Discussions related specifically to ChromeOS Flex, an official method for installing a form of ChromeOS on (nearly) any device!
Chrome OS Flex is an official distribution of Google's Chrome OS - the operating system found on Chromebooks - with a similar feature-set. However, there are a number of differences, which means that Flex warrants its very own subreddit!

Hello, I installed ChromeOS Flex on my old laptop, and one of the main reasons why i did this was the android sync, but looks like it's no longer there. Does someone know any good alternatives, or maybe some way to get it back?
I NEED INSTALL IT
Like actually. As a Linux user (Fedora specifically) I don’t understand why you would install an operating system which is locked down and comes with far less flexibility and also worse when it comes to application compatibility.
Sorry if asked before but how do I play video files or even better which app has VLC-like capabilites (not the Winfy-Emulation) in ChromeOS Flex without installing Linux?
i need help
So I installed chrome os flex on my MacBook Air 2011 the installation went fine and everything seems to work. Except when you close it the backlight dies when you close it and needs a restart to be fixed. Any help would be appreciated thanks ;)

Hi, in the hardware list of ChromeOSFlex are HP elitedesk 705 stated. Are these the mini PCs or the regular SFF versions? I want to buy a small PC to use behind my monitor with support till 2030.
I'm trying to change os but the drive I'm using won't work. Write protection isn't on. How fix?
My HP Chromebook's automatic updates have ended, but it says that I am eligible for the 'Extended Update Programme'.
The drawback is that I will lose access to Android and the Play Store, as these will be uninstalled.
What is the real difference, then, between a Chromebook like this and a laptop with Chrome OS Flex on it??
Is it worth keeping the machine 'as is' just to use Android?
The camera works fine when testing it on a website in the Chrome browser, but the app itself just makes the computer freeze up. The camera light turns on, freezes the computer, then the light shuts off while keeping the app running. I tested both the internal computer and a USB webcam and had the same issue. I've already tried the beta channel and reinstalling Chrome OS, but the issue persists.
What would cause the camera to work in the browser, but make the Camera app completely broken?
My PC is an HP 18-5110.
Edit: I got it to work once by full screening it. Odd.
Edit 2: Yep, only seems to work if it's full screen. And if I wait like 2 full minutes. This computer is a piece of crap anyway so I'm not too surprised
powered up my 2011 iMac which has been streaming music to my Fosi amp daily as suddenly has no Bluetooth? it is gone from the shelf options when I click the clock and under settings the button simply doesn't work. tried powerwashing but did not fix the issue. any ideas what happened?
I was about to donate or recycle an Acer C720P as it hasn't gotten Chrome OS updates for about 5 years (I think) and a lot of web sites don't render properly anymore. Then I found out about ChromeOS Flex and came across a guide on installing it (https://www.avforums.com/threads/acer-c720-chromebook-installing-chrome-os-flex-guide.2429411/). I pretty much followed the instructions step for step and it worked out great and now I have it installed with the latest Chrome OS. So far, web sites are rendering properly and haven't seen any issues yet.
So I'm trying to understand what I just did. From what I understand, ChromeOS Flex is way to turn old Mac and Windows computers into a Chromebook. Now, the Acer C720P is a Chromebook already. So it seems like the guide I followed is some kind of hack to get the latest version of Chrome OS on my Acer C720P. Can someone better explain in layman's terms how this hack worked and what the mrchromebox program that was run in the guide did? And when I boot up the Acer now, a new white jack rabbit logo appears on the display before it shows the login screen.
Also, I noticed now in Settings > System preferences > Storage Management, that it says "In use" is 13.8 GB, Available is 18.2 GB and System is 13.6 GB. I know my C720P came with a 32GB SSD and the non-touch screen version C720 only had a 16 GB SSD. So does this mean that it's not practical to install ChromeOS Flex on a C720 since most of its 16 GB SSD would be occupied by system files, leaving only about 2 GB of free space? I guess ChromeOS Flex uses more space than the regular Chrome OS?
Lastly, I had to remove a "write protect" screw underneath the back cover of the Acer C720P. Was this necessary to install mrchromebox or ChromeOS Flex (or both)? I've searched around, but I'm still not clear what the purpose of the write protect screw is for. Now that I'm done, can I insert it back? I'm probably going to lose it if I don't put it back.
How will this affect ChromeOS & Flex?
Since the last updates Quick Share is not available.
The option for connected devices and nearby share no longer appears.
OS Version: 130.0.6723.126 (Build oficial) (64 bits)
Does anyone know how to fix this?
If i read the support list, I guess the MacBook (Retina, 12-inch, Early 2016) wont be supported?
Thanks for clarification.

