Least janky begginer controller?

Hello everyone, recently I got into mixing and I finished a course using the, from what I can tell, rather infamous DDJ200. On first glance I thought this was just some random chinesium controller and I was really put off by the build quality. Now that the course is over I am looking to buy a controller for myself and I cant help but think the highly reccomended FLX4 has a similar plastic feel to it, especially since it is powered via usb c which tends not to be as firm as usb b. I dont have a way to try these controllers but can you guys shed some light about the build quality of the FLX4, HERCULES 500 and s2m3, since they are all within my price range. Also is the FLX's smart fade feature a total noob trap?

There's something to be said about having a good monitor speaker setup at home

I had been using my home surround sound system in my RV to save space and it was working ok. This past week I went over to a friend who had a couple of KRK Rokit 5 Gen5s for his home setup and it was a night and day difference for what he was able to hear..

So I took advantage of some Black Friday/Cyber Monday deals at Guitar Center and put together a nice JBL package consisting of 2x 305P MKII and a JBL LSR310S sub and omg.. such a HUGE difference in audio quality and clarity. I can finally hear parts of tracks that were filtered out due to the DSP in the home reciever.

It was $500 alltogether + XLR cables and I have some stands purchased on Reverb (new $90 stands being sold for $25+ shipping new if anyone is interested) coming to complete the setup.

First gig in the bag, next one in 4 days (Fri)!!

Sat night I finally had a chance to do my own 1.5h set at a BarCade in Seattle (TimeWarp for those wondering). It was my first opportunity to play more than a couple of tracks in front of an audience since I started actually putting in the work about 9 months ago.

The DJ I played with brought along his XDJ-XZ and after about 5 minutes of orientation, off I went... My first hour I played retro 70s/80s remixes to kind of fit the scene (old-school pinball /arcade) and turned up the heat for my last half hour. After my friend did his 1.5h, we did an hour of b2b of progressive and melodic to close out our night. I really enjoyed this as it helped me work on not relying on my own hotcues, and finding the right spots to mix in/out. This was my fave part of the night hands-down.

TimeWarp isn't really a club for DJs I'll admit but it was an oportunity I'd never pass up. For me it was prep for my first paid gig coming up on the 6th (Afterlife). It wasn't near the same as DJ'ing in my house and I had a couple of friends hang with me all night and I did see a few head bops during my set so I was happy enough.

The real difficulty I am having is going from my FLX-10 + RekordBox to the XZ which is missing a few buttons or has a different key press sequence that I have a few days to figure out.

All-in-all I had a blast, and it was a dream come true. Friday night is gonna be a banger and I can't wait to really cut loose with the skills I have been working on for the last few months of hard practice. I'm already getting word of another gig in Dec which is unreal. Having friends and mentors in the business is so damn important.

Messed Up my first gig...

Hey, I'm here to share my experience and want to get some opinions..might be a little long story..

Last week, I got a chance to play my set at a club. It was my first gig at a club, my second time on the XDJ, and the third set I ever made.

(Edit) I never had gear. I prepared my set on my laptop, depended on waveforms to mix, and used my mouse to mix on Rekordbox to practise before playing the set at the club. I practised on my laptop but played on XDJ at the club to mix the tracks, I didn't use a USB but used rekordbox on my laptop to load tracks to mix them.

Well, after my first gig at the club, this is what I learned( correct me if I'm wrong )...

  1. event(party) gigs and club gigs are completely different, the set I prepared is dynamic with ups and downs( that's what I think, I can link the mix set link if that's fine here) while the sets played at a club should be at high-energy most of the time( FYI the club was a bass music club with bass house, dubstep, dnb )

  2. Mistakes that I did, since I was dependent on the waveforms for cue points, I had to connect my laptop which messed up the audio quality, I couldn't load the other deck which I needed for my first track and I had to stop the music for a minute which was a big mistake, I should have just played it even if it is not a part of my planned mix. I got feedback from the club owner, who is a DJ as well, he said he was like WTH in the beginning and I was so nervous I forgot to bring the bass up on the other track that I wanted to bass swap with.

