A subreddit for all of those in, interested in or have served in the British Armed Forces of any branch.

This subreddit is for questions about the British Armed Forces, experiences (plenty of sandbags to sit on for war stories), and anything else. Post pictures, links, news, and anything else you fancy.

Welcome to r/BritishMilitary, the home of the British Armed Forces on Reddit!

This community is fairly relaxed, and aims to provide a single forum for the whole British Military community, as well as a place for members of the public to interact with them.

We are not officially affiliated with the British Armed Forces, and we will not ban anyone for their opinions on it. The only restrictions are those laid out in our rules, which are there to prevent the community getting into trouble and keep this subreddit a friendly place. Please give them a read when you can.

Our wiki is currently under construction, which will contain answers to common questions, information about our community and the military sphere, and anything else the community feels it needs. If you have any suggestions for content, feel free to suggest it to the mods. We have recently added a 'Job Fair' which gives first hand insights into a range of careers in HM Armed Forces, from current and former service personnel.

Contributing

You can participate in the community by sharing any relevant news stories you find and discussing those that are posted by others, or answering the questions that crop up about life in the services and recruitment. However, please bear in mind that we are no substitute for a careers office, and more often than not will direct you to your local AFCO when faced with all but the simplest of questions.

On a similar note, this community has little time for people who ask questions about eligibility without checking to see if it has been asked before, or even just Googling it.

Flairs

Posts should be flaired according to the type of content you are posting - if your post is about recruitment, even if it is a question, make sure to flair it as Recruitment to distinguish it from other, more general questions.

You are able to set your own user flair, but don't go mad - stick to service, branch and regiment, and whether you are currently serving. A small selection of badges are also available.

Intelligence linguist ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎

Hello all, I recently did my medical and have found out I cannot do my chosen role of RAF mechanical technician because I have a red-green colour vision deficiency. I am now thinking of join the RAF as an intelligence linguist and would like to how this would change the application process. Also I am only 16 and so I am not sure if I am old enough for this role. Also I have heard that being a linguist in the navy ( which I believe you can join at as an linguist at 16) or army, both have better pay and travel prospects. Now thinking of maybe switching which force I join. Generally I would just like to know more because my plan is changing quite a bit now and how this would affect my application process. Many thanks in advance.

Need medical appeal advice/help

Hey everyone, I applied for the army and my application soon got rejected after they received my medical records. The grounds I was rejected on was because of anxiety and low mood. I have a gp appointment next week to start my appeal. I am 100% over my mental health problems I’ve had in the past and confident my GP will agree with me that I am a lot better. Was absolutely gutted about the rejection and wanted to ask if anyone else has been through this and their appeal was successful? Or if anyone has any advice it would really appreciated :)

Army commando phase 2????

Hello,

I have decided to tell my recruiter I would like to attempt the 29 commando Royal artillery in the hopes to be part of a FST. He has told me that in Phase 2 of training I will get separated from the regular groups to increase my fitness and they will make sure I am fit enough.

Just curious if anyone has under gone this type of Phase 2? And do you have any tips or advice/knowledge.

RLC Driver or Royal Anglians

So I have my assessment centre in about a month, and originally I was going to go for RLC Driver as initially I thought it sounded fun. But from doing my research I find a lot of people say it's fairly easy compared to a lot of other roles in the army, so I've also been considering Infantry, as I know if I do infantry first, I could always transfer to the RLC. I just need some solid advice as I have no clue which to go for.

How strict are eyesight requirements

Been looking at the eye sight requirements recently and I’ve read you need to have 6/6 vision in your right eye and 6/9 in the left. My left eye is perfectly fine however my right eye is significantly worse than my left. I do have glasses but never wear them as with both eyes open my eyesights fine however separately it’s not good. How strict are they on the 6/6 vision in the right eye? I believe 6/6 is the same as 20/20 vision and I know my right eye isn’t that good

Cognitive Assessment for the Signals

Afternoon folks!

Hopefully a nice and easy one for you guys. My recruiter has recommended that I switch my job choice from infantry to a role in the Royal Signals after getting an extremely high score (her words, not mine!) on the online cognitive test.

I was just wondering what the cognitive test is like in the assessment centres? Is it the same test or is it more intensive?

Cheers all! 👍

Edit: The reason I’m asking is purely just to check if I need to revise for anything. If it’s the same test then that’s absolutely sound as I got past the minimum required mark for sigs.

what to say when handing a parade over (for cadets)

hey :D

so I've got cadets in maybe an hour and a bit and was wondering if anyone knows what I need to say when handing the parade over to my sergeant.

This is after everyone is at attention.

I sadly can't remember when I did this last year and wanted to not look like an idiot.

if nobody knows I can ask if needed beforehand, I just remember it being some weird wording of like "the cadets are ready" bla bla or something

sorry if this is a simple thing just feel bad when I get it wrong.

thx

  • K

Update: uhhhh It was packing stuff for the younger ones heading off for the weekend so I didn’t need to worry about it but honestly knowing this stuff is really handy especially as I hope to become CSM :) so yeah thx for the help

Beep test pre entry standard is NOT 5.8 (beep test) across the board

Clearing something up for new candidates. Some tool posted here the other day saying the MSFT minimum score is 5.8 for every job role (including infantry & Paras) THIS IS NOT TRUE. If you’re unsure about your roles minimum fitness standards ASK YOUR RECRUITER.

Realistic fitness standards for ITC Catterick phase one.

