My Chromebook has enterprise enrollment, so I connected to the SPI using a CH341A programmer to install a custom ROM (Coreboot from MrChromebox). Everything seemed to go successfully, but when I turned the laptop on, it refused to boot (black screen). NOTE: It charges without any problem. I tried installing another ROM from "JohnLewis.ie" website, but I noticed the website is down. I also tried removing the battery, pressing the reset button, and doing everything else I could think of. Any advice? Or is the laptop dead?
i wanna bring chrome os to mobile but have no idea on how to do this or what im doing any help would be appreciated
Hey! My Chromebook is refusing to start up. I know it's charging because the charging light is on and I checked if the charger worked on my phone (it did)
I've tried all the reset stuff like holding reload and power button, long press power button etc. This laptop is quite new and nothing has happened that would have broken it. What should I do?
I read some post that they were asking about resting their Chromebook to erase all user data, some response said that they could powerwash it.
I have a samsung Chromebook, and I have reset is and did the power wash but I can tell you that it didn't erase all the data. Mine still had apps left that I had installed and search history. So unless I did something wrong the reset and power wash did not erase it all.
If you have any new info for me please let me know.
Hi, I am looking to buy a refurbished Chromebook as a spare machine for someone to use to watch YouTube videos, check emails, web browse, etc. Could someone please provide some good recommendations for a $50-75 Chromebook that might still get updates for another couple of years at least?
Thanks!
here is the laptop i bought him at target:
I just got a new Chromebook yesterday, the Lenovo duet 5 with 8gb RAM. I had a Chromebook about 10 years ago but this is my first since then.
First of all, when I tried to connect to my WiFi I kept getting an error about DHCP lookup failed. I ended up connecting by manually entering the IP address and other fields.
Since then like 2/3 of webpages load suuuuper slow. I’ll go to take the internet speed test and it’ll be like unable to connect to it or it’ll be like 5mb (usually it’s ~250mb). Sometimes I’ll do the test and it’ll be the regular 250mb.
None of my other devices are having internet problems. I’ve tried starting and I updated it also. Is this normal? Do you notice your Chromebooks being significantly slower than other devices?
I'm sure many are aware in this sub that windows released a type of laptop to compete with chromebooks
It's called s mode and it's meant to be a stripped down version of windows and much more secure
My question is when it comes to low end devices, I'm talking a below $200 device (yeah I'm broke asf)
Would it be better to get a windows s laptop or a chromebook?
Edit: I should've specified, this is for my elderly dad, I personally use a chromebook
I have developer mode with chromebrew installed, how do I run GUI applications with sudo? I don't want to use a linux container, space is at a premium with only about a GB to spare and I only need it for a single lightweight application.
It needs root access because it does need to access something in /dev, but when I edit file permissions in /dev they don't seem to stick (they do for a few seconds, then reset to the old permissions), if I useradd chronos to the root group it doesn't add me, if I forcefully add myself to the root group by editing /etc/group it seems to break logging into the chromebook on boot.
So alternatively is there a way to make permissions on files in /dev stick? But I'd rather run the one application with sudo so I don't have to reduce security and allow all applications running as my user to touch the file in /dev.
EDIT: Figured it out! Run xhost + as chronos and it will allow root to run GUI applications. Will leave this here for future explorers.
Hi, i recetnytly boaught a ideapad duet 3 chromebook and noticed that whenever i click on the battery in the task bar ti would show htat i have 5-6 hours of battery left, although the product specifications state it has around 12 hours.
I have to rund a discharge test or turn on then back off teh battery saver mode for it to reflect time between 9-12 hours.
I was wondering if this is normal or if anyone else experienced that or i have a bad unit.
Thank you.
Where in Washington DC/MD/VA can someone go to sit down with an expert that will setup a Chromebook properly for parental controls?
My sister's Chromebook is completely messed up, only one parent is listed, only one (of two) children are listed as child. There are no parental controls settings set up, and other things several layers deep. My sister is completely inept and needs an expert to see it up for her. She has no one in her life that can do this for her, I want to send her to a place to help.
Where can she go?
I'm curious on other users' experience using the HP Chromebase in 2024. How is it holding up for you, particularly for any power users?
I'm looking to purchase one because I can't find another desktop that fits my needs better, especially in the ChromeOS world. However, I have had and retired my Pixelbook and Pixelbook Go i5/8gb due to it not being sufficient for my needs anymore, in favor of the HP Dragonfly Pro i5/16gb.
I have a feeling the RAM is the more important thing for me, and I've heard that the RAM in the HP Chromebase is user upgradable; currently looking at the i3/8gb but would probably upgrade the RAM to 16.
Most of my workflow is web-based, but I am a bit of a tab wh*re. I dabble in things like Canva/Photoshop/GiMP, and I know my way around the Linux terminal fairly well. Just want to see how well the device has held up with update support and whether it would be suitable enough for my needs. Experience with how well Android apps run on the device, particularly ones like LumaFusion, would be helpful as well.
I'm also curious (though doubtful) whether it offers video in, as I would more than happily use it as a glorified monitor for my Dragonfly Pro.
Any feedback is appreciated! TIA
Hi, I'm looking to get my parents a chromebook. They are not very picky when it comes to tech, so not looking for anything fancy specs wise. The criteria I would have would be a fairly large screen (say 15 inches or so), and not frustratingly slow. They currently use an old laptop that has a lightweight linux distro running on it, but it's showing its age at this point.