One more thing I got as feedback is, the way I just stood there while playing the tracks, and it seemed like I was just playing one track after another with Play and pause, mixing the outros and intros which is not entirely false, I also tried some loop build-ups into next drop and failed with the timing.

In the end, the club owner was fine with giving me one more chance because he said that even though I messed up in the beginning, it got better at the end. he also said that the reason why he gave me a chance was because of my music selection.

I agree with whatever feedback I got. I decided to not waste the only chance that I had, I decided to get gear, learn my playlists, learn beatmatching, practice, and then submit my next mix for my next gig. I'm living in a different country, and it's really hard for me to even get used gear(DDJ-400 or DDJ-Flx4) considering my situation right now but some suggestions would help me. I'm a little confident in my music selection to make sets and I just don't want this to remain as a hobby, I want to use this as a side earning or even a main source to pay for my college...

Thanks for reading...

Edit: I arranged the cue points on my laptop and practiced a lot on my laptop and I didn't just play the set through a soundcloud link or some audio player. I used the XDJ to mix and play the tracks. I hope it's clarified.

I was confused pre mixed with pre planned and thankfully someone spotted it in the comments, I thought live mixing means mixing on the fly, selecting songs from the library and mixing on the spot.

I'm sorry, I feel like the entire story is all over the place without a structured explanation. I'm not someone who just plays a pre-mixed set through soundcloud or YouTube and call myself a DJ. I just pre-planned my set on my laptop by arranging cue points and practised a lot before hand. It was really a bad experience for me, it was like having a hard time when you transition from a cheap controller to XDJ or CDJ, the only part that's different for me is that I transitioned from laptop to XDJ( which i regret). And once again, I used rekordbox on my laptop to load the tracks instead of a USB and I didn't play a whole hour premixed set and put an act in front of the controller at the Club as if I'm playing live.

Weekly Mix Feedback Thread - December 02, 2024

Welcome to the Weekly Mix Feedback thread on r/beatmatch! This is the thread where you post your DJ mixes and ask other people to give you feedback. If you submit your mix, please take the time to listen and comment on some other submissions, especially if they play a style of music you're interested in. Thanks for your help in making these threads work well for everyone!

These threads are intended for beginning DJs who are honestly looking for feedback or critique on their technique, selection, transitions, etc. If you are an established DJ who is just looking for more followers/listens on your new mix or have a podcast/radio show, please post it to a more appropriate place such as /r/mixes or a genre-specific subreddit. Posts that appear to be purely promotional in nature may be removed at the moderators' discretion. This subreddit is aimed at helping new DJs learn and is not the place to promote yourself!

Guidelines:

  • Please include the genre(s) of your mix. This helps attract DJs/listeners of the same genre(s) who are likely to provide more useful feedback. You might also include a title/length.
  • [Mixcloud](http://www.mixcloud.com) is the preferred place to post mixes. It allows you to include your tracklist and transition times, allows unlimited uploads, and is generally more geared towards DJs. If you don’t want to use Mixcloud, be sure to include a tracklist.
  • Please ask for specific feedback or list parts of the mix you liked/didn’t like. Hopefully you are looking for input on specific tracks or transitions.

Example post:

[House / Tech House] djscsi - moving on up (45 minute mix)

http://www.mixcloud.com/djscsi/moving-on-up/

I’ve been spinning for about a year, this is the third mix I’ve recorded and I’m hoping to get some house / tech-house DJs’ opinions on my track selection and mixing. I really like the first few transitions but I feel like I lost some of the energy when I brought in the Maceo Plex track at about 13:30. I messed up a couple parts but I’ve listened to the mix a few times and I think it sounds pretty good. Does anyone think I used too much FX? Thanks for any feedback!

Note: If you have any general feedback about these threads or /r/Beatmatch in general, please message the moderators

Getting all audio files to the same volume level?

I was doing a gig and I noticed that some of the songs from my USB were significantly quieter than others. I have another gig soon and I don’t want to keep having to change the volume nobs all night. Is this a common issue. Is there a program I should put them through? Any help would be much appreciated!