Im aware there’s a minimum entry standard for infantry (8.6 on the beep test) I’m curious to hear your opinions on what standard a candidate’s fitness should be when attending basic training.

Thanks all!

Going to Para Basic training soon am I ready??

So I’ve been to the assessment centre and beat the 11.3 MSFT score and I’ve got my next one coming up soon and I know I can get 11.6. But I don’t think that proves at all you’re fit enough I might be wrong but it just doesn’t seem like a big enough test especially compared to what used to be PRAC.

My running times are 5k - 19.56 treadmill. 4 miles - 25.56 2.5 kilometres - 9.23 treadmill 11 kilometres - 47.46 2.17 miles - 14.53 plus weighted vest.

Are MyProtein powders CDT safe?

Looking at changing over from combat fuel as MyProtein’s mega cheap in comparison. Been looking at their impact whey protein powder, impact creatine and their ‘origin’ preworkout. Anyone tried any of these and know if they’re safe? Been googling it and don’t think the impact stuff has an informed sport check.

Cheers for any help!

Bonus pay for not getting first choice

I have recently been told that i am not getting my first infantry reg choice. I have been offered another in a similar location.

They have added that i would get a bonus pay and 2 free flights a month. Was looking for more clarity on how that would work, will i be given tickets or just the money since i am quite close to my hometown.

Also wondering how much the bonus pay, have been told it could be around 14 a day.

Runners knee and joining that army

Edit title: joining the army

Not sure what l've done but my patella (kneecap) is so achy - I'm limping on it and have wrapped it in bandage.

The sensible thing would be to go to a Dr/physio but l've heard it usually goes away if you do strength training exercises/rest it?

Has anyone else had this issue? I am Worried that if I go on the record with it l'll be medically discharged. I have passed my medical but deferred in the meantime.

Normally don't have an issue whilst running and do at least a 5k/10k in every week, so maybe exerted a lot of pressure on it🙁 thanks

Does the Army pay for any University Degree?

If you join the military I know there is funding for degrees, but do they pay for any course of your choosing or is it limited? And would it have to be part-time or full-time in line with your duties?

Can joining the army really change your life?

I’m a 21 year old guy and feel like my life is going no where. Studying primary education degree without teaching qualifications, more like a degree in theory of education. Completely depressed, not felt sense of achievement in years. Other routes of life I’ve been looking at consist of moving away and speaking to no one again, or blowing my brains out. I want to do good, and make sure that I don’t have the space or time to think too introspectively. Have no energy to even speak to people much now.

Has the army helped you fix your life? Will it give me fulfilment?

Would being gay and joining the army be a bad idea? I don’t match every stereotype, but I hit enough for people to catch on.

Army reserve basic fitness assessment lowered?

I was looking at the army jobs website and for both the paras reserve and sas reserve, the basic fitness assessment shows a MSFT of level 5.8? It used to be a lot higher so im wondering if its correct?

Struggling to get myself together

Sorry for the constant posts and bone questions. But I’m honestly struggling to decide what I want to do with myself. I was in phase 1 but daord due to family bereavement my dad was ill. I left and after a month or so my dad passed. I knew that I wanted to re join the army again. So I waited the full year I was told to wait. I’ve re applied and gone through the full process. I’ve currently got to decide as to what I want to go into. I would like to go back into the infantry as they’re based close to where I live. I’m just nervous to leave home again and I’m not sure what to do. I know it’s really stupid and I need to grow up but I’m honestly scared of leaving my family behind. Just wondering if anyone is/was in my position. I don’t have anyone to talk/ask all these questions and to get advice. I tried talking to my recruiter but they weren’t really helpful. I’ve talked to my family and they’re all happy with me re joining but it’s just me. I was excited to get back in when I was waiting to restart my application but now since I’ve got to this point I feel like absolute dog shit. I feel like I’m betraying my family even though they are happy with me re joining. Just looking for a bit of advice. I was looking at maybe going into the reserves and getting a job but once again I just don’t know what to do. I know this is really stupid but I just wanted to ask.

Sorry and thank you

How much of a chance is there becoming a pilot?

I want to join the RAF after sixth form to become a pilot, mostly a fast jet pilot but any would do. I was just thinking how much of a chance is there that I actually get a role as a jet pilot preferably.

Is this just because they haven't practiced much?

Sorry for the obviously inflammatory source, but this seems a bit bad. But I'm not in the know, maybe most don't get out on parade much.

Who do I need a reference off when applying?

When applying for the Army who do they need references from.

Not on the best terms with most teachers at my school so getting one from school wouldnt be a great idea.

I know im going to sound like a major lizard right now, but i go to cadets and the Sergeant Major is fond of me so do you think the army would let me get a reference from them instead of a teacher?

Why do Brits who study German typically don't learn the language because of interest in World War 2 but for other reasons unlike most learners from other English-speaking countries esp Americans?

This which I published explains the gist of what the topic is about.

https://www.reddit.com/r/German/comments/1brxbb3/has_anyone_here_noticed_a_large_amount_of_anglos/

So I ask why is the UK an outlier regarding this unlike other Anglo nations? It perplexes me because after all UK is so associated with WW2 as the country that stood alone against the third reich. Yet it seems not only are most exchange students I met who are taking Germans not doing it because of history but for other reasons like business and tourism, but I even notice a tendency for a lot of British exchange students to avoid talking about the war with subtle non-vocal gesture like its an uncomfortable topic.

Can any one here explain why unlike other English-speaking countries? Esp America where I'm gonna be taking my university education in as someone who's not exactly a citizen of?
