Controller upgrades

I have been using my first controller, the ddj sb3 for a while now and I am starting to improve my skills and grow out of this controller, I was wondering for recommendations for my next controller to upgrade to?

How do i actually kickstart my career now?

I’m at a point where i have practiced with a basic pioneer controller and racked up a pretty ok amount of good tracks to play (i’m guessing). So what now? I should now start to get the feel of playing in a club right? Opener sets first? I’m mainly intrested in playing techno and don’t really care about playing in someones wedding or at pop bar. What should i do first?

Styli for og 1210 mk2

Recently bought a pair of 1210 mk2s. They need a service, but in the meantime i thought i'd replace the styli - they'll get minimal use at home as DJs bring their own carts. Anything i need to know? Recommended budget brands?

nb - i'm not up for spending $400 buying new concorde headshells.

(also Australian or easily avail in Australia please)

Question about dual TWS speakers

I’m looking to buy dual rockville bpa 225. I’m wondering if anyone that’s used these… is it possible to get sound from my laptop into both speakers that are connected wirelessly? it’s easy to bluetooth to them, but the delay from my laptop rekordbox is way too much.

tempo slider problems

as a beginner dj, i use beatmatch sometimes. just wanted to put that out there in case in matters. anyway, when i want to change the tempo of a song, even when i have beatmatch turned off, i have to ‘violently’ wiggle it back and forth for any change to be done. is there any way to fix this? i have the flx4 if that matters as well

New laptop spec check

My Dell that I bought used isn't really cutting it, sometimes the sound will cut out for a sec in the middle of a gig which is super annoying and unprofessional. I'm running Serato Pro.

I'm planning on buying this laptop instead: amazon link here

This one might be a bit overkill I'm thinking since I don't have a ton of $$ right now so this is a huge purchase for me, but I just don't want to upgrade in the next few years.

My question is this: is there any glaring red flags in the specs for the new laptop? What specific laptop would you recommend if not this one for about the same price?

DJ contest ( first "gig")

I have to start by saying I usually avoid contests, I dislike that kind of pressure.

...however, an acquaintance of mine is in an organisation that helps organize events around my hometown, usually concerts and festivals etc.

They got involved in hosting a DJ contest where you can send them a set, and they'd pick a few of the best mixes and ask them to play live on a stream/radio. He hit me up saying I should send one, and I oblidged, not expecting anything out of it since I've only really started DJing a bit over a year ago and aren't really that skilled yet. It's just a hobby, after all.

But I somehow got picked. I know I tend to freeze up or get too nervous to perform in such situations, so I'm really wondering how to approach this?

I sent them a techno set I basically just winged at home, where I was trying out layering and managed not to screw it up. But now I'm thinking I should kind of plan out the live set out a bit, even though I rarely plan my mixes and like to just see what sounds good in the moment.

Thoughts?

Rekordbox tip I figured out myself to archive tracks out of your library on MacOS

TLDR: modify the genre field to "deleteme" then search for it in finder

Hey guys and gals, wanted to share a tip I kind of discovered myself I am sure someone else has figured this out already too. For data hoarding purposes, I have been cleaning up my rekordbox and removing some songs. I wanted to remove them from my main rekordbox folder (I use picard to manage them) and move them to like another archive folder so that way I can continue to import all music in the main rekordbox folder and wont just bring back tracks if I just remove them from collection and not delete them. I kind of got this idea from this video but his music is all sitting in one folder and mine is all in subfolders by artist first letter then artist then album and so yeah just wanted to think of a solution.

Dont know if this will help anyone else who has this problem / desire to not delete tracks but yeah basically if you put the songs you want to remove in a playlist, you can then select them all and click the "i" in a circle button.

Then, change the genre (I write in genre for all of my songs to something I know) to "deleteme20240511". You obviously lose what data you have there so choose a field you don't mind overwriting. (Spoiler do a test to see if that field is searchable in finder).

Anyway, as I just spoiled, now you go to finder and you can search in your main rekordbox folder for whatever you put into genre or whatever other field. Now, I just moved all of these results into a new folder and then I reran them through picard (since they are already tagged with muscbrainz id its very easy) and yeah got my old folder structure back. Lastly or whenever you want just make sure to go back to that delete me playlist and you can remove them from collection and voila.

Obviously, you could also use this method to delete all of them if you want to delete them instead of moving them to another folder. I just have songs I like to listen to but haven't found myself spinning them on the dance floor and wanted to remove them from rekordbox but still have them available for me to stream via plex.

I use bob swifts file renaming script if you are interested.

Anyway I hope that helps.

Standalone Sampler/Slicer/Looper to go with Prime Go?

I don't need anything professional, I only really do house parties at friends places. I want to be able to do this:

  1. Deck A is playing, and I sample 8,16 or 32 beats from master output (quantized with beat detection).

  2. Starting bringing in Deck B while replaying the sampled loop. Apply basic effects to it.

  3. Now Deck A is can be stopped and another song loaded, while the sample plays over the top of Deck B

Prime Go used to have a 32 beat roll effect that could do that, but they got rid of it and its maxed out at 2 beats.

Dj software to set effects in advance

Looking for a software where I can for instance set a low pass freq effect at a certain point of a track and then when it plays the track, it applies it at the right time without me having to manually do anything aside from dragging and dropping my certain effects/transistions.

Thinking that it would help when I don’t have decks and would also help me not forget any good mix that I stumble upon when djing In real time as it would all be saveable.

Anything out there like that?

Is it the DJ’s responsibility to listen to the artist’s setlist for their concert?