Can I connect XDJ-XZ to my receiver using XLR to RCA cables? Explain to me like I'm 10 please

I have a Sony 2-channel receiver at home that connects to my speakers and it only has the RCA inputs. I was wondering if I could get two XLR to RCA cables to connect from my XDJ to the receiver and have one cable go into the red one and one of them into the white. I don't know if this makes sense I don't even know how to ask this question

Transition/mix without stems

What’s up everyone! I been DJing for a year so far. With stems being so popular I use it often to mix and mash up songs. I definitely want to learn other ways of mixing without using stems. I do turn the low down and bring up the bass of the new song which works.

I would like to see different methods that are more creative.

Is this a scam? It has to be, right

Hey all, I was looking online to get a price match on a pre owned SR2, where I found it on this website for $70? It's listed as B-stock, but that still doesn't explain that price difference. I'm fairly new to all of this, but please let me know if I'm missing anything.

this is what I'm talking about

Help with FX dial? (FLX 4)

Real beginner here with about 10 hours experience at a push, go easy on me 😂

Was just messing around with smart FX on my FLX 4 controller, however now my effects dial has seemed to lose the basic filter effect. It now only has a use when smart FX is turnt on. Trying to get the basic filter back, whilst having smart FX still activating when the button is on.

Also separate question, can I assign different smart FX to the dial whilst the button is on? It seems to only have FX, and to activate the other ones I have to press them on my laptop.

Thanks!

Help with track selection

Hey everyone! Just got my first controller (flx4) about a week ago. Was just curious on how you guys find tracks for your sets mainly finding songs that flow well with each other. Im focusing primarily on dubstep, all the tutorials on YouTube seem to be house music based. And tips would be greatly appreciated :))

Edit: currently have a sub to Beatport

DJSkins vs 12inch Skins ?

I've got an XZ and am wanting to get a skin for protection (edit yes and aesthetics). I'm in Australia so I get mutli shafted price wise then of course we've got shipping. Edit : I do have a decksaver

12Inch is 109 or 129 USD which converts to 167/198 AUD.

Conversely the DJSkins are priced at 250 EUR which comes out as an eye watering $389AUD/253USD and metallic finishes don't seem to be an option (for reference the XZ's just over 4K AUD)

None of this includes shipping..

So what is the major difference between the two that one works out to be so much more expensive ? I Get DJSkins lets me make my own but this is using theirs..

Is the only real difference DJSkins' 'micro ball glue' or does the 12"Skins stuff apply as easily?

I just can't figure out why one is close to twice the price of the other. What I'm wanting to get is the orange swirl or something similar, but I'd settle for plain white or aluminium type finishes as well.

I'd prefer not to go near ebay/etsy/whatevs. Yes I probably should've done this during black friday but that's not quite as much a thing here.

Preparing for my first gig, help needed

so, I'm a bedroom DJ, and sometimes i play for my friends, and in the last few months I did develop some song selection skills and mixing tricks, but that is the case for techno(my main genre) and tech house.

My school(1200 students), normally has at least one DJ for the year, and they normally play a send-off set before Christmas break, not more than 1 hour, but still, a nice showcase, in front of many kids, also 90% of clubbers in my area(ages from 14 to 18).
This year, I'm the only DJ, and the opportunity presented itself.

From a technical standpoint, I feel ready, now I just miss the right songs, like, I have no clue what my peers listen to, in the past years DJs played normal songs you can hear every day on the radio and at birthday parties and then 1 or 2 bangers(last year it was Fein).

I would like to create a more professional experience, without abrupt transitions and try to add a nostalgic touch since this is my last year and all of us seniors are already starting to realize our time here is ending, so I was thinking of adding 1 or 2 EDM bangers from 2012-2017 that remind us of our childhood.

What can you suggest to prepare? I'm actively looking for remixes of popular songs and the trendiest songs of the moment in my country, and some mashups, mainly on SoundCloud, but thus far, I'm having little luck, so suggestions are always open.

