I would like a shed roof, where I can put a lift on the high side, possibly a small loft. Nothing too fancy, but probably fancier than the pole barn/ metal building places my search is showing me. Any ideas?
My dogs sometimes have to stay in the garage when we are at work. I have a wifi outlet and I am wondering if I can hook up a heater to it so I can turn it on and off without having to walk outside my fence to get to my garage to turn it on or off.
Any recommendations on what electric heater to buy in order to plug in to the smart switch?
I do not want to keep the detached garage heated all the time, only the days where is is below freezing and my dogs have to be in there.
Looking to replace a bunch of track, rollers, hinges, etc. Nearly the entire thing really. What are the best sites to buy from that won’t destroy you in shipping? Are there other common places I can look for parts locally? All I see is garage door companies that want to do the work. They also charge a premium for parts.
Thanks for the help!
Does anyone have recommendations for an alternative to the component metal shelves sold at Menards, I think it’s their Performax shelves? In particular I like that Menards offers the ability to purchase individual components separately allowing for a custom build. (I’d probably purchase at Menards if I lived anywhere near one). Thanks.
Thoughts on how best to rearrange things? We just bought a car that we’d like to store in the garage. Red boxes on the left are the garage doors, other red boxes are doors to inside/backyard. We can remove the fridge entirely but wondering how best we can rearrange the tool chest and shelves so everything can still be against the wall with leaving as much room for the car as possible. Total garage size is 221” x 231”.
I’ve made the decision to purchase a Versatube garage. I have the design completed, had them increase snow load a bit from the standard calcs based on my location, and I’m at the point I’m going to order. My question - the customer service person wants me to call them to place the order. Is this normal? Anyone who has ordered from them, is this what you’ve done and it went smoothly? It just screams stolen credit card number to me.
I used Gladiator Gearwall for one whole wall of my garage and had some left over so I figured I would stick with it for the wall behind my workbench. If I had done more research I might have used Omniwall instead, but I digress... After being disappointed by the offerings for mounting my most commonly used cordless power tools to Gearwall, I saw the Milwaukee Packout stuff and thought "Hmmm... I wonder if it's possible to attach the Packout bracket to Gearwall without too much effort?"
I am happy to report that it is very simple and requires no modifications to either system!
Just buy some drop-in T-Nuts for Gearwall like this (or 3D print them yourself): https://www.ebay.com/itm/156510706607
And then you can use them on Milwaukee Packout brackets like this (in the top 2 holes and bottom middle hole): https://www.milwaukeetool.com/Products/48-22-8486
And it works perfectly: https://imgur.com/a/hZ6XPon
I don't think I'd try to mount any of the heavy Milwaukee stuff to this since only half of the mounting points are utilized, but this works great for the smaller stuff.
I’m in the process of adding studs, insulation, sheetrock, and electrical to my existing cmu block garage. It’s only 22’x22’, but I’m wondering what others recommend for ceiling lighting? I’ve used t12 tube lights in the past, but it seems like those are phasing out from local stores. Are the tube style LED lights any good? I see most of those are to be plugged into an outlet, not hardwired, which seems strange as well. Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.
I want to refinish my garage to make it more of a living space, maybe with a couch, TV, a table, and a small exercise area. I was initially thinking of putting down some type of indoor/outdoor carpet over the concrete, and maybe installing some new ceiling lights. I don't love the texture and look of the walls/ceiling either, but redoing those seems like a pretty big task.
There are also gaps between the walls and concrete, and I have a few vents in the wall that are open directly to the outside. I'd like to close most or all of these up for better insulation, although idk I need to keep those open due to the gas water heater in the garage. I'm completely inexperienced in DIY but would love to be able to do this myself if possible to save money. Does anyone have some ideas for how to make this space nicer? Or tips on installing carpet, closing up those wall vents, or anything else? TIA!
There are three of these wall vents near the floor along one wall.
Shopping around for prices for epoxy with flake for the garage.
I'm seeing an average of about $9 per square foot. Does this sound about right with what everyone else is seeing? I'm in South Carolina for reference
I have been shopping quotes around to see what I needed for my soon to be man cave. My house is less than a year old and I haven’t even parked in it or used it as a “real garage” I workout in it but nothing has even been spilled on the floor. Is the sanding down necessary? I was just told I didn’t.
Hello all, you’ve made me envious enough with these finished garages, so I am building one of my own. I am looking at a 24x36 or 24x24 lofted. I like the idea of keeping everything open on one level, though with my property that adds a large amount of excavation costs as I would need a retaining wall about 6’ tall to support the extra 12’.
The garage will be used primarily as vehicle and sxs storage with some tool benches and storage. It will also house my home gym, which is a treadmill and squat rack. So if I go lofted the gym and storage would go upstairs.
So for those who have a loft or didn’t go lofted, any regrets or input?
I'm getting my garage finished as we speak. The original project timeline was:
The taper is busting his ass and he seems to be doing a good job, but as of right now, his timeline has extended to 4 total days. This means that everything else is backed up...
I've never had to coordinate multiple contractors like this before so naturally, I'm pretty rattled.
Should I be concerned with my contractors compressing the timeline so much, thereby compromising the quality of the final product? I'm generally OK with the painting... but I know nothing about concrete stuff and according to a quick google search, quick set concrete is generally not as good in quality as regular concrete? The taper & painter were referred by the garage floor company... which is very highly rated polyaspartic installer.
TLDR; 2 day tape/mud job turned into 4 days, so 5 day painting & floor project is now planned over 3 days. Should I be worried?