I was invited to DJ for a concert for a local artist. He told me that I had “homework” to do and to listen to his music before the concert. He’s really only sent me instrumentals for his setlist so I’m curious to know if DJ’s do need to listen to the artist’s music beforehand rather than just playing the setlist? I don’t know much about DJ responsibilities and the culture for concerts so I would love to hear from you all!

Creating own remix: Where to get STEMS?

Hello!

Totally new to this game, so I got to start asking somewhere. If I want to make a remix of a pop-song, is there a [legal] way to buy STEMS? Or do you have to make them on your own? I know Moises does this, but the quality is...not so good.

We hear a remix of a song on the radio often now days. Does the artist making the remix get the stems from the artist or is there another way?

Thanks for any replies!

Which Record Pool to join?

New to DJing, just picked it up for fraternity parties. I'm looking for a record pool with dj edits of normal versions of the song, not remixes. I've been poking around DJcity and it seems like a lot of their record pool is filled with random remixes, missing orginal versions of party hits. I tried the beatsource trial which has what I was looking for, but I want to be able to download and keep forever. I've seen heavy hits be recommended and would love any input.

Super beginner question: I'm using the FLX4 and I recently got new bluetooth speakers and I love the way they sound. The problem is that the music timing is slightly off from what comes out of the speakers and what comes from my headphones. Does everyone just use a wired connection to combat this?

How do you guys deal with loving many genres?

So here's the thing: I love all of EDM, and when I say all, I mean *all*; from Ambient to Harderstyles, I like everything. I even took a liking to Extratone recently (yeah I don't know what's wrong with me either lol).

My second "problem" is that my tastes change suddenly and all the time. Just recently I had a phase where I was pumping Harderstyles and Hard Techno, whereas now I listen to Liquid DnB and House.

So here's my questions:
a) How do you build your library? From the tips I've heard, you should only buy with intent and what you love, which is a bit hard considering that I could be (temporarily) sick of one subgenre from one day to the next

b) How do you plan, structure, and play your sets, knowing that - again - your tastes could change from one day to the next, and you don't even know if you still like the genre when the gig comes around?

Beginner general method for playlist: alternating a banger, then a simpler track, then a banger, and so on?

Beginner question about easy-ish method / technique.

For this, mostly talking about 120bpm house and pop / Top 40 type tracks.

Is a general safe/basic method going to be start with a great track, followed by a more stripped-down "beat only" type track, and then alternate every other that follows?

So the playlist would be like....

  1. BANGER
  2. simpler track without vocals
  3. BANGER
  4. simpler track without vocals
  5. BANGER
  6. simpler track

CONTEXT:

I am finding it harder to mix two tracks that are both bangers with a lot going on (IE, vocals overlapping, strong and distinct beats).

I am finding it easier to mix one banger with a great beat and vocals and effects, plus one more subdued beat.

Song structure

Hi all, I have just started my DJ Training and have been working on understanding song structures. Per my understanding the song has - Intro, Verse, chorus (pre-chorus in a few cases), verse 2, chorus 2, Bridge (not there in a few) and Outro.

Intro has 8/16 bars typically or 1/2 phrases Verse is 2 phrases long Pre chorus / chorus again will be 2 phrases Outro will be similar to intro

Here 4 beats = 1 Bar, 8 bar = 1 phrase.

Now the above fits in pretty well for commercial / Hip hop numbers but I find it’s varying for tech house.

I was listening to Tibet (Argy, Artbat, Zafrir) and realised its difficult to segment the song structure basis the above logic.

Considering I would want to mix any other song of a similar BPM on its chorus, can you guys help me understand the song structure for Tibet (cues for the segments above) ?

Mixer only playing mono

Please help!

I have a djm-250 (mk1) with two AT LP140XPS connected by phono cables, and sound via m-audio BX5 monitors connected by xlr.

I moved house recently, and ever since moving only the left output has produced sound - it is not the monitors as if I switch which output goes to which monitor, the right monitor is silent instead.

I think the mixer is approaching ten years old, and has only been used for bedroom djing.

Prior to this, the headphone output has occasionally been dodgy, only playing out of one ear.

I think it's 50/50 whether I'm being an idiot or it's a wiring fault that I won't be able to fix, but if anyone can tell me I'm just being an idiot and it's an easy solution I will be very very grateful

Skins for your equipment

I have recently discovered that there are skins you can wrap the controllers, DDJs, etc. What are your thoughts? If you stick them and get bored of them, can you remove them later? Is there a good website with good skin selections to choose from?

Hercules Inpulse 300 - 4 channel mixing?

Hello,

It looks like in Djuced you can mix with 4 channels, just using the Inpulse 300 (and no second controller).

I say this because in 4 deck mode, it highlights decks 1 and 3, and looks like you can "tether" them so they're doing the same thing, and same with decks 2 and 4. Choose which to control with the crossfader.

However, I can't get it to work! When I press play when the crossfader is on the left or right, it only controls 1 deck.

Am I wrong - do I require a second controller or can this be achieved with just the Inpulse 300?

portable dac/amp

recently i bought (shanling UA1 plus) with (Truthear x Crinacle - ZERO:RED)
prior to this i have no knowledge of iems and dacs
my questions are-
1.what is the average life of a portable/dac
2.currently i am running it almost 24/7 to burn my iems is it safe
3.recently the UA1 plus makes some hissing and crackling sound during playback but after re plugging it solved it , using it with ipad air 5 , is it normal or i have problem in my unit.
4.mostly i use the dac and iem on pc while gaming or consuming content i leave it there only , should i cover both after use or will it be okay just to left it there.
5.the type c came with shanling UA1 plus is really flimsy , do i need something specific or any type c to type c will work.
6.some times in longer sessions the shanling UA1 plus becomes hot is it ok to heat. no too much though.
Thanks.