The idea is to make something original out of popular songs

Do you think i should try and have as big of a library as possible, accept requests and try to read the crowd(first time playing with a bigger crowd than 30 people)? or should i just plan my set and say fuck it, trying to make it as smooth as possible?

I really want my friends to have a proper last day of school mix and I'll try my best to make it happen, if you can help me, I'd be grateful.

2 months in and I finally figured how to mix this weird song selection

So, I was sent a tracklist by a friend when I started out about 2 months ago. The songs never beat matched and have tried 9 times (play count) to play this mix, only to realise today that not all songs need to be in sync at the line with the 2 red arrows (on rekordbox, not sure how it looks on Serato).

It sounds so much better! I know what beat matching is and practiced when I first started, but I always thought that you need to align all song at the 2 red arrows EVERY time.

We learn every day!

DDJ-400 to Allen&Heath Mixer

Hi! I am DJing at a bar in a week and they have only have an Allen and Heath 10FX mixer, which means they require me to bring my controller. I have the DDJ400 so I was going to take that but the bar is telling me that the only cables that have are XLR audio cables (plugged into their mixer) which don’t plug into the 400.

Can I use RCA to RCA cables to plug in the DDJ400 to their A&H mixer? And if I do that, can I still use my laptop for Rekordbox that would be connected to the controller? Would it still be possible for me to use their speakers and mixer to control their sound system?

Sorry I’ve usually just used the equipment they have set up at bars and clubs but they don’t have anything set up for DJs and so I want to make sure that when I get there, I have all the parts/cables necessary. Thank you!

Mixing DJ-unfriendly Drum and Bass tracks

I'm in the lineup for some relatively underground university party in two weeks, and ever since I arrived in this scene I've always wanted to give them a taste of Pendulum at some point in time (In Silico, Hold Your Color, +some unreleased tracks along the way). Thing is, as good as these albums may be, they are practically unmixable as far as typical dj standards go. They all differ from one another in rhythmic patterns and arrangement relations (it's Pendulum you guys), and on top of that they are heavily vocal-driven so the voices would clash during transitions that would otherwise make sense.

Now, I've done some cutting and stitching in DAW to help myself out, and I could mix-in utilizing their ambient intros and outros, but I figured if this is done constantly it's going to get pretty bland pretty soon (even for my ears, let alone the crowd's, who knows), and every YouTube mix including these is bad.

So far I've managed to do one transition that sounds decent that doesn't include outright outro-intro mixing, and it's not even beatmatch, just timing, a filter and some fade-in/out.

I'll probably find more as I go, just wanted to hear your thoughts on this. How would you approach this?

A&H PX5 or DJM 450

I need someone to convince me here. I m a bedroom dj in for a new mixer, coming from a cheap one (numark scratch). I use a pair of krk rokit 5 and use turntables but looking into digital as well. I m browsing the entire internet for the past days and there are two options that fall into my interest. I m mainly looking for a mixer with fx, so I m already excluding the xone 23 or other rotary like ecler warm2. The 450 is quite the cheaper option(450 eur used) but from what I m reading the sound quality does not compare with A&H. I really like the versatility of the PX5 (850 eur used)but the price is quite high for someone who s doing this just for fun and for himself alone.

What I m mainly wondering is if the sound quality and warmth that I m hearing about would be really worth for my setup, something that I would really notice.

Worth fixing? Even possible these days?

Have an old Roland DJ2000 mixer. Been collecting dust for awhile. Massive amounts of feedback coming through the headphones with no inputs and all volume silenced (not attributable to any specific channel). Is this worth trying to service? Anyone have any experiences similar?

DJ Tag Sample Creation

Hello everyone. I’m new to deejaying and would like to create a DJ tag that I can make a sample of to play during my sets. I think this would help with recognition and getting more gigs from people hearing my DJ name whenever I’m mixing, so that’s my reason for wanting to do it. As I said, I’m new to it, so I don’t have much money to put into making that right now and would appreciate tips on free avenues to do this myself. Thank you in advance for your help in this!