I've seen some chromebooks online for around £150-200 in the UK (https://www.johnlewis.com/hp-chromebook-15a-na0007na-laptop-intel-celeron-processor-4gb-ram-128gb-emmc-15-6-hd-mineral-silver/p111576149) - but wondering if there are better options I am missing. Happy to pay slightly more (around £250) if the value is there as well. Thanks in advance
I ordered this Chromebook today and am wondering if it supports USI. I haven't found anything about it on the Internet
Thank you guys
I was trying to look in this sub instructions on how to stop chrome os from logging you out whenever you shut down your chromebook but I couldn't find any guide. I found the solution and here it is with screenshots.
Go to Chrome settings and click on privacy and security on the left pane and click Site settings
Then scroll down until you see Additional content settings. Click
Scroll down again until you see On-device site data. Click
Then click on the radio button that says Allow sites to save data on your device
That's it! Whenever you turn on your chromebook you won't have to log in again to reddit, facebook, microsoft 365 or any website you've logged into before shutting down your device. Enjoy!
Using it for YouTube, browsing, sheets, etc.
I'm just wondering if there are any client software downloads for autoclickers for ChromeOs, I've tried using exe files but obviously those don't run on Chrome (like op autoclicker), and I don't think CRX files work on my Chromebook (developer moded is blocked).
I'm just wondering, because I want to help make things more efficient and increase productivity.
Bought this either in late 2020 or early 2021, and it's been an absolute dream... until about about two weeks ago.
I got the "ChromeOS is missing or damaged" error message, and so went and made a recovery key.
Ever since, it's been restarting unexpectedly.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
I'm on version 130.0.6723.126, if that makes any difference.
In short, it's only the built-in features of ChromeOS that could benefit from NPUs right now, and that has only been enabled for the Chromebook Plus range.
Effectively, it's AI thats being sold as an advantage on Chromebook Plus and not the NPU. Android apps can't access the NPU. Chrome can't access the NPU.
For Android there isn’t an implementation of the Google Play API for machine learning, RTLite, that can use NPUs yet. This article (August 2024) from Google appear to confirm this. If Android apps built with the Google RTLite API can’t access the NPU, what can?
There’s a possibility that some special apps utilise the NPU directly but is that really useful?
What about the Gemini app? Surely the Google Gemini app is going to be the first to support an NPU? Maybe it does. Maybe it doesn't.
Well, it’s more bad news. Gemini isn’t even available on non-Plus Chromebooks. There an NPU available on the Mediatek Kompanio (Gen9) Duet 11 and Gemini can be installed. The problem is that Gemini has a dependancy on the Google app – the entry point to the Google ecosystem for mobile devices – and that’s not available to install. It appears that Gemini is being held back for Chromebook Plus devices.
The other app to test is Photos, which has a ‘magic eraser’ powered by AI. Magic Eraser has been available for some time, and appears on Chromebooks, but it doesn’t appear on either of my Duet 11 devices. I have no idea whether Photos has specific hardware requirements or whether there's firmware that needs to be updated. It's a neat feature, and works on the Pixel 6, from 2021!
Another option is Chrome itself. Can chrome access the NPU? In theory, yes, but it’s not available by default in stable editions of Chrome. The Language Detection web platform API is being trialled and can be enabled on Chrome today. I'm not aware of any major web apps that use this API yet. (Your comments welcome!)
ChromeOS includes some standalone features. The main feature being ‘help me write.’ Initial tests (2 accounts, one in Germany, one in UK) on my Kompanio Chromebook show that the new “help me write” feature is not available. (Version 130.0.6723.126.) Again, it appears to be something reserved for the, dare I say it, more profitable Chromebook Plus models.
As it stands today the NPU is not only useless for Chromebook users and it doesn't look like much will change in 2025. When the Gemini app is released for all Chromebook, maybe we'll really get to see an advantage. Personally I'm looking forward to "help me write" being available.
(Modified from my review of the Lenovo Duet 11 gen 9 that have been working on recently.)
Hi, I have very iritating issue, when I play music for youtube music (android version), and read websites like demotywatory.pl, wicha.pl which play videos like pop up windows, songs in youtube music stops immideatly. Can someone help me disable auto playback videos in chrome?
In 2022 I made a feature request to include Flatpak apps support to Android to compete with iPad, which got a pretty positive response from Google. I have a gut feeling that somehow I am responsible for this transition.
so my grandma died.. and i got my laptop the specs are on another post but i need to get the parental controls OFF i am 13 and so i need help trying to get them off for Linux needs so i can play minecraft with my friends and idk what to do so please help her iphone is GONE so i need help SOOOO badly
I have a usb flash drive that a friend left with me while he was away that has very sensitive files on it that he wanted me to encrypt. He has only a chromebook, so does anyone know of an encryption/decryption prog or web-based site that I can use to secure his drive and that he can use to decrypt said drive on his chromebook?
Hi, I got a Acer Chromebook Spin 514, Ryzen 5, 8GB memory and 128GB internal storage. From what i can gather this should be a supported chromebook for steam? But when trying to install it sais that my chromebook is not supported? Should i just admit defeat or is there something wrong? Looking at just specs and comparing to googles own information it should work. Looking at android authority site my chromebook is listed as supported.
Arggh - I've tried for hours to get this going.
I have a Google Workspace account, I am the admin and only user... bought a chromebook plus today (100% supports Android apps) and I simply cannot get Android apps - there is not even greyed out option, just straight up not an option in the OS to turn on.
If I go to the google play site; my phone appears as an option to download but not the chromebook.
I've gone through all the obvious admin options in admin.google.com and nothing..
Any advice?
Edit: I had Google Workspace Business starter... which allows changes per user not device. Nothing I am doing is working.
As a simple test I upgraded to Chrome Enterprise upgrade (just the trial) - powerwashed the system, did the setup enrolling the device, Google Play works immediately...
I do not want to pay monthly just to use Android apps with a custom domain email address - I am sure there is a way to do this with Google Workspace Business starter - it would be a giant misstep if this was not the case...