I have a 2011 27" iMac on which I loaded Chrome OS Flex. When I boot normally, the computer does not load OS Flex. I get an Apple logo then a support message. However when I boot pressing the option key, I get the option of booting from "Macintosh HD" or "EFI Boot." When I choose EFI Boot, Chrome OS Flex opens as it should, except it cannot access wifi which I am treating as a separate issue. When I choose Macintosh HD, I get the apple logo and a support message.
It seems like the install of OS Flex was somehow not complete.
My question is; how can I have the machine always boot into Chrome OS Flex rather than offering the other boot option?
I have a Chromebook, but I'd like to boot it into chromeOS Flex because I read that booting from any other OS' live usb will factory reset the computer. Is this true? Would I also be able to make a persistent storage on that live usb so I don't have to reinstall and configure what I want on those live sessions, namely play store apps or steam with apt or snap? I know it says no to the play store on the official site, but do one of you have a workaround? Is the linux developing mode even capable enough to install apps with apt multiverse repositories or snap packages? Please guide me if any of that is possible.
Thanks
Hello, I searched around and can't find anything. I'm wondering if this is even possible. I know when installing Linux there are some extra steps as these machines have the T2 security chip.
Mac computers with the Apple T2 Security Chip - Apple Support
I installed ChromeOS Flex on external SSD by removing the internal ssd and forcing install on the external one. Now that it boots perfectly, when I try to boot this SSD on another computer, it loses all the data and asks me to sign in again.
The whole purpose of the install was to maintain an offline, portable copy of chromeos on an external media, bootable on any computer.
I recently tried to install Chrome OS on a Lenovo Ideapad 100S-11|BY. Upon setup the screen was dark, and barely readable; so plugged in an external monitor and completed the install that way. I connected to the internet, updated the operating system and restarted the device only to be met with the exact same problem as before - the built in display is just too dark to use.
The Lenovo logo on boot is still perfectly readable and fine, and when it was running windows before it had no issues with the screen brightness.
Has anyone figured out a solution to this?
I basically installed chrome os flex thinking having an android phone would make it awesome because ecosystem and all that suff and QuickShare is missing? I don't really care about PhoneHub but is ridiculous that you can use QuickShare on Windows but not on Flex. Any app or something to facilitate file transfer between phone and Flex?
I don't think it matters but just in case i have a Nothing Phone (2a) running android 15.0 beta
Some context: I have a super old laptop and it's all I had for years, so when I discovered Chrome OS Flex I began using it and it was flawless, I used for many months with no issues and it ran smoothly. For comparison, when using Windows 7 this same laptop would get burning hot (I mean it) and get the fans to max speed just from moving the cursor around.
I finally got a PC and kind of abandoned it. To install Windows on said PC I used the same USB stick that had OS Flex on. Couple months later, in the present, I decided it would be nice to do some basic browsing from my bed instead of sitting at my desk, so I went to install OS Flex again, but this time, it doesn't work, at all.
I tried 3 different USB sticks and an micro SD card, using the Chrome extension tool and also downloading the file and using Rufus, nothing works. It either just gets stuck on a black screen with no text at all (the screen turns off) indefinitely, or it tries to boot from the USB, gives up and boot windows.
Did Google change something on the file/OS Flex? Is there anywhere I can find an old version? I really don't think the laptop itself it at fault, I can't imagine would just randomly decide not to work when it always did, always super smoothly and everything else about booting into windows and using it still works (even if super slow and hot).
Hello everyone I am trying Chrome OS Flex on my acer aspire pc. It has amd c 60 and normaly it should boost up to 1.33ghz. But I thing because of some driver issue it only stays at 1ghz. Someone solved this problem at linux by making a .sh file. My question is can I use that file on chrome os flex or in the container?
I linked that project : https://github.com/melma/c60-tweak
Well I'm currently running windows 7 on a old hardware, my only problem is that the CPU fan runs at full speed without me using alternative apps my bios does does not acquire the ability to control your fan speed so I have to use an external app would that be available on Chrome OS or not
I'm running Flex on an HP Pavilion that I bought 3-4 years ago that has an i7 processor and 16GB of ram (for $500 on Black Friday deal). I do development so I'm running Intellij and a server and Postgres on the same machine. Lately, my machine has been crashing and I'm wondering if I could buy a Chromebook with similar specs if I would get more stability. My son is a student and Apple is offering great deals to him as a student for Mac Minis and I think it would serve my purpose, but I love being able to run an Android messenger app on my working environment. Is there a Chromebook or a laptop for Flex that I should be looking for this coming Black Friday? Or is there a better solution for my problem?
